Here it is poll # 15!
I was thinking what rules to have here but I'll just have one: NO BIG HITS please.
Have fun with this, this is a tap your foot, dance in the living room round.
I'll post some songs later today, I haven't even finished my morning coffee!

Oh nice, catchy things!
In the surprise, surprise poll I already talked about De Staat. A Dutch band with a batch of catchy songs. Difficult to choose one of them, so to give myself time to choose. I offer you two, for the moment.
Contrary to what the title might suggest, the first one is all but dull : De Staat - All is Dull
And a second one: De Staat - Blues is Dead (Hip Hip Hooray ! )
Another Dutch artist with a fun one : Fay Lovsky and her band La Bande Dessinée. Fay Lovsky is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist known worldwide in the Netherlands. But here the song comes originally from the New York State Department of Safety.
Fay Lovsky & La bande dessinée - In the Middle, In the Middle
And a last one, a French one: Calogero who plays music on "Je joue de la musique". It was actually a modest hit here in France, but I suppose you don't know it. And it seems catchy to me.
Calogero - Je joue de la musique
-------------

What does no big hits mean? That they must not have been on the charts anywhere? Or can a song participate if for instance it was a hit in its home country but not elsewhere?

Right. So here are my candidates:
Shugo Tokumaru - Katachi
Shugo Tokumaru is from Japan.
And here: Jarboli - Nista
Jarboli is a great band from Serbia which I discovered some years ago.
PS: It's a bit hard to share something from Denmark at the moment, because Google has decided to block Danish music on YouTube due to disagreements with Koda, the Danish copyright organization, about the license fee they have to pay.

There are so many that I could post here, but I picked some that I didn't think would fit in other categories that might come up. I was all ready to post one by Yello ("Angel No"), but I noticed that I Prophesy Disaster already posted one, so that took care of on of my many options. In the end, I had 6 left that I just didn't have the heart to not post, so, here are mine:
Glassmoon - "You Turn My World Around" This is a band that I love that had 3 albums and never quite made it for reasons I don't understand.
Eye to Eye - "Mermaid Man" Yes, this band sounds like Steely Dan, except with a female vocalist. I do believe that Donald Fagen is playing the keys on this one, and the Pocaro brothers (from "Toto) were also involved.
Gorillaz - "19-2000 (Soulchild Remix)" This band is a guilty pleasure of mine that didn't make the cut for that particular poll.
My Morning Jacket - "Holding on to Black Metal" I have two bands/artists that I follow religiously: Jim James from My Morning Jacket (who qualifies) and Steven Wilson from Porcupine Tree (who doesn't qualify here). I know they are completely different, but they both belong to a lot of different projects.
Status Quo - "Slow Train" I couldn't resist putting this one here. This is the one that always gets me dancing around on my chair. Turn it up and rock out!
Geggy Tah - "Go" This is one more for the Panheads, yet it has an infectious sound that is quite catchy.

OK, going to the 80's/90's here, for things I thought should have been way bigger than they were.
First, Loud Sugar with "Instant Karma Coffee House"
Second, a relative of The Waterboys, World Party's "All Come True"
Rare change of heart, I'm switching my third one to this, Better Than Ezra's "In The Blood" (I'll save the lovely Sam Phillips for another poll)

It’s Catchy! Notes
This one, for me, means I haven’t heard it before, and I find my mind
wandering to something about in later on, whether a hooky chorus, vibe or
instrumental hook. Initial thoughts
follow.
Cristi: Sonata
Arctica “Cold” Straight ahead-type accessible metal band, decent singer band
looks right for this visually. A-ha
“Don’t Do Me Any Favours” Has that a-ha sound, certainly, tight pop outfit,
with some musical hooks, classic “song” structure. Kingdom Come “Mad Queen” Metal/hard rock band
here, another classic structure-type song, but dressed in metal clothes this
time. Testament “The Legacy” Starts off darkly heavy, bluesy ballad style
song, then grows into harder-edged and some guitar pyrotechnics. Diary of Dreams “Dream of a Ghost” Spooky
start, then speeds up with some waves of synth sounds and synth vocals. Feeling of hopelessness in the lyrics, kind
of a sci-fi vibe. IRIS “Ploaia de
Vise” Straight-ahead rock here from
Eastern Europe, sounds like…Hits all the straight-ahead rock notes.
Rosu si Negru “Cu fiecare vis”Straight ahead again, Eastern Europe again?
but with a lighter, yet more produced sound than IRIS.
Lorenzo:
Modena City Ramblers “Il ritorno di Paddy Garcia” A bit of a romp, makes
me think of “Poncho & Lefty,” for some reason. RAF “Oggi un Dio Non ho” Pretty ballad-type song, very smooth vocals,
nice arrangement. Paola Turci “Volo Cosi”
Another ballad, but of a different type, at least to my ear. Builds nicely, very passionate vocal.
I prophesy disaster: Yello “Domingo” Heavy electronic
sound, pretty ominous sounding to my ear.
The repetitive hook of the keys is pretty catchy.
Suitkees: De Staat “All is Dull” Liked this beginning,
those kinda wonky guitars…these guys are just terminally bored and it’s quite
funny. Then “Blues Is Dead” These guys
do make me laugh, pretty good novelty stuff.
Fay Lovsky “The the Middle, In the Middle” sounds kind of like Doris Day on speed. 😊
Calogero “Je joue de la musique”
They are obsessed! This one I
like the best of these, although Fay Lovsky was fun, for the novelty aspect.
The Dark Elf:
The Waterboys “Be My Enemy” Oh, I
love The Waterboys. Great song and great
band. Young Dubliners “Rocky Road to
Dublin” Trad song done as a rocker, another
great choice for catchy. This is a great
version. Gogol Bordello “Start Wearing
Purple” These guys are fun, too. Novelty can certainly be catchy.
The Anders:
Shugo Tokumaru “Kitachi” Don’t
know what they’re singing about, but cute, poppy song. And engaging video. Jarboli “Nista” Again, no idea what the song is about, but
there’s a feeling of futility in it to me, the treadmill of daily life,
perhaps.
TCat:
Glassmoon “You Turn My World Around”
Enjoyed this one, I agree, in it’s time, should have been a hit
song. Eye to Eye “Mermaid Man” Yep, definitely that Steely Dan vibe….and
definitely also catchy. Gorillaz “19-2000
(Soulchild Remix). You’ve definitely got
an ear for what I think of as catchy, very poppy-catchy, this one. My Morning Jacket “Holding On To Black Metal”
Has some cool punctuation by the horns and the verbal choruses are very
hooky. Status Quo “Slow Train” Here’s a band I actually saw live! Video link didn’t work for me (odd) but I
found an HQ version on YT. I remember
this one from back in the day. Geggy Tah
“Go” Love the cover. This one just might
win for the sheer quirkiness.

I'll start with a few songs from one band that came to mind for me when it comes to catchy, indie pop rockers Imperial Teen. Led by Faith No More keyboardist Roddy Bottum, but not sounding anything like them. They've been around since the mid 90's, having released 6 albums.
You're One
From their debut album. Got some decent airplay on the alt rock station where I was in the late 90s.
Yoo Hoo
From their second album and in the movie Jawbreaker. The video was done in conjunction with the movie with Rose McGowan as her character from the movie.
Everything
From their fourth album after a five-year break. Album title is "The Hair the TV the Baby and the Band" explains what they did during their break. One band member was a hairdresser, another wrote TV soundtracks, and another had a baby.
Out From Inside
From their fifth album after another five-year break.

I don't know any Japanese or Serbian either, but I found the original Serbian lyrics to "Nista". When Google-translating them to English, it looks like this. How correct it is, I can't really tell, but Google Translate is not flawless:
It shrinks slowly It nests in thick hair It leaks from the ceiling, drains behind the closet I sink slowly Like it's nothing to me And the world is in front of me for about two to four hours The day has not yet begun
It is heard in the voice It can be seen in the movements I would like to swallow everything, everything to stay in me He is hiding in the dark It can be heard from another apartment The world is in front of me for about two to four hours The day has not yet begun
Nothing like a man Able to hate others And he is ready to be everything he despises in them
Plug your ears And find a reason to love each other If you can
Close your eyes And say what you really want To see
As for "Katachi", I found this translation: http://lyricstranslate.com/en/katachi-shape.html" rel="nofollow - http://lyricstranslate.com/en/katachi-shape.html

Definitely at least got the idea from the feeling of the song ("Nista")....Yeah, sometimes the translations are strange. I have a Japanese friend who is completely fluent in English, he can even do puns and such....however, when I use a translate app for some of his postings into English, it doesn't seem the same as what he writes or posts in English, himself. Thank you for finding the lyrics.

More thoughts, with some more from George and new additions from Scott and Dr wu23.
George: Tygers of Pan Tang “Hellbound” begins with a riff to
catch the ear, heavy vocals and some flashy guitar playing follow.L.A Guns “Never Enough”Definitely one of the darlings of the L.A.
hair metal scene when I was living/working there, all over KNAC radio.Band-Maid “Thrill” Kind of novelty metal with
their look.Pretty hooky stuff in this
vein.
Scott: Slave Raider “Make Some Noise” Definitely more of the hair/glam kind of
stuff that was the 80’s scene in LA.
Loudness “Crazy Nights” The Japanese spin on glam/heavy metal. Marshall stacks, too! Certainly catchy for that style, on both fronts.
Dr wu23: Enter
the Haggis “Casualties of Retail” I have
heard of them (love the name!) but had never heard them before. Not a fan of haggis itself, but this one is
probably going to keep coming back to my mind. Always up for a new Celtic twist. 😊 Shoes “Tomorrow Night” And now for something
completely different (than Enter the Haggis).
Kind of pop-ish, like the jangly guitars and smooth vocals. Tonio K. “The Funky Western Civilization” More
in the vein of the metal/glam stuff previously with a touch of Jerry Lee Lewis
goes punk, twangly wangly guitars and saxes.

Well ... since we were allowed non-Prog songs ... guilty as charged
The bass really gets popping at the end. Whew!!! I suddenly have an urge to find a roller skating rink.
I think the "It's ..." is implied for the name of the song ... if you need one that starts with an "i"
That bass harmonic at 4:59 is perfect!

Actually, the rules are must be a non-PA artist....Starting with an "I" is not required, but an interesting way to think of it. Just no big hits, either, as per Cristi, the OP here. Most of these have been up to 3 to nominate, you choose one before the voting begins of your own, then everyone votes for their Top 3 of those nominations. You can choose to discuss if you wish.

Here are some British bands that came up at about the same time to redefine Indie music, and they have some very very addictive stuff, a stunning reservoir of catchiness. It's difficult enough to settle on one song of any of these, so at least I'll play all the bands to you.
Foals have at the very least half a dozen insanely catchy songs that shout "nominate me!" at me. Here's Exit.
Bombay Bicycle Club - Always Like It
Two Door Cinema Club are surely not the leaders of that pack, but I Can Talk is irresistible.
Last not least here are the sophisticated and tricky Everything Everything - Spring Sun Winter Dread

I don't know if that song was a big hit or not. It's "Just a Groove" I heard a long time ago and got stuck in my head for 40 years. I guess that qualifies for the "catchy" part.

Well, it's really Cristi's rules for this one...but was going over what we've typically done....So the big no-no was no big hits. And since it's in the non-prog section, no one who's a PA artist.

Same here. I knew "Oh Yeah" before it was a big hit and loved that entire album. It seems I still find new things about it everytime I listen to it, and I have become a huge Yello fan because of it. Love all of their music even though I'm not as familiar with their last two albums, I have heard them and think their just as good as the other albums I'm more familiar with. My reactions to the first set of songs:
Sonata Arctica –
Cold
Melodic ”soft
metal” (since I am not so much into metal, I don’t know what the
correct subgenre would be if there is one). Fine song, but it’s not
so much my taste. I had to listen to it on Spotify because the
YouTube clip is blocked in my country.
A-ha – Don’t Do
Me Any Favours
I only really know
A-ha for Take On Me, so the sound of this one is surprising to
me. It's quite melancholic; a bit singer/songwriter-like
perhaps. Nice song.
Kingdom Come – Mad
Queen
Sounds rather
80’s-like to me, especially with the drum sound and the keyboards.
Listening to it halfway I think I expected an Eddie Van Halen type of
guitar solo, but the one that comes is more laid back. Still very
80’s sounding. Fine song again, but not something I would normally
listen to.
Testament – The
Legacy
Driven by
chorus-fueled guitar, this one is very much a product of it’s time:
the very early 90’s, just before grunge blew hair metal away (so
the story is written). There’s a sort of mix between the more
stripped down sound aesthetics of the 90’s on one side, and a very
80’s sound lead guitar on the other side. Quite an interesting
combination actually.
Diary of Dreams -
Dream of a Ghost
Now a complete
change of style - at least on a superficial level - towards synth
pop. The mood, on the other hand, is more like that of the previous
songs (melancholic and in minor). The vocals remind me of David Bowie
who must have been a source of inspiration somehow. Interesting
track.
Iris – Ploaia de
Vis
The song is from
1988, but it actually sounds a lot older, especially considering the
production: the drum sound in particular is more like late 70’s and
early 80’s. They keyboard riff is more mid-80’s to me though. A
bit punky. Very unpolished in any case. Personally I find it a bit
monotonus. What language are they singing in?
Rosu si Negru – Cu
fiecare vis
Guess this is from
the 80’s too. There was quite a lot of music in Denmark with a
similar sound from that period. Despite being a little boy in that
period, it never really became a sound I could identify with. The
massive quitar ”orchestration” towards the end reminds me of
Queen.

I took notes.
Sonata Arctica: I’d say more melodic than catchy to me.
a-ha: “Yes it’s alright” I found it melancholic.
Kingdom Come: Is this the same band that came out in the late 80’s sounding like they were trying to rip off Led Zep and Whitesnake? Here they sound like the Scorpions to me.
Testament: I remember these guys. Alex Skolnick’s non-jazz band.
Diary of Dreams: Very electronic/dance-ish. Reminiscent of 80’s synth /goth.
IRIS: Anthemic rocker. I think this would fit in to one of those uplifting montages in an 80’s comedy. Where at the end of the montage the protagonist would pump his or her fist in the air and then it would freeze in timing with the end of the song.
Rosu si Negru: This also sounds like it should be part of an 80’s soundtrack. Maybe as the intro to a TV show.
Of all those, I like IRIS the best, although Rosu si Negru is quite catchy to me. Funny that I have no idea what either song is about.

I do like my novelties.

They have been around for 7 years and have released on April 1st in 2018 and 2019 recordings under the name Band-Maiko (a maiko is an apprentice geisha) in full get up.
By the way, did you have any thoughts on Imperial Teen? They are my main selection (with likely the first song). I had posted the hard rock ones for fun.
Whoops! I accidentally skipped the first part of my thoughts on yours, George and moved right on to the second part.
Here, is my initial impressions of Imperial Teen and L.A. Guns:
Tygers of Pan Tang “Hellbound” begins with a riff to
catch the ear, heavy vocals and some flashy guitar playing follow.L.A Guns “Never Enough”Definitely one of the darlings of the L.A.
hair metal scene when I was living/working there, all over KNAC radio.
Thanks also for the Band-Maiko song. I love the beauty of the traditional Japanese costuming and the culture (no thanks, foot binding, of course) of the calligraphy, tea ceremony, and their musical heritage. Fun to see them rock it up.

Sorry, I blew that AGAIN! Too much going back and forth to find what else I may have missed. And thank you for the playlist. Here goes: (Jeeze, maybe I need a second cup of coffee):
George:Imperial
Teen “You’re One”Nice classic
intro!I liked the Alt Rock era a
lot.Looking forward to hearing the
other ones by this configuration” Yoo Hoo” Very catchy and a funny video, looks
like a San Fernando Valley house (and likely was).“Everything” I liked the male and female
vocals mixing with this one.“Out From

sometimes in between their records.Why
didn’t these guys get more love from radio?Catchy indeed, all around.

Initial impressions on Jaketejas and Lewian:
Jaketejas:
Glen Adams Affair “Just a Groove”
You definitely got the general idea.
You can do more than one, and vote for up to 3, once voting begins. First disco entry of the bunch and pretty
catchy, too.
Lewian: Pinback “Tripoli” Nice sort of an almost round, with layered
vocals, repetitive background that changes just enough to keep interest. Kind of dark humour in the lyrics. A different feel than most here, as expected,
also fits the bill, as I’ve come to expect from your entries. Nik Kershaw “These Tears” Well crafted pop material, as one would
expect from Nik Kershaw. Foals “Exits” I like the bell-like almost oriental keys
repeating and the backwards (?) keys or guitars, not sure what it is, but nice
effect and catchy. Bombay Bicycle Club “Always
Like It” This one has one of those guys
who are sort of doing that biting off enunciation that is very popular. I like the bouncy little guitar thing going
on and the punch drums and bass with it.
Two Door Cinema Club “I Can Talk” Shimmery start, then lyrics start with
some nice layering to them….the chorus is definitely catchy. I prefer this vocal to the Bombay Bicycle Club
guy, both are kind of “talky,” but am not a big fan of the bitten off words
thing. Everything Everything “Spring Sun
Winter Dread” A song of wanting eternal youth…sorry, guy, it’s gonna happen (if
you’re lucky) pretty passionate vocals.
I could see this being a teen anthem, certainly.

Casualties of Retail and Soapbox Heroes are both very good LP's. Gutter Anthems is good also...a band that never really found a large enough audience.
All of their music is melodic and 'catchy' to me....albeit from a modern Celtic rock pov.

Kind of pop-ish, like the jangly guitars and smooth vocals. Tonio K. “The Funky Western Civilization” More
in the vein of the metal/glam stuff previously with a touch of Jerry Lee Lewis
goes punk, twangly wangly guitars and saxes.
I urge everyone to listen on you tube to the whole Tonio K lp...Life In The Food Chain...lots of fun...very clever lyrics, and a cross between Warren Zevon, Graham Parker, and J Geils band. I'm surprised he didn't become a big star,...very catchy rock tunes.

Thanks snicolette for feedback; chances are I won't be able to comment on everything. I heard a few and I must say, catchy means different things to different people... From those I have heard, I'd probably put Yello first.

You had said that you were busy this week...Yes, "catchy" is kind of like "guilty pleasure." Lots of things make something catchy. This time around I thought of what I felt should have been bigger hits and weren't and concentrated on an era.
Foals and Pinback, both had a repetitive thing going, I think I personally liked Foals better, but I am certainly no expert! Foals just suited my taste better, which is probably a death-knell for what could be popular, lol!

The Iris song is rather ambiguous lyrically, harmless, the title means "the rain of dreams" so one interpretation is it's chase your dreams kind of song. It's ambiguous and harmless because they had to watch out in those days of bleak communism, what they say lyrically, censors would ban an artist for ridiculous reasons often (and Iris, without even trying to be rebels, for lack of a better word, were banned three times in the 80s, their popularity among teens of the times bothered the system as well).
The Rosu si Negru song is just a love song. Released if I remember right in 1988 as well.

Today I listened through the playlist and I will give some general impressions (there are too many songs to comment them all...). First, I think there is some confusion between" up-tempo" and "catchy", but please (no, please...) don't ask me to define "catchy".
I liked most of the songs put up here. There are some rock-ballads, some beautiful songs, some real surprises, and a few real catchy songs, to my ears. Some tracks that were good surprises to me (Jarboli, Paola Turci, Eye to Eye), some good songs, but not necessarily of the catchy kind (Raf - very romantic-, Nik Kershaw, Portishead, Loud Sugar, Pinback...), some good (hard) rock (with a nod to BAND-MAID and the party-rock of Slave Raider, when it comes to the catchy kind), some catchy songs that make you want to be in a pub with a beer in the hand (Modena Ramblers, Young Dubliners, Enter the Haggis - but these last deserve better than that), and some real catchy songs. Of the catchy kind I note Rosu si Negru, Gogol Bordello (I love this one!), Gorillaz (they were made to be catchy...), Everything Everything and Imperial Teen (very much like both You're One and Everything - kind of King Missile meet The Kinks (or something).
Too much to see straight But I'm waiting for more and for the nominations !

Throughout the week, I've managed to listen to all of the postings and found that everyone posted a personal favorite that I really liked, but most of them ended up not being picked, strangely enough. So, here are my top three:
1. Jarboli - "Nista"
2. Enter the Haggis - "Gasoline"
3. Loud Sugar - "Instant Karma Coffee House"
Runners up were Paola Turci (it was very good, but not what I consider catchy), Salada de Frutas (it was vying for #3, but was barely pushed out of the top 3).
The ones that I like a lot but were not picked for voting were Calogero, Band-Maid, Tonio K. and Two Door Cinema Club. Any of those could have been in my top 3.

It was a nice selection, again. Thanks to everyone!
Of the nominations I very much liked the songs of Paola Turci, Eye to Eye and Jarboli, but the most catchy in my ears that I liked too are those by Imperial Teen (the most catchy one - and not only You're One...), Glen Adams Affair (catchy AND groovy!) and Enter the Haggis (folky AND catchy)!
Edit: Ow, I notice we only have one vote...?!

The opposite here. Now listening to the final playlist (thanks mathman, super helpful as always!) it strikes me as pretty good overall with lots of things that can "catch" me; when listening earlier to something like a random third of what had been nominated before, I was rather underwhelmed.

^^ Yes, and ^^^ yes. Multiple votes has not been enabled for this poll yet. Perhaps Cristi is still waiting to finalise that and voting has not yet formally commenced. His last message is "we got 15 songs so far".
I had a listen to all of the nominated songs, but haven't made up my mind yet. This is one where I haven't been keen on most of the music, but maybe things will grow on me with a second spin. My choice seems a bit odd with the others, but I do like some contrast. I had planned to mention a couple others depending on what people said about my "Sour Times" choice. I am more of a down-tempo (or downer) kind of guy.
I almost went with this since it's more traditionally catchy:
But since I included that in a recent poll of mine, I opted not to.

But since I included that in a recent poll of mine, I opted not to.[/QUOTE] I do find "Sour Times," the most catchy of all, truly. Especially because, the first time I heard it, some years ago, I made sure to seek out who that was. But you know my personal rule, I am looking for catchiest I'm not familiar with. I, too, love those minor key, sad and dark pieces of music.

Well that's good to hear. "Sour Times" is catchy to me, but I thought that others might question that. Catchiness can be in the ear of the behearer. I don't think I would have changed my nomination had anyone objected, unless it was because it was considered too well-known. I didn't really get to know it until quite recently -- when I discovered the 90s "Blue Jam" radio black comedy and music series. Longtime admirer of Chris Moris, but it took a comedy podcast I listen to (The Rule of Three) to get me to listen to Blue Jam, which got me to listen to "Sour Times". I love that kind of associative discovery process.

That Portishead song I know very well, too well actually. I like it, but given that I heard this X times and there is some stuff that is just as good, votes are for the new discoveries.
At the moment I can only say that the winner is that Jarboli thing, surely the most intense, and combining that with catchiness is no small feat. (Not sure whether I have anything from Serbia in my collection.)
Other candidates, but I still have to pick my 2 and 3: Yello, De Staat, Imperial Teen, the Mermaid Man (I wouldn't call that catchy, but it's big fun). I'm not going to vote for Slave Raider, not my kind of style really, but I actually like this one, and "Get together and make some noise" is surely my favourite song message. Hard to capture better what life is about.

My top 3:
1. George: Imperial
Teen “You’re One” Nice classic
intro! I liked the Alt Rock era a
lot. Love this kind of poppy yet not actually quite-as-sweet as the era it sort of emulates band. Still wondering why they weren't a bigger hit in that era.
2. Dr
wu23: Enter the Haggis “Casualties of Retail” I have heard of them (love the name!) but had
never heard them before. Not a fan of
haggis itself, but this one is probably going to keep coming back to my
mind. Always up for a new Celtic twist.
3. Lewian: Foals “Exits” I like the bell-like almost oriental keys
repeating and the backwards (?) keys or guitars, not sure what it is, but nice
effect and catchy.
Honorable Mention: I don't even like disco, but this was an earworm, nonetheless.
Jaketejas: Glen
Adams Affair “Just a Groove” You
definitely got the general idea. First disco entry of the bunch and pretty
catchy, too.

Imperial teen- You're One.....always liked what I call 'power pop'...and they fit that niche for me even though they aren't quite as hard edged as some others.
Instant Karma Coffee House- Loud Sugar.....different but cool music....not sure what to call it but it was fun and clever....liked the vocals and lyrics.
