Time to resurrect this great thread that was started back in 2007:

http://www.progarchives.com/Forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=7287&PN=2

I've been really getting into 60s "garage psych bands" from the mid- to late-1960s:  Love, Strawberry Alarm Clock, Ultimate Spinach, The Chocolate Watch Band, The Electric Prunes, The Seeds, The West Coast Pop Experimental Band, 13th Floor Elevators, The Small Faces, It's a Beautiful Day, The Deviants, The Beau Brummels, Skip Spence, and H.P. Lovecraft are a few of the more "obscure" ones.

I want more!

If you know more bands from this era doing the early psych stuff, I'd love to hear about them!

Try Fever Tree. I have their first 2 albums on one CD - a good value if you can find it. They had a minor hit with “San Francisco Girls” (not as corny as it sounds). They’re one of my favorites in that style - they could rock pretty hard but also were great at softer, even jazzy moments.

LOVE Fever Tree!  The Man Who Paints the Pictures, Filagree and Shadow, and Unlock My Door.  Great version of Fever, also.  A huge fan of Love, HP Lovecraft, The Seeds, and It's a Beautiful Day, too.  San Francisco Girls was also inspired, by Fever Tree.

You might also want to explore The Kaleidoscope (US), and Ars Nova (US), less garage-y but still, early psych.

^Looks strangely Brit-oriented. I was always thinking that the phenom was more American. I'll have to check these out.

I know the song, not the album it came from. Thanks for reminding me!

Thanks, Nickie. I was just listening to Kaleidoscope for the first time yesterday. Ars Nova I've heard of but never heard their music. Yet.

I'm surprised at how much of these early albums are not so garage-y and quite professionally rendered.

Thanks, Nickie. I was just listening to Kaleidoscope for the first time yesterday. Ars Nova I've heard of but never heard their music. Yet.

I'm surprised at how much of these early albums are not so garage-y and quite professionally rendered.

My two favourite Kaleidoscope LPs are A Beacon from Mars and Side Trips.  All of them are a bit uneven, but those were early years.  Ars Nova only had 2 LPs, but they are treasured by me.  I do have all of these in their vinyl state, as well as CDs, to spare the vinyl.  But I do occasionally pull them out and put them on the turntable.  Some real gems on both.

^ there were actually THREE bands named Kaleidoscope that were around in 1966-67 playing psychedelic rock.

One was from the UK, the other from the US and another lesser known band fro the Dominican Republic but ended up in Mexico and despite being from Spanish speaking country released its one album in English.

The OP referenced mostly US bands ..and they are all good...have most of them on cd and many on  original lp ... but The Rubble Set is freakin awesome for the obscure Brit bands...psych and some freakbeat also...well worth the investment imho...20cd's
