In another thread, I stated a belief that true Van der Graaf Generator fans prefer "Pawn Hearts" over "Godbluff". In that thread, I provided some justification for this belief. However, in this thread, I decided to put it to a more direct test. The idea is to not only separate those who prefer "Pawn Hearts" from those who prefer "Godbluff", but to correlate this with who are and who are not VdGG fans.

I am a fan of VDGG, but I'm not that much of a fan of Godbluff. It never got me. Hard to say why, just it doesn't resonate much with me. I wouldn't even put it in the first half of their albums. Pawn Hearts is great though.

Hearing Pawn Hearts made me a fan, plus music off H to He. Godbluff proved much more challenging to me, although I now do like it more. Godbluff is an album that I appreciate to variable degrees depending on the day.

Voting for the first option.

I'd say, with the very little statistic material you can get here, this poll can't prove anything concerning non-fans. Smile

Prophesy, how will you define "a true VdGG fan""?

Being very fond of H to He, Godbluff and Still Life, does it make me one?

I've given this some thought and decided it best to allow the voters to decide for themselves if they are a true VdGG fan. I'm guessing the word "fan" indicates a love of VdGG music that is beyond a mere like of their music. Are VdGG high on a list of the voter's favourite groups?

Note that I also included a "dislike both" option, which I assume only applies to non-fans. That's because I wanted non-fans to at least like one of the albums to indicate a preference, rather than voting for the one they hate the least.

VdGG-fan and voted Pawn Hearts. You're not a real VdGG-fan unless you love it (doesn't have to be your favorite album of theirs of course).

Still Life!

In all seriousness, I voted Godbluff

A better poll would be which is the better VDGG 3 album Run?

Least We Can Do - H to He - Pawn Hearts
VS
Godbluff - Still Life - World Record

I think I'll go make that poll right now actually

I don't see what this poll idea makes it a better one.

I guess I am a casual fan. I am not familiar with their entire catalog but enjoy listening to the albums I do know. I prefer Godbluff, so I guess I am not a true fan.

Not that I really have an aspiration to be a true VdGG aficionado, but to be honest, this opinion of yours hurts me in relation to my big fondness and admiration of three VdGG albums.

^ If you're that easily hurt, why ask for opinions in the first place? And why does it matter to you? So you're very fond of three VdGG albums. That obviously makes you more of a casual fan. I'm really fond of Fragile, Close to the Edge and Relayer, but I'm not nearly as exited about the rest of their "classic era-albums". I don't think I've listened to any Yes-album from start to finished released after Drama. No actual Yes-fan would consider me a genuine fan.

Happy 75 to Peter Hammill, btw!

A fan and Godbluff by a mile, don't get all the Pawn Hearts worship honestly

But of course the best VDGG album is Still Life, everyone knows that

Just wanted to point that telling people, they're not true fans, may hurt their feelings. While what is a true fan is a very subjective question. Wink

Is a true fan similar to true prog? Is VdGG true prog?

I've never heard Godbluff but Pawn Hearts is cool.

No you wrote that YOU were hurt. And what a true fan means is not really all that subjective. Come on, it's not like a "what is art?" kind of question. Fan is short for fanatic. You're obviously nowhere near a VdGG-fanatic. Nothing wrong with that, and not an important issue. Just like with me and Yes, you (really) like a few of their albums.

It's a bit like comparing Close To The Edge with Relayer in my opinion (you can decide which is which as you like). As a more longer term set in stone fan of Yes I would vote I'm A Yes Fan and prefer Close To The Edge. I haven't voted here because I'm just not sure which VDGG album of those I prefer (both are equally great). Maybe I'm just a casual fan but I did fork out for that VDGG box set.

ah, great set. I also have to pick my battles these days, but did splash out £60 on IP last years... beautifully presented and very much worthwhile...

None of the options describes me well, so I won't vote. I wouldn't consider myself a "fan", but I do like their first six or seven albums or so, including Aerosol Grey Machine which was actually my entrance into the world of VDGG - it is maybe their most 'lighthearted' album and I can appreciate that. I very much enjoy Pawn Hearts as I do enjoy Godbluff, and see no interest for myself to put one over the other so I'd actually choose both...
