For the last days I've been repeatedly listening to the recent Grimspound of Big Big Train and boy, I can tell you this:
What a GREAT GREAT MUSIC these guys put out, again, only a year after their excellent last Folklore.

And more - they make a sure step forward, modernizing in a good way their sound, now less pastoral but clearly still with their own recognizable watermark.

I bought the album online in HiRes and been listening with headphones to capture the fine details of the mixing.

Superb !!!!

I was really surprised they've put out another album so soon after Folklore. As usual, I'm waiting for the vinyl edition to be released.

It does not happen too often that a band releases two superb albums within a year and that the second is even better than the first, but Big Big Train have placed themselves in a row with Genesis (Nursery Cryme / Foxtrot), Yes (Fragile / Close to the Edge) and Van der Graaf Generator (Godbluff / Still Life).

Camel released Moonmadness 11 months after the Snow Goose.

I actually prefer Folklore, but Grimspound is still excellent.

Grimspound is awesome. Folklore is better.

Jury's still out, but I can tell Grimpsound is a real grower.

I can't enough of Grimspound.  Grimspound grows on me a tad slower than Folklore but that's not a bad thing.  Grimspound is more varied then Folklore.  Perhaps this is because of the inclusion of additional composers.  I like...I like a lot.

Hi there JoseSmile
I see you've completely fallen for Big Big Train. If you're keen on the whole Genesis sound they commandeer I recommend you check out the Italian band The Watch as well:

I'm sure Genesis released TRick and WAW in the same year too (1976)

Guess I need to jump aboard this train, I have not heard any of their material, will go out on the interweb and see if the music hits me.

I heard The Underfall Yard and the two English Electric before and it was not my thing. Too comfy for my taste and I found the albums really long. If you guys enjoy their music, I'm sure it's an exciting year.

Hi there David

Nice to hear from you, and what a nice suggestion aswell, thku my friend Thumbs Up

I have to confess one of the reasons I fall so eagerly for BBT is the vocal rendition of that guy Loudon which to my ears blends so nicely with such a complex and personalized "signature" sound they consistentely create for some time now (including a superb work on chorus vocals)

It's much of a contemplative vibe, more appropriate for the Fall/Winter season than to Spring/Summer - I suggest you wait until late October and then give it a re-try Big smile

^ I think I listened to them in the Summer, I'll keep that in mind (and maybe listen to half an album at a time). Well, I do like Neo during the Winter.

I liked the two English Electric albums but Folklore seemed a bit boring for me at times....haven't heard the new one yet.
So many albums and so little time to buy them all.

I must admit that I don't care much for either band as they straddle a bit too close to Genesis for my tastes, but I have quite a few friends into both.
I think both bands sound like classic era Genesis; Big Big Train with Collins on vocals (ca Trick of the Tail) and The Watch still with Gabriel
I am glad you're digging them though - always warms my heart when I see folks (of any age) fall in love with music. 'Tis a beautiful thing.

Thumbs Up

I bought both English electric lps, Folklore and Grimspound on vinyl but have found myself increasingly less enthusiastic.. Terribly well made, beautiful iinstrumentation and arrangements but somehow i feel ive heard it before and did someone say 'a bit comfy'? i have decided to revisit them at a later date.. age related cynisism no doubt..
