  A couple I used to use. Custom made, the second one was for jazzmusicarchives.  Tony's was definitely one of my favs.

Best? Don't know. I like avatars that tell you something about that person and their tastes, or at least give an impression of knowing that person a little more, are humorous, just plain silly or surreal, or make me curious. I think I'd want to do categories of avatar. The best for me do reveal some aspect of the person's personality (all do to some extent I would say, but some I "get" and can identify with more than others). I do like avatars of the actual members the most on the whole. EDIT: Some really great avatars have come from people's own artwork rather than just being found by, say, searching google images.
