Steely Dan always produced superbly crafted, polished music, It reminds me of being about 14, driving around with my brother in his old open top Truimph car in the summertime! Happy memories!
RIP Walter.

Just saw that one half of the duo that made up the core of what we've called "Steely Dan" for the past 46 years passed away today.
I have been a devoted fan of the Dan since I heard the first sounds/notes of "Do It Again" in my parents' car in the autumn of 1972. I was under its spell from the beginning--though I defiantly--and errantly--declared that what I was listening to had to be Santana.
Those first three albums, "Can't Buy a Thrill," "Countdown to Ecstasy," and, especially, "Pretzel Logic" were extraordinarily influential to the formation of musical tastes for me and my brothers in those early 1970s. RIP Walter.

Mine as well! I can play the intro solo (by Elliott Randall), but get lost quickly!
SD had amazing guitarists & musicians....Lee Ritenour, Larry Carlton etc. were all blazing jazz-rock artists!
Hell, EVERYONE in the recording studio/on the stage were top-notch talent, including Becker and Fagan!
RIP & thanks for the tunes, Mr. Becker!

He will really be missed. I'd put the first 7 Steely Dan albums up against the first 7 by ANY artist, and I've thought that for years.

RIP Walter Becker | Damn right. Seven consecutive albums without a single weak track. I don't know of any comparable run in popular music.

The Dan was coming to my town in 2 weeks, and I was thinking, I'd get to see them for the first time in my life. Ironic that I was thinking about seeing them before I died.
Gave the taste to play the whole 11 Tracks of Whack.

It's funny, there is some music that when you hear it instantly transports you to another place and time. Rikki Done Lose That Number is one of those pieces for me. Every time I hear it, I am immediately transported to my childhood home, sitting at the top of the stairs, doing homework. I use to come home from school and do my homework while sitting at the top of the stairs, listening to the radio. For some reason, this is the song that stuck with that memory. It is a good memory of a simpler time...

^ Good call. Their most eclectic album imo, and Major Dude.. Barrytown always makes for a terrific one-two punch. All around great album!

Fantastic Guitarist (and bassist) big influence on my own playing, left behind a legacy of music that I can't see any band matching anytime soon. Who else can infiltrate pop music with jazz?
