When I see those five albums I see five brilliant pieces of music that any group would be lucky to have as part of their career. It's not just that though. It's five straight albums of great music. Sure, you can even include Caress of Steel, but I think that comes behind the other five. To me, that five album run is one of the best in prog history. Can anyone think of any other runs that match up with it? I'm sure there are a few. I can't even say Pink Floyd. You do have Dark Side, Wish You Were Here, Animals, and The Wall, which is arguably the best four album run in music history. Flanking that you have Obscured by Clouds (good but not great) and The Final Cut, so you can't say five. Does Yes have five great albums in a row? The Beatles (if you want to call all of their stuff prog, which it isn't)? Let's see what everyone has. I think this will be an interesting discussion. -------------

I've not seen any better yet than Gentle Giant's eight album run: Gentle Giant, Acquiring The Taste, Three Friends, Octopus, In A Glass House, The Power And The Glory, Free Hand, Interview. All outstanding albums, no song that I don't love off those. ------------- |

Genesis: Foxtrot, SEBTP, The Lamb.., Trick of the tail, Wind & Wuthering. You could argubaly take it back to Nursery Cryme. But yes, I agree 2112 - Moving Pictures was an excellent almost flawless run for Rush..  ------------- Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy! |

I agree with everything so far. I would add Nursery Crime ( It's my favorite) "prog related" - Led Zeppelin's 6 album run from their debut thru " Physical Graffiti" is pretty impressive. |

Yes: The Yes Album Fragile Close To The Edge Tales From Topographic Oceans Relayer Depending on who you ask, you could even extend that to Going For The One. I agree about King Crimson. As for Yes, TFTO breaks that run of excellence for me. There are fantastic parts to that work, notably The Revealing Science of God which for me is up there with the track CTTE and Awaken, but there is a lot on TFTO I can take or leave. ------------- Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy! |

| AFTK was probably their first real full blown prog album (imo)but I can see why people start the run with this album since it is the one that first really got them attention. |

I like some of the other suggestions people mentioned. There are even a few I need to explore more myself. I figured Yes, Genesis, and Queen would get mentioned.
I'm a big KC fan. It really is hard to ignore any of their earlier work, especially the first album which really does make me weep with how good it is.
Don't get me wrong guys. PF are my second favorite band and just about everything they've done is gold to me. I guess I was looking more for quintessential albums from a band and not just great releases.
I don't know how to process that. -------------

Regarding the quintessential albums: it is all down to taste. I would agree, that 2112 - Moving Pictures (but MP is on the way out I reckon, nowhere near as good as the four previous releases). Tommy, Who's Next, Quadrophenia, The Who By Numbers, Who Are You is probably their best five album run, but Who By Numbers is no where near the other four.

I think it's more than taste. Are you able to understand why something is viewed upon as great without feeling that way about it yourself? For example, I really can't stand Led Zeppelin and I think they're overrated. However, I can understand why they appeal to some people. -------------

Because for me, TFTO is a far from perfect album which could have been condensed into a single album of very high quality. It appears they just wanted to make a 'big' epic work for the sake of it and for sections of that work the quality suffered as a result. Wakeman agreed and left the band over it. It could have been the best album in their entire catalogue, but they blew it by putting atmosphere and 'spaceyness' over song writing. IMO. ------------- Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy! |

I absolutely agree. There are some great musical moments on TFTO but the whole thing is far too indulgent and overblown and it probably did more to cement prog's poor reputation than any other album. |
