SOFTEN THE GLARE at ProgDay 2018!

SOFTEN THE GLARE is what happens when different worlds collide.  Guitarist Bon Lozaga has made a name for himself among jazz rock and progressive rock fans with his work in Pierre Moerlen’s Gong, Gongzilla and Tiny Boxes.  He has also forayed into the jam band scene, playing with moe. and Umphreys McGee.  Ryan Martinie is known as the bassist of Mudvayne, a heavy metal band that sold millions of albums and achieved global success.  Now, along with drummer Mitch Hull, they form SOFTEN THE GLARE, an instrumental jazz/rock trio with elements of metal, funk, symphonic progressive and a touch of chaos!

Join SOFTEN THE GLARE for the twenty-fourth edition of ProgDay.  ProgDay is a two day outdoor festival of progressive rock.  ProgDay 2018 will take place on Saturday and Sunday, September 1st and 2nd, at Storybook Farm in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.  For more information, please visit us at www.progday.net.

Norway’s PIXIE NINJA Plays ProgDay 2018!

PIXIE NINJA is the creation of two individuals with a huge appetite for Scandinavian progressive music - Jostein Haugen and Marius Leirånes. Playing together in various projects since 2008, they began to work on Ultrasound, PIXIE NINJA’s debut album, in 2015. Marius and Jostein played guitar, bass and keyboards. The album was produced by Mattias Olsson (Necromonkey, Änglagård), who was also responsible for drums, percussion and other instruments. What emerged was an eclectic mix of heavy ambient, electronica and symphonic rock, all rendered with a strong cinematic feel.

When Ultrasound was released in 2017, Marius and Jostein never intended to perform the material live. However, they later received so many requests for live shows, that they decided to make it happen. In February, 2018, Marius and Jostein asked Mattias Olsson to join the band on drums and Fredrik Klingwall to be the band’s new keyboard maestro. They met up at Roth-Händle Studios in May and started rehearsing for live shows.

ProgDay is happy to host Pixie Ninja for its first performance in the U.S.!

Join PIXIE NINJA and SOFTEN THE GLARE for the twenty-fourth edition of ProgDay.  ProgDay is a two day outdoor festival of progressive rock.  ProgDay 2018 will take place on Saturday and Sunday, September 1st and 2nd, at Storybook Farm in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.  For more information, please visit us at www.progday.net.

FERNANDO PERDOMO and THE OUT TO SEA BAND at ProgDay 2018!

FERNANDO PERDOMO has been making a name for himself as a producer, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist.  As owner and operator of Reseda Ranch Studios (Reseda, CA), he has been involved in a diverse range of musical productions, including work with Linda Perhacs, Dean Ford, Andy Pratt, Rebecca Pidgeon, Cristina Vane, Jacob Jeffries, The Dirty Diamond, Ex Norwegian, and Alih Jey.  To progressive rock fans, he is probably best known as guitarist (and sometimes bassist) of the Dave Kerzner Band.

For Fernando’s fifth solo album, Out To Sea, he decided to celebrate his love of progressive rock with a collection of instrumental symphonic rock pieces.  Playing all of the instruments himself on the studio recording, The Out To Sea Band was formed to bring this music to the live stage.  The band will be performing material from the album Out To Sea, and more.

Join FERNANDO PERDOMO & THE OUT TO SEA BAND, PIXIE NINJA and SOFTEN THE GLARE for the twenty-fourth edition of ProgDay.  ProgDay is a two day outdoor festival of progressive rock.  ProgDay 2018 will take place on Saturday and Sunday, September 1st and 2nd, at Storybook Farm in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.  For more information, please visit us at www.progday.net.

ALEC K. REDFEARN & THE EYESORES Plays ProgDay 2018!

ALEC K. REDFEARN & THE EYESORES have been making uniquely rewarding music for over 15 years. They are one of the great uncategorizable, creative ensembles of our time, crafting a music that is distinctly theirs alone.  Many buzzwords have been used to describe the band’s playing and Redfearn’s composing and arranging, but they all fall short of conveying the dark beauty of the music and lyrics.

The group's unmistakable sound is the result of Alec's songs, which have poignant melodies and lyrics filled with doom-laden imagery. These songs are performed by a band who use unusual instrumentation in interesting and creative ways. The music touches on elements of Americana, folk, European cabaret, minimalism, noise, and progressive rock, but it ultimately transcends all categories except for ‘excellence.’

Join ALEC K. REDFEARN & THE EYESORES, FERNANDO PERDOMO & THE OUT TO SEA BAND, PIXIE NINJA and SOFTEN THE GLARE for the twenty-fourth edition of ProgDay.  ProgDay is a two day outdoor festival of progressive rock.  ProgDay 2018 will take place on Saturday and Sunday, September 1st and 2nd, at Storybook Farm in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.  Four more bands to be announced.  For more information, please visit us at www.progday.net.

KARMIC JUGGERNAUT To Play ProgDay 2018!

"Damn!  Just got turned onto this amazing psychedelic progressive jazzy band and am BLOWN AWAY!  I’m definitely now a fan and this is also definitely in my Top 10 Of 2018.  Shades of King Crimson, Zappa, Mr Bungle, Bigelf, The Mars Volta, Yes... BRAVO"
- MIKE PORTNOY (Dream Theater, Transatlantic, Winery Dogs, Adrenaline Mob, Sons of Apollo, etc.)

Founded in 2004, KARMIC JUGGERNAUT has spent the past 14 years pursuing the idea of creating music that exists without boundaries, that organically develops based on what a particular tune requires.  This has led the band to evolve from an instrumental four piece outfit to a vocal 6 piece, with a further extended ensemble when required. The result is a collection of eclectic music that combines elements of psychedelic rock, symphonic rock, funk, jazz, blues, jamband, world music, and whatever other genres might be appropriate at the time.

Ultimately the band’s website tags its music as “Progressive Freakout Fusion Rock.”  That sounds about right to us…

Join KARMIC JUGGERNAUT, ALEC K. Three more bands to be announced.  For more information, please visit us at www.progday.net.

GEPH Performs at ProgDay 2018!

"This stuff is clever, sophisticated, at times joyous, in others, heavy, even, in places, creepy... If you like Brand X, Bruford, Aphex Twin and the more Frippertronic side of Robert Fripp, then I reckon you’ll like this. Brilliant."
- Phil Lively, THE PROGRESSIVE ASPECT

GEPH is a Boston-based trio of two Chapman Sticks and drums. The band formed in 2014 with the idea of exploring composition and arranging music in a heavy, intense musical environment.  The result has been two albums of instrumental music combining elements of fusion, metal, and symphonic rock.  Compared to bands ranging from Animals As Leaders to a mashup of King Crimson and Tool, the music can be serene or heavy, dissonant or melodic, ambient or in-your-face.  GEPH will be performing their new recently released album, Apophenia, at ProgDay 2018.

Join GEPH, KARMIC JUGGERNAUT, ALEC K. Two more bands to be announced.  For more information, please visit us at www.progday.net.

OVRFWRD Plays ProgDay 2018!

"It is impossible to classify it. I don't find any other group to which I could refer. Heavy influences, space influences, jazz-rock influences... are obvious with others!…You just need to like instrumental music with complex structures and technical maestria. If you really are prog fanatics, you can only be hypnotized."
- Kjart, PROGARCHIVES

OVRFWRD formed in 2012. The original idea was for the band to be a vocal quintet, but the singer never showed up for the recording sessions and the band decided to move forward as an instrumental quartet. The resulting music is a wide-ranging  mixture of symphonic rock, fusion, classical, space rock, hard rock and metal, that owes more to the band members' diverse and complex backgrounds and musical influences than to any particular genre or sound.  With comparisons to bands as varied as Djam Karet, Discipline, King Crimson, Electric Asturias, and Spock’s Beard, OVRFWRD’s music is a journey that’s dramatic, powerful and beautiful.

Join OVRFWRD, GEPH, KARMIC JUGGERNAUT, ALEC K. More to come.  For more information, please visit us at www.progday.net.

EDENSONG with Special Guest Stefan Paolini at ProgDay 2018!

"A great example of the contemporary face of progressive rock."
- Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull)

EDENSONG’s beginnings date back to the 1990s and the progmetal band Echoes Of Eden.  When that group disbanded, James Byron Schoen decided to form a new band.  The ultimate result was EDENSONG.

Releasing The Fruit Fallen in 2008, the band’s initial release was a wonderfully eclectic mix of folk, classical, rock, progmetal and world music.  Their second studio album, Years In The Garden Of Years, continued to develop their unique sound and ended up on many “Best Symphonic Albums of the Year” lists for 2016.  When keyboardist Stefan Paolini departed in 2017, rather than find another keyboard player, EDENSONG furthered their eclecticism by bringing virtuoso koto player Kento Iwasaki into the fold.   The band is currently working on their third studio album.

To make their ProgDay return as distinctive as possible, Stefan Paolini will be reuniting with EDENSONG at ProgDay as a special guest for a special performance.

Join EDENSONG, OVRFWRD, GEPH, KARMIC JUGGERNAUT, ALEC K. For more information, please visit us at www.progday.net.

PROGDAY 2018: Pär Lindh, King Llama, a Preshow and Film!

--------------

PÄR LINDH Solo Performance!

PÄR LINDH was scheduled to perform a special solo piano performance at ProgDay 2017.  Unfortunately, travel issues prevented him from making the show.  We’re happy to invite him back for ProgDay 2018.

PÄR LINDH’s musical career stretches back to 1977 when he formed Antenna Baroque. In 1979 he founded the symphonic trio Vincebus Ereptum. But with the changing musical times he spent his following years as organist, classical pianist, harpsichordist and drummer. While successful, he missed the calling of progressive rock.

Beginning with his return to Sweden in 1989, he resurrected his early symphonic spirit with a band called Manticore, built the Crimsonian Label studio, and chaired The Swedish Art Rock Society. In 1994 he released the first Pär Lindh Project album, Gothic Impressions. The rest, as they say, is history.

PÄR LINDH has a long established reputation as a composer, master keyboardist, and musical interpreter. For his ProgDay appearance, PÄR will be performing solo and paying tribute to the late Keith Emerson and Greg Lake, performing music from ELP, the Pär Lindh Project, and more.

--------------

KING LLAMA at ProgDay 2018!

This California instrumental fusion power trio came together with the idea of combining eclectic stylings from the history of adventurous music.  What resulted is a mix of rock, jazz, funk, fusion, and a touch of hip-hop that brings to mind a range of music from King Crimson and Phish, to Yes and Rush.  The band has toured extensively, taking their music from Illinois to Argentina, and honing their sound at individual shows and numerous festivals.  KING LLAMA will be performing music from their album Return To Ox.

--------------

FRIDAY NIGHT PRESHOW:  INTERSTELLAR OVERDRIVE with special guest JIMMY ROBINSON!

INTERSTELLAR OVERDRIVE is committed to presenting the full Pink Floyd audio/visual experience with music spanning the band's entire history. This year's preshow will feature full album performances of Animals and Dark Side Of The Moon.

ProgDay attendees will remember ProgDay alumni JIMMY ROBINSON not only for his wonderful fusion band Woodenhead, but also as a master guitarist known for his impressive and emotional performances on acoustic guitar. Jimmy will be opening the preshow with a 45 minute solo performance.

For more details, please visit the Preshow page (http://www.progday.net/ProgDay-Preshow.html) on the ProgDay website.

--------------

ROMANTIC WARRIORS IV - KRAUTROCK!

As part of the 2018 ProgDay Program, we are pleased to announce a FREE screening of a 30-minute segment of the upcoming feature documentary, Romantic Warriors 4 – Krautrock (Part 1), by Adele Schmidt and José Zegarra Holder. The screening is part of an IndieGoGo Fundraising Campaign that the filmmakers will launch in late August to raise finishing funds for the film. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers.

When: Saturday, September 1, 9:30pm.
Where: Hotel Comfort Inn University Durham,
3508 Mt. Moriah Rd., Durham, NC 27707

--------------

Join PÄR LINDH, KING LLAMA, EDENSONG, OVRFWRD, GEPH, KARMIC JUGGERNAUT, ALEC K. For more information, please visit us at www.progday.net.

It was a very good weekend for music and friends even if the heat and humidity was rather draining by the end of the day. The clear highlight of the weekend for me was Alec K Redfearn & The Eyesores with an excellent set of material from the new album and selections from earlier stuff. Sound was great and it was nice to hear the French Horn more forward in the mix than I'm used to hearing from them.

Other musical highlights of the weekend included Pixie Ninja, who had a fairly short set, apparently they just have their one albums worth of material. I would have happily listened to them stretch out and jam a bit or play a cover. Karmic Juggernaut were fun with a Thank You Scientist & Mars Volta vibe with loads of energy, I personally could have done without the puppet show. Soften The Glare were pleasant enough fun fusiony metal stuff. Geph are a Boston based band I don't know, their dueling sticks were entertaining with a heavier vibe that the similarly equipped Stick Men.

No bands were a disappointment though some were more in the good to listen to live but unlikely to buy camp. As usual ProgDay was very well run, the new food vendor was great and Star Points beer selections good & interesting. Had a fun beer swap with lots of good stuff to sample.

Great to see so many friends at the festival. Had a great time.

^ f**king A Ian...  Redfearn and the Eyesores were boss.   Loving that new album btw,  listening to it on the way back to the hotel yesterday, several more times on the drive home and just listened to it again. Great album

and couldn't agree more,  her french horn was really up in the mix and absolutely loved it.  If I had been as .. umm...  out of body and mind yesterday as i was Saturday i might have got up and done some dancing.  That music really grabs you in deep places and entrances you.

I'll touch on it in my review but I do think 5 bands a day pushed it a bit too far... on top of the heat which is almost always a factor. I think Michael realized that as well and hopefully next year we go back to 4. You would think the more the better, but just don't think it really worked out that well, not in that setting. Really wasn't fair in a way to the closing bands.  You as a listener had nothing left for them, so many did, as we did, literally check out on them.

As Ian touched on, it was f**king brutal out there, especially on Saturday. Whew... first time in years we had to retreat to the car for AC and think I missed completely a band on Saturday. Time can get a bit fuzzy mid afternoon on the surface of the sun and when you hit the 3rd or 4th 6 pack of high octaine gas haha..

I agree with my other half that five bands a day were too many, especially with that kind of weather. This did each day's closing act a disservice, because by that time people were already exhausted and ready to leave. I know that, by 6.15 at the latest, I was unable to absorb any more music, and all I wanted was to have a shower and some food.

Though I will always be immensely grateful to the organizers for all their hard work and dedication, and will continue to support the festival for as long as I can, I feel this year's lineup suffered from a few issues. First of all, too many bands that sounded similar, and not enough balance between instrumental-only bands and those with vocals. The bands that had the misfortune to play in the early afternoon (Pixie Ninja in particular) had to deal with the effects of the unrelenting heat and humidity on most of the crowd.

On the other hand, I am aware that most of my issues with this year's edition had to do with my own inability to concentrate on most music. Nowadays it takes much more than it did in the past to hold my attention, and only two bands out of ten managed to do that this year. In any case, I believe it was a good move on the organizers' part to spotlight so many US based bands - even though they know as well as I do that this is the perfect recipe to alienate many prog fans. The main problem was, as I have already stated, a certain lack of diversity - that diversity that, in my view, has always been one of ProgDay's strengths.

Some of my reservations also have to do with the general mood of this year's edition, which I found oddly subdued. For the first time, I noticed a cliquish bent in many of the attendees, rather than that "family" atmosphere I had always found so endearing and refreshing. However, as I said before, the fault may well lie with me and my diminished social skills. In spite of all that, I am still looking forward to next year's edition.

Pixie Ninja.. yeah I think that is the band I completely missed... between the heat and pitching a 6 pack due to preceding awesomeness of Karmic Juggernaut. Getting old sucks...  yet another reason to limit it to 4 bands.  We ain't getting younger.. big differences between killing 4 six packs and 5 plus hitting the Korean booze (that stuff was awesome btw) for dinner afterward hahah

I'm still away from home so I can only post short messages via my cell phone, so I'll make this short...

Thanks to the organizers (Michael B. and company) for another tremendous show. Special thanks to the ProgDay'ers who made my wife and I feel at home: Ian, Michael & Raph, Connie & the Captain, Chris B., and numerous others whose names slipped thru the gaping sieve I call a memory. Thanks to you we all had a great time and plan to return next year (health and well being permitting).

I'll post some observations about the bands next week when we return home and I have a full size keyboard and fonts readable without a magnifying glass.

f**king Captcha...

anyhow..   it was a real pleasure to meet the two of you. A real highlight of the weekend is the friends. Seeing old ones, meeting new ones.  Hopefully next year we can get the two of you in on our dinner party set.  This year wasn't quite as wild, the heat man, but we still rocked it.   Got the chance to eat and talk with Par Lindh.  I guess he had heard how rocking our dinners were and invited himself to join us haha.  Helluva guy, real sweetheart.

Had a fine time with you nutters. It was another great festival, and I went in knowing none of the bands (though I’d heard great things about Redfearn, the others were complete unknowns to me). It’s a great place to discover many groups just on the brink of what passes for Fame in the prog rock world.

Glad as always to see everyone. This is only my 3rd visit (in a row!) to PD since the first few in the 90s. Glad I could finally make it back. Had to gently convince my extended family to hold their annual get-together on a different weekend. Turns out my wife was of a similar mind; she had always wanted to go to Dragon Con in Atlanta that weekend. So we co-conspired to make it happen.

OK, so this is a little late, but it's been a real roller coaster ride after ProgDay... vacation in Asheville, broken transmission on my car, funeral for a best friend in PA, and my 60th BD party. But here are my observations regarding this year's lineup at ProgDay...

None of the bands were known to me prior to their announcement for ProgDay (except for Par Lindh who I only knew from last year's ProgDay announcement). As I usually do, I listened to samples wherever I could find them, and formed some opinion of whether I would enjoy their performance or not. Oddly (or maybe not) most of my preconceived notions were completely turned around!  Bands that I thought I would love to hear live were disappointing, and bands that I didn't really care for became my favorites of the show.  A brief synopsis...

Ovrfwrd - I liked (and purchased) two of their studio albums, but their live performance left me wanting. They came across a little bit like a garage band or a jam band. Their compositions didn't shine as much as on their studio albums. Not as tight. But I still dig their music, and enjoy their studio work.

Par Lindh - Wow, what can be said? Fantastic keys, and a breadth of styles including classical, prog, blues, honky tonk, rag time, etc. His tribute to Emerson was touching.

Pixie Ninja - I didn't care for their studio work, so I took the opportunity to cool off in an air conditioned car.  I missed a lot of their performance. From what I did see, I really liked the bass guitar.

Karmic Juggernaut - This band was the big surprise for me.  After listening to some of their studio albums, I thought I would not enjoy their performance. Exactly the opposite happened! For me, it was the best performance of the weekend. Great bass, guitar, flute, vocals. Intriguing compositions. And the Cookie Monster sang! I'm looking for their setlist so I can buy the appropriate albums.

Soften the Glare - I loved Bon Lozaga's work with Pierre Moerlen, but his performance just didn't grab my attention.  On the other side of the stage, however, the bassist just blew me away!  I couldn't stop focusing on him the whole performance. Bright red hair aside -- the dude can wail on the bass. I gotta find some more of his work.

King Llama - Didn't care for them before. Don't care for them now. I thought they were just loud and noisy. No finesse. But that's just my ignorant opinion...

Alec K. Redfern - Another band that I thought I would not like (I'm not a big fan of RIO-type prog, but I do enjoy some now and then). They were absolutely captivating!  If someone asked my to describe their music I'd have to say "Klaus Schultz got together with Frank Zappa to play some zydeco music". On my purchase list now.

GEPH - I kinda liked these guys going in, and feel the same way now.  I like their heavy dark prog, but it comes across as a little noisy at times. A little more finesse in their dynamics would have sold me completely.

Fernando Perdoma - I like Fernando's personality, but I didn't find his guitar work particularly engaging. I liked his work with Dave Kerzner, so in fairness, I should give him another listen (or two).

Edensong - I absolutely love their studio albums, but their live performance was lackluster. I think they suffered from being the last band to perform while half the audience was either gone, or tearing down. I left my canopy and chairs untouched until they finished, BTW. The threat of a thunderstorm didn't help, and I think they were really hurt by the (bad) mixing job.  Whether it was their fault, or the mixer's, I don't know. I couldn't hear the keyboards or Koto. What a shame. Their studio work is still one of my recent favorites though!

All in all, my wife and I had a great time. Heard some new music. Made some new friends. She's already talking about attending next year! Woo hoo!
