Magnum are an English hard rock band. They were formed in Birmingham by Tony Clarkin and Bob Catley in order to appear as the resident band at the Rum Runner nightclub in the city. Magnum have undergone several changes in personnel over the years; however, the core of Catley and Clarkin remain. Got off the train after On A Storytellers Night but they were huge with my friends in our teens, must have played Chase The Dragon to death back in the day. I really really liked Kingdom of Madness, Magnum 2 and the Live 'Marauder' lp (plus the 2 x 7'' live ep pack which came out the same time) and saw the band at that time.. they were much more prog sounding at that time (very early 80's). Saw them later in the 80's supporting Marillion & Jethro Tull and liked some of 'Wings of Heaven' but found it a bit slick and AOR after that for my taste. ------------- |

early albums and their 80s work - what I like the most from them. Gave up on their post 2000 comeback albums, I listened to something and I found very predictable and boring.

Redcar was a fairly rough area of Northern England when I was growing up in the area. The Coatham Bowl was a small all standing venue where many of the bands coming through the area played. This particular Magnum gig in the early 80's was notable because someone stole a pedal off the front of the stage during the Magnum gig. Magnum stopped playing and insisted it be returned. At the start it was quite fun with rowdy drunken banter from the crowd and plastic beer glasses being thrown around. After about 10 minutes of this we saw a plastic beer glass fly overhead with a turd in it. That was the moment that we decided it was the right time to leave the gig.

Like some others, I very much like their first albums up till On A Storyteller's Night - many great catchy and captivating songs, and great playing overall. Great melodic rock, but I lost interest after that... ------------- The razamataz is a pain in the bum |

That’s true about the reason you liked the band up to “On A Storyteller’s Night” but there’s a huge amount of equally catchy and captivating songs in the. I quite like 80s Magnum. On a Story Tellers Night is a good old 80s AOR album. I dont think Vigilante and Wings of Heaven are as good, but are still 2 albums worth owning if you like the 80s AOR sound. The title track of Vigilante is great, Wings of Heaven has some good songs on aswell. If i remember rightly, after Wings of Heaven they stopped being AOR'ey and just sounded like typical run of the mill rock, like Mike and the Mechanics ect.
