So it sounds like the absolute universe is a rare release that actually lives up to the hype that preceded it.

Any other thoughts or comments on the release.

I've only listened to the double disc edition. I'm amazed by how much Roine there is on it! That guy's songwriting and vocal work are always top shelf! Oh, and I just got an email from recordstore.uk that my preorder had been dispatched! I'm super excitebike! My fave song is "Lonesome Rebel" ATM I think. But that's gonna change after a few spins probably.

I've heard the breath of life once and am listening to Forevermore now. It's really good. Blueray when I get an hour or two in front of the tele and Surround sound system.

Listened to it a couple of times now. Deeply impressed by the double cd, which I think is easily their best since the debut.

"The Absolute Universe" is amazing. My fave Transatlantic. Just one thing, why does Neal look so pissed off in all his photos for this release?

I've got both editions and still ploughing my way through them - they're competing for listening time with Mr Wilson and Lifesigns at the moment.
Initial listens indicate they're both pretty good but need more time.

Which version have you been listening to? I tried the first few tracks of the abirdged version but thought it sounded a little samey. I figure its not for me but i'd be willing to give it another stab if Forevermore is the way to go.

^I know that TA and Neal are not for you. I read your review of "Whirlwind" live. No big deal. Forevermore won't change your mind.

Glad to see you back and posting!  I received the new Transatlantic album in the mail yesterday.  I plan on giving it a first listen today.  They are truly a gateway band for me.  I was listening to the classic bands at that point and being a Rush fan led me to Dream Theater and of course Pull Me Under on the radio.  I had to check out this Transatlantic band because Mike Portnoy was playing on it.  I was blown away.  Of course that meant I had to check out these strange new bands (to me) called Spock's Beard, The Flower Kings, and Marillion...and of course, the rest as they say, is history.

I do like a lot of Spock's Beard and I enjoyed the Similtude of a Dream. I'd like to at least give it one more shot since TFKs Islands was my favorite release of last year.

Also glad to see you're back, was just wondering what had happened to you the other day as well.

I'm loving it. Is it as good as SMPT:e or Bridge Across Forever? Maybe not but I like it a lot more than The Whirlwind or Kaleidoscope. Listened to both versions a bunch of times now and I can't decide which I prefer...

My Ultimate Edition is stuck in Atlanta. Radiant has apologized and sent us a free link to Neal's streaming service to tide us over!!! Still I'm very pleased I ordered it as it is now SOLD OUT!!!

$100 well spent.

Scott and Doug. Thanks for the kind words. I needed a break.

What do y'all think of Pete's bass playing? His tone, growl, and the notes he plays is so so good. He carries this release to a higher level. His signing?? - not so good. But Mike's lead vocal tune smokes. Best I've ever heard him sing. Maybe it's just the shine of this being new to me, but I can't stop listening. And the mix/master courtesy Rich Mouser makes my ears happy.

Hmm...1st listen was kind of disappointing to be honest.  It didn't have the WOW factor of the first couple of albums.  Just kind of sounds like another Neal Morse solo album/Neal Morse Band album.  Hopefully, future listens will have a better feel for me.  I didn't dislike it, but certainly wasn't wowwed either.  I also was listening while working so the attention wasn't really where I would want it to be.  Here's to future listens!

^ Hmm I was afraid of that......hoping many listens will be the key. Too many here and on YT reviewers like the album quite a lot.

I love Pete's playing in everything he does with Marillion, TA and Edison's Children. His tone is excellent and always thick and beefy, right up front....where it should be. I wish DT would take notice and bring John Myung up to par, but they always mix him too low and back, shameful! Angry

Really hoping my version is done well mix/master wise, Kaleidoscope was not very good sound wise, too compressed and not very good dynamics. Rich can be hit and miss.....

Pete is truly the unsung hero of the album. He's just on fire throughout!!! The singing...not so much!!!

But "Looking For The Light" is Mike's best ever vocal turn.

IMHO Pete's singing used to be better back in the day. But on this album it's still ok.

I took the song Solitude and edited out the "Love Made a Way" sections with Neal's vocals down to 3:54 minutes. Now it sounds way better. xD

There's an interesting "round table review" on http://www.dprp.net/reviews/2021-016" rel="nofollow - DPRP : five of their reviewers talking about the same album.
I listened to the album and I can only - and completely - agree with Jerry van Kooten's take on it (although my rating would be slightly less severe).

I respect Jerry van Kooten's opinion.
Quote Heartless, forced, lazy writing, and the singing is just not good.

HOWEVER, I HAVE THE GOD DARN RIGHTS TO THROW IT TO THE GARBAGE CAN AND ENJOY THE ALBUM. B)

It's funny how different people see the same album in completely different ways. xD

LOL You definitely have the "darn right" to like that album! LOL

I read DPRP since its beginnings, 25 years ago, and I like it that they do those round table reviews - when you know a bit the preferences of the reviewers it is often very informative and instructive.

@Cristi: You don't have to pay attention to him, but you might be interested in what he writes. Jerry van Kooten is a reviewer at DPRP since a very long time (maybe since its start, but I might be mistaken about that. I met him a couple of times during different Pallas concerts, somewhere in the previous century - a sympathetic guy, which of course does not mean that I always agree with what he writes, but this time I do. The four other reviewers are very positive about the Transatlantic album...

I read Jerry’s review, and it is extremely well written. I rather like the album, actually, probably their best effort since the amazing debut, but an honest review is always far superior to a sycophantic one.

I have the Forevermore version and I love it. This and The Whirlwind I would say are my favourite TA albums, though parts of the first album are amazing too. All Of The Above is one of my favourite prog epics, and I love We All Need Some Light. I find the second album a bit too heavy in places for my tastes, but the title track is beautiful. Kaleidoscope was a bit disappointing after The Whirlwind but The Absolute Universe is a definite return to form.

I would agree with many of the comments above, Mike's singing on Looking For The Light is his best ever, Rainbow Sky is a brilliant song, and Pete's bass on The Darkness In The Light is amazing. I also like the songs that Roine sings, many of them have a strong Flower Kings vibe to them.

I've listened to the abridged version once (on Spotify) and I wasn't particularly impressed. Maybe I need to listen again.

That guy needs to take some medicine or go use that toilet, can't handle all that moving back and forth. There are tons of reviews out now.

Having spun the album several times, it has really shown me a return to what I think of with Transatlantic which is SMPTe and The Whirlwind. I have Forevermore (Extended Version) and am really happy with the outcome.

^^^ haha yeah I didn't want to say anything cause there could be some underlying cause to that, but man that got annoying after about 3 seconds.

As for the actual topic, I made my thoughts pretty clear in my review how I felt about the different versions

I really do see value in both. They have different vibes.
Forevermore is very much like The Flower Kings' Islands and The Breath Of Life is similar to Neal's Sola Gratia.
And I preferred Sola Gratia so I am leaning into the shorter version lately.
But then I miss "Bully" and "Rainbow Sky." And I'm back into Forevermore.

I listened to Neal Morse's demo version of The Absolute Universe (the Big One) and I've noticed something funny that was left intact in the final version. xD At the very end of the song "Bully" (2:07 timestamp) deep in the background, you can hear a voice saying "let's put some sound effects in here". xD

I've now read all the reviews in the PA reviews section. I get a little miffed when people complain about the perceived lack of originality in some of the songs. Do people remember the first one. It featured a 20 minute cover song of a Procol Harum song.

People who don't like Transatlantic are obviously missing out and we should feel sorry for them. Maybe there's a concerto for bassoon and glockenspiel out there more up their alley - I'll stick with Progressive Rock. (With the emphasis on Rock. Not Metal or Jazz or fake Classical.)

I'd have Absolute Universe up there with some of the very best progressive rock I've listened to and I'm not a particularly great Transatlantic fan. Again I just don't get the criticism of the new album. To each his own I guess.
