I can't see people shaking hands in a few months
due to fears. Even if say I was totally carefree and open to being in
crowds, if my friends are averse to it, then I won't be doing it,
either. I also have been hearing those in LA saying how nice the air is
to breathe since everyone is video-conferencing instead of flying
airplanes.
Even the regular flu is terrible enough - I had two weeks of it. It
seems the world has been going this way, anyway. Instead of face to
face, people use e-mail, phones, even using Skype (or porn) to get off
sexually, and then moving along with your day.

Yes, we will social distance forever (which will make making babies a bigger chore than it already is).
I predict long distance relationships to become the norm. Safe sex will be taken to a new level, it will now be phone and virtual reality sex, and done through instant messenger and through PA PMs -- so no change there. The very adventurous and fearless will do it in Hazmat suits. Babies will be grown in isolated bubbles for those that can afford it. Most will just have Tamagotchi babies. No more pubs. People will drink themselves to death alone. Sports events will be done in solitary circumstances on one's game system of choice. I predict that in the future instead of live concerts in front of an audience, those concerts will be beamed into your home as "Pay-TV" events. Cinemas, aka movie theatres, will be a thing of the past except for those who can afford to build their own private ones. Others will watch "movies" on their own private videoscreens. Every employee that can't work from home will be given their own private office building in the arctic tundra and other remote places to maintain isolation. Other work will be done by robots with the latest anti-virus updates, but even they will try to socially distance themselves as much as possible.. Disinfected food and other consumer goods will be ordered on-line and delivered by disinfected drones. War will be done all remotely at the push of a button. Holidays will be taken in total isolation and will take place in total seclusion in the comfort of your own dwelling. Shaking hands will be a thing of the past, we shall now bow to each other on our vid phones or while using binoculars and gazing out of our protective window barrier shields. The future is very much alone.
Seriously, I think social distancing and less physical contact will be the norm for many of us for some time, and even after people will likely be more careful with social contact. I was already like that anyway, so it's not as big a change for me as with some others.

Maybe 2-3 years? A vaccine could take 12-18 months to test (does it work?; side effects?; etc.), though maybe this will be sooner since scientists are almost all focusing on this pandemic. It could take an additional year to make enough for everyone. Again, this could also be sooner due to its priority. A lot of unknowns.

funny..or not.. but perhaps social distancing may or may not be the new normal.. but the world around us will change I (and others suspect) after Convid has passed. One could well be something that right wingers have been salivitating about.. A real about face from the decades long march towards globalism. Economic and social. For all that Trump, Brexisteers and the right wing neo facisists out there have tried to do.. pander to fear and a changing world ..the virus may do for them. A real case for it they can make upon real fear. We got lucky with SARS.. not so much so with Covid.. but there will the next one.. and god help us if it combine the worst of both.

Forever?? No, humans need contact we are not robots, although this website believes we are bots.
I suspect there will be some realizations that business expenses like travel for meetings may be cut back, as well more work from home jobs will appear or be allowed. People with respiratory issues are told to be careful during flu season, get the flu shot so and so forth. Covid will be added to this list for those with weak immune systems, for the rest of us it will be the vaccine and stay away from sick people. I don't expect an approved vaccine till Nov at earliest......Testing to start in 2-3 months.
I expect people to go back to work in 2-3 months, the economy cannot go on like this.

You might have a point there about isolationism becoming favorable. I have some doubts we'll lean in that direction. One good thing that could come out of it is the need to make some products in the U.S. in case this happens again, at least in the bio/medical industry. Another thing that has to take place is some sort of international agreement on what to do when the next one comes. Too many countries stumbled through this. Isolationism or not, a global effort is needed to stop or prevent a pandemic.

I don't think so.
I certainly won't be. I will be hugging my friends and shaking hands as soon as deemed safe to do so. I'm sure there are politicians who would love to see us forever divided from each other, but that is all the more reason to regain that physical contact with people when this disaster comes to an end.
Mental health will nosedive severely in the coming months. People will also start losing their sh*t, under house arrest, and in the aftermath of all this you will see stratospheric and disturbing levels of poverty, unemployment, crime and disorder. We need each other now more than ever.

I think this planet will be having sex-orgies after the lockdown  ... young people will f**k anything that moves on Tinder. Even  Kardashian  will find someone sexually attracted to her, because sex-starved males won't be so regarding for the first weeks or so.  There may not be enough condoms around, and face a shortage.  
The average human safety/comfortability distance is +/- 1m20 (YMMV, I've got a Belgian colleague whose distance seems to be 3m) but for conversations and friends, we were reducing it to 0m80. In most places right now they're asking to apply 1m50 to 2m, and most of us find too much, having to talk too loud to have a care-free conversation without someone eavesdropping.
What I don't like about this crisis will be some of the winners, like extremist apocalyptical sects or just conservatives, who will use the crisis to impose a ban on "touching".
But also the so-called "social technologies" (social networks), which is actually anything but social since it is physically distancing people from each other. I'm also a little afraid the Woody Allen will become prophetic with his love-making machine.  
What I'm also concerned is that northern europeans social distances will probably win on what they perceive as "Mediterranean promiscuity", including kissing as a form of greeting every day. In the French world, over the last decades, a lot of men have gotten to do that as well (it's become socially acceptable, whereas before this was a w-w or w-m thing), since that cheek-kissing is non-sexual. Not that I'm a fan of kissing guys that shave as little as me , anyways, but I'm fairly tactile with people I like (gentle slap on the shoulder and such), though I've witheld with women since #MeToo (you never know). Living & working in a very international institution (up to 35 nationalities), the handshake was the norm (though not everyday, usually back from holidays or lengthy missions or rare encounters), and kissing women for excetional reasons (b-days, HNY & stuff). The Least We Can Do Wave To Each Other 
One of the positive effects could be that many things wrong (as in polluting) will be toned down, because the air is much cleaner recently. I can only welcome the great reduction of useless flying or boating (this means tourism) or at least the introduction of heavy taxation on both yet-untaxed kerosene (planes) and heavy fuels (boat cruises and cargos), just to make those transports less attractive: is it normal that low-cost companies can offer tickets Stockholm-Cyprus for 40.00 Ģ$ return if reserved four months ahead? I mean, f**k useless tourism (despite the number of jobs it provides), one of the prime source of pollution , but also leisure sports that pollute (jet-ski, quads, motorsports, parachuting, etc) but also professional sports that require global-travels (F1 racing is the worst example). In other words, syart planning programmed degrowth.
Though I suspect that most captains of the industries will try to re-start as if nothing happened.  |

Hi,
I never thought that it would be a virus that killed the FAN in a lot of rock music concerts ... and I expect that some of of the folks that love music, know that they have it at home, and waiting another week or a month is no big deal ... but those screaming fans telling an artist what to play and not respecting Robert Fripp because he sits down and plays seriously instead of showing off his skills to an audience. Good riddance!
Maybe this top ten "fandom" will die out quicker ... and we get back to the real meat in the music! (.... instead of those Gen____ fans!)

The following is probably not very politically-correct, but let's go for it:
All in all, a huge part of the problem of the planet is the human overcrowding, and pandemies are bound to happen and make victims: we've seen that in rat population, and probably dinos - don't believe in the meteorite crash, they choked on their own flatulences. With the exception of a few people (namely a few teens in good health - reportedly, anyways), this epidemy is mostly taking out the physically-weaker ones, so this is somewhat Darwin-esque, isn't it?
I'm not so sure that Ducknald Trump is that wrong when he's qualifying Covid as "a big flu". Yeah, sure it's really scary to see the consequence of the hospitalized, but are we all not panicking a little too easy (I amongst the rest of the panickers)?? My brother has just survived it and his son as well (both diagnosed 19 days ago in Luxembourg). The bro says it's "the worst flu" he's ever had to fight against, but never felt like his life was endangered and the nephew has been playing in the yard for over a week or so. I personally know (as a person or colleague) of no-one else that contracted the virus. We'd have to see whether we have more dead (of any nature, except wars) planet-wise than previous years in the first three months, Covid included, and check again in June and at the end of the year.

Of course there are a world of problems,abuse of power, and ethical issues there, and so I'm not saying that I support a eugenics/ selective breeding campaign even though I would like the species to improve itself (perhaps with gene editing it will, and it's hardly all about smarts). One could write ten thousand pages on that topic easily and still not cover enough ground to look at all the potential implications.
I do think this planet could do with far less people, we're exploiting the planet, and we consume far too much. I haven't gone so far as to become an anti-natalist though, and am not nearly as misanthropic as some people I know.
I am rather hoping with COVID-19 that this might trigger some sort of change in many people, but then the dangers of climate change don;t seem to have changed the behaviours/ habits of people as much as I would have expected

Hmm...I think that more babies may be born 9 months from now from those couples who are locked up together and lose their ability to practice birth control because of loss of healthcare coverage from unemployment, which has hit 6 million in the US alone. I hope I'm wrong Greg. This is a terrible time bring unwanted children into our pandemic world.

That's a very good and worrying point.
Some noodling: I'd like it if he governments would discuss this issue, and maybe send out free birth control (Trojan Man could become the US mascot), but I wouldn't expect it (religious dogma and pandering to religions is one of the impediments). I feel lucky to live in Canada where we have universal health care, but accessing that health care now presents problems.
At the least I hope this causes more people to realise that something needs to change. I might have thought climate change would have already had that effect, but it seems most people continue with their bad habits when it comes to overconsumption -- an economy based on the "overproduction" and overconsumption of goods, and where greed, and getting ahead of everyone else at the expense of others commonly, is seen by many as a sort of virtue or positive quality (more something to be envied than abhorred).

Safe sex will be taken to a new level, it will now be phone and virtual reality sex, and done through instant messenger and through PA PMs -- so no change there. The very adventurous and fearless will do it in Hazmat suits. Babies will be grown in isolated bubbles for those that can afford it. Most will just have Tamagotchi babies..." et cetera, was hoping to get a smile (I rarely do that I know of, so I should stop trying, or trying too hard perhaps), I actually did in part have a film called Z.P.G. (Zero Population Growth) in mind, where due to extreme pollution and environmental degradation, it was made illegal to have children for one generation (I don't remember exactly how many years) and mothers were sort of given comfort baby dolls to soother them. Failure to comply resulted in the execution of the baby-makers and the child. The premise of the TV show in my avatar was that the world is overpopulated, this is dooming the planet, and drastic means are necessary to bring the numbers down. It is an unpopular opinion, but I also think that there are too many people on the planet, it's been growing uncontrollably, and something should be down about that. I've never been comfortable with abortion, and have been told I have no say in that, but I would like to see more birth control around the world, but I still rather would like to encourage the smartest to have children.
There's a fun comedy film called Idiocracy where the premise is that the more thoughtful and professional people who plan end up having very few children, whereas the stupid end up having lots of children, which results in a dumbing down of the population. Of course there are a world of problems,abuse of power, and ethical issues there, and so I'm not saying that I support a eugenics/ selective breeding campaign even though I would like the species to improve itself (perhaps with gene editing it will, and it's hardly all about smarts). One could write ten thousand pages on that topic easily and still not cover enough ground to look at all the potential implications.
I do think this planet could do with far less people, we're exploiting the planet. I haven't gone so far as to become an anti-natalist though, and am not nearly as misanthropic as some people I know. |

I hope I'm wrong Greg. This is a terrible time bring unwanted children into our pandemic world. |

Some noodling: I'd like it if he governments would discuss this issue, and maybe send out free birth control (Trojan Man could become the US mascot), but I wouldn't expect it (religious dogma and pandering to religions is one of the impediments). I feel lucky to live in Canada where we have universal health care, but accessing that health care now presents problems.
At the least I hope this causes more people to realise that something needs to change. I might have thought climate change would have already had that effect, but it seems most people continue with their bad habits when it comes to overconsumption -- an economy based on the "overproduction" and overconsumption of goods, and where greed, and getting ahead of everyone else at the expense of others commonly, is seen by many as a sort of virtue or positive quality (more something to be envied than abhorred). |

Indeed, and that was very much in my mind. So don't expect the propaganda campaign of "Uncle Sam Needs You!" to be replaced with "Uncle Johnny Needs You and Your Willy!" or "Don't be a dick, cover that prick", or "A Patriotic Penis is a Sheaved Penis" And certainly not a gov't ad campaign along the lines of "Rubbers save lives by preventing lives."

I am not an expert of this COVID-19 (read about it, but not really much, reading about music is still much more interesting), so I donīt know is it really "killer-virus never been this planet before" but I think this kind of pandemic has been in the world before? My work mate looked from the google there had been "Asian"-virus in the 1957 and it had killed 2000 people in Finland. Yes, I know there are lot more people in the world today and we move from land to land, but anyway if this goes as it has gone before, will there just be (half year?) and itīs over? I donīt think there were any vaccines in 1957 for that pandemic.
Anyway this hasnīt been really a big catastrophe in my life so far, me and my family have always liked to be much time in home. I was going to have three gigs where I played, I was going to go in Yes, VdGG & Nick Masonīs gigs, VdGG is already moved to November, I believe those two are going also to move or cancel. If there really not going to be any possibility to play to live audience and also be in the concert in the future I think I will miss that a little, but I believe I could live with it.

We are social creatures, and being social is part of our DNA.
There have been plagues and pandemics throughout human history, but they have never stopped us returning to our social instincts.
There may be a period of re-adjustment once the virus has passed, but, in ten years time, we will be socialising just like we always have done.

My instincts didn't tell me to be social last year.. I go online to pinpoint my interests, and after this is all over, I have no interest in meeting new people, or seeing old people.

There are estimates of up to 100 million deaths from Spanish Flu and around 500 million people were infected, but of course hygiene and medicine have advanced a lot since then.
