Hi, An interesting list and I still have those in my collection, although half of them have been replaced by CD's, because the LP's were too heavy to carry around for this old foggie! The music was more important than the medium, and we never discussed why The Rite of Spring by Sir Conan Weirdo was good on LP, but Sir Leonardo Burnitup's version of it on CD was also good ... it didn't really matter the medium ... the music was better than the medium itself! The only thing that bothers me, is that we think that "vinyl" is more important than what each album (AND f**kING MUSIC!!!!) meant at a time when music and all the arts were stupendous and far out and neat ... we don't care about all that any more! We care about the vinyl! The fact was, that in that rather nice listing, what we (probably) should be discussing is the beauty of all the music it brought us that made the time span/period so valuable and important ... otherwise it has less meaning. Well, I can tell that the artwork, printed lyrics, good sound quality of the medium, an LP as a well-crafted material object and a copy of an original (historical) release make me all appreciate the music even much more. So there's absolutely no contradiction between appreciating the music and all the other things, on the contrary, and an LP is for me not just a matter of music but other arts as well. BUT I'd still say you've got a point there, as sometimes there can be too much worshipping of the medium, not least when the used vinyl prices get very high.

Pedro you continue to miss the point with all this about specific medium. The post is about ORIGINAL LPs, and that is the whole reason for this. Almost all of the music in this list was originally released on LP/Vinyl and probably available on 8-track and cassette. But the point is the first time we heard this music was from an LP........Most probably the 100 or 1000 time we heard this was then on a CD or a digital file in the 90s. Music lovers have a connection to LPs especially original versions because there is a HUGE personal history connected to them, it brings back memories of youth when we all first got into music, re-read your own post, even you are reminiscing about 10 records you could not part with. You don't get it.....It is about the f*ing music and how it affected/influenced/molded all of us as we were growing up and the LP for most of us is the one medium that is attributed to that effect. When I listen to any music from the 60s/70s/80s on digital/CD/streaming, the memories nowhere near come back to me like when I pull out the original LP and play that, and those memories make the music more F*ing important. If that does not register with you or anyone else, then I kinda feel sorry for you..... -------------

As it can be seen in my list, most of my faves are from the '70s, which has of course something to do with my musical preferences, but also because I like best the '70s style of artwork. Ok, it seemed like a bit of effort but why not... Firstly, ive been (and still am to some degree) a fairly, er, committed record collector for 40+ years and on some small level, record seller/trader (i'm not a 'dealer'). I adore the music but i also really value and appreciate the 'material' item, the art of the 'lp record' and all the elements that go with it, posters, promo items, etc and have (currently) between 2500-3000 lps of all types of rock, folk, jazz, classical and spoken word. I have extensively collected Early Charisma lps, singles, posters, promo items etc but dont 'actively' collect them anymore (i have most of what i want and have sold some off recently). So all the lps listed mean A LOT to me and i DO play them all, they dont sit in a museum or an 'controlled atmosphere'. On another day, i'd write a different list.. One of the comments above reminded me of an exchange with Micky many moons ago.. the medium we both agreed we both preferred was the music 'in our heads'.. when you know and love a piece of music well enough you can just use your built-in 'I player' and listen to it in your head; particularly useful i found for long motorbike journeys before the days of ear-buds or built-in music in your helmet. When I became music aficionado in the early '70s, the first about 30 albums I got were LPs. In mid-'70s, I changed to buying almost only cassettes, and due to some reasons I sold all my first LPs except from a couple. In the late '80s, when I became an audiophile, I changed back to only LPs and have been vinylphile since, but I'd love to have some of those of my first LPs I was most fond of.
