Yah-soo! A new blog for the New Year ahead! This is a celebration of all things Greek for those Greek geeks amongst us who know there's a lot more to Greek prog than just Aphrodite's Child and Vangelis. With thanks to Octopus-4 for the inspiration for this blog, which should hopefully avoid any further controversy over whether or not Greece is part of Eastern Europe.

Well, you'll know a lot more by the time I reach the letter "omega" and if you want to have a listen to a great album from the first batch of Greek prog, then check out the sound of Aries!

Me neither. I don't want to reopen that can of Greek worms again, so to speak.
At least we're all agreed that Greece is at the southern end of the Balkan peninsula.
I'm currently in the process of moving all of the Greek bands over to this blog from my East European Prague Archives blog.

So I've removed them from my post as well, and can tell here that my fave Greek albums are:
Aphrodite’s Child - 666 (1972)
P.L.J. Band - Armageddon (1982)
Ciccada - A Child In The Mirror (2010)
Naxatras - Naxatras (2015)

Plenty to look forward to there, and at least I won't have to wait long to feature Ciccada in my alpha to omega listings, although I haven't yet figured out where the letter "C" fits in the Greek alphabet.

Pardon the interruption, but may I recommend La Tulipe Noire, a neo prog band from Athens that was active from 1992 to 2017? I have two of their albums and thought they were nicely done. I believe most of their albums are YouTube accessible.

Great suggestion! I'll be happy to add La Tulipe Noire to the Greek prog playlist, just as soon as I've figured out whether they should be listed under the letter "L" or the letter "T"
1992: La Tulipe Noire - Words of the Wind
1996: La Tulipe Noire - In the Gates of Dream
2000: La Tulipe Noire - Shattered Image
2002: La Tulipe Noire - Faded Leaves
2006: La Tulipe Noire - Nostimon Hemar
2013: La Tulipe Noire - Matricide

Yes, at least "phi" sounds more phonetic for the letter "F" than "degamma".

I would've overlooked them completely if you hadn't mentioned them, as neither artist are listed here on PA. It's also good to hear they both sound much more proggy than George Michaelopolopolous.

Ciccada are one of the best Greek artists I've heard so far, although I still have a keyboard player by the name of Vangelis to listen to yet, and together with Demis Roussos (coming up here later) that'll complete the solo works of all three members of Aphrodite's Child, including their often-forgotten drummer, Loukas Sideras

Hi,
Of this first batch (A thru E) AFFORMANCE is far out and excellent. APHRODITE'S CHILD I was already aware in the late 60's as my sisters had brought out albums from France and Italy, where they were fairly well known. AWAKE & GALLO is very good ... and a nice listen.
I was gonna say that both Afformance and Awake & Gallo belong to the club ... "look ma, I'm not playing progressive (and repetitive) $hit!"
Will continue to listen to the rest of the list. That one song about Osanna is funny to my ears! Osanna, sadly enough is not appreciated much as far as I can tell. We were aware of them in the early 70's for what I believe was a bunch of shows they did with costumes ... which ANGE was also doing in Paris and France, btw. Story goes that GENESIS was the opening act for Osanna somewhere in Italy, and one of the guys in that band copied them and then "invented" the costumes for the rock stage ... !!!!!
I'll make a point of listening to everything listed here ... there are some far out things listed. Well done Paul.

Hi,
(from the second batch of the listing!)
Daemonia Nymphe - REMIX. Enjoyable, even though I think some folks might find this weird, but it seems to be ritual centered and also based on a lot of literaly stories about many things. The "Remix" album is almost a must have for folks that like things that are DISTINCTLY different.
Daemonia Nymphe - KRATAIA ASTEROPE. Like the REMIX album, this is some different stuff not defined by the conventional tastes that we often have. This is very different stuff and makes DCD sound like a poor new age band!
Daemonia Nymphe - MACBETH. Extremely theatrical stuff that really goes with their earlier material. In many ways this is to my ear a nice tribute to the old days in Greece and their music, that often went along with the plays, and were likely to sound more like this than otherwise, since the "sounds" had to be carried without amplification. I suppose that this is a production of MACBETH that we would all want to see. Much "truer" to its source and time, than otherwise. Really well done stuff and this would have added a massive touch to the play!
One of the very best things I have heard in some time ... this is tremendous and what an asset this would be to the play, and its presentation. Can't say enough about this.
Darnakes - LIBRA. Interesting stuff, but more towards the pop side of things than progressive, but fun to listen to, since you don't know if they are serious, or just having fun. To my ears it seems like they are in a bar having fun with some material, and granted ... it is well presented and nice, but I would imagine that this is more on the vein of the popular material that folks would be used to in a traditional faction.
Darnakes - SCORPIO. Compared to the previous album, I think this is a bit more serious and intentionally sounding a little more towards the rock sound of things, instead of the previous material that seemed to have a lot of traditional music style infused into it. I'm not even sure how I feel about this one, since it is so different from one album to the other to my ears.
Deadfile - MISS SIBYLLINE, Pt1. Based on this piece, I would think this is probably ... "space classical music" ... if there is such a determination. It's not weird, and it is meditative, and very active, and the very different instrumentation and design is very nice, and carries it well. And then, the film bit in the middle ... I don't get it ... assuming there is something to "get". And it goes back to the spacy stuff ... as if you needed a mental break! I have to admit that things that are way out there are always interesting, although I don't seem to find old Hollywood that interesting.
Deadfile - MISS SIBYLLINE, Pt2. Another classical piece, and a beautiful one at that, just like the first one, although this one seems to be more straight forward. Towards the middle it has some nice changes that are interesting, that don't seem to take away from the piece. Very very enjoyable.
Echo Tattoo - MIND YOUR STEP. (On this day's listens, this is the first conventional song band from the material I listed above.) Nice to listen to, but maybe not "special" in its creativity. Nice singing voice at the lead.
That's a few hours ... of nice stuff!!!

Hi,
(Up to almost halfway on Page 2)
{{NOTE: Usually means I might not have listened to the whole album, but did hear the piece in question and (usually) at least one more or so depending on how it grabbed my ears.}}
Yiorgos Fakanas - Acrobat ... towards the jazz fusion stuff with a very definite Southern California touch for music in my ears. ("partial review")
Yiorgos Fakanas - Echoes ... Nice stuff, that I think fits more into the "nice stuff" or "soft jazz" that is centered on melody, rather than jazz itself, even though it goes through several changes. Not great, but at least showing someone's musicianship.("partial review")
The Flow - Incubation ... What a wonderful start. In a very light jazzy sort of way, it takes us along really well. Very pretty start with "Topic". I will admit that I'm not sure how the words/lyrics (occasional in some obviously pre-defined moments). "Touch of Frost (pts 1 and 2)". A few more words are used here, but this is also a rather nice piece, and the band breaks into the normal "format" of popular music, which in the first piece they had not shown. The first piece was strictly about the piece of music meditative feel. This 2nd piece is not that until what must be its 2nd part. Very nice. "Spacestation 61" is another nice soundscape. The album is mostly very nice and soft material. A very nice listen.
Forbidden Myth - Zantea Chronicles ... The most conventional of all these bands listed (so far) but that's not to take it away from this work. It has some wonderful keyboard work, and lyrical content which tells its story. Nice stuff, not great, although I'm not sure I would consider this "progressive" simply because the album is a concept.
Yiannis Glezos - The Roses of Pieria ... All of the music in this album is inspired by "Ancient Greek Lyric Poetry". "Lament" with a nice heavy guitar that seems to want to take over, but never does, this flows rather nicely. "The Roses of Pieria" is better described as theme music, or at least, what I might suggest as soundtrack music, though I think you might have to follow the poetry to get the imagery. It is nicely done, and reminds me of other works out there of the instrumental nature. "Spring Angel" is another nice piece. Faster paced but well put together so the solos develop the music further instead of simply repeating the material. Strong piece and a nice one to play on radio broadcasts, though it might not quite be the best representation of the album. "A Friend Far Away in a Foreign Land" is another nice piece, possibly a bit melancolic and romantic, but still a very nice touch. All in all a very nice album to have, although this is "nice music" and not exactly progressive per se, although the instrumentation of the material is excellent through out the album.
Socrates - Phos ... one of the things that was played on Space Pirate Radio way back in 1976. The album had Vangelis in it and the stuff in it was very nice.
Hieronymus Dream - Nostos ... The album seems to be based on Homer's Odyssey, or at least it is a "journey" that the band undertook to get this done. "Odysseus Raft" is a gentle start to this piece and very enjoyable, and you keep thinking that a rock riff will come out of it, but this is not a "rock" album, as much as it is a "journey" album, and there are no ego defining solos to show how good it is ... it sticks with its continuity and theme, and avoids the familiar and repetitive styles of pop music. It's almost "symphonic" in its continuity and probably deserves that definition for its way of telling a story via instrumental music, something that rock audiences can not appreciate as much, as so much classical music has for hundreds of years. "The Island of Lotus Eaters" develops slowly around the guitar and it is very neatly crafted and played. There is no hurry, and it takes us with its touches. "Circe's Secret" is slightly similar to the previous piece. I think folks might find this similar to the previous piece. All in all a nice album which makes for a nice comfortable listen. Makes you wonder what we are missing in the Greek Lyric of antiquity ... though I have always found the English translations to be horrible and invoke wrong images that did not exist or were a part of that time in Greece.
Intravenous - Oiseau ... What a wonderful start this has. So simple. As it gets more serious into a solo section, it is interesting, but it returns to the simple stuff. As it reaches past half way it starts its journey into the experimental and likely a lot of improvisation. It actually works and sounds fine and is very listenable because it is not doing the expected, and it flows rather nicely. Very enjoyable piece.
Iraklis - Pezis Me Tis Mihanes ... (The toob stuff is not translated and it is hard to know what things are, btw) ... Prog pop to my ears. Didn't catch me much.
Jargon - The Fading Thought ... "Time is Running Out"/ "In Search of the Invisible Line"/"The Film"/"The Fading Thought". Although this is piano driven, it feels like this is symphonic and really well done progressive music, although no one here does the show mamma your talents or riffs! Soft for the most part, and tight. Well done stuff.

Hi,
All The Kings & Queens are Dead finally - The Yesterdays ... Always the Jester/Tricky Moon/Dreams of Flesh and Bones Pts 1 and 2 and 3/Gather Darkness, Gather. A very enjoyable and soft trip, that feels more like folk rock than it does anything of the progressive kind, and it is pretty with a wonderful woman's voice to take you along.
Mike Kyre - The Lands of Nowhere ... Supernova/Serenity Flows/The Sands of Time/Broken Hourglass. Some nice stuff, but in my ears there is too much ripping around on the guitar, and as PP said Greece's answer to Joe Satriani, and a few other thrashers out there. with a nice touch here and there, but otherwise, I would think the guitar riffing is nice but not exactly satisfying in the end as a piece of music that takes you on a trip ... unless you like scales by the hundreds in a few seconds!
Lunar Miasma - Arrival ... Arrival/Second Moon. I don't know if this is fair to say, but this reminds me of the very early days of TD when they took their time to develop their pieces of music, and this made a couple of albums really far out and spacy. It doesn't sound like them at all, but it is a nice piece that slowly flows along. Very electronic. However, this is not from the melodic/soundtrack like material that TD has at all ... this might be a bit more experimental material on the synthesizers than anything else.
Lunar Miasma - Managing The Dream ... Fields/Managing the Dream/Hypnopompic Speech/The Unconscious. The same style start, of a hypnotic sound that flows along with small changes. Soft listen for the ears, and only the last piece does not quite fit with the other 3, however, the only difference is the "noise" over the music itself. Still nice. Not great in my book, but nice to listen to. Again, nice, but not great.
Luup - Meadow Rituals ... Horse Heart/Taurokathapsia/Cream sky/Spiraling/Roots Growth/See You in Me
Luup - Canticles of the Holy Scythe ... Why Are The Mountains Black/Feat. Sofia Sarri/Ha Idra Rabba Qadisha. This is Chamber Music with electric instruments, and voice. it is, for my ears, very academic, and not at all minding the tastes of a popular group. As such, it creates material that is very different, and sometimes a bit weird, or harsh, and not always perfect for the ears, in a satisfying manner that we would like. I'm not sure I am discussing this properly ... their material is too far out there in some other land, and difficult to say something of value. I suppose that "chamber music" is the best description and very modern at that ... but also a bit weird and intentionally off key in the desire to be different. Music for those that collect a lot of classical music, where this might be more appreciated than within a rock audience.
Methexis - The Fall of Bliss ... Eradicated Will/Poetic Mirrors Wound Heroes/Those Howling Wolves. for my tastes this is a bit too conventional for my tastes. The longer cuts are nice, in a lot of ways, if you can let go of the "look ma, I'm gonna do a prog guitar solo" thing, and then a minute later "look ma, I'm stopping the guitar and gonna sing!". All in all it is rather nice, although it is way too much like a lot of things out there ... nice, but you end up not remembering them, even though it has some nice parts and pieces.
Missigno - Binary Digit Temple ... Binary Digit Temple/Access Injection/Merfolk Sensei/Digital Parasites/Checkpoint 1. What to call this might be the question. It is nice stuff, maybe a bit on the jazz side of things with a little bit of that old analog weirdness to make it fun, instead of "serious music", which I think might make it more interesting, however, I'm not sure of how good this is ... strange in parts, but generally listenable, although not conventional in the strictest sense of the word. The synth effects keep it fun all the way.
Mother Turtle - Zea Mice ... Kukururu/#Corn Hub/Sea Mice/Zeitenlik/Vermins. Instrumental stuff that is reminiscent of Jean-Luc Ponty, but that might just be my ear hearing the violin, although I think that JLP is a bit more animated, than just playing melody. The main concern I have here is the music going left and right and the drumming staying the same. Very poor drum design for what would otherwise be a really nice bunch of folks with some far out material. It just boggles me that the music goes left, and then right, then up and then down ... and the drumming stays the same. Doesn't cut it. Nice material, but I would like to see it be better defined and designed, specially when it comes to the drums! You get the feeling that sometimes it is trying hard to sound like some version of King Crimson on a bad night, but I'm not sure that BB will ever be found to be that poor, or out of it. At least by his words!
Naxatras - Naxatras II ... Oort Cloud/Proxima Centauri/Sisters of the Sun/The Great Attractor. I know I am not a great fan of the time keeper beginner drummers, but here is another example, right from the first piece (2nd actually) which is a sort of development of a theme as it gets stronger, and harder, and the drums? Put me to sleep, sadly enough! And by the time you get to the 3rd piece and 4th piece, nice or not, your ears simply won't be there. I would love to see this stuff better designed and defined so it can be considered "progressive" ... as it is, like MOTHER TURTLE, it comes off as very elementary and not a good listen to many of us "progressive" listeners. It gets to the point where you can't even say this is neo-neo-neo something or other!
No Brain Cell - Monuments ... Man of Silence/Take Me Far Away/Fable of the Dreamers/Child/Intermission. From a very nice start, to ... metal? It has a feel that reminds me of PT, but that may be unfair on my part. Interesting mix right from the first cut. Even the notes on the toob suggest that, which I don't specifically care for, but in many ways, it shows a side of PT that we did not hear at all, and it was one without SW and his lyrics. A lot smoother, though not as raw, as PT used to sound, before they became a studio slick band that had a lot less to offer. Towards the later spots in the album, I was thinking that if this was a new PT album, that we would have liked it a lot more.
Next ... No Clear Mind

^ Hi Mosh. I'm glad you're enjoying the carnival of Greek music as much as I am. Who knew there was so much Greek prog out there just waiting to be discovered!? Not me, that's for sure, when the only Greek band I knew before joining Prog Archives was Aphrodite's Child. Here's a couple more bands you may like to check out now that we've finally reached the last letter in the Greek alphabet.

Hi,
I'm planning to hear all of them, and post a comment or two. It's not meant to be a review at all, since I only did a large portion of the albums, and not always the whole album, but hopefully it adds to the knowledge and appreciation of many bands the world over, not just Greece.
From my own knowledge and according to my sisters who travelled a lot in Europe (Manuela is still in Paris), Italy and Greece were probably the most active, and later many other countries did as well. Italy, had a lot of pop music going, and apparently still does, which made it hard for the rock bands to get greater acceptation, but in the end, they are well remembered for their work. But, honestly, that's as much as I can tell you about those countries. We need to do France ... which has a very large contingent as well, though it's differences and variations are enough to drive us mad!

So let me get this right. There aren't any Greek prog bands currently active?

No, it's just me that's no longer active on this blog. I already added Dennis Roussos but decided to draw the line at adding Mama Mouskouri too.

A-Z of Greek Prog
FORBIDDEN MYTHThe finest export from Greece since the Elgin Marbles first rolled up onto British shores at the turn of the 19th century - for which the Greeks have never quite forgiven us. Forbidden Myth is the brainchild of Antonis Adelfidis - Greece's answer to Rick Wakeman - ably assisted by multi-instrumentalist George Katsanos, playing together on just about every keyboard instrument they could lay their hands on, and with a cast list of supporting players almost as long as Ben Hur. It's also worth mentioning that Katsanos is a mighty fine singer too. This is the greatest partnership since Burton & Taylor, Bogey & Bacall, or Marks & Spencer. There's an old saying that you should beware of Greeks bearing gifts, but when those same Greeks come bearing gifts of prog albums, then you should welcome them with open arms and with love and kisses too. In the vast pantheon of prog, Adelfidis & Katsanos joins that long list of Greek heroes including, Theseus, Perseus, Odysseus, Vangelis, Roussos & Sideras. Okay, so the first three Greek heroes never formed a prog band as far as I'm aware, but the last three names were all in the same band. You won't find an Achilles Heel in the astounding sounds and amazing music of Forbidden Myth though, as this stunning album is a pure 100% masterpiece from beginning to end. In fact, you won't have heard such masterful keyboard wizardry as this since caped crusader Rick Wakeman first stunned us all with his acclaimed Myths & Legends album. Forbidden Myth target the listener with rip-roaring power chords with the unerring accuracy of a laser-guided Paveway missile. Zantea Chronicles: The Dream Dominator is the towering Acropolis on the Mount in terms of epic prog albums, which even surpasses all of Ayreon's magnificent masterworks. You'll find Forbidden Myth listed under Heavy Prog on ProgArchives, although they almost found their way into the Progressive Metal category, which really wouldn't have done them justice. After all, Zantea Chronicles is far better than any album I've ever heard by Dream Theater, although I can now hear howls of derision coming from DT fans. It's truly an epic album too, running at over 100 minutes long, in the true tradition of Ayreon's epic productions, making it excellent value for money. If you have the good fortune to buy this fine album, then it'll be the best 4,000 drachmas you ever spent. In the vast progosphere, Forbidden Myth are as good as it gets and Zantea Chronicles joins some of the finest European prog albums from Holland, Italy and Germany. And so, for any German prog fans out there, "Das ist Verboten Mythos. Danke schoen und gute nacht."

Thank you very much for your kind words, but I think you are exaggerating a bit. Forbidden Myth are not in the same level with Dream Theater and Ayreon, and I am much worse than Rick Wakeman (I don’t even have a cape 😂), Vangelis and all the others you mentioned. George Katsanos is the multi-instrumentalist and the virtuoso. I am the composer and just a good keyboard player. And I am not a singer, as you know 8 very good singer sing in the album.
When it comes to the marbles, we have a lot in Greece so I don’t hate you for that 😂. Either way thank you very much!

THE 4 LEVELS OF EXISTENCE The 4 Levels of Existence only existed just long enough to produce one album, recorded in about ten hours and released on an obscure underground label, but that's the stuff of which prog legends are made. The album is a tasty Greek salad of Psychedelic Rock, spiced up with a light sprinkling of feta cheese. The lyrics are all in Greek, but that's part of its endearing charm. In spiritual tradition, the name of the band and eponymous album is a reference to the four Sanskrit levels of human existence. Namely, the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual bodies. To improve physical well-being, you could try walking, stretching, massage, yoga, running, dancing or swimming. Or alternatively, if that all sounds like too much hard work and you want to save a lot of time and effort, why not just listen to the album instead. It'll only take 35 minutes of your time and you don't even need to take any vitamin supplements.

AFFORMANCE Oh, what an Afformance! This is contemplative music for the psyche and the soul. Afformance are listed as Post Rock/Math Rock here on PA, although Math Rock doesn't really add up for me. Either way, you can expect to hear plenty of ambient soundscapes from this Greek quintet, so not exactly a Peloponnesian potpourri of pop, but don't let that subtract from the sound of Afformance, as their spacey introspective albums are something soothing to while away the hours whilst contemplating your navel, when you've got nothing more exciting to do than rearranging your sock drawer. There's really not much to choose between Afformance's four albums and two EP's, but Music for Imaginary Film #1 certainly has the most intriguing title, and if spending an entire afternoon watching deeply introspective Ingmar Bergman movies is your idea of fun, then this is the album for you!

A-Z of Greek Prog
AKRITAS The empire strikes back! An "Akritas" was a frontier soldier of the Byzantine Empire, guarding against the Muslim hordes from the Middle East. Alternatively, it's also the name of a Greek-Cypriot football club, although we'll stick with the former definition as it's more in keeping with the theme of Akritas' compelling concept album. The stunning artwork on the album cover depicts a young girl floating in the endless depths of space with a huge spiral galaxy pictured in the background. "Fascinating!" - as Mr. Spock would have said. And so, onto the music itself, which takes us to the final frontier of prog, - and just like Captain Picard - it's baldly going where no one has gone before. It's really difficult to pin this enterprising band down to one particular genre - as we like to do here at ProgArchives - and so, inevitably, Akritas have found their way into PA's Eclectic Prog section. One thing I can say about this amazing album is, it sounds like the best album that Aphrodite's Child never did. It's a rare treasure of Greek psychedelia, which sounds so Greek that you're almost there in the ancient Acropolis of Athens with the warm smell of moussaka rising up through the air. So why not break open a bottle of ouzo and celebrate one of the most obscure and mesmerizing albums to ever emerge from the Greek archipelago. Go tell the Spartans, and go tell all of your friends too, because this is the most exciting musical act ever to come from Greece since George Michael first arrived on British shores and formed the pop duo, Whamos Ridgeleyakos Kakos, otherwise known as Wham!

A-Z of Greek Prog
APHRODITE'S CHILDCome with me to the End of the World as we meet the three kings of Greek Prog. Namely, singer Demis Roussos (1946-2015), drummer Lucas Sideras (born 1944), and keyboard legend Evangelos Odysseas Papathanassiou (1943-2022), better-known to us all simply as Vangelis, and collectively-known as Aphrodite's Child. The "king of the kaftan" Demis Roussos was the most unlikely-looking sex symbol, with his portly frame usually dressed in multi- coloured bell-tent kaftans. His solo career after Aphrodite's Child was even more successful, guaranteeing that he'll be remembered forever and ever. The drummer Lucas Sideras may be largely forgotten now, but he did release a solo album and he was something of a sex cymbal in his time too. Vangelis of course needs no introduction from me, other than to say he's one of the greatest keyboard players who's ever lived! Aphrodite's Child have the singular distinction of being the only Symphonic Prog band ever to emerge from the Peloponnesian peninsula of Greece. Aphrodite was the Greek goddess of love and beauty and there's plenty to love in the beautiful music of Aphrodite's Child. Their first of three acclaimed albums features such evergreen classics as "End of the World" and the lovelorn "Rain and Tears" with their follow-up album including the heart-rending title track, "It's Five o'Clock", and the plaintive cry of "Marie Jolie". It's their third and final epic though, "666" (the number of the beast) which proved to be a Revelation, where hellfire and damnation were spurned to enable its release. "666" is a double album and musical tour-de-force which is generally the most highly- regarded Aphrodite's Child album amongst prog fans. As well as including the aptly-titled "Break" - sadly recorded just before the band broke up - the album also features the unforgettable "Infinity" with Irene Papas, which - depending on your point of view - either sounds like a wailing banshee, or a five minute orgasm!

A-Z of Greek Prog
APOCALYPSIS Holy Moses! Apocalypsis are a Revelation and a Testament to the awesome power of prog that this Biblical epic has really stood the test of time. The music is served up in Biblical proportions too, with gallant knight and keyboardist Vasilis Detilis boldly leading the way on his gleaming white charger, ably assisted by The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypsis. Namely, Giannis Palamidas on vocal duties, Achileas Spyrou on guitars, Harris Photopoulos on bass and Stavros Sidiropoulos bringing up the rear on drums. Apocalypsis' eponymously-titled debut features six fairly lengthy compositions with suitably intriguing titles, consisting of:- 1. Metepsychosis; 2. Threat; 3. Expiatory Victim; 4. Lies, Mistakes & Closin' Eyes; 5. My Death at a Rugby Game; & 6. Journey in the Night. The histrionic falsetto of the singer, with trousers so tight you can guess his religion, is something of an acquired taste, sounding like a curious cross between Russell Mael of Sparks and Daevid Allen of Gong, but at least the lyrics are all in English - although it's not always easy to tell. The music is mainly keyboard-driven with enough dynamic changes of tempo and sudden chord changes to keep even the grumpiest of prog fans happy. Apocalypsis' second and final album sounds even better than the first, with grandiose pomposity in abundance and with noticeably improved production standards too, making it an album you just can't say "No" to. All in all then, Apocalypsis is not the end of the modern world as we know it, but the beginning of a love for the ancient world of Greek prog - especially for the bearded classical Greek prog scholars amongst us.

A-Z of Greek Prog
ARIES Ram-bam-ba-lamb! It's written in the stars that Aries are the most exciting thing to happen in Greece since the ancient Battle of Thermopylae, when the Persians defeated the Spartans, winning 2-1 after extra time. You don't need to climb Mount Olympus to meet the prog gods, because the tremendous trio of titans are all right here on this one amazing album. This is Space Rock, Jim, but not as we know it, going boldly where no Space Rock album has ever gone before (split infinitives permitting!). "Because of My Fears" is light years ahead of any Space Rock album I know of, and where you'd have to travel to the distant galaxy of Andromeda to hear anything even remotely approaching this magnitude of brilliance. Aries shines as brightly as a distant Quasar - the brightest object in the known universe. The album is one long continuous five-part suite of music, so set the controls for the heart of the Sun, power up into interstellar overdrive at max factor five and prepare for a fantastic voyage of a lifetime in the best 43 minutes you've ever spent outside of the bedroom. It's a stellar stunner! What REALLY sets this fabulous album apart though, is the beautiful siren-song call of the charming female vocalist. After all, when was the last time you ever heard a female lead singer on a Space Rock album? Probably never. The pounding percussive power of the Duracel drummer is worthy of a mention too, sounding like a battering ram with an artillery barrage of sound the like of which we haven't heard since the furious fusillade of cannon fire at the climax of Tchaikovsky's triumphal 1812 Overture. And let's not forget the incredible guitarist either, whose psychedelic, purple-haze freak-outs would make Jimi Hendrix jealous. This stunning Space Rock extravaganza is a sonic blast from beginning to end and one of the most electrifying albums you'll ever hear this side of the Milky Way galaxy. Ad Astra!

A-Z of Greek Prog
AWAKE & GALLO The truth is out there! An album for fans of the X-Files, so don't blame me if this creepy burnt offering scares the living daylights out of you. Awake & Gallo have the notable distinction of being the only Krautrock band ever to emerge from Greece, although not a total surprise when you consider that Germans weren't exactly flavour of the month there during World War Two after heavily bombing the Greek port city of Piraeus, along with the Nazi Fokkers machine-gunning civilians from the air. The list of Nazi war crimes against Greece is longer than the Unter den Linden in Berlin. Thankfully, these days when the Germans invade Greece every summer, it's only to be the first to lay their beach towels on the sun-loungers beside the hotel swimming pool. Anyway, enough about the war. Awake & Gallo are tripping the light fantastic with a haunting, LSD-inspired album that takes you on a mind-blowing odyssey into a shadowy demon-haunted world of psychedelic purple haze that drifts in and out of the consciousness like a bad dream - or like some dark nightmare vision in The Twilight Zone. Beware! This spooky, atmospheric album of phantasmagorical delights will wrap its warm tendrils around your heart and grab you by the throat. It may even be enough to give Mulder & Scully the creeps and freak them out. "In Search of the Universal Truth" is destined to seductively charm its way into the inner recesses of your brain and not let go. This is sonic nirvana for the mind, body and soul. It's an ideal album for listening to late at night during a thunderstorm with the lights turned down low, as you drift gently away into the arms of Morpheus. Just make sure you lock all of the doors and windows first and remember to check under the bed. Awake & Gallo's second album sounds even more dark and sinister than the first - hardly surprising with a title like "Ultra Violence World" - but their third and final album is Prescription Only, so you'd have to order it from your local medical practitioner.

I'm sure it'll be an absolute stunner! The chances of me not liking it are about as likely as Britain returning the Elgin Marbles to Greece.

A-Z of Greek Prog
AXISHey Hey Hosanna! A Greek treat and an Axis of Love with religious overtones, Axis had something of a cult following in Greece (just don't tell Scientologists their religion is really a cult, as they tend to get rather annoyed) Don't worry though, you don't have to don orange robes, shave your head, or prance around in a circle chanting "Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna, Krishna". No, it's simply that with a church organ and heavenly choir in attendance, one can't help feeling a sense of spiritual love and devotion is in order. The opening song "Osanna" is a happy-clappy feel-good song, so feel free to clap and sing along if the spirit so takes you. And with that in mind, I hope you'll abide with me as we say a prayer and give thanks to the Prog Gods on Mount Olympus for giving us this heavenly blessing of Greek Prog:- "Our father, Who art in prog heaven, Give us this album and forgive us our Genesis "Trespass" album, For thine is the kingdom of Prog, And the power and the glory of Greek Prog, Forever and Ever, Amen to that! Ela Ela (Greek for "Hey Hey") is an album for those discerning prog fans amongst us who prefer their prog a little on the lighter side, with music as warm and comforting as a favourite fluffy cardigan, and sounding as comfortably familiar as Aphrodite's Child's first two poppy prog albums. The name of the band "Axis" is a sly reference to Jimi Hendrix, so you can expect to hear plenty of groovy, psychedelic pop tunes along the way with the occasional guitar freak out thrown in for good measure too - and all lightly sprinkled with an unmistakable Greek flavour that's as enjoyable as an evening of plate-smashing at your local Greek restaurant. And the highlight of the album? The final track: "Bad Trip" - a grandiose and magnificent prog spectacular - which you may well have heard before - that has all of the pomp and ceremony of Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance March at the Last Night of the Proms. Overblown? Maybe. Glorious and magnificent? Definitely! A word of warning: the first two Axis albums are really one and the same album with the tracks listed in a different order, which sounds as dodgy as some of Del Boy's hooky gear down at Peckham market.. Oh, and one more thing: there was a third Axis album, released in 1973, which is still a mighty fine album, but it's something of a witches brew, so it's really one for Jazz Fusion freaks. An edgy and challenging album to listen to maybe, for those who like to dice with danger, but not nearly as hazardous as cooking sizzling sausages on a barbecue at a naturist resort.

BLACK STRAT BAND Kalimera Corfu! The beautiful sun-blessed isle at the northwest frontier of Greece is where these four talented guys hail from. Not much happens on the sleepy Greek island of Corfu, but Black Strat Band are the most exciting thing to happen there since the great naval battle of Arginusae during the ancient Peloponnesian War between the Greek city states of Athens and Sparta. Back to the present day now, and If the name of the band and the striking silver "V" on the album cover conjures up visions of a twin-Strat axe attack of Greek fire and fury - something along the lines of Wishbone Ash's twin screaming diz-busters with their distinctive "V" shaped black Stratocasters - then you may be in for quite a pleasant surprise when you hear Black Strat Band for the first time, with maybe the greatest "Eureka" moment since Archimedes pulled the plug in his bath. This is heavy Blues-Rock that's as cool and laid-back as an ice-cold margarita with a slice of lemon on a sun-kissed Corfu beach whilst reclining in the shade of a beach umbrella. There's no shortage of down and dirty heavy riffing though, so imagine Gary Moore on a Corfu beach with his custom gold Gibson guitar and you'll get the picture. Black Strat is a good solid album of Greek marble with no Achilles Heel, but the real twin highlights of this heavy duty blues-breaking album are the simply sublime "Girl with the Golden Hair" which reaches high up into the stratosphere with music as grand and majestic as the ancient Parthenon in Athens, followed by the anthemic, rabble-rousing grand finale: "Ships of Freedom" which, if you have a vivid enough imagination, brings to mind potent images of Greek galley slaves rising up and breaking free of their chains. They say that absence makes the heart grow fonder and that's certainly the case with the Black Strat Band when they came back with the equally strong "Absence" album two years later. Finally, what do they call a resident of Corfu? ..... A Corfiot. Not a lot of people know that, but you don't need the wisdom of Socrates to know that the Greeks are top dog when it comes to prog.

BORDERLINE SYNDROME Images and Words can't express how heavy this Greek band sounds at times. The Astonishing thing about Borderline Syndrome is they're listed under Eclectic Prog, but with sledgehammer power chords that border on Heavy Metal, especially on their two heaviest numbers, "Innocent and Blue" and the final track, "Descending", which sound like borderline Dream Theater. There's no chance of dreaming your way through this sonic attack either, so better batten down the hatches and secure all loose articles, as this Hellenic quintet are set to raise merry Hell and rattle your crockery. Right from the opening artillery barrage of "In Rainbows", the unrelenting awesome power of this album will leave you wide-eyed and breathless, and with enough latent energy in reserve to wake up the neighbours. This bunker-busting album of heavy construction should come with a hard hat, Doc Marten boots and a high-visibility jacket. The expressive wailing vocalist Sophia Sarri has a unique voice that once heard, you'll never forget, and with the kind of howling banshee vocal range you haven't heard since Siouxsie Sioux first howled and hollered her way into our consciousness. And so, with a thunderous album that's loud enough to Awaken the dead, Borderline Syndrome are set to go the Distance Over Time, especially if you're a fan of Dream Theater. Finally, if you're unlucky enough to suffer from borderline personality syndrome, I can't promise this album will come to your emotional rescue, but it will help to temporarily lift your spirits and give you a nice caffeine boost, without even needing to venture anywhere near Starbucks.

A-Z of Greek Prog
CICCADA Marble halls and Jaws! If you ever happen to find yourself beetling around the back streets of ancient Athens, then you may just run into this fine band of merry minstrels. Ciccada are one of the heaviest Prog-Folk bands you're ever likely to hear this side of the Peloponnesian peninsula. Their third and most recent album to date is a veritable Harvest of great songs, all fully ripened and sun-blessed with Greek goodness and ready for reaping. Harvest is undoubtedly the best of three albums released so far, which occasionally borders on Folk Metal, sounding heavier at times than any album I know of by Jethro Tull or the Strawbs, even though Jethro Tull once won a Grammy Award for best Heavy Metal band, ahead of Metallica! This is evergreen pastoral folk imbued with the peaceful solitude of Greek marble halls, combined with sudden hammerhead shark attacks of hard and heavy rock, sounding something akin to an iron fist wrapped in a velvet glove, the like of which we haven't heard since Gryphon first graced our airwaves. The delightful music of the Ciccada septet is very reminiscent of Mostly Autumn, so if you're a fan of Heather Findlay, Iain Jennings and Bryan Josh & Co, then you'll be in for a real Greek treat here. In ancient folklore, the cicada beetle was a symbol of carefree living and immortality, and so it is with this free-loving band of Greek troubadours, who deserve to be around for many years yet. You'll be pleasantly surprised to hear all of the lyrics are in English too - the international language of prog (and air traffic control). The charming music of Ciccada sounds as quintessentially English as a game of cricket with strawberries and cream on an English summer lawn, with not a bouzouki or Greek lyre to be heard anywhere. You won't be stumped or on a sticky wicket with Ciccada's previous two fine albums either as they're both real belters and well-above batting average. In conclusion then, the sweet and endearing music of Ciccada is as warm and inviting as a Mediterranean Summer Breeze blowing through the jasmine of your mind, but the lovely sun-blessed album we have here is truly a Harvest for the World. And so, the next time you hear a cicada chirping away in the rainforest, maybe it'll bring back fond memories of Greek band Ciccada, or far more likely, the distinctive yell of Tarzan as he swings on a vine through the jungle, Uh- oh, Chongo!

CRYSTAL THOUGHTSTripping the light fantastic! Crystal Thoughts are the most exciting phenomena to occur in the spacetime continuum since cosmologist Carl Sagan first took us on a fantastic voyage of discovery across the Cosmos in his eponymous TV series and book. This incredible album is a cosmic journey of the mind though, only without the psilocybe effect of eating magic mushrooms, and yes, they are indeed toxic, so they're best avoided if you see them growing in your local magical forest. Crystal Thoughts are one of the most obscure and enigmatic outfits ever to emerge from the Greek archipelago, with psychedelic folk music as wide and expansive as one of Demis Roussos' colourful kaftans. Crystal Thoughts only recorded this one outstanding album, and then just as mysteriously disappeared forever and ever into the cosmic aether, elevating the album to instant classic status. Finding this ultra-rare album for sale in your local record store would be almost as amazing as finding the Ark of the Covenant on sale at your local antiques shop. This transcendental treat won't help you escape the surly bonds of Earth, but it may lift your spirits high enough to almost touch the face of the prog gods on Mount Olympus. "Toxic Phenomena in Kosmic Fields" takes us on a magic carpet ride back through time, back to those hazy lazy halcyon days of flowers and beads and butterflies in a psychedelic Garden of Eden, when being gay just meant being happy and carefree. This lovely album has all the glowing warmth of the Mediterranean, combined with the mystery and exoticism of the ancient casbah and with inscrutable song titles as colourful as a florilegium. It's not crystal clear what the final album track "Carovna Pistalka" refers to, but it appears to be a Greek children's fairy tale, and after listening to this beautifully mellow album of spaced-out meditative moods, then maybe you too will believe there are fairies at the bottom of the garden. Then again, maybe not. Either way, this spacey and hypnotic album is as chilled out as a dry vodka Martini, shaken not stirred. "Kosmic Fields" is a good solid album of Grecian alabaster marble and a real diamond gem of psych-folk - and you know what they say about diamonds and longevity.

DAEMONIA NYMPHE Music and moussaka! Daemonia Nymphe (Latin for Demon Nymph) are an ethnic ensemble of players who sound as authentically Greek as an evening of fine dining and plate-smashing at a Greek restaurant. So what's on the menu tonight? This charming band of nymphs serve up appetizing morsels of dulcimers, pandouras, bouzoukis and Greek lyres, all wrapped together in a tasty pita bread of heavenly voices and tribal percussion instruments. This ethnic blend brings to mind delicate Incantations of Mike Oldfield's music, especially on his folklore-influenced fourth album. So if you're in the mood for a Bacchanalian feast of ethnic chanting, combined with the most authentic assemblage of Greek instruments you're ever likely to experience outside of Athens, then prepare for an enjoyable evening of caroling and carousing with the nymphs. They say that the devil has all the best tunes and Daemonia Nymphe are a devilishly fine band. They're the most exotic musical experience since neoclassical darkwave duo Dead Can Dance first twanged our heartstrings, so if you're a fan of Aussie duo Lisa Gerrard and Brendan Perry, then you're surely going to love the sound of Daemonia Nymphe. "Tyrvasia" offers up a veritable feast of charming Greek folk with some of the finest ethnic music of pure beauty you'll ever hear within the realm of a dying sun. And if you're in an adventurous spirit, then you may like to try a marathon-run of all six of Daemonia Nymphe's albums, where you'll find their latest offering "Psychostasia" is the Olympic gold medallist in terms of excellence with performances as polished as Greek marble.

DARNAKES It's written in the stars! This merry band of astrologers are the most authentic Greek experience you'll have since Anthony Quinn first wooed Irene Papas in Zorba the Greek. Darnakes hail from Greece's second city of Thessaloniki, where the days are long and the hot sultry nights are filled with the sound of love and laughter, and if you happen to wander near a local Greek taverna and hear the sound of Balkan balalaikas, then if you venture inside, you may find dancers merrily cavorting and carousing in gaily-coloured skirts, and sometimes the women join in too. Darnakes are just the kind of traditional Greek minstrels you might find performing there, with songs all sung in their native Greek language and all performed on traditional Greek instruments. Darnakes are certainly an orthodox folk band on this first album - although their religion doesn't even come into it - but their second and best album "Libra" opens the book on a far heavier progressive edge to the band. Look out for Darnakes' third and most recent album to date though, which has a sting in the tail.

DEADFILE File under philosophical Post Rock. If you've ignored Greek prog up to now, then that may be the worst decision since Socrates decided to drink the hemlock. Deadfile are from the sun-kissed island of Corfu in northwestern Greece and where, during the hazy lazy days of summer, there's ample time to study your flip-flops on the beach, whilst contemplating the Oneness of Being and Nothingness - as you do. After all, they don't call this kind of thoughtful, reflective music "Shoegazing" for nothing. The haunting, cinematic music of the enigmatically-tilled "Applied Oneironautics" is as creepy and suspense-filled as a Hitchcock thriller where, at any moment, you half-expect a knife-wielding maniac dressed in women's clothes to leap out of the shadows - although it's probably just transvestite comedian Eddie Izzard playing a prank again. Okay, so the music's not as thrilling as Sharon Stone's unforgettable leg-crossing scene in Basic Instinct, but at least no one dies here. Adding to the evocative atmosphere and meditative mood are the delicate tinkling ivories of a classical piano, combined with floating ethereal voices that drift gently in and out of the consciousness like a distant dream. The calm, tranquil atmosphere of this deeply hypnotic album makes it ideal listening for late at night with the lights turned down low, so if you're not fast asleep and dead to the world by the end of this introspective album, then you're either an insomniac, or you drank too much coffee before heading up the stairs to Bedfordshire. All in all then, "Applied Oneironautics" is as studious and thoughtful as a night spent in a Greek temple under the stars, contemplating the meaning of life, love and happiness, or wondering what on earth Level 42 is in The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. Following this auspicious debut, Deadfile released two further equally intriguing albums:- "The City Over the Void" (2014) and "The Oddity of Human Structures" (2019), and it's their third album where Deadfile really comes to life!

YIORGOS FAKANASYes, we have no Fakanas. There are three albums by Giorgos Fakanas listed on ProgArchives:- "Horizon" (1988), "Amorosa" (1991) & "Echoes" (2004), only the last of which is currently available on YouTube. In addition, there are four later Giorgos Fakanas albums, all of which can be found on YouTube, but none of which are listed here on PA, so inevitably "Echoes" is the only one of seven Fakanas albums currently available for review. Confused? Me too! "Echoes" takes us on a jaunty, jazzy journey around the ancient historic regions of Greece, namely:- Thrace; Epirus; Macedonia; Crete; Thessaly, Peloponnese; Sterea Ellada; Aegean; and the Dodecanese - which are presumably islands with twelve sides. There are many sides to Giorgos Fakanas too, with jazzy horns, sassy sax, vibrant vibraphones and delicate piano motifs in abundance, in combination with sweeping classical strings. Fakanas is best-known as a bass player (if he's known at all outside of his native Greece) but the bass playing is very understated here, so you won't hear any heavy storm and thunder bass riffing in the style of Chris Squire, meaning it's probably not going to awaken the passions of the slumbering Greek Prog Gods on Mount Olympus. After all, this is a jazz album - not a prog album. In conclusion then, if a profusion of Jazz Fusion puts you in a land of confusion, then "Echoes" may leave you in a state of disillusion, but on the other hand, if a jazzy infusion is good for your constitution, then this album may be the ideal solution - or is that just circumlocution?

THE FLOW Go with The Flow! A chilled-out band from Greece's third city of Patras, in the far north of the Peloponnesian peninsula. The Flow first streamed into view back in 1999, with their one and only album of spacey, mellow moods having an Incubation period of four years. Their hypnotic music is as chilled out as a daiquiri cocktail on ice with a slice of a lemon on a sun-kissed Mediterranean beach with the waves gently lapping at your feet and with a dog gently lapping at your ice cream. The music is as delicately pleasing as a fragile Grecian urn with the heavily-accented vocalist only adding to the delightful Greek charm of this modern Krautrock classic. "Incubation" features swirling waves of laid-back rhythms gently ebbing and flowing like the tide, together with lashings of cool and breezy psychedelic grooves. And so, if you've ever wanted to sail the Aegean Sea without leaving the comfort of your armchair and you're in the mood for a sun-dazed, psychedelic haze of in-and-out phasing that sounds so amazing, then you'll surely have a pleasant voyage - and don't forget the sunscreen!
