Greece can't be considered East Europe. It's East but it's Mediterranean, so Aphrodite's Child shouldn't be in the list. The real name of Blue Effect is Modry Efekt. Anyway there's a lot of great artists from behind the iron curtain. I wasn't planning to include Greece here initially, but I've had so many great suggestions for Greek bands to be added to the list that it would have been churlish of me to exclude them. At least I drew the line somewhere by not including Turkey and Israel in the list, even though they're both in the Eurovision Song Contest.

You could say this blog has been "Balkanised", because I've included all of the countries in former Yugoslavia too. I can see Octopus-4's point though, because Eastern Europe for me always meant the countries behind the Iron Curtain in the Soviet sphere of influence, at least up until 1991 anyway. |

As things turned out, I discovered over sixty "new" prog artists in my Greek prog blog, and that doesn't even include Metal, so it turned out to be well-worth while featuring the Greeks separately from the rest of Eastern Europe. "Praise old wine, and new prog" - an old Greek proverb by Pindar.

Thanks for the recommendation. It's one of many East European albums I haven't yet got around to listening to. I was surprised to discover Arsenal Ensemble are from Russia. I thought they were from London, although you'd be lucky to find any English players in the Arsenal football team.

A-Z of East European Prog ABSURDCUS An Eclectic Prog band from Romania who put the "Q" in quirky, but thankfully, the lyrics are all in English - the international language of prog (and air traffic control). The Heavy Prog first album sounds like The Outlet for the band to release all of their pent-up frustrations, but their second album is a complete Post-Rock contrast, sounding like A Drop of Calm in a turbulent topographic ocean. A-Z of East European Prog ALBION When it comes to East European prog, the Poles are in Pole Position, and Albion are no exception. Wow! This top-notch, female-fronted Neo Prog band sound superb, and rather surprisingly, I'm glad to say most of the lyrics are in English too (all but for one album), although maybe not so surprising with a band-name like Albion. A-Z of East European Prog AM FOST LA MUNTE SI MI-A PLACUT I Climbed the Mountain and Loved It, is the intriguing English translation of this Romanian band's name. This Post-Rock band are no strangers to Metal Archives and they also won a Romanian Metalheads Award for best new band, so if you like your post-communist Post Rock on the heavier side, then this is the band for you. Their music is probably not worth climbing a mountain to hear though, in all honesty, as they sound like so many other Post Rock bands of the same ilk, so it all gets to be much of a sameness.
