From the list - Mastodon. They usually share the top spot with Dream Theater for me... And this brings me to the question: Where is Dream Theater???

None of those listed are even close to being my favourite PM band, but from that list I voted Leprous. But it could just as easily have been half a dozen or more others listed, as they are all much of a muchness in how much I like them. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Maybe the OP doesn't consider them to be "modern prog metal" because they pretty much invented it....

They're definitely one of my favourite prog metal acts, just behind Ayreon and possibly slightly ahead of Devin Townsend, although Devy's more recent output is far better than DT's....

To clarify, I am using the term "modern" to disqualify any legacy legendary acts like Opeth, Dream Theater, Symphony X, etc. I know that's not a scientific or exact cut off but I am trying to isolate the new-ish acts as best I can.

If Cellar Darling are classified as prog metal (which they should be IMHO) then they would be top of my list of modern prog metal artists.  They're first two albums are fantastic!

I do that all the time. I highlight the choice I want, and forget to click cast vote. I think it’s because on FB, your vote registers immediately. That’s my excuse anyway.

I might go for something different, just to give some other band some support.

Elder, they have gathered the seeds of Mastodons Crack the Skye and expanded an entire universe from it with soundscapes and tones. Tesseract, Gojira, Mastodon, Alcest, OM, Between the Burried and Me creates also magical music.

Had there been "Other", I would have picked it for either Devin Townsend, Anubis Gate or Teramaze.
But for the sake of options, Periphery gets my vote for growing more on me since the beginning. Vola comes second.

Really love The contortionist, The Ocean, Mastadon, Gojita and Intronaut.

But i cant choose between two very differents bands

Elder: great band, i enjoy a lot the album "Lore" and "Omen", they are heavy psych, prog, sludge, stoner, they added a mellotrom in their last work.

VOLA: the guys from Denmark are great, djent riffs + Mew melodies + Asger voice sound to me like Roland Orzabl of Tears for fears, very unique sound.

Voted for Elder..even if I find the production of their albums downright horrendous. The drums especially get on my nerves after a while. If they just emplored a more natural way of capturing the drums they would gain so much in dynamics and tension. Oh well...the songs are all pretty good and I really dig the electronics they’ve started to implement.
I also really like Vola although I wouldn’t call them progressive metal. More like metal with art-pop tendencies. Anyhoo I hope all this Toyota Corolla nonsense soon is over with, because I would love to go see these guys in a live setting.

Fave modern progressive metal though for me is Oranssi Pazuzu and Waste Of Space Orchestra. They nail the production as well as incorporating psychedelic and something akin to symphonic elements to the music. Add one Finnish Navajo medicine man on vocals..and I’m sold. Indians always attracted me far more than cowboys. I blame Hiawatha and Yakari

I agree. VOLA are not progressive metal. More like crossover prog. With their new album out, I think they should be reassessed for PA inclusion.

In your honest opinion, do you think AAL don't get enough love here on the archives? I personally think thats true. Like in prog metal circles outside of this place, AAL albums are very highly regarded but they kind of fall flat on this site's rankings.

Can you elaborate on that? I genuinely disliked their latest record. It was sloppy and meandering. They do not seem to be cut out for making long purely heavy albums. WIthout that ecclecticism characteristic of everything up to Affinity, they can't seem to hold their own.

I hear this. They seem to employ the techniques of post-rock production (think Russian Circles or Cult of Luna) which I guess makes sense from a certain point of view but it absolutely eliminates the drums' punchiness.

To everybody that said "from the list" - who else would you have included here?

Ill reiterate, I deliberately did not want to include Devin Townsend, Dream Theater, Opeth, etc. I wanted that next tier or generation of bands to be reflected in this poll. So I am indeed curious what else was deserving to be here.

I genuinely can understand why someone might like Virus but I am going to go out on a limb here and say you haven't been keeping up with prog metal generally over the previous 10 years before virus was released. Is that a fair assessment? I don't say that in a condescending manner, I just believe that for people who have been consistently following the modern prog metal scene are likely to find Virus a fairly unoriginal attempt at capturing that sound. If Im wrong on this, let me know. No sense in me continuing to believe an inaccurate intuition Smile

I just clicked on the first track listed on Spotify... Im blown away. Thank you for this!

However, if that track is anything to go by, this is definitely more of a heavy prog group.

Definitely have to go with Gojira. The Link, From Mars to Sirius, and The Way of All Flesh are like a modern metal holy trinity for me

But I'd also put Between the Buried and Me, Mastodon, Animals as Leaders, and Protest the Hero as strong runner-up bands Smile

Of that list, I've only heard a bit of Haken and Leprous... that's it. I seem to remember thinking that both were OK, but not enough of my thing to start exploring their discographies. This post is almost four years old, but I see that this poll confused a few people.  And I'm not really sure what is considered Prog Metal, or PM enough. I might have done this as must not have released its debut album before 1998 or something like that.  I was going to say post 2000, but the late was a good year for releases on the metal side.  I like lots included in PA's Experimental/ Post Metal and various of it I have not really thought of as metal, such as Uboa.  I also like in that category Boris, maudlin of the Well, Neurosis, but that was founded in the 80s, Pelican, Sigh.... I anyway, I went with Between the Buried and Me from the list. There are albums I like included in all of the metal categories at PA (and in all of the categories at PA, for that matter).

EDIT: Reading though page two, looks like there is some very good stuff mentioned for me to check out more from.
