Several weeks ago, and not for the first time, someone (complained?) that they were tired of the same ol', same 'ol YES, RUSH, Genesis (Big 6-8-10) discussions.
Well, here's your chance.
Over the next several months, i hope to present one band a week that I haven't seen discussed very much or at all in an effort to change that perception.

I'll start with Teru's Symphonia, a band I discovered in the 90's. Having only read about them, I happen to take a trip to Europe during which I went on a CD buying spree. I found two titles, Egg The Universe & Clockworked Earth. I'm listening to Clockworked Earth right now. The female vocals lend themselves well to the band and are not squelchy, as some female vocals can be. The music itself, I would say, is not quite as symphonic as the name might suggest but most definitely progressive. Certainly in the upper tier of symphonic music of the era though.

So let's hear it for this first lesser discussed bands.

Great idea. You mean, Teru's Symphonia??? Currently listening to "Fable on the Seven Pillows". Kinda cool if you like neo-prog. Vocals are an acquired taste.

Have any links to hear their music?

I knew I'd heard that name somewhere before. Teru's Symphonia are on my Japanese Symphonic Prog playlist. Thumbs Up

I have their Clockworked Earth album and have enjoyed it - probably would give 4 stars out of 5. I don't know much about them, but they were making prog around the time that prog was in a bit of a rut. I think there were a couple other Japanese prog bands that came out with some decent efforts in the 1980s, like Mr. Sirius, Social Tension, Outer Limits, Bi Kyo Ran. I'm sure there are others I'm missing. Seems like a thriving scene at the time.

This is where a gibberish sentence should go but I don't want to upset the grumpy people. Embarrassed

There's a neat feature on PA Forums that's called Private Messaging. ;) Keep your gibberish conversations to yourselves.

I get a feeling progaardvark simply jumped the progaardshark and that's why he keeps adding this spam to his recent posts. xD

...

HI,

Guilty!

However, my main point was to help us become a true "archive" rather than just a site that only discusses a few bands, since most folks only float into those threads.

My thoughts are that our listening habits are a bit of an issue ... when you hear something 500 times you become "conditioned" to its sound, and subconsciously you end up comparing things, when you first hear something odd and different ... it doesn't click with what you "know" and are "familiar" with ... thus your ability to listen to something new and different sometimes takes a hit.

I think many of those folks to hear different things, but having words to say about it is another story.

The main thing in my "vocabulary" has been that the large palette of music and tastes makes it difficult for me to define a "favorite" and a top band. I simply don't!. I see these things as not something that has no talent in the human tree ... and this is the part that doesn't get through in my words when saying things like the above premise. Just like our house and the large library of literature ... look ... that's not all "toilet paper" to point a finger at a joke in one book about Mexicans! Thus, for me, none of this different stuff is ever weak or bad ... can I reserve the closet right to not like the Sex Pimples?

To me, "beauty" is not defined by Venus de Milo or another Roman statue created by a Church. And as we are seeing in the arts from many places around this world, there are a lot of things out there, but our tendency is almost always to distrust and dislike something different.

The "beauty" is the part we don't even realize ... the miracle that we're all here and can express ourselves artistically, and not just in words.

BTW ... a review of that first album will be up today I think. Listening to the 2nd album PP listed. And thx PP. Oh my God ... listening to the 2nd album ... a little Kate Bush anyone? And some really tough hard rocking of that woman's voice. More treats ... goodness ... this is fun!

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

Sounds like a very good idea to me, but if the bands are lesser known and not very obscured. Smile

Don't think I ever heard of Teru's Symphonia before... Listening now to their first album (thanks for those links, Paul!) and it is quite pleasant. Nothing groundbreaking, maybe, for the mid 80s, but very nice to hear.

Having had some overview, nice stuff.

I like this for its Kate Bush vibes.

They were one of the first "lesser known" prog bands I remember seeing mentioned in a prog catalog back in the late 80s. Mugen and Outer Limits were others. I haven't heard any of those though.
