Subject: Frippless King Crimson "Spinoff" Bands

| By "spinoff", I mean they have at least two Crimson members, so not ELP. These would be Mcdonald and Giles, U.K., Bruford Levin Upper Extremities, TU, and Stick Men. Each of these very different bands represents a different period in KC's history and gives a glimpse of what the band would look like without its iconic guitarist. Other than maybe U.K., I don't see these discussed too often. What do you think of them? |

Also 21st Century Schizoid Band, featuring Mel Collins, Michael Giles (later replaced by Ian Wallace), Peter Giles, Ian McDonald and Jakko Jackszyk. Although they have only toured live, with no own studio albums. |

Welcome to PA! Your first post is impressive! Generally, they are quite excellent! Fripp excelled at recruiting amazing musicians as sidemen, and my favorite of these would be UK. Back when this one was around, if I had already known King Crimson, I would rather have seen Schizoid Band live than the actual King Crimson of the time. |

I'd count the group that made Pete Sinfield's solo record, Still, even though they didn't play live. Sinfield, Mel Collins, and Keith Tippett makes three, two if you don't count Sinfield for not playing any instruments on KC records. |

I'm rather amazed that Fripp's "Guitar Craft" students haven't been more prominent in music! I played with one of his earliest (Alonzo "Lon" Jones), who was a brilliant composer but only "okay" on lead guitar! Besides California Guitar Trio, are there any other prominent Crafties out there? They are not exactly a KC "spinoff" but have been touched by RF and his genius! ------------- I am not a Robot, I'm a FREE MAN!! |

McDonald and Giles was fascinating to me because it contained arrangements of pieces that King Crimson actually performed live when they toured Europe and the U.S. in 1969. Additionally some of the music on McDonald and Giles was written while they were touring. Which gives Crimheads a glimpse into something else completely...as it is somewhat revealing as to what kind of an album King Crimson would have recorded if McDonald and Giles had remained in the group. This particular subject has raised a lot of "what if's" and the possibilities of its outcome if McDonald and Giles had stayed. Some Crimheads have speculated that "Birdman" would have been the ultimate choice for King Crimson's second album and have went even further in stating that In The Wake Of Poseidon would have indeed NOT sounded like a poor attempt to repeat the sequence of musical odyssey on In The Court Of The Crimson King. I appreciate the reality that McDonald and Giles was recorded and released. I often play McDonald and Giles..and Poseidon out of curious observation regarding just how different the second album would have been. At least we have both albums available to us and I'm thankful for that. |

I don't have a full list or anything but this is rather incorrect. Trey Grunn has released a lot of music. Markus Reuter has also released a lot of music (solo, centrozoon, sonar, Stephan Thelen, Europe String Choir, etc). Wasn't one of the people from Goldfrapp and now Coldplay also a crafty? Chris Traynor that has played in a bunch of band was also a crafty. Wasn't Frank Gambale a crafty as well? Bill Rieflin (from KC but also Ministry, etc) was associated for a long time with GC as well. I wouldn't be surprised if Sean Malone (Cynic, Gordian Knot, etc) was a crafty either for example.

By the way, California Guitar Trio has two albums with Tony Levin and Pat Mastelotto (one live, one studio). So they qualify has a Frippless King Crimson "Spinoff" Band...

The Crimson Projekt, a mixture of Adrian Belews Power Trio and Stick Men. I decided to listen to their album "Live In Tokyo". They're definitely a interesting spin-off being essentially a second Double Trio. Steve Hackett's mostly live album (17 live tracks plus 2 or 3 studio bonus tracks depending on release) "The Tokyo Tapes" is a nice live album with such a band featuring John Wetton on bass, guitar and vocals, Ian McDonald on flute, sax, guitar, keyboards and vocals, Julian Colbeck on keyboards and vocals, Chester Thompson on drums and Steve Hackett not just replacing Robert Fripp on guitar but also on harmonica and vocals. the band even plays two songs from ITCOTCK -------------  A shot of me as High Priestess of Gaia during our fall festival. Indeed a very nice album. It actually made me like Watcher of the Skies, which never clicked with me until I heard this version. I think it just sounds warmer. |
