Jon Anderson (born 1944) is one of the most acclaimed singer/songwriters in the progosphere, And You and I know he's the songwriting genius and frontman of YES, having written such epic Wonderous Stories as Tales from Topographic Oceans, despite the album coming Close to the Edge of breaking up the band. Time and a Word has it that Rick Wakeman was driven to The Gates of Delirium during the making of the album and he couldn't wait for the album To Be Over and done with. In fact, the tortured recording process of Topographic Oceans was the reason for all of the members of YES deciding to take a collective break from touring and recording with the band to pursue various solo projects, resulting in Jon Anderson's first solo album, Olias of Sunhillow (1976). Yours is No Disgrace if you haven't yet heard this magnificent masterpiece, but it's still generally regarded as Jon Anderson's best solo album by far. The album tells the story of the inhabitants of a dying planet, where one of them (Olias) decides to Leave It all behind and become a Starship Trooper, embarking on a Tour of the Universe as an Astral Traveller to begin a new life elsewhere, so, in a Roundabout way, it's really a story of Survival, rejuvenation and hope for the future.
Jon Anderson's long career has been one of Perpetual Change, which Parallels the constant Changes of line-up in YES. Jon has worked with some of the biggest names in music, forming a musical Union with Vangelis, as well as recording songs with King Crimson, Mike Oldfield, Tangerine Dream, Roine Stolt, Rick Wakeman, Jean Luc Ponty, Milton Nascimento and Kitaro, and even including a brief stint as a backing singer with Iron Butterfly! Just like the rest of us, Jon has had his personal ups and downs, having been the Owner of a Lonely Heart when he broke up with his wife of 26 years back in 1995. He married his new love Jane in 1997 and they even recorded an album together - The Promise Ring - just before the Turn of the Century. Sadly, Jon's health was in a Fragile state in 2008, which led to his permanent departure from YES - the band he'd formed with Chris Squire back in 1968 - which came as something of a Shock to the System for YES fans. One thing's for sure though, Yesterday and Today, Everyday's a good day when you Awaken to the songs of Jon Anderson, many of which I promise to feature here Soon.

True story - my sister-in-law used to be a hairdresser and used to go to Jon's house to do his first wife's hair. My wife went with her once and was waiting in their hallway once when the great man wandered in and uttered the immortal words "Who are you"?. She had no idea who he was at the time.
Just to be picky, I believe Trevor Rabin wrote Owner of a Lonely Heart.

Yes, he was the main song-writer, but as far as I know Squire, Anderson and Horn helped create the final version of the song.

Thanks for pointing out that Jon Anderson was a co-writer of Owner of a Lonely Heart. I would've fallen off The Ladder in disbelief if it turned out Trevor Rabin was the sole writer of the song.

Olias of Sunhillow - Album Review (originally posted on December 7th, 2019)
JON ANDERSON needs no introduction, but the longstanding frontman of YES deserves an introduction anyway, so here goes..... He was born in Accrington, Lancashire in 1944. Anderson was a member of his brother's band, The Warriors, during the mid-1960's and he joined YES bassist Chris Squire's band, Mabel Greer's Toyshop in 1968. They changed the name of the band to YES later that same year. He was the lead vocalist on all but one of the YES albums from the first self-titled album in 1969, through to the "Magnification" album in 2001. The only exception was the 1980 "Drama" album which featured Trevor Horn on vocal duties. Jon Anderson was also the frontman on the "Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe" album, a YES album in all but name. He had a long-lasting musical partnership with Vangelis, recording four sophisticated albums of Electronica together as Jon & Vangelis:- "Short Stories" (1980); "The Friends of Mr Cairo" (1981); "Private Collection" (1983); & "Page of Life" (1991). He joined with fellow YES member Rick Wakeman in 2010 to record "The Living Tree" album. Jon Anderson's most recent collaboration was the "Better Late Than Never" (2015) album with Roine Stolt of The Flower Kings. This album, "Olias of Sunhillow" (1976), is the first of Jon's fifteen solo albums, with his latest album "1000 Hands: Chapter One", released as recently as 2019. His second album "Song of Seven" (1980) is also in the progressive mould, before he branched out into other avenues of music, such as regular Pop/Rock and New Age albums. "Olias of Sunhillow" is a concept album, recorded at a time when the concept album was King in the weird and wonderful world of Progressive Rock. The album tells the story of an alien race looking for a new world to colonise, following the destruction of their home planet in a volcanic catastrophe. Jon Anderson wrote all of the music and lyrics, and played all of the musical instruments featured on the album, so this really IS a solo album, in the true sense of the word. Let's don the flares, Afghan coat and platform shoes now as we travel back in time to those halcyon Prog-Rock days of the mid 1970's.
The album opens in dramatic style with the the sound of rumbling waves in the instrumental "Ocean Song". We then hear the exotic sound of a synth, which somehow conjures up images of the mystical East with its oriental vibe. This acts as a prelude to "Meeting (Garden Of Geda)", a buoyant and uplifting song that sounds like a more melodic and harmonic version of YES. The lyrics tell a story of a spacecraft embarking on a journey to escape a doomed planet:- "There stands Olias to outward to build a ship, Holding within all hope we retain, The frame will be so built to challenge the universe." ..... This is "YES lite" without the constant changes of tempo, sudden key changes and crashing chords that we've become so accustomed to over the years from classic YESSONGS. The "Olias of Sunhillow" album is still very much in Progressive Rock territory, but it's gentle and melodic Prog-Rock with a New Age oriental feel to it. Our journey across the universe continues now with "Dance Of Raynart, a beautiful instrumental number, featuring the gentle sound of a harp combined with mesmerizing keyboards. This leads us into "Olias (To Build the Moonglade), a passionately uplifting song full of optimism, as the alien colonists begin building their spaceship. Onwards now to the mysteriously titled 7-minute-long, three-piece suite,"Qoquaq n Transic"/"Naon"/"Transic Tö". It's a gorgeous-sounding oriental instumental, opening to the sound of gently melodic swirling synths. This transposes into "Naon", a bright and breezy happy-clappy New Age chant, before returning to the redolent sound of the oriental synth in "Transic To". Our space colonists now embark on their journey across the universe with "Flight of the Moorglade", to close out Side One. This is an ebullient and uplifting song which is positively aglow with optimistic exuberance. Just take a look at these inspiring lyrics:- "The first to venture, First to gain, Exploring daylight, Clearer than the Talloplanic view." ..... No idea what the "Talloplanic view" is, but it sounds good and the joyfully intoxicating music is guaranteed to put you in jubilant mood and high spirits, without the aid of any alcoholic beverages.
We enter "Solid Space" now with the opening of Side Two. We're in full Symphonic Prog mode here with this rousing and restorative piece of music. It's a surging, tympanic and superlative song, bursting with glorious optimism. Okay, that's enough adjectives for now, so onwards we travel through space to "Moon Ra"/"Chords"/"Song of Search". Yes, it's another three-piece suite (no, not two armchairs & a sofa). "Moon Ra" is another New Age chant. If we weren't travelling through space, then this is the kind of jolly and vibrant song you might hear New Age revellers chanting as they dance around a tree (possibly naked) by the light of a silvery moon. This leads us onto "Chords", which, not surprisingly, is a song full of bright and uplifting, reverberating major chords to elevate the spirits up into the stratosphere and beyond. The three-piece suite concludes with "Song of Search", a hauntingly atmospheric piece of instrumental music to transport you to a higher plane of musical existence. This is soothing and sophisticated melodic prog that reaches the places that other prog-rock albums can only aspire to. We drift gently back to Earth now with the closing song on the album, "To the Runner", a joyous and jubilant hymnal melody. The music is all aglow with some positively inspirational and spiritual vibes. If only they played music in church as good as this, it might be enough to turn an atheist into a religious devotee!
You don't HAVE to be a YES fan to enjoy this album, because "Olias of Sunhillow" is a gently melodic and harmonic departure from the sound of YES, but if you ARE a fan of YES, then the familiar sound of Jon Anderson's voice may be enough to inspire you to go out and buy the album. It's still Progressive Rock, but it's Prog-Rock given a New Age oriental twist, in true Jon Anderson style. If I could choose just one word to describe the beautiful music contained within this marvellous album, it's Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!

Jon Anderson in Part 1 of a 2020 interview talks about the making of the classic Close to the Edge album and says the current YES band are good but they're not THAT good, although this interview was recorded before the release of my favourite YES album: The Quest, so he might change his tune now, or maybe not.

The Revealing Science behind the creation of the iconic Tales from Topographic Oceans album in this in-depth YES documentary, which brings back good memories for many of us here, but probably gives Rick Wakeman nightmares.

Wonderful post, this took a great deal of work! Thank you!
I saw Jon at his solo show "Voice of Yes," and recorded his live version of "Flight of the Moorglade" from Olias. This was in 2011, time flies!
I love this particular song, please enjoy!

^ Thanks! Flight of the Moorglade is a great song, which reminds me that Jon played all of the instruments himself on the Olias of Sunhillow (so it truly was a solo album in every sense), which I still haven't managed to buy on CD. I currently only have two Jon Anderson albums on CD: Toltec and The More You Know. The one YES album I'd really love to get hold of is Tales from Topographic Oceans, then I can sail away to dreamland listening to the album late at night.
Undoubtedly, The Yes Album that's been the Big Generator of the most controversy over the years is Tales from Topographic Oceans. YES, it's a long double album with four long Yessongs which was treated like a rotten Tormato by the music press, but if you Open Your Eyes, you'll gain The Keys to Ascension and realise what a classic album this is. The album came Close to the Edge of splitting the band up, when there was a Magnification of tensions within the group with so many Fragile egos at stake. In the ensuing Drama, Time and a Word has it that Rick Wakeman threatened to walk out during the recording of the album. The album climbed The Ladder of success though, topping the UK album charts for two weeks. Rick Wakeman left the band and didn't appear on the following Relayer album. There was Talk of a re-Union, but Heaven & Earth had to be moved to persuade Rick to return for the Going for the One album in 1977. The best-selling YES album of all though, released in 1983, was famously named after its catalogue number, 90125.

Who else but Jon Anderson could make a song about nuclear war sound cheerful?

Not one of the greatest Christmas albums, it has to be said, but still much better than "Shatner Claus: The Christmas Album", although that's no great recommendation.

In Part 9 of the Rock History Music interview, Jon talks about the possibility of getting back together with YES again and also says his album "In the City of the Angels" recorded with Toto was a big hit in Quebec province, Canada, but peculiarly, wasn't a hit anywhere else in the world.

My favorite former member of Pink Floyd. I mean Genesis.
Olias of Sunhillow was my favorite by him. I love the Tony Banks keyboards.

Jon Anderson has sung with more bands than I care to remember, including The Band Geeks, and I love this Yessong, in a Roundabout way.

Hold the Line! We're In the City of Angels for Jon's Toto album, recorded shortly before his move to California. Look out for Chris Squire making a cameo appearance on double bass in the video below.

Jon gives no details of how Bill broke his heart. Bill left because Yes did not challenge him anymore. Bill wanted to expand his musical horizons, to become a better musician and Yes no longer offered that.

I was a bit baffled too and wondered quite how Bill Bruford broke Jon Anderson's heart. I must admit, I've never been a big fan of Bill Bruford's solo albums or his albums with Earthworks, but here he is making a great comeback in his outstanding solo drumming spot with Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe in An Evening of YES Music Plus back in 1989.

Even some of Jon Anderson's YES bandmates have been known to say he's away with the fairies on occasion, but in a nice way.

Angels Embrace is the eighth studio album by storyteller Jon "Christian" Anderson. Love is in the air and Jon is in romantic mood for this calming New Age album, having just met his future wife Jane Luttenberger. The album even comes with a commemorative photo of the happy couple before their nuptials and this album is a real family affair too with Jon's two daughters Deborah and Jade providing additional vocals on two tracks. Jon Anderson is truly away with the angels on this heavenly album, but you'll have to wait until Jon's 1997 album "The Promise Ring" before he's away with the fairies too - although some of Jon's YES bandmates have said he's been away with the fairies for a long long time.

Really effective orchestral arrangements. Some songs sound even better than the original versions.
