Subject: Top 5 Genesis Songs

IN THE BEGINNING there were five members of Charterhouse School who ONE DAY decided to form a band. That band was GENESIS. They were LOOKING FOR SOMEONE to promote and produce their first album when a WINDOW of opportunity came along in the shape of Jonathan King, a DUKE of record producers working BEHIND THE LINES at the time. The album "FROM GENESIS TO REVELATION" entered a LAND OF CONFUSION and MISUNDERSTANDING though when many record stores placed the album in their religious music sections due to the religious-sounding title. The album and first single "SILENT SUN" both flopped, and barely caused any RIPPLES in the music press either, despite Jonathan King CALLING ALL STATIONS to try and promote the album and single on the radio. GENESIS' second single "A WINTER'S TALE" was also met with about as much indifference as A FLY ON A WINDSHIELD by radio stations and barely NO REPLY AT ALL from the music press. Their record company Decca became ENTANGLED in a dispute when it was discovered there was another band in America called GENESIS, but by A TRICK OF THE TAIL, the band managed to keep their name ANYWAY by changing their name to "Revelation" in the United States.

The music business has always been as fickle as a HARLEQUIN, where THE DIVIDING LINE between success and failure depends on a combination of good luck and hard work. Every new band is sailing through UNCERTAIN WEATHER where they can easily be dragged down by the UNDERTOW and SHIPWRECKED by having THE KNIFE stuck into them by their record company or by the music press. THAT'S ALL it takes to finish a band's career. There's NEVER A TIME when it's been easy to make it in the tough music business, but LIKE IT OR NOT, that's just the WAY OF THE WORLD. No astrological WATCHER OF THE SKIES can predict who's going to make it in today's cynical music industry, where the chances of success are about as hard as climbing a WHITE MOUNTAIN of snow before the FADING LIGHTS of DUSK close in.

AFTER THE ORDEAL of seeing the commercial failure of their first album, GENESIS were IN LIMBO and left out IN THE WILDERNESS during a short period of STAGNATION when the band members returned to their studies at Charterhouse. They weren't DOWN AND OUT or TAKING IT ALL TOO HARD though, because making great music was far more than JUST A JOB TO DO for the five talented band members. Contrary to being IN HIDING, GENESIS were just COUNTING OUT TIME in THE WAITING ROOM of THE CINEMA SHOW of life before returning to the recording studio. The band members were confident of THE MUSICAL BOX of talent they had between them and their HORIZONS were positively bright with the general feeling that IT'S GONNA GET BETTER soon. GENESIS were working to a TIME TABLE and they didn't plan on LIVING FOREVER on borrowed time, or waiting around each day until SUPPER'S READY. They were IN TOO DEEP to consider THROWING IT ALL AWAY at this late stage. The band were more than ready to TURN IT ON AGAIN with an INVISIBLE TOUCH of magic with the release of their next album, "TRESPASS". It would be several albums later though before GENESIS were basking in the AFTERGLOW of a successful album release, followed by the DOMINO effect of success breeding further success in the proverbial AISLE OF PLENTY.

==================================================================

Following on from the Top 5  Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Yes and Renaissance song polls, here's your chance to name your Top 5 Genesis songs. Simply list your Top 5 in order of preference below and then I'll assign points to your listings as follows:-

1st song - 6 points
2nd song - 4 points

I agree. I think the Peter Gabriel era was the best Genesis era too, but "Trick of the Tail" and "Wind & Wuthering" are both surprisingly good albums without Peter Gabriel at the helm. Smile

Genesis completely lost my support after the "Duke" album though. Confused

I agree about after Gabriel-era. Phil has done really great job in vocals, I think it was the only solution in that situation that would have worked although Phil wouldn´t have wanted to become a frontman (it´s not long ago I read his book, it´s great book). Anyway I think they lost something in their music after Peter, it become somehow colder, but anyway those two albums are my favorites too from after Gabriel albums. I like at least a little all the other Genesis albums, but Calling All Stations is not Genesis album IMO.

If Genesis is coming to Finland somewhere in the future, have to think coming to see them. Just because never seen them (really would like to see Gabriel in vocals and Hackett in guitar, but it´s very possible never happened).

^ I’ve never seen the appeal in The Carpet Crawlers. One of the weaker moments off The Lamb for me. I just find the song very ‘ordinary’. Not having a go, but many folks seem to like it a lot.....

^ Yes, it's conventionally mainstream 'pretty' but nonetheless for me, exquisitely beautiful (but maybe not anyone's idea of bona fide Prog composition) I guess it represents an example of what presaged Gabriel's eventual estrangement from his colleagues which is kinda ironic given the fondant pap they went on to churn out much later

it's a good song.
funny thing, my favorite version of the song is the re-working of it for a compilation from 1999.
They did it with the help of technology, obviously, they did not do it together, in the same room that is LOL

Paul, would you ever consider doing a post Gabriel Genesis song list? That could be interesting although probably not everyone would participate. ;)

I wouldn't be able to participate in my own poll. I'd struggle to come up with a post-Gabriel list of seven Genesis songs I actually like. Wink

1. Ripples (12 points)
2. Follow You, Follow Me (8 points)

That's about it. Smile

Seriously, how did I miss this?
1. Supper's Ready
2. The Musical Box
3. Mama
4. Home by the Sea (first and second)
5. Firth of Fifth
I've come to the conclusion songs on Duke work better on an album rather than individually, but I'm still going to try and get a few Duke songs in thief's top 20 Genesis songs.

"Music is the wine that fills the cup of silence" - Robert Fripp
"I am an anti-Christ" - Johnny Rotten

Good idea, that. A lot of people can't stand Genesis without Gabriel, but they have done some very good stuff. I still hold Genesis never did a bad album. Their last fully prog album was probably Duke, but that doesn't mean the stuff that came after was bad (certainly, you're off your rocker if you think We Can't Dance is 100% prog*, but that doesn't mean it's a rubbish album). Even CAS wasn't a terrible album IMO - it does not sound remotely like the 70s Genesis we know and love, but it isn't awful.
*25%, I'd say. Dreaming While You Sleep, Fading Lights and Driving the Last Spike - 3/12 tracks, 25%.

Looking back on this I'm not sure why I voted for Firth of Fifth above Supper's Ready. How can anything be better than Supper's Ready? Lol. I'm not sure why I have Unquiet Slumbers for the Sleepers in a top five also. It's great but not quite top five imo. If I did this now I might swap it out for Dance on a Volcano. Oh well.

Interesting that so few picked In The Cage ( I counted a couple at No 5 and that was it). I wonder if it's because the live version with the extended Slippermen and Afterglow sections has upsurped the original studio track? Also it fades out which may be an actual crime. Love the intro and atmosphere though a lot more than on live versions.

I like the way the eventual Top 10 has turned out, where the only favourite song missing for me is Ripples. Smile

^ I find Ripples a bit too maudlin for me and also the use of the ageing metaphor was maybe used by ELP better on Take a Pebble so not that original, although it does have wonderful playing (of course) . Trick is a great album though and easily in my Genesis top three with Lamb and Foxtrot.
