Sounds like a very good idea to me. Bazaar is one of the most important Danish progressive bands, and yes, surely progressive music.

About Secret Oyster I'd say, they're on borderline of Jazz-Rock and Progressive Rock. 

I can also tell about Bazaar that they were one of the few progressive bands, I digged in the 1980s - which of course

doesn't make them less important.  

Denmark was the "greater Scandinavia" prog leader back in the 70's, but has been trailing by a lot in the last three decades, despite those listed in PP's list

Can I have my cinnamon/raisin roll/pastry with maple topping? Tastes much better than the music! And somehow I remember the taste of the roll a lot better than some music! Isn't that weird?

Yes, so long as you spread it with Lurpak butter. In the meantime, I'm Aching to listen to the first artist on the Danish pastry playlist. 

ACHE     Do you Ache to hear some new Symphonic Prog? Are you tired of listening to your old Genesis and YES albums? If so, why not given Ache a listen - surely the best Symphonic Prog band that no one's ever heard of and the best thing to come from Denmark since Lurpak butter. I'm spreading  some love for the magnificent sound of Ache, as three out of four albums are in English, and three out of four housewives say they prefer Lurpak butter to margarine. You'll discover Ache are as tasty as Danish pastry, which just leaves me to say "Blah Som Altid" (translation: "blah as always") as they say in Copenhagen, probably. 

AFENGINN*       Russian collusion!?? This Danish klezmer folk band sound remarkably Russian to my ears, especially on their third album "Reptilica Polaris" (translation: "Polar Reptilian").  Afenginn have been described as a b*****d ethno band with Norse melancholy and cheerful madness, which seems a fair assessment, where "cheerful madness" indicates this merry band of klezmaniacs may appeal to fans of Robert Fripp and King Crimson. Anyway, if you only listen to one Afenginn album, then why not give "Klingra" a fair hearing where Afenginn add another string to their bow - so to speak - with the Danish String Quartet providing delightful accompaniment.

That's good to know. To clear up any misunderstanding, "Years Active" just means the years between an artist's first album and their latest album, so any of those 65 Danish artists listed could potentially be still active now in 2024.

Simply because I'm not a fan of Metal. The same goes for Avant Prog/RIO too, which I've also left out of the listings, with the notable exception of Afenginn, who sound more like Prog Folk than Avant Prog to my ears. 

AKROPOLIS     It's all Greek to me. With a name like Akropolis, you could be forgiven for thinking this Grecian-sounding band are within touching distance of the prog gods on Mount Olympus, but no, they're as authentically Greek as a Danish mountaineering holiday. Akropolis don't sound particularly symphonic either - despite the misleading title of their one and only album - but they are a perfect fit for Crossover Prog, which is where you'll find them here on PA. Akropolis are authentically Danish though, just like LEGOLAND, where initial appearances can also be deceptive.

LEGOLAND - Or is it!??  

ALRUNE ROD     The Danish Pink Floyd! Alrune Rod featured in the concert film Stoned Days in Thy where "Thy" refers to the Thylejren music festival in 1971 - the Danish equivalent of Woodstock with a reported audience of 30,000, representing a huge crowd by Danish standards, where 30,000 was roughly 1% of the entire population of Denmark at that time. So if you want to hear some astounding sounds and amazing music, then why not dip into the Psychedelic Rock of Alrune Rod to discover what the rest of the world outside of Denmark has been missing out on all these years. And the best place to start? Live Aalborg 2002 without a doubt! It's as tasty as a Danish pastry spread with Lurpak butter. Do you want jam on it? Well, you've come to the right place, as Alrune Rod are one of the best jam bands you're ever likely to hear, having been compared with the Grateful Dead, only better!  

ART CINEMA     Do you remember Cinema, the short-lived offshoot of YES? Well, Art Cinema are a Danish Crossover Prog band who have a connection with Heavy Metal band Mercyful Fate, but sound far more like YES, and with a singer who sounds not unlike Jon Christian Andersen.

BAZAAR      We're travelling to Turkey now where east meets west with Danish World Music trio Bazaar. You can almost taste the warm smell of hookah pipes, rising up through the air. It's all really quite Bazaar.

BLUE SUN      The brightest stars of Jazz Rock/Fusion in the night sky over Copenhagen, whereas Sirius - one of our nearest celestial neighbours and the brightest Blue Sun in the entire northern hemisphere - is located "a mere" 8 light years away from Earth (or 80,000 years away in real time) and with an apparent magnitude of -1.46, where any star with an apparent magnitude in minus figures is very bright indeed - our own Sun having an apparent magnitude of -26.74. As Einstein one said, "It's all relative". Something to ponder whilst enjoying the music. 

LARS BOUTRUP'S MUSIC FOR KEYBOARDS     WOW!! This is Symphonic Prog like you've never heard it played before, sounding like Keith Emerson on steroids, and yes, that really is Lars Boutrup's hair on the cover of The Great Beyond. 

Another great artist from The Great Beyond of Denmark. The Symphonic Dream is highly recommended if you've never heard it before.

CAUSA SUI      Having grown tired of cringing at the sound of Danish Pop on their radios, Space Rock band Causa Sui (Latin for self-causing) became Denmark's answer to Hawkwind! 

COMA       Wake up to the sound of Coma, a Jazz Rock/Fusion band from across the Skagerrack who are following in the footsteps of Hatfield & the North, National Health and Supersister. Coma's three Canterbury Scene-style albums are worth 100 Danish krones of anyone's money. 

THE CONQUERING LIGHT OF FLORA AND FAUNA     This Danish duo were The Hive of activity back in 2009, coming up with one of the most energetic Post Rock albums you're ever likely to hear, which has been variously described as "forceful minimalism" or "useless structures coerced into a romantic sequence of misunderstandings." I prefer the first description. 

CORONARIAS DANS       No connection with Coronavirus, it's no secret that Jazz-Rock/Fusion band Coronarias Dans were the band from which the better-known Secret Oyster emerged. 

Coronavirus sounds like a tastelessly-bad name for a Death Metal band - assuming there isn't a band with that name already.

DAYS      More Danish daze and psychedelic haze from Copenhagen, although only sounding truly psychedelic on their first self-titled album, and sounding more like Soft Rock legends Smokie on their two later albums. 

DR. DOPO JAM      Hot Rats and Holy Mothers of Invention! Only Fat Dogs & Danishmen make funky Jazz-Rock sound as good as this. Dr. Dopo Jam are to Denmark what Frank Zappa is to the rest of the western world, only this band's output sounds far better than anything Zappa has ever done, sounding more like a Jazzy jam band from Heaven, instead of Jazz from Hell - although I already know every Frank Zappa fan out there is going to disagree with me, again. 

DR. SPACE'S ALIEN PLANET TRIP      Music for space aliens and Scandinavians. Dr. Space's Alien Planet Trip is a 6-part series of solo, ambient space trips from American Scott Heller (Dr. Space), founder of the Oresund Space Collective. To be honest, you'd be better off going into warp drive and taking a detour towards Alpha Centauri just to avoid these six monotonous albums of clone drones. 

DRAGONTEARS     Here be Dragons! Three cheers for Dragontears, a Neo Psychedelic/Space Rock band from Copenhagen who started off well enough, but then released their deliberately offensive third album, which I've had to censor to spare my blushes.

EFTERKLANG      A Post Rock band sounding like no other, including one of the strangest operas you're ever likely to hear (Leaves: The Colour of Falling), which makes a Philip Glass opera seem positively mainstream by comparison.

ENTRANCE       A tasty Danish confection promising a profusion of Jazz Fusion, but to avoid confusion, it's worth knowing there's at least two other prog bands with the same name. In conclusion, Entrance are pretty good as Jazz Fusion bands go, sounding like a Danish bright and breezy version of Weather Report instead of a stormy gale, so there's no need to head for the Exit before it rains. 

ETCETERA      A Symphonic Prog band consisting of a group of friends from Aarhus, Denmark, who attended a Jethro Tull concert and were so impressed, they decided to form their own prog band, as you do.

I'm not sure we can even NOT call that a rock opera! That is rather unique and .... Wagner on acid? I think I need to hear more!

BTW, Paul, this band is excellent, and their material is not leaning towards the rock song bs at all ... it is moody, has some far out filmography for some of the pieces, and the moody atmosphere is very neat and well done. 

I suppose this is not listed quite well in our book, but its material is more classically minded than it is anything else. I would almost say that this is artistically oriented stuff, rather than be some kind of a rock band. Heard "Tripper", "Piramida", the piece from "Leaves" (trying to find if there is more!), and working towards the last album to get a better idea and cover more time, in the band's work.

A hippie folk commune and experimental theatre group centred around Aalborg (something akin to a Danish version of The Polyphonic Spree)  and if Nordic female vocals are your particular kop te and svartbag, then step right in.  

FUREKABEN      From Foreningen to Furekaben, it's another obscure hippie folk collective from Denmark. It seems like the early seventies were a good time to be a hippie in Copenhagen, especially if you happened to play a musical instrument too.

STE VAN HOLM      An obscure artist even by Danish standards with videos on YouTube viewed on average between 1 and 10 times in five years, meaning the chances of ever hearing Ste Van Holm played on the radio are about as likely as finding Hillary Clinton moonlighting as a barmaid. 

IRON DUKE      Is it a battleship, a train or the Duke of Wellington? No, it's a double salvo of Symphonic Prog from Denmark's answer to ELP, including a rollicking and rocking version of Grieg's Hall of the Mountain King in the epic grand finale. A kind of Fanfare for the Common Man of Copenhagen. 

ISBJORG    Heavy duty Danish Neo Prog that should come supplied with Doc Marten boots, a hard hat and fluorescent jacket. Yes, it's Isbjorg, the musical equivalent of Ove Arup, who knows a thing or two about construction, unlike the clueless plonkers in the video below, bringing new meaning to "Danger: Men at Work!"

JONAS MUNK       A Post Rock artist from Odense and a member of Causa Sui, Jonas Munk's particular brand of electronica falls somewhere in-between Manuel Goettsching (on a good day) and Brian Eno (if you're in a somnolent mood). 

MY BELOVED      You've heard of film noir. Well, this is music noir, otherwise known as post rock. Beloved by some, but not by all, My Beloved sound like every post rock band you've ever heard before, giving the impression the band could almost post the music in without turning up in the studio, hence the term, post rock.

MYTHIC SUNSHIP       Denmark's answer to Ozric Tentacles! A number of warped factors led to the formation of instrumental Space Rock band Mythic Sunship (great name!), but one thing's for sure, they have the able assistance of Jonas Munk of Causa Sui on occasional guitar and mixing duties. After a while though, all of Mythic Sunship's seemingly interminable psychedelic space jams all mind-meld together into one endless conglomeration of similitude, so with that in mind, it's time to take a swift detour at Rigel 9 and head at warp speed for the next Danish prog artist on the A-Z list. OH NO ONO       A thought that must have occurred to Paul McCartney on more than one occasion shortly before the break up of The Beatles. Progressive Pop band Oh No Ono are quirky by name, quirky by nature, so if you're expecting something a little bit different, then you won't be disappointed. 

THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA      The Viking invasion continues with a superb Heavy Prog band named after a novel by Ernest Hemingway. The Old Man and the Sea hail from the unpronounceable district of Midtjylland in central Denmark. They have a Marshall Plan with Marshall Amps turned all the way up to eleven! They ain't playing no surf music. They're gonna play some heavy music. They're gonna play bad. They're gonna play loud. They know just what they want it to sound like. It's gonna sound like... It's gonna sound like... THIS!! 

PARKHUS 1      A profusion of instrumental Jazz Fusion, which only leads to confusion, but at least the track titles are in English - not that that's any Guide though.

THE SAVAGE ROSE       The most enduring (and endearing) Danish band of all time! The Savage Rose are led by bluesy singer Annisette Koppel (the Danish Janis Joplin?), who was a Wild Child of the seventies in her twenties and who's now a Wild Child of the twenties in her seventies. 

SECRET OYSTER       A Danish Jazz Rock supergroup (if there is such a thing), consisting of ex-members of Burnin' Red Ivanhoe, Coronavirus Dance and Hurdy Gurdy. It's no secret that Secret Oyster are one of the finest Jazz Rock bands there's even been, not just in Denmark, but in the entire world! You don't have to take my word for it though. Just check out Secret Oyster Live on the Old Grey Whistle Test (introduced by Whispering Bob Harris) in the video below. 

JAKOB SKOTT      A Progressive Electronic artist whose particular brand of Space Rock is very much on the percussive side, so it won't surprise you to know that Jakob Skott is the drummer with Causa Sui. 

SKY ARCHTECTS       Reach for the sky! Sky Architects are a high-rise band of social climbers from Aarhus - a Danish town not known for its skyscrapers - where the sky's the limit for their particular brand of  postmodern Post Rock.  

SOLANACAE      Danish Psych-Folk from guitarist Kim Larsen, a man of mystery who likes nothing better than to spend a magical night out in the woods amongst the elves and fairies. A bit like a Danish Jon Christian Anderson then.
