Golden Mean is an English instrumental jazz-rock quartet. In 2018, guitarist Luke Wynter of Nubiyan Twist and bassist Tom Driessler of Yussef Kamaal formed the band in London. Add to that exciting synthesisers from Lyle Barton and beats from Noya Rao's Matt Davies. Powerhouse drummer Jamie Murray joins the lineup for the Golden Mean's second release, replacing their original drummer.
The band derives its name from the enigmatic formula, also known as the Golden Ratio, which appears again in the study of math, nature, history, and music.
Following the success of the 2019 debut EP called Through Walls, Golden Mean is back with Oumuamua, an LP released in May 2023 on the London label Jazz Re:Freshed.
In 2019, they had a notable performance at the Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club in London's Soho, which is a venue where, as legend has it, British progressive jazz was born in the mid-60s. Since that memorable concert, Golden Mean has been a rising star in the scene of progressive jazz-rock, which is apparently experiencing a revival in present-day England.
Indeed, Golden Mean will take you on an adventurous voyage filled with proggy choruses, vintage synthesisers, daydreaming guitar soloing, soaring melodies, exciting grooves, and free-form yet pleasant improvisation inspired by the greats of jazz-rock from the 1970s.
