Praised by critics and fans alike, this album is, in my humble opinion, overrated and quite polarizing. What do other forum users think of this 1977 'masterpiece'?

I don't know if "overrated" is the right word here, but it's overhyped still, it sold well and it's a famous album, if not one the most famous ones, several songs from it are still played everywhere.

edit: it's overrated... LOL

Not at all, but the follow-up album "Tusk" is overrated. It's a double album which should have been a single album, if you discount all of the raw songs recorded in Lindsey Buckingham's garage. Smile

What's polarizing about it? I think 99% of people agree its a classic album with relatively strong pop rock songs front to back.

It's strange, his songs on that album usually get sl*g.ed off but I love them. My version of Tusk would be his songs with most of the Stevie Nicks ones.

It is a strong pop rock album, some amazing songs, and some which are garbage.

I don't think it's overrated. It's a great album.
I think the issue is that there are many other great albums that don't get anywhere near the same amount of attention in the "lamestream media" (sorry, couldn't resist). You only have to look at PA's top 100 to work out what I'm talking about

Okay, okay, garbage might be a bit too extreme but 'Second Hand News', 'Never Going Back Again', 'Oh Daddy', 'Gold Dust Woman' are so edgeless and make me roll my eyes.
This said, 'The Chain' and 'Dreams' are killer tracks.

I like Joe Jackson's version of "Oh Well". Beyond that, FM are a pass for me. All of their music is overrated to my ears.

Don't know. It's not by any means groundbreaking or anything, but it's still a very good album. Perhaps it sounds a bit too streamlined and commercial, but the songs are very well crafted, and most importantly, it's a very accomplished album. Personal favourites: "Dreams", "The Chain", "You Make Loving Fun" and "Gold Dust Woman".

It’s an exceptional album, deservedly mega selling. I also love Tusk. The Mac were a great band, and Buckingham is a genius. One of my favourite non-prog albums is Gift Of Screws.

No, it is not overrated. It is an excellent example of pop/rock songwriting. The Chain and Gold Dust Woman are the best of these. Not my cup of tea as a whole, but you have to recognize the result.

Yes it's probably overrated, and the songs are simplistic.   But it's also a great record, and the reason is because of how it sounds.   Like most albums, it's the production, mix, engineering, and studio timbre that makes the difference.

I wouldn't call the Soap Opera Fleetwood over-rated.

If anything I think the Peter Green Fleetwood Mac is over-rated, nowadays. Outside their excellent Then Play On (both US and European version), most of their albums are just average blues-rock albums (don't get me wrong, I love blues rock) with the odd cool hits. Sooo, I can't help but thinking that if FM ever is over-rated in the band's career, it would've been nowadays, when talking of their 68/71 era.

Yup,probably the best-selling Yacht Rock album of all time.

Their previous one (FM) was not nearly as good, and TBH, I always found Tusk a waste of electricity and decibels.

I do not understand. Confused
How is Peter Green era overrated?! The mainstream listener does not even know it exists.
There are FM compilations that only include Steve Nicks era songs.

It's only listeners that are into blues that listen to the Peter Green albums.

You're right! Before I went online in 2010, the only Fleetwood Mac song I'd heard before the Stevie Nicks era was "Albatross", mainly because that's the only Peter Green era Fleetwood Mac song that gets played regularly on the radio. Embarrassed

There are many compilation and archives exploitation discs of the Peter Green-only era.... probably more than the Soap opera years. Wink

As for being over-rated, they can be so within a genre niche (blues-related music), and I think you understimate the PGFM popularity in both classic rock and mainstream. They had many hits in their early days, which are still getting airplay today.

I don't think I underestimate at all. I've seen a couple of docs about FM, and guess which era of the band was praised the most. The Nicks era obviously.

PGFM are only popular for people who like blues. And Peter Green deserves all the appreciation and fame he's got.

I agree, I spin it more than any other album of that era and genre, Eagles Hotel California comes in close 2nd.
Rumours is a brilliant album with amazing song writing by the whole band, and showed how talented they all are especially Stevie Nicks back in '77, what was she like 16yrs old or something LOL.

I have several copies of the album my original version, a Steve Hoffman/Kevin Gray remastered version cut at RTI which is absolutely stunning!! And just picked up a clear LP version pressed at Optimal Media GmbH at Walmart for US$12, such a deal. Sound is not as good as the Hoffman version, but much better than my CD version.

Brilliant album.

Personally I prefer the term over exposed. Tastes may vary regarding how much we all like classic albums but hearing albums too much can help us hate albums that otherwise pretty good. I have to be in the right mood every few years to want to hear this album but still have to admit that it's brilliant pop music

overrated in that the Welch era albums like Bare Trees and especially Future Games were probably better albums..  but it was a great album.. albums do not become overexposed without first being a great album. .see Dark Side of the Moon

and it did have Stevie.. and she alone merits classic status...

and dont you dare diss New Kids...  not only one of the best concerts I ever saw...  probably the best sex i ever had for actually allowing myself to be talked into going to it. An open mind can lead to open legs..  no wonder proggers are such sad souls...

"Go your own way" is one of my favorite FM songs!

Lindsay sings the vocals, I used to think it was Stevie Nicks!  Buckingham is also a hell of a good guitarist.

Rumours is a brilliant album with amazing song writing by the whole band, and showed how talented they all are especially Stevie Nicks back in '77, what was she like 16yrs old or something LOL.

I just read this interesting article about Fleetwood Mac on KOOL.FM today.....

"If you go back to their beginnings, they were a blues band, with the legendary Peter Green on guitar and vocals.  But there's a middle period of time when Fleetwood Mac sounded more like a 'progressive rock' band."

"You may have seen some press in the past week or so about the death of Fleetwood Mac guitarist Bob Weston at the age of 64.  And you probably thought, WHO?  Weston is the inventive guitarist who replaced Peter Green.  His licks are definitely spacey and progressive in sound."

On that basis, I've decided to add Fleetwood Mac to my Prog Britannia YouTube channel. Smile

I have tried, but I can't really get into the in-between period with Bob Welch. It remains a mystery to me.

dear God man...

Weston did not replace Green...  he replaced if can you call it that Danny Kirwan.. and Weston was more noted for the sordid (it was Fleetwood Mac after all) details of his firing that any musical contributions he made for the one album he played with them on.

I barely even recognized the Name Bob Weston, and had to look up his history with the Mac.  Apparently he was only on 2 albums - "Penguin" and "Mystery to Me".  I had forgotten that "Penguin" even existed, and don't think I have ever heard more than a song or two from it, back in the 1970s

Yes...Weston was really nothing to rave about...a mediocre replacement imho.
I recall first hearing someone play Penguin in a billiards hall/pinball arcade in college in late 73 and it was pretty boring for the most part...I bought Mytsery and Heroes later but never got Penguin and still don;t have a copy on vinyl.

Penguin did have probably the single most prog song they ever did, even with the kick ass 'tron, so that makes it a bit of a semi-essential prog curio..

and a great song it was.

but yeah..  it was a strange album.. a real transition .. from Kirwan being a primary songwriter and THE primary musical focus to going to Welch's more jazzy inclinations on those last few albums he was with them.

After hearing songs from the album played relentlessly on the radio during the first summer of its release, I can say today that Rumours would be a much better record if "Go Your Own Way" and "Don't Stop" were replaced with "Silver Springs", the Stevie Nicks song that was relegated to a B-side. (And I say this as someone who tolerates Nicks and considers Lindsey Buckingham a true songwriting genius.)

Also, count me among those people who consider the Tusk album to be an immaculate masterpiece, and the best thing the band has ever done. I would not change one note.

I personally think Stevie Nicks' songs are the most interesting ones on Rumours. Especially "Dreams" where the music fits the mood of the lyrics perfectly. Especially with its tonal unstability, or "uncertainty". You can hear it as switching forth and bach between the subdominant and dominant (except in the instrumental break) without reaching the tonic, and that's quite a daring thing to do. Or as the relatively rare mode of lydian. Or as aeolian with the tonic only appearing in the instrumental break.

It's not overrated in that I haven't seen too many people say it compares to the most influential albums of that decade. Yes, it sold really, really well which was a combination of its accessibility, consistency and production. The least good songs on Rumours are still just insubstantial, not BAD. And it has at least four great tracks - Dreams, Chain, Oh Daddy and Gold Dust Woman. I prefer the live cut of Go Your Own Way which is more rocking.

Personally, I prefer Future Dreams. But Rumours was clearly about a band trying to score a hit without really going THAT commercial (compared to say ABBA or disco). And it achieved that goal splendidly. While it is not a patch on the classic Pink Floyd albums, what it does have in common with them is an edge, a mystery that comes through on tracks like Chains. It's not all sweet candy. It rocks and has a soul.

It's a very good album. It was their DSOTM, I guess in terms of commercial breakthrough and importance in their catalogue, and in defining their sound with Buckingham/Nicks.

I think Tusk is somewhat over praised, usually by people who think Rumours is very overrated, but I've always found it lacking in quality songs.

There's some gems on later albums; Mirage and Tango in the Night. Gypsy is probably my favourite Nicks song. Her performance gives me goosebumps on that track.

Yeah, I think "Tusk" is the more overrated one.. I like "Rumours", and I think it gets a lot of praise because there's no junk on it, but outside of "The Chain" there's nothing GREAT like "Dark Side of the Moon" which is all GREAT.

I totally agree on the overly-long "Tusk" double-album, which would have been much better released as a single album without Lindsey Buckingham's demos recorded in his garage. Confused

As for "Rumours", it's my favourite Fleetwood Mac album and I love all the songs on there, so I don't think it's overrated at all. Thumbs Up

I think behind DSOtM it is the most repressed album of the past 30yrs. You speak to any record store owner and the two records they cite as most regular sellers and consistently top sellers are DSOtM and Rumours.

Listeners, especially the young, are discovering how brilliant both of these albums are every year.

Those are my four favorites, and I'd actually remove one star from Rumours and give it to Mystery to Me. (admittedly it's a weakish four for the latter and a strong one for the former)

If the much superior Silver Springs were on it instead of either of those dime a dozen songs Don't Stop or I Don't Want to Know - I'd rate it a five.

Is it really such a mystery I find those two mentioned songs pretty dull and mediocre (they obviously are), and that the album would be better had they chosen the gorgeous Silver Springs over any of them? Stevie Nicks certainly agrees with me, as she eventually quit the band (years later) because her song was dropped.

I've never purchased it mainly because I've heard many of the songs so many times so don't see the point. I doubt it's overrated but it's comfortable mainstream rock/pop for people that don't want too much in the way of challenging music. It's not boring though as the songs are unique and different.

I don't want to know is comfortably the most dispensable, disposable song on that album.  I am not very much fond of Don't Stop but it was undeniably a hit. And again, nothing wrong as such with the song.  That's the thing with Rumours overall.  The touches of then contemporary pop/rock sensibilities in songs like Dreams or You Make Loving Fun is very tasteful while songs like Second Hand News just hew towards more traditional genres.  It's like a gateway folk-rock album with pop-rock touches.

Yes, and I still love the album (and never actually wrote that I considered it to be overrated), but the last three minutes of this are among my favorite three minutes of Fleetwood Mac.

I think all of their albums are quite patchy really. But at their best their best - they are the best (in popular music).

I don't want to know is comfortably the most dispensable, disposable song on that album.  I am not very much fond of Don't Stop but it was undeniably a hot.

Yes, I do agree that it would have been a much better track to have than either Don't Stop or I don't want to know.  I think it was a bit of a Genesis like situation - too many good songwriters and not enough songs to accommodate everyone and with Lindsey somewhat hogging up the credits.
