David Janssen (“Ted the Loaf”) and Brian Poole (“Renaldo Malpractice”) formed their band in 1977, the duo met in the spring of 1970 in school and bonded over their love for music. The bands style is an interesting mix of Zolo Avant/Neo Medieval Folk and Psychedelia, they heavily use and manipulate tape recorders to replicate the sound of synthesizers using acoustic instruments. They manipulated tape loops and muffled and detuned their instruments. One of the earliest pieces of music they made was a multi part suite titled "Segments" along with a friend named Terry Nichols, which was completed in the spring of 1978. Before the Renaldo And The Loaf name they went under the moniker Plimsollline and sent a demo tape to a lable called Raw Records, the duo recorded an album and EP titled 'Behind Closed Curtains' and 'Tap Dance In Sushi' between September 1978 and April 1979, but shortly after the completion of the material, Lee and Raw Records disappeared, and the tapes were shelved, however after the fall of Raw Records the band had newfound confidence to approach other lables. They would eventually find Rough Trade records and the lables founder Geoff Travis would suggest the band investing in a good multi track tape recorder, a tool that would be the core to the bands sound, they were huge fans of the popular synthesizer bands at the time but couldn't afford synths themselves, this led to the recreated synth-like noises using tape effects and treated guitars. They would record their debut album Struve & Sneff and adopt the Renoldo And The Loaf name. In the early 80s Brian would visit the Ralph Records headquarters and unknowingly met a member of THE RESIDENTS and gave him a copy of their album Struve & Sneff. After being impressed they would have negotiations and eventually had Renoldo and The Loaf singed to Ralph Records, the band would continue making music and be influenced by classical European literature and even had a collaboration album with THE RESIDENTS called Title In Limbo. The band went on to release a few more albums before going on a 30 year hiatus, the band would release the album Gurdy Hurding in 2016 and would play at the Klanggalerie 25th Anniversary celebration, for which they performed their second ever live show since their formation

Renaldo and The Loaf was rejected 10 years ago. In order to restart the evaluation process we need a new release to examine. Have they released anything more recent?

Just listened to a few Renaldo & The Loaf albums recently. Really love their experimental approach but prog? Comparison to early Residents is legit but personally i never understood why they are on the site either. I guess if you expand to Experimental Archives it fits. Totally cool art punk meets zolo minimal wave with some tripped out avant-folk. One of my fave underground indie weirdo groups from the 80s!

They've apparently been releasing new material since 2014, and are thus eligible for re-evaluation.

^ There's an error in the album cover for "Behind Closed Curtains".

I've just taken it for granted that they've always been here.

Sorry, after I posted the above post, I also reported the error in the forum for reporting errors, and it was fixed there, but I neglected to indicate it was fixed here. I hope that didn't cause too much confusion.
