I can't believe no one has made an Änglagård appreciation thread, yet! Let's use this thread to talk about Änglagård! Share your favorite live videos, any cool anecdotes about the band (I love Mattias Olsson's videos on recording at his https://www.instagram.com/rothhandle/" rel="nofollow - Roth Händle studio ), new material (!!??), or really anything Änglagård related. I'll kick it off with some of my favorite videos Some EXTREMELY prescient person took a video of them in 1993 during their first American tour. This footage is from the Marx Inn in Milwaukee - They're playing "Ifran Klarhet Till Klarhet" from Hybris: The audience commentary is gold "Where's the carnival?" A lot of bands don't get their own thread on here. No Yes or Genesis thread either. We can't have special threads for everyone. However, I'm a fan of Anglagard so I won't complain. ;) I'm not sure what my favorite album is by them. Maybe Hybris. Epilog was great too. The third one was also very good but a step down from the first two imo. I haven't heard any of their live material though.

Thank uuu Änglagård, with just three albums (masterpieces) and sixteen tracks (one of them not yet officially released), changed the history of prog. I believe they are one of the most sensational bands in the world.
"Längtans Klocka" is one of the band's best songs and the darkest and most evil of all. It's a masterful closing track for one of the best albums I've ever heard. (yes I like Änglagård)

I think Hybris is still my favorite overall, but I still dig the other two studio records. I actually really liked the Japanese live record they posted on Bandcamp a few years ago: https://anglagard.bandcamp.com/album/prog-p-svenska-live-in-japan" rel="nofollow - https://anglagard.bandcamp.com/album/prog-p-svenska-live-in-japan The recording quality is really good and the mixing is as good as their studio recordings. In fact, I read on Änglagård.net that it was mixed and engineered by Alar Suurna who mixed Viljans Öga. It's head and shoulders above Buried Alive (which, on the drums in particular, has way too much room-sound / reverb for my liking).

I used to love Hybris, and the follow up to, but haven't listened to the albums in many years. A conversation I had with someone at this forum put me off so now it has some negative associations. I remember music from the album well anyway and so know it would still appeal if I put it on again. It is one of the first modern Prog bands I got into -- the first being Miriodor, and then U Totem, and then I think Anglagard with Hybris. | I listened to Hybris the other day and still love it. It has its own special atmosphere that modern Scandi prog bands are still trying to imititate (Jordsjo for instance). Par Lindh's 1994's Gothic Impressions also has it. Those are 2 of the most important prog albums of the 90's. I was never such a big fan of Epilog or the more recent Viljans Oga. However the spin off band All Traps On Earth and their album A Drop Of Light is a serious rival to Hybris. |

100% agree regarding All Traps On Earth! Also agree that Viljans Oga was a step down from Hybris and Epilog -- on a related note, about a month ago I found a used vinyl copy of Viljans Oga at one of my local record stores. Had to buy it, we simply don't see much Scandi prog on vinyl here in the states.

I have such fond memories of discovering that Swedish scene, much later though but that was the cool part, hearing Anglagard, Anekdoten, Landberk and Sinkadus as I made my way through their albums. Landberk was a difficult band to find physical copies for but I did manage to do that over the years. Actually a lot of my greatest memories musically were going through the music of Canterbury, Zeuhl or Krautrock for example and just sitting in that style of music for months. Hybris is still my favourite but Epilog and Viljans Oga round out my top three. The latter shows a band in capable hands still despite some band changes. All Traps On Earth were mentioned and Johan Brand certainly has made his presence felt in latter day Anglagard. ------------- "The wind is slowly tearing her apart" "Sad Rain" ANEKDOTEN |

| I love Hybris. I gave one or two listens to Epilogue many years ago and remember not really liking it so much... besides, for me part of the charm of Hybris was it's being sung in swedish. The last one I should give it a another listen too, I remember liking that one better than epilogue when I checked it out. |

An Ånglagärd appreciation thread! This is one of the reasons why I enjoy this forum so much... I consider this band to be a true gem. In my case, I had a first round listening to Hybris, and I remember feeling like there was a bit too much going on. It took some time before I revisited their music, and it was Epilog that first sank in. Through Epilog I connected with Hybris, and I grew to appreciate its raw, intricate sound. Yet some time went by before I listened to Viljans Öga, which I found to be outstanding as well. While sounding a bit different than the previous albums, production is spot on and composition-wise, I don't believe it gets any better than that. I would recommend anyone to give it a chance, in case they haven't yet. Will they ever record another album? I certainly hope so... By the way, I haven't listened to Traps on Earth yet, so I'll definitely give it a try... |

I also really rate that live in Japan double lp; bought it on vinyl when it came out and find it remarkable how faithfully reproduced these tracks are Live with either minimal or no overdubs or studio intervention!!  I (stupidly) sold my original 1993 'colours' label vinyl version of Hybris with all the inserts when i had a thin-down of my vinyl collection.. i kept others (Utopian fields, ultima thule) but really regret losing that original Hybris.. fetches really silly money nowadays.. ------------- |
