Just made my account! So happy to see a website like this in 2024!
Just wanted to say I've always thought Clock Work Angles is the best Rush album, what do you guys think?

Welcome to the club! Hope it's a good ride.
Totally dig Clockwork Angels - one of my favorite Rush albums. They really went out on a high note.
The books are excellent, too ;-)

I’ve tried several times to appreciate Clockwork Angels, but have given up. Same with Power Windows. It’s the late 70s/very early 80s period that works for me….

Welcome to PA. This forum and site is pretty old school. Speaking of old school, Hemispheres is the album by Rush that has meant the most to me. That said, I would not object to thinking of Clockwork Angels as Rush's best album since the 80s. Rush did have a long period of clunkers for my tastes, but then I haven't been much of a Rush fan since the 80s.

I initially disliked them when I heard All The Worlds A Stage then I liked them about the time of Exit Stage Left (still have the original vinyl) then got bored with them around Power Windows then came back when they dropped the synths (Roll The Bones). Eventually stuck with them. Despite being the most overrated prog band in history (according to Andy Edwards) I generally regard them as one of the innovators of the genre. BTW I like Snakes and Arrows more than Clockwork Angels but there are no real stinkers.

Rush is one of my favorite bands. I've been listening to them since 1974. "Clockwork Angels" is not my favorite Rush album but it is one of the best final albums by a band ever. And that is saying a lot for a band that has 19 studio releases.
Welcome to the forums.

The best period in the career of Rush is from A Farewell to Kings to Signals. I abandoned Rush after the disappointing Presto and the deception that is Roll the Bones. However, Clockwork Angels was a return to form.

I wouldn't say it's their best album, but it was certainly a very strong album to finish their career. Not every band or artist gets to have such a strong last album.

Yep. It's better than Gentle Giant's Civilian although maybe that's not saying a whole lot. I'd say it's better than VDGG's Do Not Disturb (if that is indeed their last) also although again not saying a whole lot.

Do Not Disturb is an excellent album imo. I only like Godbluff and Pawn Hearts more. VDGG were kind of a samey sounding band most of the time although i like them.

I still like all these albums just not as much as Clockwork Angels. I never even heard ELP's In the Hot Seat but from what I understand it seems like that's probably one of the worst (if not the worst) final albums by a major prog band.

To be honest I am not sure I understand all the hatred for Calling All Stations. If it wasn't put out by Genesis I doubt everyone would be so hard on it. I'm not saying it's one of their best and it might even be their worst but I guess I just don't feel it's as awful as others think it is.

Well I suppose nothing can really be that bad in truth if it's made by actual musicians especially of the calibre of those on these albums. Both albums represent an artistic low for the respective band and are bankrupt of any decent ideas (I could say 'imo' but hardly anyone is likely to challenge). They are not badly played or badly produced though.

I've never heard of the Clock Work Angles album, although I'm a relative latecomer to the music of Rush, having only become a fan since joining ProgArchives. Going off at a tangent, these are the eight Rush albums I've managed to acquire on CD so far, with Hemispheres just added yesterday.

I haven't heard In the Hot Seat, but I didn't find Calling all Stations particularly bad. I didn't find it particularly good either, but it does have a pair of songs I enjoy... overall, I guess it's not even their worst album.

I also prefer the late 70's and early 80's material but interestingly the album received 1226 rating votes and garnered 3.93 stars which is better than the previous 9 lps . So apparently quite a few Rush fans liked it.

Love it, Rush last 3 efforts honestly are my favourites from them, each one with its own distinctivity. My only criticism is that they are loud as f**k, but the songs are fantastic and carry a lot of emotion, the song-writing and arrangements are very well elaborated.
I also love Signals, Power Windows and Counterparts albums as well. The rest, after the classic period, ranges from good to subpar though (Hold your fire).

Agreed completely..... my list of poorest Rush albums would start as follows:
1) Vapor Trails 2) Snakes & Arrows 3) Rush 4) Roll The Bones
and so on.... till we eventually reach Permanent Waves...

Outside Rush's first album, which I give them a pass as it's a band trying to find its footing, Hold Your Fire was the first album where I went "Oh No." Beginning with that album Rush became a hit and miss band with me. I was thinking is this Rush's Invisible Touch moment. Now, they did somewhat better than Genesis going forward, but they were no longer the band that could do no wrong.
Yes had that moment with Big Generator. With that release, they would be a hit and miss band going forward for me. I bought both Hold Your Fire and Big Generator within a month of each other. Both albums were released in September of 1987. To be let down by Yes and Rush within a month was quite disappointing.

I'm still surprised at the contempt Hold Your Fire receives. It's like a longer, hazier version of Power Windows, and almost no one complains about that album. If Rush has an "Invisible Touch moment", it's Presto.
I remember September 1987 very well when those albums were released. A Momentary Lapse of Reason also came out at the same time, and also disappointed a lot of listeners.

HYF is much less interesting than Power windows.
Also Presto is more interesting and fun than Invisible Touch (to put it kindly). For me Presto was a return to form. I enjoy it more than HYF.

There's nothing to complain about. Power Windows opens with a huge one-two punch and Side B is positively sublime. "Middletown Dreams" is enough to make a grown man weep.

I have always grouped Signals, Grace Under Pressure and Power Windows together. A merger of Prog and New Wave that worked quite well with the stylistic direction Rush was taking. Hold Your Fire was nothing more than a New Wave, Pop-Rock album that could have been released by the band Til Tuesday.

Same, here. Some of the decade's finest rock, no debate.

Sorry, that's a bit unfair. "Open Secrets," "Turn the Page" and "Lock and Key" (not to mention "Force Ten") are way too "Rush" for a band like TT to concoct. But I understand the sentiment.
Still, HYF is practically A Farewell to Kings compared to Roll the Bones.

Well, it kind of makes me weep because for a long time growing up I lived in a town (or nearby) called Middletown. So it's sentimental to me for that reason alone.

Hold Your Fire is way too romantic too me lol
It's crazy because Power Windows is among my favourites, and they have some sort of similar "style", but while I love the production of PW, I do really hate how to drums sound in HYF. A lot of the melodies also don't stick in my head either.
Honestly HYF to me is much more closer to Presto than PW, despite HYF still having lots of synths and very 80's drums.

In answer to OP - I don't think this is their best work as it draws upon their best material from the late 70s/early 80s for inspiration, but among the legacy prog bands it is one of the best final albums, very strong and consistent, supreme way to say goodbye.

I always beware that word 'consistent'. Subtext 'no inspiration and the band is done'.
