Subject: Interactive Poll

Hello boys and girls.
This is an interactive poll.
If you want to join us,
1) write the name of a song (not here in PA: not prog or proto-prog or prog-related) and the name of the authors
2) the link of youtube
I'll add your song to the poll. We can arrive up to 15 songs.
When we have a definitive list of songs to vote for, each of us will vote for his three favourite songs (but first you have to listen to them! You don't vote at random! ;-))
------------- Amos Goldberg (professor of Genocide Studies at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem): Yes, it's genocide. It's so difficult and painful to admit it, but we can no longer avoid this conclusion.

Cool idea! Is it enough if the song is not listed on PA, or should it not be prog related in any way? I'm toying around with the idea of nominating one from a solo album of the bassist of a well reputed prog band that isn't prog and isn't listed here, but isn't really unrelated either. Can do something else of course but that song just smiled at me.

THE SHOES: Time is What I Need
Not a Prog, Prog-Related or Proto-Prog band. Nevertheless, this 1969 song, that I always have returned to during some 46 years, is one of the best Proto-Prog songs I have ever heard.

Hi,
Removed ... not interested in the poll with the incorrect spirit .... I posted something because that "style" has never really been developed and it was because of one person or two, and Guru Guru happens to be a part of it, but Uli did a lot of shows on his own by himself.
Lost interest in the poll due to fascist opinions!

Hi,
A lot of things I want to add here, but Uli Trepte probably deserves a bit more history and appreciation, although some of the reviews simply want to hear ... just another song ... and the early days of Uli and then band Guru Guru were anything but about a "song" ... it was all a monster trip!
I still find this incredible, and along with YETI, and TAGO MAGO, probably the best and most incredible albums of those days and its history ... incredible work and concentration on getting these things done, and how they came out. There is another version on a Live CD from 1971, I think, that is even better.
I'm not sure that this could be done with another bass player or guitar person ... and there are no words for Mani's performances in those days.
This is the kind of thing that most bands are afraid of ... music that goes ... heaven knows where, but lives so beautifully ... no lyrics necessary!
we're expected to post a song from a band not featured on PA, or non-prog, or have I misunderstood?
so your band does not qualify if I am right...

Hi,
Removed ... the posting was more about the style that was never really developed because too many "fans" think they own the music!
I have about 15 things I wanted to post, but thought something that is left behind, and much more important would make better sense ... I've totally lost interest ... and I was invited. Sorry JB

I was going to suggest Nick Drake's "River Man",but while not in PA, I do consider it to be Prog Folk related. If you think that fits, you can add it.
Otherwise, Cat Stevens "Trouble" is a favourite of mine and I would just as happily see that as my choice (even if Cat Stevens is rather Prog Folk related).
Perhaps my link should be direct off Mona Bone Jakon, but to me that song is so heavily associated with Harold & Maude and that makes it so poignant to me.

Moshkito,
The spirit of this interactive poll is that PA members will be able to listen to one of our favorite songs they probably don't know (that's why I said not to choose prog/proto-prog/progrelated song here in PA).
And then to vote, and see who gets the most votes.
It's a way to share some of our favorite songs. Maybe someone will discover some artists he didn't know and who might like them very much.

Yes, wonderful song!
There are a lot of beautiful songs here.

I must say I have really enjoyed listening to every single one of these selections. I think we should continue this thread after the first fifteen are voted on. I know I would keep contributing as there are a lot of artists putting out exceptional music that typically get ignored, and since we all love prog, we can all benefit from hearing what other PA members love that isn't progressive.
I vote we continue these polls! Hopefully we can get others interested.

Interesting thread and tracks.......
I'm a big fan of early west coast folk/psych/country/blues rock...bands like Buffalo Springfield, CSN, Poco, Kak, early Grateful Dead, etc...and these guys ..2 remarkable lp's...imho....maybe this will fit in an eclectic list.
They also did more folky blues things but they could really rock. (IMHO The Eagles stole their sound....made it more commercial and became rich)
Enjoy...

You vote for your top 3. Presumably, that will include your own track, but not necessarily. I'm guessing that most people will vote that way, anyway. Some people have even preemptively voted for their own track.

Yeah, 15 seemed to me as betting a bit too much on loads of people turning up in this non-prog area of the forum, and also, as good as listening to new music always is, I find the time to go through 10 much easier than through 15.

I'd be more comfortable not voting for my nomination and planned not to vote for it. That would be rather to much liking voting for myself for my comfort. It's enough for me that I mentioned it and it was included -- that's a kind of vote in and of itself. That said, non like-minded individuals might find it demotivating.
15 may be a bit ambitious, not really for me. I wouldn't promise to listen to every track fully from start to finish. If something seems obviously anathema to my ears, I'll listen to enough bits of it at least to feel like I "get" the song. I'm already checking out other people's music, getting a feel for it, and so come voting day, I won't have to spend so long revisiting the music.

Start it when you like.
I have a bit of a problem, even excusing my own, there's too much I really like that's been mentioned. Just choosing three would be hard, but I guess that's the challenge.
So aside from the Nick Drake (since I won't vote for my own choice), loved:
CSI: L'ora delle tentazioni The Shoes: Time is What I Need Foals: Heavy Water Ratso: I Want Everything (ft. Yasmine Hamdan) Parliament: Mothership Connection Anna & Elizabeth: Little Black Train The Illinois Speed Press: Beauty Lambchop: Up With People
Favouring that which is newer to me, so maybe so far: Lambchop (very much what I've been into of late), the Anna & Elizabeth is awesome, and my third is undecided -- maybe CSI: L'ora delle tentazioni, but the Ratso is kind of what I've been into of late.
Will see if there are other choices, and maybe my choices will shift.
EDIT: I do hope you do another one soon, this is an enjoyable exercise for me. I love topics where we listen to each other choices and hear new to us music (something I've often tried for but rarely accomplished it well with my own topics). I do rather wish I'd been a little more "out there" with my choice as so may already know Nick Drake, I've mentioned it so many times, and it feels like a safe choice. I don't treat such things as contests.

I'm pretty sure politicians vote for themselves. Anyway, it is not my intention to automatically vote for my nomination, but rather to vote for the three I like best, even if that doesn't include my nomination. But I do think that imposing not voting for your own nomination as a rule would be demotivating.

Politicians do. I am not a politician, and as a general rule I do not respect politicians (there have been individuals who are politicians that I do respect). While I would not find it demotivating, various others might. There's more than enough that I like in the list that I would feel no need to vote for my own. By the way, because I don't like to treat such things as contests, I don't care which gets more votes. I rarely vote in my own polls even when I have a favourite, but then I tend to be more interested in people's impressions of the music than just how they vote.

If our own selection is one of the three preferred tracks, then why not vote for it? But if we are honest with ourselves, and it turns out that there are three tracks that are preferable to our own, then we would not vote for our own selection. In other words, it should not be assumed that we would vote for our own selection, and that whether we do or don't should be an option that allows us to state our true opinion.

One can always express one's "true" opinion in a post. For instance, I might say, "My actual favourite, quite unsurprisingly, is the one that I nominated for the poll, but of the other choices my three favourites are x, y, and z. and so those are the three that I voted for." There's nothing disingenuous about that.
I'm hoping that people will say a little about their impressions of the music when it comes to their selections (why they chose what, what appealed about the music...).

That the voting begins!
Please choose three songs, no less and no more.
(Since someone has already voted for the song he has proposed (and there is nothing wrong), it is possible to vote for his own song. In the next poll I would suggest putting as a rule not to do it (I should have specified it immediately also for this topic but I forgot to write it immediately)).
So, after listening to the 14 songs, we can vote for our three favorites.
Members who have not proposed any song are also invited to vote.
I would ask you to write down your three preferences, and if you want, to specify what you like in the songs you have chosen.

Well, there were some excellent posts here and it was definitely a lot harder to pick out favorites than I had originally thought it would be. So, everything was great, but after listening many times, I voted for these three:
Hattler: Assalamu Alaikum - I was immediately drawn to this track mostly because of the great vocalist, the catchy and infectious rhythm and the guitar work.
The Illinois Speed Press: Beauty - I love this west-coast sound. I had never heard of this band and must say that I was really impressed with this. It was like hearing the authentic sound of "Buffalo Springfield" discovered in a forgotten track.
CSI: L'ora delle tentazioni - I must thank Lorenzo for posting this. I have this thing for beautiful and emotional Italian music like this and the fact that they can always make it sound new and exciting everytime is amazing. It's always great when I can hear something new like this.

All great choices and listening to them all at different time of the night and day when I felt different I changed my mind a few times. In the end I came to these 3 tracks:
Lambchop - Up with People
Loved this track from the outset as I had never heard it before. The intro was so cool then vocally with a kind of John Martyn/Robert Plant mixed feel. Quite current in style too even for the early 2000s. A nice overall groove and subtle backing vocals with a great brass section.
Foals: Heavy Water
Took me back to the late 80s early 90s for some reason but I especially liked the middle part of the tune and again, I loved the small brass section towards the end and the whole smoothness but jerky accents in the song structure.
Nick Drake: Riverman
Thoughtful and dreamy and would do well on my playlist. Melancholic but soothing, and very much iconic of the late 60s where being a poet with a guitar was the thing to be. The English Tim Buckley.
------------- I'm sorry, if you were right, I'd agree with you. Robin Williams.

Just three is hard.
Lambchop - "Up With People". I really loved this one, and also loved it from the outset not having heard it before. I love this sort of laid back but interesting and kind of quirky, mellow, chamber pop, countryish brass with some gospel vibe, and this is the kind of thing I have been very into of late. I'm definitely going to be checking out more of this band. It left me feeling great.
Ratso - "I Want Everything" (ft. Yasmine Hamdan). I'm not good at describing music, but again, this sort of alternative vibe is just the kind of music that I've been digging of late. I like that mellow and gruff vibe. Very nice. Musically, it remind me a bit of the Rolling Stones "Miss You".
Foals - "Heavy Water". Very much what I'm in the mood for right now. Great Indie-Rock punkish/ ska-like sound. I like the jagged and smoothe qualities. It remind me of some Fripp music. Love the brass accents.
CSI: L'ora delle tentazioni and Anna & Elizabeth's Little Black Train I had thought I might go for too, but those other three just fit my vibes well at the moment. I really liked most of the music that was posted, so thanks to everyone who participated.

Hi,
Heard them all ...
Nice to watch Helmut Hattler ... although I'm not sure this is his best stuff.
Luna Amara ... very enjoyable.
Sonia Dada ... crazy stuff ... strong.
Ratso ... nice to see someone else not try to be cool and sing. Very nice song.
Parliament ... still a very enjoyable listen.
Nick Drake ... 'nough said ... always good.
Illinois Speed Press ... heard them in Madison, and I think they were in that huge concert near Green Bay ... have to check!
Lambchop ... still resonates after all these years ... wonderful stuff and more folks need to do this these days.

I won't vote for my own, and neither will I vote for Foals. Big fan here, but somehow this song for me isn't among their best, and also it'd block a vote for stuff that I wasn't that familiar with before.
Nick Drake - I heard this one before but it didn't hit me as it has done today. Absolutely great!
CSI - Great very special emotional music.
Luna Amara - very charming songwriting.
Shoes - Anna & Elizabeth - Lambchop not far behind, and I actually enjoyed all of them. Respect mosh for coming back! Let's keep this going!

-Nick Drake- Riverman....been a fan for a long time....love his music.
-The Shoes- Time .... not aware of them..thought it was the American power pop band from the 70's
like this psychy rock song
-Ides Of March-Vehicle.....being from the Chicago area I'm very familiar with them and always liked this track
All the songs were interesting but I tend to like more trad sounds which is why i chose those three.

My choices:
I like very very much:
1) SONIA DADA: JUNGLE. This is a truly contemporary, syncretic fusion song (funk, rap, heavy metal), with a stinging but very refined sound and an exceptional performance. Enhtralling and surprising. MASTERPIECE
2) LUNA AMARA: DEAD ENDS. Rock ballad dominated by the wonderful voice of the singer, and by the melody of the trumpet. It is a traditional pop-rock song, verse-refrain, which manages to get the best out of the arrangement and emphatic interpretation of the singer. The engaging emotional side is essential to appreciate it. I like it very much. ALMOST MASTERPIECE.
Then... it's not easy to choose between OTHER two "almost masterpiece" that I like very much.
- Nick Drake: Riverman. Poignant, simple song, all based on melody. But this is the typical song that I call inspired and immediate, because it touches the strings of your heart. Drake's voice is perfectly suited to the mood of the song and the arrangement with the strings, very creative, raises the quality of the song.
- Freak Kitchen: Porno Daddy. Heavy metal arrangement, with very fast guitar slits, conventional verse-refrain structure but with great care for arrangement and composition, which always creates variations. Song powerful, that gives the charge, engaging.
BUT I CHOOSE 3) PORNO DADDY BECAUSE IT IS A SURPRISE FOR ME (i DIDNT KNOW FREAK KITCHEN.)
Other songs I like very much:
- THE ILLINOIS SPEED PRESS: Beauty. Californian rock and roll with great solos on the electric guitars.
-Foals: Heavy Waters. Rhythm-based electronium beginning with choirs with a decorative role. Characteristic is the sound, and the song gives its best in the surprising instrumental piece, completely creative, almost an improvised jam, syncopated in funky-jazz style. Too bad that in the end the sung part and the song fades without returning anything new. Notable song but missed masterpiece.
- ANNA & ELIZABETH: Little Black Train. Simple song, all based on country melody and vocal interpretation, both remarkable. It gives a nice pleasure, which is what I attribute to the true inspiration associated with immediacy.
Other songs very good to my ears:
- Hattler: Assalamu Alaikum. A basically soulful song with a pop-rock arrangement and remarkable guitar work. Strange the effect of the refrain with words in Arabic.
- Shoes: The Acid rock and roll with a typical Sixities arrangement (rock, psychedelia, beat), good creativity, interesting instrumental part, almost cacophonic, near to a jam-session.
Other good songs to my ears:
- Ides of March: Vehicle. Live song with a orchestral jazz arrangement, very exuberant, characterized by the powerful voice of the singer. It is not a genre that I love very much. Reminds me of the Colosseums with Chris Farlowe.
- Parliament: Mothership connection. Here we listen to a noisy funky, very uncouth, very spontaneous, it seems almost improvised, and there is something of a reggae. To be listened to while smoking marijuana because it remains the same from start to finish. It relaxes me and puts me in a good mood but does not exalt me. All based on rhythm, vocal interpretation and wind instruments. Tr
NOT EXACTLY OF MY TASTE:
-RATSO: I WANT EVERYTHING. The voice of the singer recalls Leonard Cohen! And even the atmosphere, languid, vaguely erotic, with the voice of a chorister in the background. Very relaxing song, to be heard at night with a woman before....
-LAMBCHOP: Pop song, airy, carefree, relaxed, all based on the singing and the light melody, minimal arrangement with percussion that are repeated so that it does not exalt me.

Hi,
Same time element, although I think that Ides of March were more influenced by CHICAGO and SONS OF CHAMPLIN than anything else. AND both of these had been doing shows in the Chicago area for some time, and were well known even before they were "signed" and their albums became known.
Ides of March started way before, but hit it big with the single in mid 1970.
Sons of Champlin very early but not "signed" until 1968.
Colosseum mostly between 1968-1971

Haha, yes, I thought about posting something similar.
A quicker series might build up some momentum. Maybe a time frame for choosing the “winner” would help, as having a winner is part of the MO, but no reason why there can’t be multiple ones running at the same time.
Theese are all winners for me. There was only one I didn’t initially like much due to a certain anti-metal bias, and that I subsequently liked much more. I do plan to go rather more obscure next time with my choice even if not really obscure.

3. Sonia Dada - Wacky fun stuff. "No disco in the jungle." Right on! The screaming vocals are a bit much.

When I was young, and a huge fan of Springsteen, I wondered: why does Bruce have so few female fans? Now that I love prog I say to myself: but how is it that for prog there are above all male fans? It is not a good thing!
And in fact how is my partner? She loves Italian melodic music, the one that comes from melodrama, from opera, similar to the Sanremo festival! And I have to listen to Tiziano Ferro or Jovanotti, or Vasco Rossi, or Eros Ramazzotti: I can't stand them! When I put Van der Graaf's music in the car, she says that music annoys her, irritates her (the only one she likes is Refugee). With Springsteen it's already better, she bears it more and she appreciates many songs. It must be said that she is from southern Italy, and I from Milan, I am Central European (Mitteleuropäisch) in all respects, she is still tied to the Byzantine culture.

Hi,
I enjoyed this poll despite not being ready for it.
No complaints per se. However in my choice it would be a listing of things for fans, that they can add, that are NOT on PA's top 100 album OR BANDS.
There is way too much out there that is magnificent and they won't get a suggestion or even a nice wave for some really far out things, and even some of the latest and more modern stuff is rewriting the book as we speak and write ... but we can't bring up the stuff that has become valuable and far out ...
I mean ... look at this list of the things I have been listening ... and are any of these even thought about and looked at in PA?

Errr... yesterday?
The thing is that if you say outside PA's top 100, there's still lots of stuff that is well known to 95% here and appreciated by 60%. No, I like the "not on PA" restriction, by and large. It's clear and precise and stops us from posting stuff that we can be sure 90% know and 60% like. Fine by me.
Although I could imagine "special editions" like "Stuff that is not on PA but should be there in your view" or even "stuff that is on PA but has less than 10 ratings".
By the way, there's no law that states only jamesbaldwin can start such a poll.

I listen to and mention Robert Wyatt very frequently. Amdittedly he doesn;t get much attention at PA for his "solo" work outside of Rock Bottom. I love lots of his albums. I also like the "not in PA" restriction. Was thinking about mentioning that you, Pedro, might like to do that when I saw your post.

^ No, nominations are closed for this round, various of us have already voted for our three choices. But I expect another round to come later (soon I hope).
Incidentally, this way is fun, but, I wonder if it might work better to have write-in votes only in the future. You'd create a master list in the first post with videos taken from the submissions. That way we can see that people are voting for three choices, and since there seemingly will be the expectation that in the future "polls" people should not vote for their own choices, this might help to ensure that the proper guidelines are being followed. I'm not worried about abuse really, but people make mistakes when voting. It doesn't work well if people aren't listening to all of the choices, and it's nice to see people's thoughts on their choices. Right now there are 31 votes, which doesn't tally with the three votes per person expectation. Of course one might only really like one or two choices, but then the other vote[s] should be for the lesser of the other evils, so to speak.

If I like only two, I'll only vote for two, why not? Cristi mentioned only two, TheH only one, and you never know who else may have voted for one or two. By the way, as far as I understand the forum, there' no stopping anyone even from voting four times or even many times for the same, which seems a much bigger problem to me, because an outsider can swamp the poll. But I don't think there's any protection from that?
Posted By: Logan
Date Posted: May 21 2020 at 14:36
Well I don’t mind the idea at all of only voting for two or one, just think that should then be specified. My major point was intended to be that I think perhaps only write-in votes should count, be it because of abuse or due to carelessness. One can make polls that are strictly write-in, and that’s how I would do it. But it is James topic and of course he can do it how he likes.
He wrote in the OP:
“When we have a definitive list of songs to vote for, each of us will vote for his three favourite songs (but first you have to listen to them! You don't vote at random! ;-))”
I guess I’m just kind of old fashioned in that I tend to follow such directives. I like the idea of choosing three, but even if I didn’t I would still try to choose three as that was asked of me, and I like the idea of consistent expectations for the participants and that the participants try to follow the set guidelines/ expectations. If I set up a poll and ask people to do one thing, for instance, I appreciate it when people try to follow my guidelines by taking my poll question and OP into account. With others I might question their approach, but generally I try my best to meet their expectations rather than just doing things my way. While I like to consider myself to be an open-minded liberal, I’m quite conservative in some respects.
Edit: it occurs to me that perhaps I wasn’t clear with what I mean by write-in votes. I mean that people post their choices (specified in a post) and those are then tallied, rather than basing it on the typical PA voting poll. I have found it a preferable way to conduct kinds of polls in the past.

I've got to say I tend to have the same attitude, so I get what you're saying. I tend to get annoyed with people who, if somebody sets up a game with some rules, come in to say "the rules should be different"... and then it's the typical thing where somebody gets annoyed with others doing the same thing they themselves tend to do... because I am very interested in rules and how to set them up and why, and I can well come in making such a comment myself.
In any case there is always a limit to the range of rules and the authority of the person who set them up. If I don't find "three favourites", I can vote for three, but not for three favourites, so voting for just my two favourites in that case can be seen as no breach of the rules but rather interpretation of a case in which they don't apply. And then the other thing is, if we play games for fun, it's good to have good rules, but being too strict about them and putting too much effort into policing them takes the fun out of things... and that's meant as a a damn serious analytic statement.

When interpreting such a case, I think it's fair to discuss that with the judge before making your own own final verdict. The rules were set up from the beginning, and by participating we were asked to comply with them. That it wasn't perhaps as easy as we thought it might be doesn't negate the expectation.
If, despite giving it one's best shot, one could not find up to three favourites (say one had two stand out choices and all the others were completely equal), then one might ask Lorenzo if just two is fine. For another only one might stand out. If it were me, I'd find some excuse to choose a third, and might express that in my post even if I wasn't really satisfied with my choice. If the judge/OP didn't accept that reasoning, we couldn't come to a compromise and I was disqualified from voting, well, one adjusts in other ways. In the case you mentioned, if Lorenzo had a problem with it, then he could have said so. He didn't, so I don't care either way. At least by taking the posts into consideration, instead of just relying on the poll list, the dungeonmaster or gamesmaster can question the validity of the choices. And again that's one reason why I might favour write-in votes (casting ones votes in a post, and then having those tallied up) instead of relying on multiple-choice polls which can be misused.
Sometimes people are just in error as they misunderstood the expectations. Indeed, what bothers me particularly is that sometimes people blatantly disregard the expectations in an arrogant my-way-is-better-than-yours and follow their own rules, or tell you what the rules should be. I like to make suggestions when it comes to the process, but I try to respect the OPs wishes, and if the OP disagrees, well, that's fine. I can try it my own way for my own topic.
This kind of disregard and disrespect towards the topic starter's wishes happens in many different topics. Someone might ask for something, and another tells them "You don't want that, this is much better" and "You should have done this or asked for this instead." It can be very patronising. I've played board games with people who don't want to play by the established rules, and it can be very frustrating. For instance, during a game of chess, "Didn't you hear that dog bark? In chess, the way it should be played, the white knight carries a magical lance that can obliterate the enemy within five minutes of the player hearing a dog bark if you are wearing a green shirt on the second Sunday in June provided your name is Gerald, so I win and you lose. Loser!" Okay, that absurd thing didn't happen, but incidents rather similar to it have happened. Back in my D&D days it could be really annoying when people would go really off-script.
In my case I had too many I really liked, but I bit the bullet and went with three. It wasn't easy and my mood at the time ultimately dictated the results, but I vacillated even as I posted those three. I didn't really have three clear favourites even then. Earlier I thought I'd likely end up going with various different choices. Lambchop was the only constant and had an advantage as I'd recently got into other music by the band (it's the kind of music I've been very into recently). It was a challenge, and for me the challenge of choosing three was part of the fun. On a tangential note, there have been various studies which have indicated that it is common for people to like less choice rather than more. For instance, it is commonly less stressful for people to be faced with choosing between three flavours of ice cream than 50 shades of Grey Poupon, or wait, it was 50 flavours of non-Poupon (a mustard) ice cream.
I get how being really dictatorial can take the fun out of such things, but as the rules/ expectations were set down for participation from the beginning, If I were to not follow those, I'd want to discuss that with the one who came up with the rules. People knew what they were getting into from the outset "if you want to join us....". Yes if one can't find three favourites then choosing one or two that isn't a favourite can be problem. I might have phrased it differently, in retrospect at least, to "Choose three favourites, or if you don't have three favourites, choose three anyway...". Or something better expressed than what I just wrote preferably.
Anyway, I expect that this is something of learning process and future ones might be done a little differently. Of course, that is up to Lorenzo. I know when I've done poll series I try to refine and change things as I go on in the hopes that it will work more satisfactorily not just for me but for others. I do think that this was a grand idea and hope that considerably more of the forum community ends up participating in various ways. It's quite time consuming, wouldn't be for everyone for various reasons, so not everyone would be up to or willing to partake in the process.

I listen to and mention Robert Wyatt very frequently. Admittedly he does'nt get much attention at PA for his "solo" work outside of Rock Bottom. I love lots of his albums. I also like the "not in PA" restriction. Was thinking about mentioning that you, Pedro, might like to do that when I saw your post.
Hi,
I kinda meant ... played as if in radio, not at home. Guy has consistently played his material since ROCK BOTTOM, and at the time he could not play RUTH IS ... because the import could not be found anywhere.
To this day, RW's material gets played ... and sometimes the odd bits from other folk's albums as well.
Too much of the "progressive" shows are about a sound and a style only ... they don't know what the word meant and are not interested in its meaning, because the top albums are already listed and set in some kind of paper mache stone!

I see, methinks I misread "when was the last time you EVER heard anyone playing RW?" as "when was the last time you EVER heard of anyone playing RW?
I actually heard Robert Wyatt playing, or at least singing, on the radio not that long ago. It was the Costello/Langer penned "Shipbuilding". I had the radio on in the car, and it played in full during a CBC radio music programme (Canada's national broadcaster). I had also heard Wyatt's "Sea Song" on the radio around the same time. I think I've also heard Wyatt's "Maryan" on the radio before (CBC again I think), but that was years ago. I don't listen to a lot of music radio. I used to hear interesting experimental music, including RIO-type music and Krautrock on the university radio. They played a lot of unusual music, especially late night. It depended on the hosts. We get some interesting music on the French language radio. Heard Harmonium many times over the years.

I listened and voted last night. Liked them all really. For the record, the three I liked the most last night were Hattler, Foals, and Lambchop.
