Who are your top 5 progressive metal bands from the 2010's? Please limit this to bands that have only released albums in the 2000's. So like Mastodon and Between the Buried and Me are ok, Dream Theater and Opeth are out. - The Contortionist
- Elder
- Periphery
- Haken
- The Ocean

Not my favourite genre tbh and not one I know a lot about. I do have Mastodon and Haken CDs, I also have the last Thank You Scientist one but I wouldn't call them prog-metal myself (they're in crossover prog here). I also have a Threshold album which is pretty good but they're not allowed, so I would probably vote -
1. Mastodon 2. Haken

Lol well I guess you could start with the other group's in my list not listed in yours.
You mentioned Caligula's Horse. I've been somewhat underwhelmed by them though I am willing to properly give them another go. What's your go to album for them?

Yea Thank You Scientist is definitely one of those head scratchers in terms of labelling (Crossover prog is definitely not a good one ).
Ultimately my goal here is strip away the Opeth's and classic prog metal acts still making good music today to see what else the community members consider top tier prog metal.

That is quite a random list. I am legitimately impressed how you can really relate to some of these relatively obscure acts despite describing yourself as "not huge in this genre."

I don’t know if I have any particular favourites. But the following 30 bands put out some music I thoroughly enjoyed last year, that is progressive metal in one form or another. As far as I’m aware, all these bands fit the bill - but I admit to not checking their discography to see when the first release was for any of them.

I would say it’s more likely that those not huge in the genre are the ones who will end up liking the more obscure acts. Prog metal is definitely one of my least favourite genres to listen to (although there are plenty of prog metal bands and artists I enjoy), and a lot of what I like tends to be those obscure acts, I guess? Plus, of course, what seems obscure to one person is not necessarily to others...
I struggled to think of any bands or artists that particularly stood out for me, which is why I made a list of bands and artists whose albums I enjoyed last year. As I read back on the other posts, I’m seeing quite a few names that would probably be fighting for a position in my top five for this time period. I, definitely going to be watching this thread, to see what other names pop up. 👍🏻

Hahaha, i've only heard their release from last year which I enjoyed, nothing earth shattering but overall pretty good. The only other thing ive heard from them is the song marigold which kicks ass! Yeah I only got deep into prog metal the last year, but unfortunately that hasn't included keeping super up to date on newer bands.
Periphery is not for me unfortunately, a little too abrasive for me and I don't really like the metalcore style of vocals.

I've come to this genre from the Avant / RIO direction so that tends to be reflected in my tastes here, its coming from bands like Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, and the experimental edgy math rock bands like Upsilon Acrux & Zevious. The keyboard player in Ephemeral Sun is a good friend so glad to give them a shout out (and the albums are great)

Sorry I know Im being confusing. Basically Im looking for bands that really define the 2010's for you that weren't already super established from the previous generation. So DT and Opeth already made a name for themselves in the 90's. Haken and Leprous are examples of bands that really became "elite" in the 2010's. Between the Buried and Me and Mastodon fall on the line but I gotta draw it somewhere!

So Enslaved is technically out of contention but no doubt their 2010's output has been nothing short of incredible.
Which Alcest record would recommend? I have never listened to them.

I totally hear where you're coming from. I grew up with a lot of New Wave of American Heavy Metal with bands like Lamb of God, God Forbid, Shadows Fall, and to a lesser extent, Killswitch Engage. For me Periphery really took that vibe but utilized techniques from more technical forms of metal (mathcore, tech-death, guitar virtuoso stuff). It was almost a natural evolution for me.

Hi ssmarcus!!
You are right!!, my mistake, ill replace Enslaved with VOLA.
I recommend 2 records by the band Alcest, their debut "Souvenirs D´un Autre Monde" and "Les Voyages De L´ame", Neige is really a genious, basically he created a new genre.

that's about all I can come up within the parameters set.
I also like Threshold and Haken but neither are allowed as the first was around in the 90's and second are not classified by PA as prog metal (although Vector and Virus probably are!)

Riverside debuted in 2002.
I've always seen Haken as progressive metal.

I don't know too many bands, so if I learned more, there may be others.
Riverside - though their recent output is less metal.
Haken - prog metal tag would suit them better with the last two albums.
The Contortionist - Language is favorite and I saw them open for Haken last year and they were great.
Between the Buried and Me - I was looking forward to see them play The Great Misdirect last year until Covid.
Elder - so I ended up listing 3 of the OP's five band. I guess I didn't add much other than he has good taste. 😁

Mad points to you for not only listing, but knowing OF Behold The Arctopus. I love their EP and Skullgrid discs. New stuff is just as good! I always say this band was created entirely around the sound of Larks' Tongues in Aspic part 2, and Colin Marston does not deny this lol.

^This is what I wrote about the debut for TPA:
Caelestra is the vision of Frank Harper (The Fever Sea), and is a sidereal slice of progressive black metal fused with ’80s synthwave and sci-fi. It’s a compelling combination that no longer surprises me like the first time I came across it (via Italian band Progeni Terrestre Pura), but continues to enchant. Caelestra reminds me very much of pTp, and that should be considered high praise, because they are pretty much the epitome of sci-fi black metal, and what any band pursuing this niche should aspire to. On the other hand, they will never be mistaken for pTp, which is just as important, as there is no point in being derivative. In fact, I have no idea if Frank Harper is even familiar with pTp, and there is every chance he is not. But I would now put Caelestra right up there with pTp in terms of quality and innovation.
It’s hard to believe this is a debut, and I guess in a way it is not – but you couldn’t ask for a more fully realised vision than this. It deserves hyperbolic descriptors such as cinematic, that I normally hesitate to use. The many moods and textures of Black Widow Nebula really do give the sense of taking the listener on a journey. Harper states that the album was “inspired as much by Gojira, Ihsahn and Devin Townsend as it is by Vangelis, Tangerine Dream and Maurice Jarre”, and that definitely shows. Thus, one thing I particularly like is that the black metal does not dominate, and nor do the harsh vocals. There are some truly beautiful soundscapes produced by Harper, that co-exist with the most brutal of passages. Layers of synth sounds pervade and colour the music so that it is the aural equivalent of the cover art. The drums sound programmed and processed, which would normally be a problem for me, but I absolutely love them within this type of music (just as I love them in pTp). The artificial sound of the drums perfectly complements the overall tone and theme of the album.
Black Widow Nebula is an album that I’m sure I would have included in my end-of-year list, had it been released earlier in the year. The only reason I left it out was because I was afraid of recency bias. However, the more I move away from its release date, and the more I listen to and enjoy it, the more I feel guilty for having been over-cautious, and leaving it out. This is a truly fabulous debut that has much to offer the adventurous listener.

As I said I've come to a bunch of this from the Avant end of the spectrum. The most recent release by Behold The Arctopus is their best in my opinion, the new drummer who is more of a percussionist adds a lot to their sound.
I saw BTA live in 2019 in a tiny bar in Bosdton with about 20 people there, they were superb.

The OP wants bands that started and released albums in the 2000s and 2010s. So Anathema, Vanden Plas and Threshold do not fit here.
Good choice for Subsignal, one of the best bands in recent years.

My appreciation of 'Prog Metal' was never the same as most posts in here... Threshold, Vanden Plas and Therion were always my faves; they consistently touched an emotional nerve within me which few others ever reached, even DT, SX or Shadow Gallery who would probably be next on the list... then, I also liked Riverside, Anathema, Subsignal, Wolverine and PT, but frankly for different, non-metal reasons?
