Some albums here that I was into back in the day for sure. Van Halen gets my vote, it had the biggest impact on me as a 17 year old. I would eventually see them live on the Women And Children First tour at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto in 1980. It was July and so hot, and we're up in the grey seats melting. Boston, Aerosmith and Ac/Dc are right there too.

Who is next for for the second album which would come in the second poll of this series, you mean? Well with, for example, The Who, it would be A Quick One methinks, then The Who Sell Out in the third, then Tommy in the fourth, then Who's Next in the fifth, then Quadrophenia in the sixth....

I somehow knew most of these albums wouldn't appeal to your eclectic tastes, but at least Heart and The Who are in the poll, which may be some small consolation.
Anyway, may vote goes to Boston, although I had More Than a Feeling that Boston were never going to win this first poll (or any other poll).
My guess is Rush will win most of these polls, seeing as they're one of the proggiest bands in Arena Rock, although Kansas fans might have something to say about that.

I knew most of those mainstream Arena Rock albums wouldn't appeal to Greg's offbeat tastes, but I don't consider it a rude comment and at least Greg found a couple of bands worth voting for, so it's all good.

Thanks Paul. It wasn't meant to be funny, unless perhaps a little LOL@me. I really like that Heart album a lot, and I like various albums here. It's true when I first saw the topic name, my first thought was "Eww", but then when I looked I realised it was the wrong reaction. This is something I've mentioned before with me, so maybe that's why i did not go into further detail (and helping the wife for her to trip to San Fran -- place she has to go to once a month for her work). Sorry for not being clearer, just did not occur to me that I needed to be, and no offence intended. It's a reminder of how little we know each other and understand each other online which often comes across in our inferences, reactions and expectations. Sadly, when I do try to be funny, that rarely gets a laugh or positive comments. I have no problem with his series, just a problem with myself for being judgmental too quickly, like with the "Eww" reaction. Then upon seeing the actual choices I realised "mea culpa". Arena Rock is just a term I grew biased against. Same with terms like commercial rock, c*ck rock, gangster rap, but I can find music under all of those labels that appeals to me. Labels, schmabels as I sometimes say. I am a pessimist by nature, but I do prefer to adopt an optimistic attitude, including how I react to others. Obviously I fail, and I could be much kinder and more charitable 9and have caused offence many times, sometimes rightly sometimes wrongly). To each his or her own tastes, live and let live.... As for being rude, I can be downright revolting. I rember once getting complaints because someone said they could not get into Tool, and I responded with "One does not get into Tool, you must let tool get into you" with images to demonstrate.

Yeah, and I absolutely take no offence to you or others feeling that way about Avant Prog. What is very sad to me is that some people seem to take offence again and again at innocuous comments and sometimes jokes I make. Like one times this throw away lame bit of humour about preferring Parisian croissants to Topeka tarts or something when comparing Kansas to maybe Magma. I Have never even been to Kansas or had a tart from Topeka, but I do love Paris. And it's seems like no matter how much you explain, some people just never accept, understand you, and move on. It does make me feel like if I can't be understood here, with so many years here, and so many posts trying to explain, maybe this is not the place for me. One would at least hope that the expressed appreciation outweighs the discontent. And generally, this is a really nice, warm, and accepting community, and we all (or many of us) have our off days.

I own seven of those albums (thought it'd be more). Kansas' debut is a monster prog album, so it's kind of unfair to have them there, as that grabs my vote instantaneously.
The firsts by Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, Blue Óyster Cult, Heart, Foreigner and Van Halen are all classics in my book. I enjoy early Leppard, too!
I've been a Rush band for forty years, but their eponymous record does nothing for me at this stage.

I did not even notice where this was placed as I usually just use the immediately visible on the forum home page quick n' easy Latest Forum Posts section. I moved it. It used to be that all were supposed to be in Prog categories in Prog polls (but I got that changed with admin approval before becoming an admin) and then the Proto-Prog/Prog Related forum had its option to make polls taken away for most users, so those often ended up in Prog Polls or General Music Discussions. The Way I kind of looked at it was, as long as you think the majority are Prog albums or significantly related to Prog/ progressive (kinds of art and experimental music), and plenty of them are in PA (should be at least half in PA), then it's usually okay.

I've fallen out of love with Loverboy too, but who shall I replace them with for the next poll? How about Fleetwood Mac? They're not exactly Arena Rock, but I think we're all agreed that they're much better than Loverboy. In all honesty, I'd rather watch an episode of Lovejoy than listen to another Loverboy album.

Well, seeing as Loverboy hasn't picked up any votes so far (no surprise there), I've taken the liberty of replacing them with Meat Loaf's Bat Out of Hell album in this poll, although it's probably way too late to pick up any votes now.

Coming up tomorrow..... Arena Rock: 6th Album
Paul,
Good poll. Did not respond before. I like several of the albums listed. Asia, Heart and Kansas would be my top 3. Boston is overplayed on the radio, but it's an excellent debut. Van Halen spent a fair bit of time on my record player back in the day.

^ Admittedly, I've never owned a Van Halen album, but if I'm going to choose a favourite VH song, I might as well Jump in at the deep end.

"Jump" seemed so overplayed here back in the day when I was still a child (some would say I still am). For the hits, I preferred "Panama" and "Running With the Devil".
"Sunday Afternoon in the Park" is more my thing, but also less relevant to this topic.

^ "Jump" is the only Van Halen song I can ever remember, mainly because it was overplayed on the radio here too.

I own seven of those albums (thought it'd be more). Kansas' debut is a monster prog album, so it's kind of unfair to have them there, as that grabs my vote instantaneously.
I've been a Rush band for forty years, but their eponymous record does nothing for me at this stage.
Agreed on both. Huge Rush fan but the debut does little for me these days. I will occasionally listen to it.
The Kansas debut is a great American prog effort and shouldn't be in this poll. However, since it is, I voted for it.
[EDIT] - Apparently, I already responded to this thread two months ago.

Actually not a bad album at all, did not get a vote because it's got some serious competition.

I'm really surprised that Rush hasn't even come close to winning any of these five Arena Rock polls (with only three votes in total so far), although I have a feeling they may win the next poll tomorrow.
