It always Feels Good to Me to give warm praise to some of our much-loved prog artists, and this time it's the turn of the legendary One of a Kind drummer, Bill Bruford. It Seems Like a Lifetime Ago since he was a member of YES and King Crimson, bands of which he was A Part, and Yet Apart from at various times. In the late 1970's, his beloved Jazz Fusion project came to fruition in the form of Bruford. The third and final mysteriously-titled Bruford album, Gradually Going Tornado (1980), was apparently named after an exhibit by an obscure Romanian artist displayed at a London art gallery in 1974. Bill Bruford teamed up with keyboard wizard Patrick Moraz in the mid-1980's for two experimental albums of Music for Piano and Drums, and the Flags were flying high again for Bill in the late-80's when All Heaven Broke Loose in the progosphere for the long-awaited Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe album in 1989. Bill was back to his old Stamping Ground of Jazz Fusion in 1987 with the formation of Earthworks, a band you can really Dig. Bill Bruford continues to impress with Master Strokes of drumming prowess well into the 21st century, and to The Sound of Surprise from many of his fans, he released a traditional acoustic jazz quartet album in 2001. Finally, if you're still In Two Minds about Bill Bruford, then check out any of his jazzy Footloose and Fancy Free albums at the links below.

I must confess, I'd never listened to any Bill Bruford albums before today, so I have a lot of catching up to do.

I had master strokes which was a best of compilation on vinyl. I lent it to my dad and never saw it again. He either lost it or gave it away. Anyway, I never heard much of his solo stuff but I think some of it was good. I met him after an Earthworks show and he was a little bit temperamental. Still a great drummer though.

Well, I believe in giving people the benefit of the doubt. That said, he did seem like a bit of a hot head or maybe he was just in a bad mood that night. Not sure.

All 3 Bruford studio albums are incredible - especially Feels good to me and One of a kind.
I also love his Earthworks - great stuff.

I love the first three Earthworks albums in particular. He did something truly original there, also very good live. Not that highly rated on PA for some reason, but nice to see they get some appreciation here. Most Bruford albums are fine to very good with some highlights on them but overall I prefer Earthworks to them.

Yes, in just the same way as Alice Cooper, Sade and Sebastian Hardie are all band names too.
By the way, I mentioned in the introduction that Bill Bruford's band name was Bruford.

I don't own all of the music Bill contributed to, but I've heard it all. So much to be impressed by. The Moraz sessions with just the two of them are a favorite. The Bruford-Levin Upper Extremities albums also. I loved hearing his experimentation with the Simmons drums throughout the 80s. He didn't do a lot of session work but I've always loved this song:

I really love the three albums released under the Bruford moniker, and Feels Good To Me is probably my favourite out of the bunch; Holdsworth's solo on "Back To The Beginning" is one of his finest. The collaborations with Patrick Moraz are good too although I'd say those are more Moraz than Bruford. The Earthworks albums never left a huge impression with me even though there are a few songs on them that I like; they generally sound a little too smooth and slick for my taste.

I can't think of anything Bruford has played on that I don't love. Bands, solos, clinics, etc. He's far and away my favorite drummer of all time!
Fees Good to Me and One of A Kind are my go-to discs for him!

Blimey you've given an album two stars, it must be real bad.
The B.L.U.E. album is just too extreme and experimental for my reserved tastes. I'm listening to the album right now, but I'll be glad when it's finally over. If you like Cerulean Sea - posted above - then you'll probably like the album as a whole, but it's not an album I'd ever want to listen to again.

^ and ^^^ I actually love his collaborations with Michel Borstlap. No, it's not prog, it's jazz, but I think it is wonderful. Their live Every Step a Dance, Every Word a Song is wonderful too. There is a decently prized re-edition of all these (3 CDs, one DVD) that I bought last year via the Burning Shed (pre Brexit, thus) - very worth while. These, with One of a Kind and Feels Good to Me are my preferred Bruford albums... Edit: oh, with the Bruford/Levin albums, I must add...

I was In Two Minds whether to give the Bruford & Borstlap album 2 stars or 3 stars, because on the one hand, it's very technically proficient - just as you'd expect - but on the other hand, it's not an album I'd want to listen to again, even though I generally like listening to Jazz.

^ Question: might this have to do with your listening habits? I mean, I understand you have some kind of binge-listening strategy (all of Wakeman in a row, all of whichwhateverother band in a row...). My choice of listening to music is much more determined by my moods. I won't listen to Bruford/Borstlap at any moment as I don't want to listen to Yes all in a row. I think we appreciate specific music better when it corresponds to the mood of the moment and on other days we might appreciate it less, just because of a change of mood...
