A guy I know from a Facebook prog group recently conducted a very thorough and deep interview with the one and only Bill Bruford. It's such a long piece that it's being published in three separate parts with different themes. Here is the first one which deals with drumming, the second and third parts are about composition and leadership respectively. It's definitely worth each and every Bruford fan's time, so what are you waiting for?

Read it here:

If you happen to have a handle on Finnish, here is the Finnish version as translated by my super talented, beautiful, funny, etc. wife Saija:

"The symbiotic relationship between the creative framework and its realization through action implies that the two are mutually dependent, both ineffective as art without the other."

Sometimes I think he's way too serious, then he comes out with stuff like that and I lose it...
As a drummer I always admired his tone and especially his control over every aspect of his own playing but when I hear him talk like he does in this interview I'm reminded that he's much more than a drummer, he's a unique musician and artist and I can't wait for the other two parts of this interview Big smile

Lately I myself have been thinking a lot about the frame one lays down to play on, when you dive into (radical) improvisation you can't escape the problem; it's comforting to know that one with his career is still wondering about those things and another sign of him still being an evolving artist, even now that he's retired.

Hi,

Just like his autobiography, always a pleasure to read and enjoy ... it's always nice to see someone else that doesn't go around saying that rock'n'roll is it, and that the fame and the worship is all there is to see and enjoy.

In reading this, I felt like I was reading the sub-text of much of what he had already said in the AUTOBIOGRAPHY, but might not have had words for it, then. It doesn't even feel like a different chapter, since so many of these bits and pieces show up all over the book.

It's a treat, and very nice, to see such an intelligent musician, who can even sit with you, and talk about it some, even if some parts of it might be considered philosophy or thinking.

A wonderful reading, although I'm not sure that most musicians, or drummer for that matter, have the patience and the ability to process so much, into so little an amount of time, in any piece of music, and be able to explain it and justify it ...

Outstanding!

(... the whole thing is so different, that I can't even write a review of his AUTOBIOGRAPHY, which I have now read 3 times! It's like I have to break down what/how I write a poem, or a story ... all I can tell you is ... it's the movie that passed in my mind! ... and of course, you will immediately think ... he's just pulling my hairs!) .... it is simple and at the same time difficult ... but all I can tell you is, ... there it is!

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

I must confess, I opened the Finnish version first, even though I speak not one word of Finnish!!  It seemed like the progressive thing to do.  Thank your dear wife for all of us!!
