It is Monday in Turkey now!!!

Let fun be victorious! The "good vs. evil" thing is boring, don't you think?

Or,

You can partake in casting your votes for the good or evil! The classical is always alluring, or bewitching!

You are free to be as creative as you like, as long as your nominated song makes sense. The theme is "magic", but you can also take magic figuratively. Like in a love song where someone puts a spell on another.

As the DM (Dungeon Magician), I have some rules here. Here they are:

1-) Nominate a single song that cannot be found in PA's database for the competition, and SHARE IT IN YOUR ORIGINAL (first) POST WITH EXPLAINING THAT, like "My nomination is 'X'." You don't have to hurry for determining your ultimate and single nomination. You can always edit your original post, until the voting begins. You may add songs that are out of the competition, but be sensible. Don't share too many songs. Also, your nomination aside, you can share "Prog Archived" songs too. Don't lie to me! You're too eager to share Focus - Hocus Pocus here. Too ravenous to eat the Hamburger Concerto, aren't you?

2-) When the voting begins, we'll do what we usually do: picking 3 favourites and voting for them. Please do not vote for your own nomination.

3-) Anyone can participare, and even if one does not join the competition, s/he can still vote for his/her favourites when I declare that we can begin voting.

4-) If a noob votes before the voting begins, we'll cast all our deadly spells on him/her. Or I have a better idea... We'll combine our magic to cast a spell that will swap his/her mind with Donald Trump's. If any of the participants has a better idea, it can be considered instead. I cannot think of a better punishment/curse as of now.

Have fun!

Here's my nomination, a dark song. You know, I'm "true neutral". So I'm also cool with the dark powers!

Erang - The Temple of Elemental Evil

Alaska - The Sorcerer:

Here's a song for Greg (Logan). I figure he'll surprisedly enjoy seeing Christopher Lee in a fantastical song, if he hasn't already:

Rhapsody of Fire - The Magic of the Wizard's Dream

And a bonus. The singer here is me:

Knightmare - The Enchantress

Edited for nomination:

Nomination will be "House By The Sea," by Iron & Wine

Spun three times around, clicked my heels, uttered an appropriate incantation, and that one appeared to me in a vision.

Original Post:
I don't yet know what my nomination will be, but magic can sometimes take a bit of time.  The magical number 3 I will offer up to thee, however.  Lots of magic etc in common songs, I'm going for a bit more obscurity (as I try to, generally) and sort of approaching obliquely.  These three are more about the practice of magic and enchantment.  Two are for the darker side of things, one for the lighter.  I will start with the light.

The Waterboys with "A Pagan Place"

Country Joe & The Fish "Not So Sweet Martha Lorraine"

Iron & Wine "House By The Sea"

My nomination is:

Modena City Ramblers: Radio Tindouf

This song is set in Algeria, the country where Radio Tindouf broadcasts. In appearance it is a war song, but everything is transfigured through an evocative narrative, where the news arrives with an aura of mystery, and where there are men who dream of landscapes never seen before, like an oasis in the desert, and for this reason I believe that this song can somehow start from reality to overflow into magic.

Out of  competition:

----Francesco Guccini: Il vecchio e il Bambino.

In this song an old man takes a child by the hand and looking at the Po Valley, now urbanized and industrialized, describes to him what it was like when there was a peasant world. Finally, the Child asks him to tell another fable ...

----Lou Reed: Magic and Loss

I love this song by Lou Reed.

Don't share too many songs.
Haha, you're asking addicts to "please drink responsibly".

I probably will restrict myself this time as trying to avoid artists that I had nominated before becomes more difficult by the poll. There is one super-marvellous song "Witches" that a Kate Bush fan and talented musician acquaintance of mine (unfortunately I don't have contact to the guy anymore so I can't ask him to put it on youtube) did about 1990, which I got on a tape at the time and I may be the only person in the world who has it in digital form...  won't work here I'm afraid.

So I go for the German heavy folk band Subway to Sally who do some magical themes.

If you don't know who Mick Karn is, he was bassist for the band Japan which also included Richard Barbieri from Porcupine Tree.  The song that I am posting is going to be my final nomination because it is going to be hard to find a song that I would nominate above this one.  On this track you can hear just how great of a bassist Karn was, though unfortunately, he has passed away mostly underrated.  Another plus for this track is that Steven Wilson also guests on guitar.

Here is my nomination:  Mick Karn - Plaster the Magic Tongue

The other two examples I'm posting here are listed in the Archives, so they don't count.  However, I thought they should be a part of this excellent theme.  I know most participants in these polls usually don't get a chance to listen to the alternative posts, so I'm putting them here for those that have a few minutes to try them out.

Blue Oyster Cult has always been one of my favorite bands and "Imaginos" is one of their best albums and probably the most prog-oriented.  This track comes from that album...

Blue Oyster Cult - Les Invisibles

And finally another great band from the Archives that tends to be overlooked a bit overall, but is quite appreciated in the site...

Ulver - Magic Hollow

Ha, I had that Mick Karn on my list, too. Great stuff! I somehow got distracted and went therefore for Subway to Sally.

But here's something really sensational. In my earlier post I wrote about a Witches song of 1990 that I got on a tape. Nobody knows this and I mean NOBODY. (OK, almost nobody. Maybe some 20 people.)
Now what happens is that I found a 10 years old email address of the guy on the web, and incredibly he answered within minutes, sent his own digitised version and authorised me to put it on my youtube channel.
So here we are. Now how good is this? I feel like some magic has happened. As much as I like Subway to Sally, I think this has to be my nomination.

@Shadowyzard: Of yours I clearly like the Erang one most.
@JD: Unfortunately I like the other two more than I Mother Earth (always reliably great Mr Jackson), but that is the only one that I don't know.
@The Anders: Gasolin, hmmhmm, not really my cup of tea.
@Progishness: Very fitting and nice choice by Stevie Wonder, but I know it already. I'd prefer Michele O'Malley to Carolyn Hester, even though there's something to a lady who sings "I'm Magic Man". Both not bad for sure.

First listen thoughts, Page One:

Shadowyzard:  Alaska “The Sorcerer” Begins with guitars and an almost folkish voiced male singer, in what will obviously become a story/song.  There’s a bit of an 80’s feel to the keys in it, but also a nod to prog with the keyboards being such an integral part of the song.  This sorcerer is indeed likely to help you if you’re down, but you’ll pay a price.  Great start to the poll!  Erang “The Temple of Elemental Evil”  A more symphonic piece (part of a video game or?).  I like the feeling of despair in the initial keyboard part.  There is an operatic voice that enters.   Some slightly discordant elements that enter in, and some plucked-sounding cello or perhaps done on keyboards.  And shimmery-distant horns, I think via synth.  This is a gorgeous piece.  Rhapsody of Fire “The Magic of the Wizard’s Dream”  Another minor key piece with piano and flute at the beginning and a very quavery male vocalist, then Christopher Lee joins in, with a very contrasting, deep vocal.  There is a full chorus and orchestra.  Very nice and full of drama, this one.  Knightmare “The Enchantress”  Metally beginning, lots of wailing doubled guitar and kicks into gear with capable, dramatic vocals and pounding drums.  Some changes keep the song interesting, structure is standard hard rock.

Anders:  Gasolin’ “Legenden om Josha og Ming”  Edgy, pointed guitar, bass and percussion are joined by a wah wah guitar (kindly pointed out to me by Anders, again, thank you Smile).  A vehement sounding male vocalist.  Story of an ancient meeting with a modern, really, kind of a magical clash of cultures.  Very catchy, with full choruses and washy keyboards.  A string section comes in, which really sweetens this up, in a very good way.  Making me think a little of a wonkier “Madman Across The Water,” string section.

JD:  Mike Batt “Tarota”  Guessing this will be about Tarot (as we would say in English).  Meandering electric guitar begins this piece ( was expecting mandolin or balalaika from the cover).  I’m thinking this is an overture?  Interspersed with full orchestra, very engaging.  This is certainly something I missed along the way and I am going to acquaint myself with the rest.  I Mother Earth “Levitate”  Heaviness enters the fray with a sneering vocalist and smashing, crashing drums, bass and guitar.  Personally, I like the subtlety of the previous piece better, although I like the part in the center with the solos going from one sort to another.  Joe Jackson “The Evil Eye”  This is very snappy, poppy, in that Joe Jackson way.  Enjoyable foray into voodoo and the like, yet living in modern times.

Progishness:  Stevie Wonder “If It’s Magic”  Lovely harp begins this song and Stevie’s wonderful voice accompanies it.  I’ve enjoyed his live perfomances many times, back in the 70’s, he opened for tons of shows I attended.  What a beautiful duet, I could have done without the harmonica at the end, though.  Carolyn Hester Coalition “I’m Magic Man”  Here we have some 60’s pop/psych with slightly muddy recording and a strident female vocalist. Lots of echo-y guitar.  Michele O’Malley “Song to the Magic Frog”  Begins as a folky/psych/pop ballad, with harpsichord and a sweet-voiced vocalist, has almost a tinge of country-ish-ness in her voice.  She’s quite a capable vocalist, in this very delicate setting.  Surprised that I’ve not heard it before.

Kees:  Nena “Zaubertrick”  The always-recognizable Nena here, doing some magic, 80’s style.  Poppy and bright, with punchy and keys going from shimmery to polka-dotty and back.  Some whangy bass and those electronic drums keep the beat and at he end, she has a wicked little laugh.  Les Rita Mitsouko “La sorcière et l'inquisiteur”  Live performance here, love the start with an eerie vocal and keyboards to match, setting the tone.  This one has a bit of the feel of an Oriental orchestra, but with a sort of operatic vocal.  Love the lyrics and that the witch enchanted her would-be torturer.  Very dramatic performance.  Catherine Ringer & Iggy Pop “I Put A Spell On You”  I, too, did think of the Screamin’ Jay Hawkins tune.  Given the full treatment in a live setting, what great fun this is as a duet.  It looked to me as though she had heterochromia, from the first video you showed, interesting that Iggy would work with another artist with these different coloured eyes.

George:  The Budos Band “Magus Mountain”  Begins with electric guitar picking out a melody, moving quickly into a sort of electrified semi-Renaissance period sound, which shifts into a jazzy piece with ornate organ and a horn section.  It drifts into an experimental jam, then back to the horns, then back to the main theme.  Really intriguing combination.  Triumph “Magic Power”  Here the song starts with some synth and guitar and then a very capable arena rock voice.  Well-crafted rock song, everyone does their part very well, with a fun video to boot.  Blind Melon “Three Is A Magic Number”  How fun!  Begins with soft piano and the scratchy voice of Shannon Hoon (sadly the only person ever to die on one of our buses.  Overdosed for those who don’t know/remember).  Nice little flute flutters by near the end.  There was a naivete to this band that was very engaging.  Never knew they did this.

Saperlipopette!  The Unseen “Evidently the Spirits Have Taken Over” Begins with some spooky slightly uneven sounding keyboards and eerie vibes (?) or perhaps a keyboard sound.  Very cinematic/atmospheric piece.   It has a feeling of foreboding and the sound is like you’re hearing it while walking down into a hallway, where the music is coming from another room.  A female voice speaks and is very garbled, to eerie affect.  It becomes kind of dirgelike with the female repeating unintelligible words.  Then goes into an almost childlike/circus part before the end.  Spooky stuff!  Toadstone “Circle of Stones”  Another eerie track, with flutes and keyboards.  Guitar joins in as the song progresses, with string strikes.  The vocals are male and female, blended, very dark folk here.

Lorenzo:  Hope you are getting close to complete healing, Lorenzo!  Surprised you didn’t bring Donovan here (maybe someone else will).  He does, after all, have a most-perfect song for this theme.  Modena City Ramblers “Radio Tindouf”  Has a middle eastern-y beat to the song, with flutes and eerie strings, also played in a sort of middle eastern-y way.  Added is an accordion to the strident vocals.  The percussion is organic.  Really intriguing combination of styles, I quite like this one.  Francesco Guccini “Il Vecchio e il Bambino”  (went ahead and listened to what I could find) Begins with a lovely violin and strummed guitar.  In “the Italian style,” as I call it.  Very emotional, and soaring.  What a sad thing to think of ancient times as just fable, and not, as it truly is, history.  Lou Reed “Magic and Loss”  Simple piano and bass strike a few notes, then, with Lou’s vocal, drums.  Simple and effective, as most of his music is.  Definitely a feeling of sadness in it, and hopelessness.  The guitar lead about halfway in is very evocative of the general tone of the piece.

Christian:  Subway To Sally “Liebeszauber”  This has a heavy dark folk feel at the start, with what sounds like handclaps, heavy drums, flutes and guitars in a marching beat.  Strident male vocalist with grouped chorus.  Reedy, wrangly keyboards enter the fray about 2/3rds in. This is the more metal-ish side of what I enjoy by bands such as Faun or Corvus Corax, but sounds like all modern instruments.  Subway To Sally again with “Die Hexe”  This one is a capella vocals, in the style of what I think of as  “village song,” in the intro.  Wastes no time into jumping on in to a full rock style with electric instruments and flute.  Music stops as vocalist sings lines and punctuates with coming back in after the first verse, then backs the vocalist in full again.  Medieval break section, then back full force, with a wailing guitar solo to boot.  Ends up with some quiet keyboard/organ notes.  I quite enjoyed both of these.  FM Einheit “Hymne”  Evil female cackles and some buzzing/washy guitars and thonky/thuddy drums start this.  The vocals are back far in the mix, that come more to the fore, with unintelligibility.   Sort of a spooky space piece. It all ends quite abruptly.

Mike:  Mick Karn “Plaster the Magic Tongue”  Begins with keys and horns syncopatedly sounding a bit carnivalesque.  Complex percussion, punchy bass and guitars enter the picture.  Group vocals back the lead singer.  Flutes section commences, definitely with a calliope feel, but not exactly a childish ride. Also makes me think of a medieval circus parade.   Blue Oyster Cult “Les Invisibles”  Love the photo, looks like The Cliff House, outside of San Francisco, which fits, I’ve always thought BOC owed a bit to psychedelia.  Heavy beginning with sharp electric guitar, bass and percussion.  Vocals are soaring and layered, music complex.  Very enjoyable, I’d not heard this recording.  Ulver “Magic Hollow”  Wind sounds at beginning, with bell-like keys and an ominous deep something sound.  Watery/layered vocals here, and a light yet also dark musicality to the song.  There is a hint of psych and melancholy, too.  I quite like this, will check them out further.

Actually I don't think there are any keyboards in the Gasolin' song, except perhaps in the chorus. The verse consists of a groove with bass, drums and two guitars, one repeating a melodic figure and one with some wah-wah effects in the other channel. In the instrumental section there is a string arrangement added to the groove and a rather spacey guitar solo (I wonder if it was inspired by "Space Oddity").

I re-listened and realized the effect I was hearing on the wah wah guitar was what I perceived to be a keyboard.  I will adjust my original breakdown to amend this.  Thank you for pointing it out, these days I do sometimes have trouble distinguishing something done on a keyboard or guitar, with all of the various effects available.

@suitkees: Always happy to see your Nena fandom; I loved that album but as mentioned before it was pretty much played to death at the time. I like the Les Rita Mitsouko track a lot. I put a spell on you is of course iconic.
@George: I prefer The Budos Band by some distance; I'm probably too dark a character for the Triumph singer's super positive rendition.
@Nicky: As you probably expect (?), I like Iron & Wine clearly the best, great arrangement! Country Joe & The Fish is nice but not really my style of music, and the Waterboys have always somehow passed me by (also I know this).
@Saperlipopette: As much fun as The Unseen track is, the Toadstone one has a more direct appeal to me.

First listens thus far on Page 2 and an addition:

Christian:  HyCo “Witches”  Begins with some percussion, bell sorts of sounds and very wriggly, watery guitar.  Deep voiced male vocalist, there is a very sinister sound to this piece, but also a sort of glorious feel to it.  There are some deep “ahhhhh,” sorts of sounds, as the song progresses.  Vocals are swirling and intertwined at times.  Definitely chill-inducing, in a good way.

Cristi:  Bloodrock “Magic Man”  I recall the band name, but don’t think I’ve ever heard them.  Contemplative electric piano beginning, then the band kicks in, kind of a bluesy start to the song.  Definitely blues/hard/rock of the 70’s here.  Organ and guitar solos during the song.  A pleasant visit back to the 70’s.

dr wu23:  Oh good!  Someone DID bring the most perfect song to the party.  😊  Donovan’s “Season of the Witch,” great, great favourite of mine.  I hope that it is new to some around here.  Steppenwolf’s “Magic Carpet Ride,” as you probably know, I am also very familiar with, more excellent songcrafting.  And I already told you I got a kick out of The Searchers, with “Love Potion No. 9.”  Sigh, all great songs from my youth.  😊

Okay...

We will begin voting after about 24 hours (30 hours max).

Please ascertain your ultimate nomination, and like I explained in my original post, notify which one is your nominated song till then.

You (you know who you are, but I don't know you yet) can still participate. BTW, you (we) don't have to listen to and analyze all the songs shared here, like Snicolette did a little above. You can listen to only the nominated songs (1 song per participant). And then just vote. That will suffice.

I'll put the nominations in the poll options, and then drop a note here, so we can begin voting. I guess the voting process will last till next Sunday evening/night. So lots of time to listen to the songs and decide which 3 songs to vote for.

Yes, absolutely, analysis is NOT a requirement.
I know I still need to decide which one is my nomination and am just having a hard time of it, this round.  Still mulling.

So I have to decide, do I pick the song I like the best, or do I pick the one that I think others will like the best. Hmmm, it is a pickle.

My nomination goes to...

I Mother Earth - Levitate

^ Well, nice and all but I made it very clear that we all have to notify this in our original posts. This is because, sometimes people share songs in 4-5 different posts and comments like yours above can be hard to notice. Plus, one says his/her nomination is this/that in his original post, another does like you. Ultimate chaos! Anyway, this happens to all of us, I think. I'll take notes instead. Do however you like.

I'm supposed to edit my original post by deleting the videos I don't want and only leave the one I do?
And you'll do the rest being the all magical wizard you purport to be? What if I have a bad aura that day? Would that taint my mojo enough to be rendered invisible to the masses?

No! Just add a note by editing, like "This is my nomination:" upon your nominated song/video. You don't have to delete anything! If one's nominated song is not in his original post, s/he adds the note and the video. No need to delete anything!

Don't worry. I'll not punish anybody for not doing that! LOLWink

@Lorenzo: I had heard the Modena City Ramblers before but I like this more than what I already know. Nice use of folk elements. I had bought the Guccini album when you brought him up last time. It seems Italy has changed a lot in the last 50-100 years probably more than most other European countries? Lou Reed is also quality stuff, no decision support here...
@George: Nice to see that magic number 3 thing, not necessarily voting material but great use of an out of competition entry.
@Mike: I'm a proper Mick Karn fan and love that one, but know it of course. The BOc one doesn't do much for me, I hadn't heard Ulver and this is very nice and moody, but not sure if this can count as it's on PA.
@Cristi: I'm not a fan of all too straight rock music, but this is surely played with lots of feeling.
@Dr Wu: The Searchers one is fun but I know it already. I like Donovan a bit more than Steppenwolf but there isn't much between them.

Joan Baez was the second concert I attended, at $2.50 a seat, believe it or not, in those days she didn't charge any more than that.

I'd not heard this, but did recognize immediately the orchestral style by Peter Schickele, who used the pseudonym P.D.Q. Bach.  He used to have a show on public radio that was quite interesting.

Thank you, I might like to further investigate this album, as there is a lot of material on it of interest.Smile

One of my bonus songs is Three Is A Magic Number. It's a cover and from a series of cartoons I watched as a child growing up in the 70s. It's also very American so I am wondering how many of you in this thread know about it.

Description from Wikipedia:

Quote Schoolhouse Rock! is an American interstitial programming series of animated musical educational short films (and later, videos) that aired during the Saturday morning children's programming block on the U.S. television network ABC. The themes covered included grammar, science, economics, history, mathematics, and civics. The series' original run lasted from 1973 to 1984; it was later revived with both old and new episodes airing from 1993 to 1996.

It was during the 90s revival that a cover album by various rock artists was recorded and released. The Blind Melon cover version was the best in my opinion. I think any child who watched TV in the 70s in the US has Schoolhouse Rock! firmly ingrained in his or her psyche.

Here's the original.

And a bit more on it's development.

Quote The series was the idea of David McCall, an advertising executive of McCaffrey and McCall, who noticed his young son was struggling with learning multiplication tables, despite being able to memorize the lyrics of many Rolling Stones songs. McCall hired musician Bob Dorough to write a song that would teach multiplication, which became "Three Is a Magic Number."

I certainly remember the series, although I was too old for it when it came out.  We all thought it was great, though, for kids.

Haven't been able to listen to anything yet - I was mostly locked up in an editing room this last week - but I will try to catch up. My nomination is mentioned in my first post and doesn't change...

Actually, I have to confess something, but sssht... don't tell anyone else. This is the only Nena album I have - and I really like it! - and I know some of her later hits, but that 's it. So, if my pretended enthusiasm should be a defining principle for "fandom", I guess Nena would be very disappointed - and she doesn't deserve that. But since you were also thinking of this song, this shows how much of an "impact" she has had on our youth... Wink

Thanks for your assessment, Nickie, always a pleasure to read! Just regarding Catherine Ringer's eyes: she uses lenses to create those effects, but in reality she just has two similar brown eyes (shows how serious she is in approaching her performances... She really is a true stage performer/artist, and a brilliant singer, imo...).

First batch:

Erang - The Temple of Elemental Evil (Shadowyzard)
It starts with a string arrangement after which a classical sounding singing voice comes in (which is rather low in the mix). A harp (?) enters the sound along with some woodwind instruments, and the track ends abruptly. Overall very gloomy, and to be honest it is not so much my taste.

I Mother Earth - Levitate (JD)
We enter a more rocky area here, and judging by the sound it's from sometime in the 1990's with grungy vocals and heavy guitar riffs. Later in the song we get some guitar duets with a hint at metal. At other times the singing is almost rap-like, leading my thoughts to RATM. It's the sort of music a lot of the lads listened to when I was at boarding school in the late 90's. It's not a type of music that really appeals to me, but I don't dislike it.

Michele O'Malley - Song to the Magic Frog (Progishness)
This one is more folkish. Interesting with the melodic emphasis on the sharp 7th on "ever know", as well as with the clavichord (I think) in the left channel.

Les Rita Mitsouko - La sorcière et l'inquisiteur (suitkees)
And now for something completely different. This one has a Mediterranean flavour, especially with regards to the melody and the vocal style. Very dynamic performance by the singer too as she illustrates the things the witch is going through under the torture of the inquisitor. I like it a lot. Possible contender.

The Budos Band - Magus Mountain (mathman0806)
Begins with an edgy guitar, but it quickly turns into a more soul-like groove with Motown-like bass and drums, keyboards and a sharp brass riff. There's an almost aggressive trumpet solo at some point. Around 3:30 there's a minor break after which the "tutti" part comes in again. I like this one too, and it's another contender.

Iron & Wine - House By The Sea (Snicolette)
Starts with some percussion instruments and marimbas (?), then enter acoustic and electric guitars along with some folkish vocals. Rather quirky atmosphere overall, and the sound reminds me a bit of an Australian music project called Clue to Kalo. Strong contender for my part. Great track!

In Turkey, we have some extremely serious issues in and around these days. The most prominent one of them is wildfires. I'll not give details, and I'm mentioning this for pointing out that my main focus is that at the moment.

I'll listen to the nominations and vote before Monday, though. Even if I'm not in the mood for having fun nowadays, I'm not personally/directly affected by these conditions.

^ Good to hear that you're not directly affected by these fires, but I can understand the unease. Here at the Western Mediterranean, we haven't had those exceptional temperatures yet and the fires remain relatively small, but I hear almost daily the fire fighting planes circling above my head (they take in water on a lake nearby), and a couple of years ago a fire was stopped at 150m from my house...

Fires are terribly concerning and scary.  I have several friends who lost everything in the Camp Fire (Paradise, CA) a few years ago, and they are still waiting for assistance (between FEMA and the fund that was set up for PG&E as recompense for losses due to their willful neglect of their equipment, which caused those fires).  We also were ready to evacuate last Sept due to fires, just over the ridge from us and are facing another terribly dry year in an area known for raining a lot.

May you continue to stay safe, and hopefully the fires will be put out soon.

Sincerest thanks to you all. Heart

There appeared an incredibly nightmarish possibility of 1 million tons of brown coals catching fire in a fossil fuel plant, and the city just south of us will be smoke poisoned to death if the wind carries the smoke towards them. ALL OF THEM MIGHT DIE! This was a GREAT possibility, not a slight one. And we planned to go to Ankara, which is and will be safe from these fires. Imagine it! Even if Muğla and the nearing cities are evacuated, not everybody has a second house! What would those people do?

Countless animals, plants died and are dying; together with numerous people. I'm ineffably sorry...

Finally had some time to listen to the suggestions, so here some feedback (with a special focus on the nominated songs):

Shadowyzard: Erang's Temple of Elemental Evil sounds like an intro or interlude from a bigger whole. It lays down a great atmosphere, but to me it is lacking development (which is probably compensated by the rest of the album?). It still is my preferred one of the other two choices that sound much too formulaic to me. My compliments regarding your singing on The Enchantress! Really good, but you know by now that this is not my kind of music.

Anders: Gasoline's Legenden om Josha og Ming lays down a very nice bluesy foundation for the rest of the music and although it sounds quite straight rock overall it is much richer than that - good listen.

JD: Levitate by I Mother Earth, a very energetic song, great playing. And although I dislike the djent thing it is fortunately not accompanied by the "need-for-speed" double bass drum that is imo part of the metal clichés; here is a "normal" drummer (and a good one too!). It is not completely enchanting me, but I prefer this one over the Mike Batt song you put up, which has too much of a patchwork feeling to me. I know the Joe Jackson song (great) so it is good you chose to nominate I Mother Earth.

Progishness: Michele O'Malley's Song to the Magic Frog is a nice surprise: a wonderfully sung dreamy pop song, drenched in psychedelia. Great melodies and a nice melancholic stance... The right choice compared to the other two, which are nice, but not as convincing as this one.

Mathman: Another gread discovery with The Budos Band: a slow almost psychy intro before laying down the groove for the rest of the song that is very much enriched by the brass section. Creating some interesting tensions within the song... Very nice.  I remember Triumph from the 80s when they had some (minor?) hits and airplay; great to hear them again.

Snicolette: Ah, The Waterboys, long time no hear... Great to listen to this one - didn't remember them this way. Country Joe and the Fish is nice to hear too, but a bit more conventional late 60s(?) psychedelic music. Your nomination Iron & Wine is also my preferred one: more richness in the music, sonically speaking, more subtlety in the playing, more originality. Great song!

Saperlipopette: I very much like both of your suggestions: the folky Toadstone made me imagine myself being at Stonehenge, observing some rituals going on. At the same time it has something very modern sounding over it. But my preferred one is indeed your nomination, The Unseen. This one makes me think of Yann Tiersen: very atmospheric and sonically rich, wandering between a very dark ambience and a more comforting musical box type of sound, including loops and cheesy synths. Very cinematic indeed. Great discovery!

jamesbaldwin: I like the Modena City Ramblers' song (it is that they sing in Italian, otherwise you would thinkg they're an Irish-American band...) but it leaves me somehow underwhelmed - it remains a bit too much on a similar level -, especially when compared to Francesco Guccini's song, which conveys much more emotion and, imo, has simple a greater songwriting quality.

Lewian: I'm glad you changed your nomination... Although it is nice to hear the Subway to Sally songs, this kind of trad metal/heavy folk just doesn't stick long with me. HyCo on the otherhand is a good surprise. Upon a first listen I though that his singing was a bit weak, but upon a second listen it goes very well with the music: an intriguing New Wave influenced atmospheric song. I really like it.

TCat: Mick Karn with Plaster the Magic Tongue, great choice! Very much similar sounding to the Polytown album that I have and like very much (the collaboration between Mick Karn, David Torn and Terry Bozzio) and it sounds like David Torn is on here again. This is really up my ally! BÖC is nice but a bit too "straightforward" sounding to me, and Ulver is nice to hear too (great atmosphere), but cannot compete with Karn.

Cristi: Magic Man by Bloodrock brings a nice subdued jazzy rock song, typical early 70s sound. It has every thing we can expect: a nice groove, a great voice, modest but at the same time very present keys and the obligatory guitar. Strangely we expect more power from them, the song is not going where I might expect them to go but keeps lingering in a similar mood. Very nice listen, though.

Dr wu23: Three classic artists. The Donovan song is a very good listen, as are the Steppenwolf song and the Searchers songs, but somehow they're not having the same impact as some of the other songs posted here. Maybe too much 60s flavoured? Nice to listen to, but I'm not overwhelmed. Maybe I prefer the Steppenwolf track from these three...

Here are my votes, again, wonderful choices from all, but it must be narrowed down.  Thank you Shadowyzard for the theme, especially considering you've been under a bit of stress from those fires.  May they soon end.  Thanks also to George for the playlist and to Lorenzo for the creation of these polls.

Additional thanks to those who found time to comment, that is actually my favourite part and what sets these polls apart.  Not an absolute must to participate that way, but I find it edifying to understand how others approach the selected materials.

Special Mention to dr wu23 for 3 great songs of my youth: Donovan’s “Season of the Witch,” Steppenwolf’s “Magic Carpet Ride,” and  The Searchers, with “Love Potion No. 9.”

And to Christian for all of his selections being amongst my potential contenders.

1.     Christian:  HyCo “Witches”  This one stayed with me and vied with Shadowyzard's more orchestral offering.  Begins with some percussion, bell sorts of sounds and very wriggly, watery guitar.

2.        ShadowyzardErang  "The Temple of Elemental Evil"  Really fought for 1st, decided to go with a less conventional (for me) option this time.  I would love to hear more of it.  A more symphonic piece (part of a video game or?).

3.       Saperlipopette!  All three of these were way up there for me.  This one was decidedly to eeriest.  The Unseen “Evidently the Spirits Have Taken Over” (The Blackheath Tapes)Click on Music, then find the piece on the recording of Begins with some spooky slightly uneven sounding keyboards and eerie vibes (?) or perhaps a keyboard sound.

Honourable Mentions:

Kees:  Les Rita Mitsouko “La sorcière et l'inquisiteur”

Anders:  Gasolin’ “Legenden om Josha og Ming”

Progishness:  Michele O’Malley “Song to the Magic Frog”

Lorenzo:  Modena City Ramblers “Radio Tindouf”

If They'd Chosen (would also have been vying with my top choices):

Christian:  Subway To Sally “Liebeszauber”  and Subway To Sally again with “Die Hexe”

Progishness: Stevie Wonder “If It’s Magic”

JD:  Mike Batt “Tarota”

MikeUlver “Magic Hollow”

My mini reviews and my podium:

1) Shadowyzard - Evocative instrumental piece, synthetic keyboard sounds accompanied by infernal voices in the background. Nice atmosphere but the piece is underdeveloped, it is probably a piece of a puzzle that must be seen as a whole. Honorable mention.

2) The Anders - Syncopated hard rock piece with power rock sound, which tends to saturation, very pumped arrangement and with some originality. Still, very enjoyable. A guilty pleasure. An anomalous piece among those launched by The Anders. Honorable mention, vying for the best guilty pleasure with con ... see below.

 3) JD - Heavy metal piece, nice, but it's not my cup of tea.

4) Progishness - melodic pop song, which guesses the right and catchy chorus. The singer's voice does it all.

5) Suitkees - piece sung in French, with oriental violins, melodic, pumped, worthy of The Mission (I imagine Hussey's cavernous voice instead of that of the female singer). The piece is really shameless, it presses a lot with the arrangement and the voice on the cadence of the rhythm, it is almost bombastic, it transforms the oriental (very good) melody into an unbridled atmosphere, almost kitsch. A real guilty pleasure. But sometimes I like pieces that don't go thin. Competing with The Anders piece for the best guilty pleasure award.

6) mathman0806 - prog style instrumental piece, a fiatistic blues with many jazz digressions and an enviable progression. Alternate bombastic moments with other refined ones. Bronze medal.

7) Nickie - delicate song, without percussion, based on artificial sounds that act as a rhythm and evocative doubled voices. Very typical of Nickie. Very original sound, great atmosphere, just missing more pathos to make it a masterpiece. Silver medal.

8) MCR - Radio Tindouf. MCR are a combat folk group in love with Irish folk (flutes, violins, bagpipes). Over time they have combined this folk with the Mediterranean one, from Morocco to the Balkans. This piece has a beautiful melody and African percussion, in my opinion very well blended with the Italian accordion, the Irish flute and bagpipes and the vaguely oriental violin. Missing, to be a masterpiece, a major work on the arrangement, which in the third verse is the same as the previous ones, the piece slips away too smoothly to be entirely a gem of an author - it would have taken a slowdown in the vocals and in the arrangement in the ending.

9) Christian. Experimental piece, which finds the right balance between noise and music, evocative sound, voices that shape a melody, the detachment towards three minutes is essential to avoid repetition. Masterpiece. Gold medal.

10) Mike - percussive piece, with very sophisticated sounds, and surreal circus mood. Very original. Honorable mention.

11) Cristi - jam blues, sober, dirty, maybe a little slow. Excellent instrumental interlude with guitar and organ, good vocals. Honorable mention.

12) Dr Wu23 - Donovan memorable piece, hypnotic, beautifully sung. Paradoxically, it is one of his major pieces where the arrangement is lacking, in fact he could have varied the music more, put a solo or a final coda, and instead nothing, the piece is the same from start to finish, simple, bare. In this way it increases the hypnocity and the catchiness but from the strictly musical point of view it could be even more memorable.

***Saperlipopette: i dont find your piece.

Okay magic people!

I'm casting my votes for:

1-) The Unseen - Evidently the Spirits Have Taken Over (Saperlipopette) - Wonderfully atmospheric tinged with some delightful eeriness.
2-)
Donovan - Season of the Witch (dr wu23) - I know this song, and love it so much that I can't do anything but vote for it.
3-)
Mick Karn - Plaster the Magic Tongue (TCat) - A very nice mood shifter song, in a good way. Loved it.

TBH, Erang's other stuff didn't interest me this much. You might wanna check this out though! Darchon is actually a nefarious black metal band, but this "interlude" is very haunting. Please listen to it till the end. I'd like to hear what you think about it, if you can spare time for that. Smile

Second batch:

The Unseen - Ev. the Spirits've Taken Over (Saperlipopette)
The intro reminds me a bit of the start of a rap song or maybe a dance track (lo-fi sound, vinyl noise and so), but then there is a key change, so it is clearly not the case. Around 2:00 there's a break of sorts, and the sound gets pretty ominous with some off-key sounds. Speaking voice partly recorded in reverse. Then an almost grotesque change to something more happy-go-lucky with oom-pah-pah accordion and glockenspiel, and the song fades out. Interesting track that I will have to hear again.

Modena City Ramblers - Radio Tindouf (jamesbaldwin)
Folkish song. It has mostly (only?) acoustic instrumentation: several percussion instruments, accordion, acoustic guitar, tin whistle, violin. The bass may be electric? I like it a lot.

HyCo - Witches (Lewian)
Rather late-80's to early 90's soundtrack-sounding, especially with the drum sounds. They are however counterpointed by the more organic guitar sound. I will have to hear it again to judge it properly, especially since we're into a sound pretty far from what I normally listen to.

Mick Karn - Plaster the Magic Tongue (TCat)
Funky track complete with wah-wah guitar and slap bass. At times it sounds pretty cacophonic, especially when the guitar solo comes in (which is a positive thing in my world). The flute is a bit of an oddity in this universe.

Bloodrock - Magic Man (Cristi)
Very disturbing album cover which I recognize from many of these Worst Album Covers lists. The music is pretty cool though, especially with the Fender Rhodes (one of my favourite instruments). There are some nice vocals too. The guitar solo is rather Clapton-like. Maybe the track is a bit long for that type of music.

Donovan - Season of the Witch (dr wu23)
I am not very familiar with Donovan, and I have never heard this song before - which is kind of strange since he influenced some of the artists I listen to. There's a lot of emphasis in the organ(s). Fine song with a melody that is perhaps a little too monotonous for me, especially in the chorus where he is singing the same note much of the time. But I guess he mostly went for the mood.

Video removed for space

With the Erang, I meant I wanted to hear more of that piece, as in an extension, it was shorter than I felt it need have been.

Darchong  “Crossing The Celestial Path To Infinities And Beyond”  Haunting keyboards with synth washes underneath.  Joined by synthesized orchestral sound, in a way that denotes despair (to me, anyway).  The melody shifts a bit, evoking, as the title would suggest, spaciousness and eternity.  There is an opening up of feeling towards the end, are they reaching some sort of destination (other than the coda, of course), or have they gone so far there is no possibility of turning back?

If the Erang piece had stretched out to this length, it would have been a mightier battle to 1st place.  This is quite enjoy, as it allows one to travel with it.

So, here's for my verdict... The first two were the obvious ones for me, the third one rather a toss-up between the four remaining of my short-list (so much a matter of "the mood of the moment" because of the different styles...):

- Mick Karn - Plaster the Magic Tongue
- The Unseen - Ev. the Spirits've Taken Over
- The Budos Band - Magus Mountain

I'm really sorry that I'm not responding to such compliments, as I see singing as a hobby and sing for fun. NEVER thought of being a pro singer. Never did anything for that, even rejected some offers.

So, I belatedly thank to you, Lewian and Snicolette for your kind words about my singing in this and the previous poll (another band, another song). If I'm forgetting someone, accept my apologies.

Oh yes, measured and enthralling vocals. Excellent singing.

The use of the voice recalls me that of Chris Cornell.

Thanks man! BTW, I don't "try" to sing like someone. Or more accurately, I gave up being a Bruce Dickinson wannabe after I was 23 years old. But, Chris Cornell... Another singer that my singing is likened to. That should be the 40th or so. LOL

I'm doing another listen, but I am not yet ready to vote. Some very strong tracks here.

Mick Karn is great as ever, I love his whole discography and this one is well selected, but there is enough to vote that I hadn't known yet.
Some candidates:
The first entry Erang is of course great for an Art Zoyd fan and lover of dark atmosphere. I'm always up for slick instrumentals anyway, and The Budos Band has produced another one of these. I Mother Earth does the kind of heavy that I like. The Song to the Magic Frog has something magic indeed. More magic comes from the Klaus Morlock/Unseen track, this is exactly how it sounds when the spirits take over. And then, excellent as ever, Nicky's entry Iron and Wine (actually this sounds a bit atypical for you but the quality is surely there). So that's six and I have three votes.

Finally I go for Erang, the Unseen, and Iron and Wine, but it was very very tight between those listed. (Listening Modena City Ramblers again, I include them in the top list, but the votes are as they are.)
