Hello everyone! I haven't posted for a while. I'm writing this because I want to open a channel to upload albums to YouTube that aren't on Spotify or anywhere else. This is just for the sake of spreading the word and giving everyone a chance to listen to the music they want. Would there be a problem with licences?

You will likely be infringing licencing laws by doing this. Some bands don't want their music to be available on public streaming services unless they are paid for. Pallas recent album for instance.

OK. But why is it that almost every album in the world is uploaded to YouTube by unofficial channels that don't have the licences? And why is there usually no problem with them? Not long ago, a friend of mine uploaded Horizonte's 'Señales sin edad' and the copyright didn't even jump. There are some things I still don't quite understand.

Even with some copyright issues, most bands won't take it down, they'll just claim some or all of the profit from the record, so the bands/artists that made the music would still gain monetarily from it

Something of an exaggeration I expect. Y/t has been the wild west of the internet for a long time but common sense suggests that just uploading music without the licence or band approval may attract attention and not in a positive way. Also I doubt you are the first to think of such a thing.

I'm not talking about The Beatles' or Lou Reed's discographies, of course, but albums by groups from the third row down. It's just that only one in 20 or 30 is not uploaded in its entirety. If the law and the issues are so strict about this, it's strange to me. Yesterday I spent almost hours searching for albums that weren't on YouTube through unofficial channels, and I found very few.

^ you just have to put some kind of disclaimer saying that if the artist wants their music removed then you will remove it immediately and also state that you are not monetizing the channel so that nobody can accuse you of profiting off of someone else's music.

YouTube is the only way some artists' music lives on and many artists themselves do not take the initiative to keep their music alive so it's great people like you are taking the time and effort.

I'm starting a YouTube station myself to post some of the rare albums that nobody else has yet just because they deserve to be heard. I mean how can you buy music that you don't even know exists?

Samurai of Prog too. These guys keep taking their music uploads down off YT etc.

That's stupid if you ask me. They expect all of their listeners to own a working CD player or turntable.

I uploaded some video from my car's dashcam to Youtube -just a minute's worth of some idiot on the road. YT took it down because a song was playing on the radio in the background. I had to remove the audio before it was allowed back up. I was quite surprised tbh.

Because I want to retain the confidence of the artists I write about and support, I make it a golden rule never to upload a YT video if it isn't from their official channel without their knowledge or consent. It is bad manners, but also this culture of something for nothing is destroying productive culture.

I had a similar thing happen. A few years ago, I took a video of family on Christmas and there was some music playing in the background. The youtube detectors quickly identified the songs as copyrighted and demonitized the video. They never took it down though. It was an unlisted video and the only people who could watch it were those people that I shared with link with. Didn't matter to YT

I often watch people that take video of antique malls and they often complain about this. Some of them add their own music to drown out the music playing at the antique mall. For my own videos (mine focus on baseball cards at antique malls), I remove the audio and replace it with a voice-over I record at home.

I live in constant fear of YouTube's copyright rules. Therefore, I never play music on my channel.

I also think that a disclaimer, not being monetized, and being cooperative might placate any possible action.
Maybe you can see how others do it. What I love about this channel are the livestream chats

No. It all depends on the attitude and action (or lack thereoff) of the copyright holders (or worse: rights management businesses/catalogue holders, because they smell money in everything). When you are posting/publishing - on youtube or elsewhere - copyrighted material without the authorization of the copyright holders you are infringing their rights and so you are liable.
That said, and especially when you are not monetizing other peoples' works, at the worst you receive an angry letter/mail (by a lawyer, to make it look serious) asking you to delete the publication, "or else..." And when you delete the work in question it will remain at that. If you are monetizing other peoples works things could get a bit more nasty: other than paying what you gained to the right holders, a nice fine might top things of. Now, this can all be slightly different according to the country you or the right holders are in (copyright legislation is not harmonized on a world wide level, even if there has been some convergence these last decades).

With this in mind, and in order to react to the OP's question, I wouldn't be too worried to put more or less obscure music on youtube (while not monetizing on it). In the worst case you receive that mail/letter requesting you to delete it. In the best case right holders will not manifest themselves (for whatever reason: too complex a rights situation from the start, bankrupt companies, old and forgotten things, they're all dead, nobody cares, etc., etc.).

Thank you all for your contributions. My idea was to upload old and hidden albums, to recover them before they are completely forgotten. Some are practically impossible to find and I doubt they will ever be reissued (I spent hours looking for Hasse Bruniusson's Mannaminne in every possible place and couldn't find it). Some independent or private label albums from the 70s, folk world country, weird progressive bands that have released one or two albums... Those gems for which the artists do little or nothing to make them last. That's the purpose of the channel I want to create.
