This thread is mainly aimed at collectors, and by "great classics" I mean albums that are very high rated by really many people. How old they must be, it's up to oneself to decide. Mine are: Camel - The Snow Goose (1975)
Caravan - In The Land of Grey and Pink (1971) Emersom, Lake & Palmer - Emerson, Lake & Palmer (1970) Emersom, Lake & Palmer - Tarkus (1971) Genesis - Nursery Cryme (1971) Genesis - Selling England by the Pound (1973) Gentle Giant - Acquiring the Taste (1971) Jethro Tull - Aqualung (1971) Khan - Space Shanty (1972) King Crimson - Larks’ Tongues in Aspic (1973)
King Crimson - Red (1974) Mike Oldfield - Ommadawn (1975)
Pink Floyd - The Dark Side of the Moon (1973) Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here (1975) Renaissance - Renaissance (1969) Van der Graaf Generator - H to He Who Am the Only One (1970)
Van der Graaf Generator - Godbluff (1975) Rick Wakeman - The Six Wives of Henry VIII (1973) Yes - The Yes Album (1971)
Yes - Close to the Edge (1972)
Some additional: Emersom, Lake & Palmer - Trilogy (1972) Genesis - Foxtrot (1972) Marillion - Script For A Jester’s Tear (1983) Strawbs - Grave New World (1972)
And I hope, you'll enjoy it!
For anyone who's not familiar with it, I can certainly recommend the book Rocking the Classics. English Progressive Rock and the Counterculture . Oxford University Press 1997 by Edward Macan, which is generally considered to be the very best book written about Progressive Rock so far.

it will confuse people. For some prog classics ended in 1975, others will say '76, and then others '77. I say '79. So there you go.

Yep indeed, I was trying to compile a list based on a consensus and also stuck to one album per band. Haken - The Mountain is the newest album on my list along with BBT - English Electric (One) and IQ - The Road Of Bones. These do seem to garner massive praise and although not my favourite albums by those artists I do like them a lot. We need the modern 'classics' as well the older ones otherwise prog is inevitably a dead thing.

You have a good point there, richardh. On the other hand, it can be argued that status as classics has to be deserved by many years appreciation, so it has to be some old modern albums.

1) Genesis— Trick of the tail 2) Genesis— Selling England By The Pound 3) YES— Fragile 4) Fields Of The Nephilim— The Nephilim 5) Marillion— Clutching At Straws 7) Pink Floyd— Wish You Were Here 8) The Alan Parsons Project— I Robot 9) The Alan Parsons Project— Tales Of Mistery & Imagination 10) King Crimson— ITCOTCK 11) Peter Gabriel— Scratch. PG 3 12) IQ— The Road of Bones 13) IQ— EVER 14) Arena— Songs From The Lions Cage 15 Arena— Pride 16) Threshold— Psychedelicattsen 17) Galahad — Empires Never Last 18) Supertramp— Crime Of The Century 19) IQ— The Seventh House 20) IQ— The Wake

Only one album per artist:
Robert Wyatt - Rock Bottom Gong - You Peter Hammill - The Silent Corner and the Empty Stage Pink Floyd - Meddle King Crimson - Red Soft Machine - Third Van der Graaf Generator - Pawn Hearts Genesis - Nursery Cryme Gentle Giant - Acquiring the Taste Camel - Mirage Kate Bush - The Dreaming Radiohead - Kid A Talk Talk - Laughing Stock Hatfield and the North - The Rotters' Club Jethro Tull - Aqualung Roy Harper - Stormcock Comus - First Utterance Caravan - In the Land of Grey and Pink Steve Hackett - Voyage of the Acolyte We'll Talk About It Later - Nucleus
Trying to stick with the theme, I skipped specific albums that I might have considered for a personal top 20 by "not universally loved/or relatively obscure" bands/artists such as: Curved Air, National Health (as I would choose their debut), Henry Cow (Unrest), Spirogyra, Guapo, Egg, Family, High Tide, East of Eden, Dr. Z, Gnidrolog, ELO... I even went for Aqualung over Benefit, but I probably got some of it wrong. As Yes (Fragile) and Renaissance (Cards) are missing, they're probably at 21 and 22.

My rule, written in the OP, is "by "great classics" I mean albums that are very high rated by really many people", and that is thought as making it possible to include RYM ratings - it's not just "PA great classics", I've had in mind.
This rule is of course not particularly precise, and that is because I've thought, it is fine to leave good possibilities for one's own decisions concerning what to include or not.
About "under appreciated", I'd say that it's a subjective evalution, richardh, and I think that it may be a good question to concider why Wakeman isn't higher rated than it's the case - even he was one of my teenage idols, and maybe your's as well.

I've restricted myself to albums before 1980. Also, I've grouped albums by the same artist together. Thus, the order doesn't fully match my order of preference.
01: Van der Graaf Generator - Pawn Hearts 02: Van der Graaf Generator - H To He, Who Am The Only One 03: Van der Graaf Generator - The Quiet Zone / The Pleasure Dome 04: Van der Graaf Generator - The Least We Can Do Is Wave To Each Other
05: Peter Hammill - pH7
06: Yes - Close To The Edge 07: Yes - Fragile
08: Bill Bruford - Bruford: One Of A Kind
09: Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Tarkus 10: Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Brain Salad Surgery
11: Hawkwind - Warrior On The Edge Of Time
12: Nektar - Journey To The Centre Of The Eye
13: Supertramp - Crime Of The Century
14: Jethro Tull - Thick As A Brick
15: Genesis - Nursery Cryme 16: Genesis - Foxtrot
17: Pink Floyd - Animals 18: Pink Floyd - The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn
19: The Alan Parsons Project - I Robot
20: Camel - Mirage

I can tell you, Nogbad, that I keep on working but it's certainly a challenge - even not as much as the big Western culture. I'm yet far from to decide whether I want to do this album a part of my rather small, exclusive collection, but it would be a very good supplement to my other RIO/Avant and Zeuhl albums.

I certainly don't understand, what you're talking about. I've been very active, yes, but "my" threads have been based on what I find interesting, and what I've presumed that other active members would find interesting. My presumptions have certainly proved to be right ones, as "my" threads have shown to get many replies and really many views, as well as thanks and other kind of appreciation - I've got good relationship to quite a lot of people, too. Besides that, I've been thinking much about appreciating Progressive Rock, and trying to contribute to the wellness of this genre.
When all that is said, I must tell that I find your post here being mildly speaking rude, and this is certainly not what I've seen on PA before.

I like Rednight's taste in music. I don't see even one album on his list that I wouldn't consider a classic prog album. I love them all. |
And you have passion for Gentle Giant in common, while I won't forget his telling me: "stick to your guns, David".

This thread has got really many views even considering the fact that it's one of "mine" (imho), and it might be that somebody gets a reputation as notorious while I think, it would be appropriate with an apology - or what do you think, Cristi?

I apologized to you twice already in PMs, for accidentally hurting your feelings. But then again you get very easily upset. So if you did not forgive me yet, I give up. Also mentioning me out of the blue, here () is a personal attack.
I do not know what I have to apologize for, having a different opinion than you in some context?
Do you want to find a solution to our misunderstanding in a private message, or do you want it here in the open forum? I could do it either way, but be ready for any results that will come out of that.
I think you owe me an apology as well. If you don't know why, I could remind you. Do you want me to remind you here or in a PM?

Oh, you're still not over that? It was just an observation. Rednight was rude to Paul and you were rude to Rednight. It's just stating the facts.
