To my great shame, most, if not all of prog that I listen to is the product of men. Not that it is intrinsically a bad thing, but I would be interested in adding a bit of equity to my music library.

Do you have any recommendation?

I'll avoid the cliché of having the only female in the band as the singer.

Aranis was a majority of women (sometimes 5 over two men)
Medieval Baebes was all women, I believe
The Moulettes are mainly female.

All-girls bands that were proggy-ish (though I still think they should've been included in Prog-Related)- and they rocked pretty hard too:

Birtha

Fanny:

Here is Rachel Flowers covering ELP, but she does original material as well.
Hiromi is another artist worth checking out and also Sax Ruins.

There are many female artists (composers/musicians/singers) that I adore in Prog and Proggish avenues.

I could do a laundry list (that can get overwhelming for an attentive and diligent OP), but one particular modern favourite of mine in so-called "Prog" that I mention a lot at PA (too much some might say) is Anna von Hausswolff.

My all-time favourite album by a female artist is "Mother" by Gilli Smyth because of its unique blend of psychedelia, space rock, and experimental sound collages. The album, released in 1978, features a mix of whimsical folk-pop elements, dreamy nursery rhymes, trippy rock tunes, and avant-garde jazz influences. Gilli Smyth's signature “space whisper” vocals add an ethereal quality to the tracks, complemented by saxophone-led melodies and unconventional song structures.
The album delves into themes of motherhood, gender roles, and feminist polemics through its eclectic soundscapes. With contributions from Gong members such as Daevid Allen, who was her partner for many years, and other musicians like Didier Malherbe, Christian Tristch, and Pip Pyle, "Mother" offers a journey through surreal sonic landscapes that reflect both the era it was created in and the visionary creativity of its makers.
From chirpy psychedelic folk music to experimental jazz-rock explorations, "Mother" presents a musical tapestry that is both charming in its eccentricity and musically imaginative. While some tracks may lean towards the avant-garde side with their sound collages and unconventional arrangements, the overall essence of the album captures a time when musical boundaries were being pushed and artistic expression knew no limits.

There's probably more female prog musicians than there are female prog fans (which unfortunately probably isn't saying much).

I wonder what percentage of female prog musicians are female prog fans.

{I would expect that there are various female singers who front bands considered Prog bands, as well as contributing female musicians, who would not consider themselves to be fans of Prog.  That said, there are quite a few composer/musicians who create Prog (as we may define and divine it) rather than those who "just" perform in Prog bands. Some of those might not consider their music to be Prog or consider themselves to be Prog either.  Anyway, just an aside from the topic.}

Japanese symphonic prog band Ars Nova started as an all-female trio (keys/bass/drums). Later the band expanded to a quintet with the addition of two male musicians. It's been a long time since they recorded any new material. Wish they'd get together for another album. Keiko Kumagai is a great keyboardist.

Beat me to it! Ars Nova remains my favorite keyboard/symph/ELP/RPI-inspired group.

While they haven't released a new album (yet), Keiko has prepared a fair amount of new music, and the all-girl line-up was restored with their most recent live performances.

Here's footage of Keiko, Mika, Panky (from the later 4tet lineup) and Akiko back in action, in France, circa 2018 at Crescendo Fest.

Iseesha Bailey from Karda Estra

Amanda Parsons ( my favorite vocalist of all time)

Curved Air...( box set)

Tirill Mohn...excellent musician and writer

Steeleye Span...reminded me of Jethro Tull at times...particularly Tull's more Folky period.

Annie Haslam...I like Renaissance and I have everything on cd. The first 2 with Jane Relf and from Prologue to Azure

Arsnova I really like and I have their entire catalog on CD minus a live album ( I think?)
They are often compared to ELP..but when I listen to their early albums it comes across as instrumental Prog and so much ELP . The last few releases had new members and their style altered a bit with more guitar. Biogenesis Project is one of my favorites.

Avoiding female vocalists, of whom there are many, great harpist Zeena Parkins is on a good number of albums listed on PA by different bands/artists, like News From Babel and Björk.

Belarus's wonderful chamber prog Five-Storey Ensemble is about 50% female.

More RPI I think rather than ELP but they did do the Keyboards Triangle album with Gerard and a very nice version of Tarkus.

I love their albums especially Preternatural.

Looked online ansd lo and behold there is an event taking place in my home county of Cornwall on the 7 June. That said, it will still be a 1 and half hour drive , 3 hr round trip which is a bit too much. An hour each way would have been fine so unless I stay over it's not happening for me.

I know many more, and a lot more that might be considered "adjacent". They might not be commercially successful, but the music is great and I (at least in the last handful of years) seek women because I prefer their voice.

Curved Air
Illusion
Carol of Harvest
Mellow Candle
Yoshiko Sai
Earth & Fire
Savage Rose
Empire (with Peter Banks)
Catapilla
Renaissance
Comus
Bran
Cos
Lily & Maria
Fantasy (Florida band)
Amon Duull
Trees
Sandrose
Mother Superior (all-woman group)
Babe Ruth
Steeleye Span
Pentangle
Spyrogyra
Hatfield and the North
National Health

Sandy and Jane Relf did a lot throughout their career. I'd listen to ALL their stuff.

Before Ars Nova, Shingo "Numero" Ueno released an EP on Made In Japan by an all-girl sympho quintet called Rosalia (Zillion Tears, 1990).

The keyboardist was Naomi Miura, who temporarily joined Ars Nova for a few concerts in the late 1990s and early 2000s after the departure of original bassist Kyoko Kanazawa (Saito).

It's closer to Deja Vu than Ars Nova, but it's perfectly listenable.

Regarding contemporary progressive music and female artists that have solo careers, I like Rosalie Cunningham the most. Her music is a sort of vaudevillian-carnival-psychedelic-prog that incorporates influences from the original British progressive rock movement of the late 1960s and early 1970s but also showcases her unique musical innovation and personality, resulting in a sound that pays homage to various styles while creating something entirely new and distinctive. Cunningham’s music is full of dreamy atmospheres, lush instrumentation, and introspective lyrics that delve into themes of introspection, mysticism, and personal growth. She has released two excellent studio albums so far, of which my favourite is her debut in 2019 due to her fantastic blend of progressive rock, psychedelia, and folk-rock influences. The album showcases Rosalie Cunningham’s versatile vocal range, intricate songwriting, and musical arrangements that draw inspiration from various genres. The songs on the album feature a mix of haunting melodies, ethereal vocals, and dynamic instrumentals that create a unique and captivating listening experience.

Hi,

So nice to hear this ... I call it the future of OUR classical music ... younger folks will likely be hearing this in various combinations and styles in 20/30 or 40 years ... absolutely lovely. It makes me appreciate the work by ELP even more, and how it was re-imagined by Rachel Flowers and now in somebody else's hands ... totally far out.

Surprised no one's mentioned Henry Cow yet! They were 50% female during their later years and had a female singer!

I also recommend Uboa, Tricot, Ryoko Ono, Tenko Ueno, Domi, News From Babel, Oksana Linde, Risa Takeda and Paranoid Void, and if you're really desperate there's always that weirdo whose Bandcamp link is in my signature Tongue

Mmmhhh!!!!... I'm not sure how long Georgie, Dagmar & Lindsey were all three together in the band, but that was when the Vevey Concert was filmed

Only Lindsey remained for Western Culture in 79, though there was Annemarie

Recent band Ebb are an excellent group of 5 women and 1 man. I saw them live at Nene Valley Rock Fest, and it seemed few people had heard of them; Even the organizer said they weren't performing at first, but someone else dropped out and they 'were the only band to actually complete the sign-up form.'
By the end of their performance, you could feel the impression that they had left on everyone.

They're yet to release anything studio based as far as I know, but they've got some live recordings on their youtube page that I'd recommend to anyone.

Thank you!  As I read this thread, her name came to mind!

As a prog instrumentalist, I often seek out women instrumentalists in prog.  Many seem to be overlooked.
As an example, Bassist Sarah Lee was remarkable in Robert Fripp's punk/prog fusion project "League of Gentlemen."  Gail Ann Dorsey played bass with David Bowie, etc.

I wish there were more examples of female lead guitarists, some of the ones I've seen (Orianthi for example) are brilliant!

Why not more?  One of life's great mysteries!  If Yes had recruited a woman to replace ailing Jon Anderson, history might have changed.

I once played bass in a band led by one of Bob Fripp's Guitar Craft students, Alonzo "Lon" Jones, and we always had women musicians around us!  It brought a nice balance and energy to the live performance.

Hi,

I think in due time, this will improve and even out ... when we see so many men doing exactly the same thing, my hope is that the women end up showing us something that the men don't do, or can not do yet.

100 years go, there weren't many women that played an instrument, and since then, things have changed tremendously ... but I have an issue, for example, the UCSB Department of Music, in my years there, had no women in their ranks, even as an instructor, which ought to say something about it, 40 years ago, still likely going on today ... gee ... let's look at major universities and how many women are in the ranks? Not many.

Some men even get accolades ... but no one will ever give Laurie Anderson and many other women, some kind of appreciative rank within an educational this or that ... Eno and Wakeman could go on teaching as long as they feel like ... but you think someone like Annie Haslam, or Sonja Kristina, or DAgmar Krause ... will ever get a chance to do likewise? We will be in ashes and eaten by all bugs before that idea ever happens!

It's a disgrace, but it tells you that there are too many men in the arts ... heck, women were not accepted as writers, painters and composers for many years, and there are many stories about writers having to hide, painters that were robbed and taken advantage of, and women composers? .... in classical music I don't even know of one, do you? Actually I know one ... the wife of the Conductor Peter Mark (Virginia Opera Emeritus) had a couple of operas, and he showed them on stage, but even though I have one of the operas, I can not tell you how I feel ... I can't help thinking that the whole thing was touched up by a man's hand, so it would not feel different than the average!

It's not about "prog" ... it's about the arts in general ... and the local crap art store that shows landscapes all done by housewives with the color by number process ... not a good way to help define a new artist ...

And lastly ... my younger sister lives in Paris. She has an incredible artistic output and has done shows in over 50 locations around Europe ... and what does she have to live for in her 60's? Nothing ... ignored, and not valued anywhere, even by galleries that once showed her work. It's like she has to go back to her living as a teacher of this and that in France, to be able to make a living ... there is, right in your face, the progress of a lot of women in the world of the arts!

It's a disgrace!

Ex-Art Zoyd keyboarder Patricia Dallio has a considerable amount of solo work. Much of this is too progressive to count as prog rock though - it's more avantgarde electronic (where there are quite a few women around).
But how cool is this? And it's from 2024 apparently.

Circe Link has a terrific voice that is crystal clear, is always in the heart of this duet's music, yet never crashes bore.

Courtney Swain blows my mind.  Ingenious vocal lines.  Solid keyboardist.  But most of all, Courtney continues to grow as a composer.  As good as she is now...her best is ahead of her.

Fulano is a Chilean jazz-rock band known for its complex, top-notch compositions featuring female vocals delivered by Arlette Jequier, who sometimes also played clarinet on the records. This is live footage from 1996.

In this 1993 live footage, which featured a top-notch backup band, the well-known Croatian singer Josipa Lisac, listed in the PA database as a prog-related act, sings a jazz-rock song from her 1973 first LP, which, in accordance to era, was full-blown prog; later, she switched to pop-rock.

American guitarist Sarah Longfield plays for the instrumental prog metal group The Fine Constant, and she does that majestically. However, I think her solo songs, in which she appears as a multiinstrumentalist and singer, are even more beautiful. For instance, this song, "Cranial Metropolis," where Longfield plays drums as well, is really amazing.

Or "Cycles," a tune that may display even more of her skill as a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist.

Mary Fahl from October Project. While some folks may question October Project's prog credentials, there is no question regarding Ms. Fall's vocal abilities. Highly recommended.

The sound of Art Deco's debut album reminded me of British neo-prog from the 1980s, yet with female vocals. They performed in their native Finnish, which suits the music remarkably well. The vocals delivered by Jaana Mäkinen are absolutely breathtaking; she is an extraordinarily powerful female singer.

Emanuela Vedana's vocals haunt Melting Clock's Sophmore album "Altrove".  Altrove is a top-five 2024 album...for me.

Virtuoso classically trained violinist Siobhán Cronin (Trans-Siberian Orchestra, STARSET, Wynwood Trio) deserves inclusion. Here she is flawlessly enacting Jean-Luc Ponty's role in "New Country," alongside young 6-string wiz Angel Vivaldi and prog guitar royal Steve Morse.

Brandi Wynne, a bass player for the Ozric Tentacles, honed her craft through the Music Synthesis Studies program at Berklee College of Music. Her vibrant energy contributes significantly to this legendary trippy band's distinctive spacey sound, making her a standout musician in their lineup.

Yes, it's mostly men in prog. It's also mostly men in electronic, jam band, post-rock, fusion, metal (all forms) and jazz. It's not like prog is the only genre that is mostly men.

Brandi is no longer in the band though.

Brandi is no longer in the band though.
Given that Brandi Wynne seems to still be an official member of Ozric Tentacles, Vinny Shillito—who has previously toured with the band from 1990 to 1991 and from 2007 to 2009—is essentially a stand-in, in my opinion.

Sally Gates is a New Zealand guitarist and composer residing in New York. Her jazz-metal trio, Titan to Tachyons, has garnered significant critical acclaim. Titan to Tachyons' jazz-metal approach blends Sally Gates' amazing improvisational talent with the organic elegance of prog.

Not still. She was not a member for a while after she and Ed Wynn ended their relationship. I guess it's possible she recently became a member again. She's not listed in wikipedia though although she does appear on the credits for the latest OT album which doesn't in itself make her an official member.

Y'all forgetting the stunning Angela Allen in Carmen on synths & mellotron + plus she has a lovely voice... and she dances beautifully! She should have been a star.

I am aware of Ed and Brandi's split. We shall see, however, if it endures indefinitely.

Hi,

She plays in a piece or two in Ed's recent album, but in that one concert a few months ago on the net (maybe earlier), she was not the bass player ... my concern is that she might be too regimented and not "free enough" of all the chords to be able to flow/float a bit better, thus making for a good backing to Ed, but not providing enough bits and pieces to challenge him a bit ... but then, neither did the bass player in that concert ... when all the musicians seemed to play second fiddle to Ed. I think the relationship might be fine (because of Silas?), but I don't think she will become the regular bass player again. Having met them, I have to say she is nice ... and I would like to see her venture out to different material ... and not so stuck on riffing material. Somehow that is so much like the folks out of Berklee than otherwise ... she needs to branch out, and maybe even do some real off the curtains, jazz ... so she can mature on the bass some more.

As far as Ed and OT ... I don't think they are going anywhere or getting any better. It's getting to be much of the same thing now.

The Italian band Frogg, which formed in 2018, does a fantastic job of centring Letizia Merlo's vocals within a complex prog metal framework. That way, their music's emphasis draws even more attention to Merlo's wonderful singing.

I have already mentioned instrumental progressive rock band Silent Grace in the "Ukrainian Prog" thread, but never mind—this splendid band deserves more attention regardless. The band's remarkable sound is really defined by Natalia Siekierzinska's viola playing—a brilliant fusion of innovative improvisation and virtuosic talent that creates astonishing soundscapes and evokes a sense of vastness and otherworldliness.

Hi,

Quite nice, but hardly original. I haven't checked but if this is the first album this would be special and probably make us look forward to what is next. There is, some serious musicianship here, which is nice and probably better than most fusion, or hard rock bands out there that seem to formulaic and repetitive, but I'm not sure that this is as "innovative" as we think, unless we specify that metal doesn't do violins or violas ... which would be a crazy idea and comment ... it works beautifully here.

And I would like to hear more. As long as it is not "the same thing" ... both of these cuts are close to it, but the viola makes it different and better.

It's as original as a prog band can muster these days, and yet being firmly ensconced within the genre's well-trodden confines, for let's face it, everything's been done to death.

Carina Taurer, composer, keyboard player and one of the two founding members of the new French symphonic prog band 'Oddleaf', who released a really impressive debut album called 'Where Ideal and Denial Collide' just three days ago. She and the co-founder of the band, flautist Mathieu Rossi, are also members of the medieval music trio 'Vagarem', who perform their a capella polyphonic songs at medieval and renaissance festivals all over France and Europe.

That footage is from their first concert on 8th October 2022 at "La Coconnerie" in France, when they had a male lead vocalist named Olivier Marcaud. He left the band at the end of 2023, and was replaced by the excellent female singer Adeline Gurtner (formerly of progressive metal band Resilience, crossover prog band  https://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=35021%20" rel="nofollow -

They've performed live with Adeline on vocals several times this summer, but I couldn't find any footage showing them playing live with both women on stage.

Edit: There are some short, rather grainy clips of the band performing live earlier this year with both women on stage in this promotional video for the debut album:

Hopefully they'll upload some of those clips to their YouTube channel as full videos in due course. Smile

Five pages in and, not unexpectedly, no mention of Covet's guitar wonder Yvette Young.

...before she picked up the guitar, Young was already an accomplished pianist and violinist. From her Piano EP, "Jolt" (with Covet's then-drummer Forrest Rice, and former bassist David Adamiak lurking about).

Gender Studies is a Ukrainian progressive rock ensemble featuring a female vocalist (Yuliia Pynylo), a female violinist (Anna Lavreniuk), and a female lyricist (Kateryna Portniahina, who also creates the beautiful illustrations that embellish the band's releases). The eclectic style and brilliant concepts of Gender Studies should be sufficient to entice anyone keen on discovering more about this relatively obscure Ukrainian prog band. You should listen to their 2024 six-track album in its entirety if you have time. You won't be disappointed.

thank you for your attention David and i agree with you ,quality over quantity.

however it is hard to find a list of progrock female singers and for people like me who appreciate their voice as a  wonderfull musical instrument this may help.

i selected not only one album but one track for every band (unless there are different singers) and after  listening to them over a year i am sure they are gems to my taste.
so it is not too much time to check them all

of course some are poppy(i am more a poppy than a folky or metal guy) ,but all but one listed in PA and less catchy tracks wait for you on the LPs

my main concern is about streaming , but you can buy the albums you really like after surfing /streaming and support the artists;

and a  big thank to the legendary brufordfreak for his nice comment

KT Chang is the Elephant Gym's star and front woman. She's a phenomenal bass player! According to Wikipedia, just like her brother, who plays guitar in the same jazz-fusion-tinged math-rock trio from Taiwan, she has classical training from her mother.

Meanwhile, over in Japan, superstar bassist Juna Serita has been turning heads ever since her old band Tokyo Groove Jyoshi's phenomenal cover of Tower of Power's "What is Hip?" went viral five years ago.

Since then, Juna has recorded as a solo artist and with her new heavy fusion quartet Muses.

Earlier this year, Juna dropped this beautiful slice of trio prog...album forthcoming!?

Hi,

K. T. Chang is very good and enjoyable, and she plays like it.

Juna was a nice listen, though I did not think that the music itself was a good show for her ability ... I'm not sure, but I think the music is too all over the place to help showcase her skills.

I much prefer that Hindu Lady that plays like a monster. I can't even remember her name. THAT is a bass player, and we can only hope that she takes Bootsie, and everyone else out for a ride, on much bigger and more expressive music than what we consider "progressive" which is getting repetitive and boring, and not helping the players as much as it should ... think Jaco ... the music was new then ... and it made a difference. It's almost like all of them have to do this and that and this and that ... and the music itself is secondary to the gymnastics of playing! I'm not sure that was what "made" so many players great. The music came with it and it was new .... helping the player accentuate the details even better.
