Sketchshow is a band from Southampton, UK. According to themselves they are a 'math-rock fusion' band.
I suggest them for Eclectic or Math Rock, but I personally think that Eclectic fits better.

Here is their latest release:

this partially reminds me of Bent Knee (in Crossover) or A Formal Horse (in Heavy), not only due to the female vocals
I'm still unsure, nice album anyway

Hi

Looking back at the posts it seems we never got any word about this so looks like Rivertree dropped the ball and nobody else noticed to pick it up

Just listening now it sounds more like art pop than eclectic prog

You would have to include a full biography for it to be considered

I'd think if it has a chance anywhere it's probably crossover after perusing just a few tracks

Unfortunately, I could not find any biographical information about them, other than what I have posted above. Probably one needs to contact the band to get some. Well, I would not mind bothering, if there is not any chance to get them approved here. But thank you for considering!

Rivertree actually did alert the Eclectic team on 25th June 2021.

The first team member to comment in Eclectic thought they could be a move to Crossover, saying that they reminded him of Thank You Scientist and A Formal Horse.
The second team member said he thought it should be moved to Post/Math Pop, a comment with which the first team member then agreed.

Sketchshow were therefore moved to Post/Math for evaluation on 16th July 2021, where they were rejected the following day by a single 'no' vote (Post/Math was just a two-man team in those days) with the comment that he could see why they were rejected in Eclectic, going on to say that it was fantastic pop, but had no place in PA.

However, they weren't rejected in Eclectic at all - it was simply a move from there to Post/Math.

To my ears this band plays a fusion of math rock and power pop, and on https://rateyourmusic.com/artist/sketchshow" rel="nofollow - Rateyourmusic they are classed as math rock.

I found two reviews of their 'Waves' album which also class them as math rock:
https://theprogressivesubway.com/2021/06/10/review-sketchshow-waves/" rel="nofollow - - https://invictamagazine.com/review-sketchshow-waves-album/ .

Both these reviews were positive ones, suggesting that the band potentially had a great future ahead of them. Unfortunately a couple of band members quit at the end of October 2021, and the band appears to be on indefinite hiatus at the moment, so apart from the release in December of that year of 'Crests', consisting of a couple of tracks that didn't make it onto the 'Waves' album, it appears that there isn't going to be any new material to allow a re-evaluation in Post/Math...but that's where this band belongs imho.

Sadly, it does look like we have hit the buffers for the time being, since the band is not currently active. We could evaluate them in Crossover, I suppose, but that depends on the thoughts of the other two team members.

I'll drop a link to this post in the Crossover team thread and let the others have a listen to the music, but I can't promise anything. Embarrassed

oh, you're right! A tiny little post that i missed. When a band gets shufffled around it tends to get lost which is what happened. Crossover :)

^ Thanks Mike. I see you've already alerted the team, so I'll add them to our chart. I'm gonna give them a 'yes' anyway, 'cos I think they do belong here, and Post/Math is no longer an option as things stand. Thumbs Up

Well, that was quick! Three straight 'yes' votes in Crossover and the band is cleared! I'll post a biography here in a short while, and hopefully they'll be added sometime over the next few days. Smile

Okay, with the band now cleared, here is their biography. It's no literary masterpiece, I'm afraid, but it's guaranteed to be 100% AI and plagiarism free lol!

------------------------------------------------------------------

Sketchshow is a Southampton, UK based band, formed in early 2016, whose music blends elements of math rock, funk, prog, and pop-punk. Originally a purely instrumental band, the early line-up consisted of Joel Bamigboye on bass, Adam Curran and Luke Phillips on guitar, with Scott van der Leeden completing the formation on drums & percussion.

Adam and Joel had met at Southampton University in 2015, and were always sending music back and forth including some of the songs that Adam had written. Later on that year Adam decided that he wanted to form a band around the material that he'd been working on, and posted online to find additional members. Luke replied and became the second guitar player, with Scott becoming the drummer shortly after.

Their stated influences and favourites include artists from a variety of music genres, such as Louis Cole, Tom Misch, Arcane Roots, The Killers, Snarky Puppy, Green Day, and Genesis, which shows how the four musicians actually come from totally unrelated musical backgrounds.

They played their first gig in the Southampton University Student Union (The Bridge) on 25th May 2016, and although they started off as an instrumental act, they always felt that their songs required a vocalist to really bring them to life.

After a year of searching, and many auditions of prospective candidates, the band finally found their singer, Satin Bailey, at the beginning of 2017. Satin also became the band's lyric writer, and their first gig as a five piece was at the Talking Heads independent music venue in Southampton on Sunday 4th June 2017.

They then began recording the songs that were eventually to become their debut EP with Daly George at The Ranch Production House, Southampton on 14th June 2017. A single entitled 'Every Excuse' was released at the beginning of March 2018, with the 5-track 'Patchwork' EP following on 6th April that year.

The EP was very well received, and the band gigged regularly in the local area to promote it. However, their bassist Joel Bamigboye left at the end of October 2018, with the band due to re-enter The Ranch Production House to begin working on their debut full album just a couple of months later in December.

Initially they managed to recruit another bassist who was based at Chichester University, but he couldn't commit to the band long term and left two weeks before the band were due to start recording the new album. This meant that bass duties at the recording sessions had to be shared by the two guitarists in the band, and on some of the tracks a session bassist whom they had known at Southampton University named Will Sales was used.

Will had been running the music society at Southampton University in 2016/2017, and Adam & Joel were part of his committee at the time. However, Will didn't know the Sketchshow drummer Scott van der Leeden at this point. As the recording process continued during the first half of 2019, Will gradually became more and more involved with the activities of Sketchshow, and he was officially announced as their new bassist in August of that year.

Three singles from the forthcoming album entitled 'Chrysalis', 'Innsæi' and 'Delight' were released in February, March and April 2021 respectively, with the debut full album 'Waves' following on 7th May of that year, with former bassist Joel Bamigboye contributing a guest keyboard solo on track 5.

Further gigs to promote the new album were performed during the summer and autumn of 2021, but their gig at the Fiddler's Elbow in Camden, London on 31st October was the last one with Satin and Scott in the band, as both decided to depart immediately afterwards due to changes in circumstances since they originally joined the band.

There has been no official announcement to say that the band has been terminated, but as of late August 2024 we must assume that they are on indefinite hiatus. Two tracks that didn't make it onto the 'Waves' album were released as 'Crests (B-Sides)' in early December 2021. Their music would appeal to fans of acts such as Bent Knee or A Formal Horse.
