Subject: New to Prog, want recommendations

I am quite new to prog and I was looking to see if anyone had any recommendations. The two albums I have listened to and really like are "In the Court of the Crimson King" by King Crimson and "Journey to the Centre of the Eye" by Nektar. I tried listening to other albums by King Crimson and Nektar, but I didn't like any of the songs (with two exceptions from "red" by King Crimson).
Does anyone know and songs that are similar to those two albums? If it helps, I like all the songs in those two albums.

Fair enough, but your tastes will have to expand somewhat if you're going to continue to enjoy progressive art rock. Try Renaissance, early Genesis, Bo Hansson, the Enid, Sebastian Hardie, maybe UK.
Best of luck in your journey ~

I'd say just try the big ones. Genesis, ELP, Pink Floyd, Camel, etc, etc. Maybe throw in some Zappa, prog metal or more modern stuff if you're feeling more adventurous. As long as you keep trying new stuff, you'll find more that you'll like I'm sure.
If you like In the Court, you'll probably like their second album, In the Wake of Poseidon. Side 1 is often called a copy of side 1 of Court. It's very similar, and close in quality.

Depending on how new you are you might want to go here: https://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=130632" rel="nofollow - https://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=130632
Also, have you tried the album In The Wake Of Poseidon also by King Crimson? It's very similar.
Also, no one mentioned Yes yet which I find a bit odd. Close To The Edge is usually considered to be their ultimate prog album (and one of the very best in the entire genre). I also suggest some early Pink Floyd being that you like Nektar. You should listen to the Meddle album and especially Echoes.

I tried the suggestions I got from AFlowerKingCrimson, Stressed Cheese, and Atavachron and these were the songs I liked:
I liked Cadence and Cascade, In the wake of Poseidon, Peace - A theme, and Peace - An end in "In the Wake of Poseidon" by King Crimson.
I liked Meddle by Pink Floyd (and really liked echoes) I liked Take A Pebble in "Emerson, Lake & Palmer" by "Emerson, Lake & Palmer"
I also liked (even though it was not recommended here) Lost, but not Forgotten and Myth of a White Jesus in "The Devouring" by Djam Karet. I randomly found it and liked it.
Based on these, are there any other songs I should definitely check out?

From Pink Floyd, I suggest "The Embryo", "Interstellar Overdrive", "Astronomy Domine", "A Saucerful of Secrets" and the "Atom Heart Mother" suite. Also Hawkwind, like music from In Search of Space. Also Grobschnitt, maybe off Solar Music Live. I also will recommend Gong's The Isle of Everywhere and Master Builder. I think there's lot of Krautrock you might get into. Try Ash Ra Tempel's "Traummaschine". And try Swans' "The Sound".
I find Bubu's Anabelas has some of those In the Court qualities, but it may be too much for you.
Welcome to the forum.

Dream Theater - Images and Words (Progressive Metal)
Jethro Tull - Living in the Past (Prog Folk)
Khan - Space Shanty (Canterbury Scene)
Steve Hackett - Voyage of the Acolyte (Eclectic Prog)
Mike Oldfield - Ommadawn (Crossover Prog)
Pallas - The Edge of Time (Neo Prog)
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon (Psychedelic/Space Rock)

You may like some Porcupine Tree, for example The Sky Moves Sideways or Recordings (this one got me into them), maybe also later more heavy material such as In Absentia.

Hi, fellow forumer.
Perhaps you can try out Ozric Tentacles and Van der Graaf Generator.
Here are a couple of songs from them that I enjoy:

Also I'd just like to say if you're new to prog, sometimes it might take a little longer for an album to sink its hooks in. At least from my experience, and maybe some other posters can back me up on this. But generally we tend to like music that's more repetitive more easily, and prog rock often tends to be a bit more unpredictable. That means that it doesn't become familiar until a couple listens. Now, this generally isn't really a problem (and I'm not going to pretend prog rock is rocket science), but there are definitely a good amount of prog rock albums that I ended up liking much more than I'd expected based on my first listen. Whereas with more accessible poppy albums I tend to have the opposite (I really get into them quickly but then become bored with them rather quickly too).
So what I'm getting at I guess is, that, when you don't really like an album too much on first listen, or only like a couple of songs off of it, it might be worth it to give it another spin or two. Of course, it's tempting to just move on to something that seems more interesting, but listening to something that you're already sort of familiar with through a previous listen legit can make a difference. I guess it also doesn't help that with streaming being the main way people listen to music, it's easier than ever to just move on to the next thing (which is why I'm glad I'm still a physical music collector), but that's a whole nother story I guess.

Much like most of In the Court, t hey're all on the beautiful side of prog. I think there's a fair chance you'd really enjoy Camel - Mirage (and probably more by Camel)

Have you checked out the "Top Prog albums (all time)" search function?
There you may select the sub-genres you want and, if you want to, the years you want and countries of the bands.
If you are new to prog and based on what you liked so far, I would recommend checking out Symphonic, Crossover and RPI (if you don't mind lyrics in Italian, although there are some RPI albums sung in English too).
As others have said, with Prog it is a good practice to listen to the albums at least 2 or 3 times before deciding that "you don't like them", much of Prog takes some repeated listening to sink in, and more so when you are still a newbie to the genre.
Good luck and welcome to the wonderful world of Prog!

Thank all of you for the recommendations!
From what Logan said: I liked "Embryo" by Pink Floyd, I liked "Astronomy Domine" by Pink Floyd,
I liked "Interstellar Overdrive" by Pink Floyd,
I liked "Saucer full of Secrets" by Pink Floyd,
I liked "In Search of Space" by Hawkwind,
I liked "Solar Music Live" by Grobschnitt, I liked "The Isle of Everywhere" and "Master Builder" by Gong, I liked "The Sound" by Swans, and I liked "Anabelas" by Bubu a lot. How did you read what I would like so well?????????
From what Psychedelic Paul said: I liked "Shibuya Nights (Live in Tokyo 2007)" by Agitation Free,
I liked "Space Shanty" by Khan, I liked "Voyage of the Acolyte" by Steve Hackett (although some of the songs were a little fast-paced for me), I liked "Stranger (On the Edge of Time)" by Pallas, I liked "Dark Side of the Moon" by Pink Floyd (especially the song "Brain Damage" that one was beautiful), I liked "Ashes are Burning" by Renaissance a lot,
and I liked "Strastosfear" by Tangerine Dream a lot.
Thank you for the assortment of awesome albums!!!
From what Lewian said: I liked "The Sky Moves Sideways" by Porcupine Tree a lot and I liked "Recordings" by Porcupine Tree.
Thanks for that band recommendation. Those two albums are some of my favorites now!
From what PhideauxFan said: I liked "Sad Rain" by Anekdoten a lot.
Thanks for the recommendation of Anekdoten. I really liked "Sad Rain."
From what David_D said: I liked "Renaissance" by Renaissance a lot.
Thanks for the recommendation of that album! It sounds very high quality and if I listen to it more it has a decent chance of being one of my favorites.
From what Archisorcerus said: I liked Jurassic Shift by Ozric Tentacles.
Thanks for those recommendations! Sending those links in your post really helped me find the songs. (the most time consuming part of this has been finding the songs!)
From what Stressed Cheese said:
I started doing that when I started looking at Logan's suggestions. It has really helped! Thanks!
From what Saperlipopette! said: I liked that song you sent!
Thanks for the recommendation. Plus, what is the signature gif from? I need to know. Why are children floating in a circle. What.
From what AFlowerKingCrimson said:
I tried to listen to Yes, but I didn't like their songs. I listened to "Close To The Edge" 3-4 times and I never liked it. Sorry.
Thanks for the recommendation anyways!
From what Gerinski said:
I will do that next, Thanks!
Now I will probably go to the "Top Prog Albums (all time)" but I am not sure which subgenres these songs are. Which subgenres should I check out?

Seems like if "In the Court of the KC" is liked, then the next album ("In the Wake of Poseidon") would also be liked, since quite similar. Same for Nektar's "Tab in the Ocean" after the first album.

I did end up liking "In the Wake of Poseidon" but I didn't like "Tab in the Ocean" because my favorite part of "Journey to the Centre of the Eye" is that it tells a story (that is also why it is my favorite album), and I couldn't sense any storyline in tab in the ocean.

^ Really glad especially that you liked Bubu's Anabelas. That's a challenging listen for many an experienced Progger (the more mainstream ones) due its more out-there qualities. And we share a not like for Yes' Close to the Edge album, a rarity here it seems, which might help a bit in suggesting enjoyable music. I often have been told not to throw new people to Prog off the deep end (cough, Magma, cough). Really pleased that you took the time to listen and comment. It's very common that people asking for recommendations never comment on the choices or come back to the thread. Sometimes you get a vague, "Great suggestions everyone, keep them coming" which makes me wonder if they checked them out. I do try to base my recommendations on what people say they like usually.
At some time, maybe now, you might enjoy Godpspeed You! Black Emperor. Lift Your Skinny Fists lIke Antennas to Heaven is something of a masterpiece. It is on the more ambient side. It's a trip. Here is the first track:

You seem to like more the mellower side of prog. I understand that you didn't like Yes' Close to the Edge, but you might give a chance to some of their mellower songs, such as:
Turn of the Century
And You And I
Madrigal
Awaken
In the Presence Of
Also since you liked Renaissance's debut I would suggest also their albums:
Turn of the Cards
Ashes Are Burning
Novella
Scheherazade and Other Stories
Try also Genesis' album Selling England by the Pound

I agree with you about Yes. It would not be wise to give up on them so easily. If he didn't like Jon Anderson's vocals then he could check out the Drama album and maybe also Fly From Here.

^^ Surprised you didn't mention The Shaggs considering my loving and quite wordy responses about the band in one of your recent polls.
I would have thought that the "entitled to not like" comment should go without needing saying. That said, all those bands you mention have diversity in their music, and I would hope that one would check a fairly wide range of material before deciding that one doesn't like the band period. There are bands that I generally dislike where I still enjoy some material. I'm more of an, I dislike an album or song by a band/artist thinker than I dislike a band commonly (especially if it has released a considerable number of varied albums).
As with many bands, I love some Yes, like some Yes and dislike some Yes. I like the self-titled track on Close to the Edge a lot, but was intending a little light-hearted comment to go with "How did you read what I would like so well?????????" from the OP as I do seem to be very much in the minority when it comes to that specific album. Yes was one of the first prog bands I fell for with Fragile.
And by the way, my last post was directed at the OP in case it's not clear since your post snuck in, maybe I should have quoted.

Thanks for even more recommendations! I can't thank you guys enough!
Following what Logan said: I loved "Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven" by Godspeed You! Black Emperor. It was beautiful. My second favorite album now. Even above "In the Court Of the Crimson King" by King Crimson. Honestly it might be my favorite. I could sense real meaning in each of the songs. "Storm" felt like it was about helplessness, and the feeling of hopelessness. The feeling that your life is happening around you, but you can't control its direction. "Static" felt like it was about panic; a drawn-out descent into hysteria. Although the religious bit kind of threw me off. "Sleep" felt like it was about nostalgia; a fleeting love for the past, the sorrow of it being gone, and a feeling of anger at its passing that turns to mindless rage that slowly morphs back into sorrow. As if the past was a pit and anger was their attempt at climbing out, only for them to fall back into sorrow. Every time the anger returns, it is another attempt at escape that fails. A cycle that they never escape from. As for the final song, "Like Antennas To Heaven...", I couldn't discern its meaning. It felt like there was so much meaning there, but it was something I was not yet ready to understand. This album is one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard. I will likely listen to this album many more times. Thank you so much for telling me about "Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven." As for Magma, I did not end up liking their songs. But I might like it if I listen to it more.
Seriously, thank you for telling me about that album. It is just amazing.
Following what Gerinski said:
I liked the other Renaissance albums (I already listened to a lot of them after my previous post) I felt in-between on "Selling England by the Pound" by Genesis. (I also listened to it after my previous post) I didn't like the other Yes songs. Sorry.

I was trying for humour again with the Shaggs comment for you personally, like a little in-joke with you (I commonly like the personal touch), and failing because of my comments in your recent Shatner/ Shaggs poll. I thought your comment was partially in response to mine as I had mentioned Magma and Yes. Anyway, failed connection, no worries.

I echo this as well. I'm not a big fan of Close to the Edge either, even though that seems to be the one most people on here will recommend first. Their two previous albums (The Yes Album and Fragile) are IMO much more interesting, and different enough from Edge that you might be able to get into them regardless of what you thought of that one.
Also, OP, based on what you've liked so far you might dig the album Polygondwanaland by King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard. The opening track is a little intense (but brilliant IMO), but make it past that and I think you'll at the very least like the remaining 35 minutes. It's got a mysterious vibe and intriguing lyrics, if you're into that sort of thing. And if you don't like that, they've also got some great psychedelic stuff.

With streaming taking over, it's just not a thing in general anymore. It's only really relevant if you still actually buy stuff. So it's not really a matter of listening on youtube first, but listening on youtube only. I do tend to do this with albums by artists I'm already familiar with. E.g. recently I bought In The Wake of Poseidon without ever hearing a single second of it before. I think the only times I've really spent money on an album completely blindly was on The Six Wives of Henry VIII and Moonmadness. Moonmadness because I repeatedly failed to get into Camel despite feeling that I should like them. So I thought spending hard-earned cash on an album would be a good way to force myself to like them (I ended up loving the album). Six Wives was because it was like three bucks and I had to add another item to a Discogs order to get to the min. order amount. Honestly glad I didn't pay much more than that for it but that's neither here or there.
I guess I'm getting a bit off-topic, but what I'll say is that it's fun to go in blind, but seeing as my monthly CD budget is like enough for 5 albums, I don't really feel like taking my chances, so YT has been a godsend. And it works the other way as well, sometimes I don't think something sounds like it would be for me, but since trying something on YT doesn't cost me anything, I might as well have a quick listen. Not in a million years would I have bought a KMFDM album blind, but thanks to YT I've now learned about them. Then again, they're not prog in the slightest, so I'll yet y'all get back on topic.

I agree with you about Yes. It would not be wise to give up on them so easily.
I like "Polygondwanaland" by King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, but it was really hard for me to hear the lyrics. It is definitely a good album though!

Now I see why you're trying to narrow things down. Wish I could give you a whole bunch of free great music. Still, it is your individual path to take, and you'll take it however you can.

Yeah their mixes tend to be very lo-fi and 60's-ish, so the lyrics usually don't come across very clearly.

My favorite albums are no longer "Journey to the Centre of the Eye" or "In the Court of the Crimson King." The top two are now "Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven" by Godspeed You! Black Emperor and "Until All the Ghosts Are Gone" by Anekdoten. The close runner-ups are "The Sky Moves Sideways" by Porcupine Tree, the single "Sad Rain" by Anekdoten, and "Polygondwanaland" by King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard
Massive thanks to everyone who gave recommendations. And if anyone knows songs like these, don't be afraid to tell me them.

Wow! You move fast. Guess my Camel-tip wasn't so spot on:) But that's cool. And those are some great albums. For me GY!BE in particular. Probably my favorite band of the 1990's/early 2000's era. They'se still great btw. I'm seeing them live soon - again. A genuinely cathartic experience. Before any other reccomendation, I think you need to hear F♯A♯∞ as well.
+Love pretty much all of King Gizzard and Polygondwanaland is the perfect introduction to them. Ever heard Black Midi? Their latest Hellfire is my favorite album of last year by quite some distance. It's something else for sure and a unique experience and concept (and maybe not for everyone) - that I'm still not finished digesting.

Since the OP is on a one album per month budget, Polygondwanaland might be a name your own price album on Bandcamp. It was a few months back.
I'll add a couple of suggestions to try.
Doomsday Afternoon by Phideaux and East of Eden by Talk Talk.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor is a very good band, but it is post-rock not progressive rock.

^This touches on the everlong debate of progressive vs prog. On this site, post/math is a subgenre, so we go with that. But, I think it's fair of some people to think of prog rock and post-rock as two different genres with similar qualities that can overlap.

Its not that I move fast, its that I have been listening to "In the court of the Crimson King" and "Journey to The Centre of the Eye" like they were an addictive drug for the past year because I didn't know there was other music like it and I have the time to listen to songs online (although I much prefer vinyl) to see if I like them for most of the day.
I listened to F♯A♯∞ and really liked it. I will make sure to look at other albums by them! This is definitely going on my "Vinyl to get" list.
I was aware of the concept of black midi, but I had never heard of the band. I tried to listen to that song, but it just hurt my ears. Maybe my ears are just sensitive today, it happens, but as of right now that song hurts my ears.

Progressive rock, post-rock, krautrock; its all the same to me. As long as the music is good I couldn't care what genre its in!
I listened to the most popular song by God Is An Astronaut (according to Spotify, the "most trustworthy" source), Frozen Twilight, and I liked it.
I listened to the most popular song by Sigur Ros (also determined by Spotify), Hoppipolla, and I didn't like it. The vocals threw me off. Although this is subject to change on future listening. I listened to the most popular song by Mogwai (once again determined by Spotify), Take Me Somewhere Nice, and liked it. I already listened to some Talk Talk and liked it, as recommended by mathman0806.

To me getting two new favorite albums in favor of two previous ones, in a day or two is lightning fast. To state something like that would take years (if I actually have a favorite album). But we're all differnet and it's really none of my business.

I didn't say that Godspeed You! Black Emperor and many post-rock/metal bands are not progressive in the sense of "progression" or "innovation". I've just said that they are not influenced by 70's progressive rock bands like Genesis, Yes, ELP, KIng Crimson and so on; so for me, they don't belong this category.
And I will be back soon with some links and bands of post/alternative rock/metal and progressive black/death-metal bands I often listen to.

Well I disagree with you. Which is fine. I think of new bands heavily influenced by the 1970's as less progressive (and obviously less innovative) than those who have found a new spin of progressing rock music - and challenging what it can mean - and be.

From my collection of CDs, some "new" psychedelic / space-rock bands:
-Hidria Spacefolk (Finland),
-Moonwagon (Finland),
-Offworld (Belgium),
-Quantum Fantay (Belgium),
-Taipuva Luotisuora (Finland),
-Vespero (Russia),
-Weedpecker (Poland).
You can also listen to Ozric Tentacles and Kingston Wall, in the same style of progresssive rock.

Thanks ! I've got the CD III. And I will try to buy their fourth album. Some kind of mix between stoner and space-rock.

Does anyone here know songs that have vocals like the ones in Anekdoten songs? My favorite part of their songs are the vocals and I am curious if any of you know where I can find similar vocals.

I listened to Landberk and really liked it! Enough to go see the prices of their CD/Vinyls on discogs. Their CDs cost $40! Thats the price of 2 "Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven" vinyls! So I probably won't be getting their CD/Vinyls anytime soon.
I listened to Discipline and liked it. I listened to Eyestrings and I really liked it. I am definitely going to look at CD/Vinyl prices. I listened to Gargamel's latest album on spotify and I did not like it.
Thank you for the recommendations!

I listened to Ayreon and thought it was in-between. Although the last song that was in-between for me ("selling England by the Pound") I ended up liking after future listens.
I listened to Flaming Row and liked it, although it was almost too heavy for my tastes.
I listened to Majestic and it was just too heavy for me. I listened to Pictorial Wand and I really liked it. Its heavy sections were a definitely a "bit" heavy for my tastes, but the way it was interwoven with slower and more delicate sections (which I generally enjoyed more) was really beautiful.

From what Archisorcerus said: I liked Jurassic Shift by Ozric Tentacles.
Archisorcerus recommended "Jurassic Shift" by Ozric Tentacles and "Cat's Eye/Yellow Fever (Running)" by Van der Graaf Generator. You said you liked Jurassic Shift by Ozric Tentacles, suggesting that you didn't like "Cat's Eye/Yellow Fever (Running)" by Van der Graaf Generator. So I'll suggest "A Plague Of Lighthouse Keepers" by Van der Graaf Generator, which has a very different sound to the track you appear to have rejected:
If "A Plague Of Lighthouse Keepers" doesn't appeal to you, then I will suggest "Scorched Earth" by Van der Graaf Generator, again a rather different sound:
And if "Scorched Earth" doesn't appeal to you, then it would seem that Van der Graaf Generator are not for you.

I listened to the songs you send and I liked them for the most part. There was a minute or two during "A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers" later in the song I didn't like, but other than that it was pretty good. I had actually forgotten what that song was and I listened to it and liked it. I don't know what I was doing when I didn't put it on there (meaning I didn't like it). Thank you for the recommendation!
