popular when they came out(played on the radio a fair amount), but now never get played. The song Physical by Olivia Newton John comes to mind for me. I remember it being really popular in the early 80's and hearing it a lot. But now.. nothing! Maybe it was decided that the lyrics were too risqué or something, who knows. There are two radio stations around me that play mostly 80's music, and I literally never hear that song on them. Anyway, what are your thoughts and what other songs(if any) do you remember hearing on the radio when they came out, but now(for whatever reason) never get played.

Not exactly popular songs that vanished, but still a related prog story...
Beginning in the mid 70's, the biggest rock radio station in San Jose was KOME. They had a big tie to prog with the DJ Greg Stone and his Sunday night prog radio show, "Stone Trek". For both Going for the One & Tormato, KOME played the albums in full the night they were released! That should give an idea of how huge Yes was back then on rock radio. Anyway, that was obviously the last time I ever heard Awaken, Parallels, Future Times, Release Release or On the Silent Wings of Freedom again on radio
Along the same lines, on Christmas eve of 1976 KOME played a radio simulcast recording of the Genesis Trick of the Tail tour show recorded earlier that year in Pittsburgh! Obviously that was the one and only time I ever heard Robbery, Assault & Battery on the radio

Yeah, not exactly what I was talking about but thanks for sharing.. that sounds like an awesome radio station. Is it still around?

Another one is On The Loose by Saga. I distinctly remember that playing on the radio in the early 80's, but now as far as I can tell it never does.

Of course there was Short People by Randy Newman. Huge hit. Utterly non - politically correct. Blatantly. That was the point!
Disappeared like it never happened.
You can kind of call this revisionist history in music.

Ironically i was in a thrift store today and they were playing 80s diva music. Of all things to emerge was Phyiscal by Olivia Newton-John! Hadn't heard that in a while not that i listen to Olivia or radio much any more but it was a #1 hit in the day

If you like that you should check out 'Silent Knight.' It's a little more consistent imo, strong all the way through.

Haha, my brother and I used to laugh about how much of a 'one hit wonder' they were. Like whenever that subject would come up, one of us would say Kajagoogoo!!! We were pretty young and just silly. Anyway it is a cool song though, surprised they didn't have more hits.

"One Tin Soldier" - Coven
"The Night Chicago Died" - Paper Lace
"Longfellow Serenade" - Neil Diamond
"Werewolves in London" - Warren Zevon
anything by the Kinks, Greg Kihn Band or Jackson Browne.
Used to hear these all the time in the mid-70s but I haven't heard any of them in years.

I remember hearing "99" by Toto an awful lot on easy rock radio back in the early 80s. I still hear a few of their other hits quite a bit, but never that one. Shmaltz, but with nostalgic value.

That one and Wind Him Up still get played fairly frequently here in Canada - mostly because classic rock stations (well, all radio stations) here need to get their quota of Canadian content.

Nah, KOME shut down back in '98...Greg Stone stayed on SF bay area radio until around 2004...

They did have a few, but none as high up the charts as Too Shy. Big Apple was another good one.

I recall Rick Wakeman had a couple of tunes they played on the airwaves for a brief moment in history, but they flopped I guess : White Rock and Elizabethan Rock, from memory. Rock Wakeman, anyone ??

They were probably more popular in Europe. Where I grew up(upstate NY), I only ever remember hearing that one song from them.

Rock 'n' Roll (Part 2) - a great instrumental stomper from the early 70s glam rock scene by some guy called Gary Glitter. Never hear it anymore on radio or TV - can't think why?

Jump Into the Fire by Harry Nilsson. Such a great and unique song. I just loved it when I was about 12, still do. First album I ever bought. I still catch a glimpse of it once in a while but it's always in a commercial or bumper music on a talk show, never being played on the radio.

Gary Glitter has a 20+ year history of pedophilia and child sex abuse, is a lifetime registered sex offender in the UK, and is banned in more than 20 countries. That may have something to do with radio stations not wanting to play his songs anymore ...

I think you're right, that one literally never plays on the radio anymore.
