Hi all, I'm very surprised to say that after a long break from music (building a modular synth or two) a new album is in the offing.
Provisionally titled "Omnivac", some preview music is on the website. At the moment, it's all rough ideas and needs major polishing, but it'll be released "when it's done". Featuring analogue modular synths, string synthesizers and whatever we can get our hands on, it's sort of psychedelia meets krautrock meets Eastern influenced / Arabic music. Or whatever. Category schmategory.

Track list, personnel etc to follow. One half of the album is taken up with a half hour modular synth jam (for those of you following the thread in Tech Talk, we've built two huge modular synths and now design our own equipment). Two other tracks are finished with a third - the title track - in the pipeline.

So, if you want to hear what all these damn transistors sound like, stay tuned.

Oh yes, this is NOT going to be a free release. Cough up, you cheapskates.

A more specific preview here. Lots of polishing and finishing to do. If you like Tangerine Dream and Klaus Schulze, it's probably right up your street.

I'm not one for political correctness ... but honestly, I think you should tone this down ... it makes me think that you are not going to attract the edgewise listeners, because the comment is ... (.....whatevahhh!!!)

For one awful moment there, I thought you were announcing the release of another Brotherhood of Man album.

Oh, Jesus, no. ;-) Once was far too many times.....
Well, so far, I seem to have about 50 minutes recorded, a lot of it (including the preview track) is very rough (the timing is awful on some parts) but !! It's all polishing up, slowly.
Suddently had an idea earlier. You all might have heard Edvard Artemiev's "Meditation" - the theme to Tarkovsky's "Stalker". Unfortunately, Azerbaijani tar's are a little hard to find in Macclesfield, so I was wondering if I could find a way of doing a sort of version of it with some similar sounding instruments.
Aha !! Right, use a resonator - add lots of reverb and delay. Working so far in some test pieces I've done. There's a synth pad background (although I may end up using a string synth) and I really should blow the dust off a flute I've got, although, to be honest, it needs a bit of a re-pad. I might end up seeing if I can get away with using a wind synth instead.

PS if anyone's waiting for a slide guitar piece, keep waiting. I only have one soul to sell and that went on saxophones. ;-)

This being Artemyev's "Meditation". ;-)
Incidentally, if you've not seen "Stalker", it's a fantastic film.

Will it come in a physical form (LP,CD, MC...)?

No plans to do anything other than digital, to be honest.
I'd love to do a CD but the experience of most people I know whose bands produce CDs is that they end up just sitting around with a pile of full jewel cases. As for vinyl, too much outlay, even smaller market. Shame, but there y'go, that's the economics.

Finally released the Omnivac album on Bandcamp. If you mail [email protected] , the first 50 replies get a free digital download ! The album includes a live 25 minute jam session using two modular synths.
We eagerly await comments from Mosh about how he'd do it differently. ;-)

Just headphoned Omnivac this morning while cooking a big batch of breakfast burritos. Fantastic work. I saw 'Time and Space' on the track list and was wondering how you were going to interpret the Gnidrilog classic. Have to say what it turned out to be was an even better surprise.
Anyway, I just purchased. Sorry I didn't catch it before May 1 when Bandcamp was waving their fees.

Thanks, Tapfret, really glad you liked it ! ;-) Cheers for the purchase, it's much appreciated.
We're not waiting years to release another, by the way. (All the soldering is done. ;-) ) (He lied, I'm building a phaser.)
The next release is titled "Central", done when it's done. It's going to be VERY old school Tangerine Dream and virtually exclusively involve the modular synths. And the phaser. When it's finished.
Only 40 more wires to solder up. ;-)

PS Don't wait up as I have no idea where 5 of the wires are going. ;-)

The issue here is not so much building the electronics, but determining the wiring. The bloke who designed it thoughtlessly died and it's impossible to work out what he was on about. On top of that, the PCB has gone through several revisions and as a result, it's all going to be the result of guesswork.
I hate wiring. Wiring hates me.
I'm vaguely toying with the idea of building one of these - a Ray Wilson / Music from Outer Space Soundlab Ultimate plus expander. Three problems. Ray has also joined the Choir Invisible, the wiring is an absolutely explosion in a spaghetti factory and calibrating the oscillators on this (so it plays in tune) is about as easy as plaiting fog. This is not a cheap piece of kit to build, so it's all balancing expense versus risk. Sounds most jolly, though.
