Well we must all bow down to the collective consensus"Stairway To Heaven" is the greatest guitar solo ever. "Classic Rock Magazine" said so. And now I'm off to a Gulag for thinking Steve Hackett's guitar solo in "Dancing With The Moonlight Knife" is more thrilling and more appropriate to the actual song it's from! And what about "Fracture"?!! Top 10 guitar solos in full. 1. Stairway To Heaven 2. Comfortably Numb 3. Hotel California 4. Freebird 5. All Along The Watchtower 6. Eruption (Van Happen) 7. Killer Queen 8. Sweet Child O'Mine 9. Purple Rain 10.Paranoid. "Paranoid"??? Come on, Iommi has got more interesting solos! And "Eruption" isn't a "solo" as it's understood in rock music - or should we start saying that classical pieces for piano are "piano solos"? |

Well, they're clearly not the best solo's ever even from a subjective postion. They're merely solos from some of the most popular rock songs of all time. That's a somewhat different, but that's what you'd expect from a mainstream rock magazine. They're not going to list Lunar Sea by Camel or Stevie's Spanking by Frank Zappa or something wierd and cerebral by Fripp. As for Guns 'n' Roses most of Slash's solos just irritate me. November Rain is like having yours ears scraped over with a cheese grater. The solo in Paranoid is nothing special either. I guess it was just w=one of the first "Heavy metal" guitar solo's. That said, I do like Pages solo on Stairway and Gilmour on CN is clearly excellent. ------------- Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy! |

I agree with you on Stairway and Comfortably Numb (and having seen Floyd, the CN lead is even better live - very majestic). The dueling leads on Freebird are going to make it onto every generic rock guitar list. But Queen's Killer Queen is a silly choice, particularly when Brighton Rock is on the same album and the solo is still a delight to listen to. P.S. There are many phenomenal Hendrix leads, but the sustained note at the end of All Along the Watchtower is viscerally exciting.

There are so many great solos ....... Clapton with Cream Live doing Crossroads ..... Allman Bros Live doing Whipping Post...Duane and Betts Layla- Derek and Dominoes with Clapton Jeff Beck- Cause we ended as lovers.. BOC- Reaper with Buck Dharma/ Donald Roeser on guitar... Carlos Santana does several great leads on Caravanserai... ------------- One does nothing yet nothing is left undone. Haquin |

He's a very good player, no doubt about that. But Sweet Child... is not even one of their best songs IMO, for instance Estranged was so much better. And many others... |

I think it was chosen because of the distortion in said solo. As for me, I was thinking of adding some Zappa, but, considering that pretty much all of his albums have at least one good solo in them, it's impossible to choose. Okay, okay "Watermelon In Easter Hay" probably has to be at the top. ------------- He looks at this world and wants it all... so he strikes, like Thunderball! |

It's a perfectly good list if you're a casual rock fan who owns fifty albums and thinks that is probably about right. A laughable one for any music enthusiast, I'd say.

Most people know and own 50 albums, which then turns into the entire world of music. That's why you find so many old folks complaining about how bad modern music sucks. The last time they bought a new record was 20 years ago and it was indeed a remastered release of Hotel California. They know everything about music because they hear 20 minutes worth of mainstream radio every day. These people make these kinds of lists...which is perfectly fine. We just need to remember that when we start blaming the list for neglegting some Hungarian guitarist who once did a thrilling 15 minute tooth solo. ------------- “The Guide says there is an art to flying or rather a knack.
