^ Good picks! The Crimson King's "Trick of the Tail" is probably the best for representing this site's genre.

Who could it be but the mighty beaver, who poses as if he stands before a microphone standard and has a bottle of Big Big Train beer behind him on the bar?
Admitted, Tony R's avatar is quite a classic.

I remember that avatar. It was the cover of one of his own music albums, I think. One of the best ever indeed. A part of this pic:

oh, I wasn't dissing your avatar. It's still very cool. But your signature image would make a better one, imo.

Ever since I started reading the reviews in PA, I've always liked http://www.progarchives.com/Collaborators.asp?id=8838" rel="nofollow - Australian 's avatar: As for my own avatar, it serves the purpose of saying what I am about. However, aesthetically it has too much detail for such a small image, exacerbated by being black & white.

Best? Don't know.
I like avatars that tell you something about that person and their tastes, or at least give an impression of knowing that person a little more, are humorous, just plain silly or surreal, or make me curious. I think I'd want to do categories of avatar. The best for me do reveal some aspect of the person's personality (all do to some extent I would say, but some I "get" and can identify with more than others).
I do like avatars of the actual members the most on the whole.
EDIT: Some really great avatars have come from people's own artwork rather than just being found by, say, searching google images. If someone created it themselves or it is of themselves, those often are amongst the best for me.
