What do you think the best Genesis album is?
I personally think its Selling England By the Pound, but I see some people think Foxtrot is the better album. The Lamb Lies down on Broadway is also a very large contender. I don't think anything Phil Collins did with the band could top those 3 records, either.

I can't pick between Foxtrot and Nursery Cryme. Both albums have a very textured acoustic feel, which I'm a fan of. Oh... and the MELLOTRON! Lots of it.

I want to say The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway because it feels like a full experience from the first song to the last one, not only through the overarching storyline but with the reprising sections that make the songs feel more like they're connected to one another (ex. the Fly on a Windshield/Broadway Melody riff that shows up throughout the album, or the Lamia and Lamb reprises on Light Dies Down).
I can say I'm a fan of albums that present recurring musical themes... Genesis did this a lot in their best albums: Selling England by the Pound begins and ends with the same melody (Moonlit Knight intro and Aisle of Plenty), A Trick of the Tail (another favorite of mine) has Los Endos taking cues from Dance on a Volcano and Squonk, and Wind and Wuthering has a main theme going through Eleventh Earl of Mar, One for the Vine (not sure if I'm right on this one - haven't listened to the track for a while) and Unquiet Slumbers/Quiet Earth/Afterglow.

Trespass. Only Genesis album I can think of without any weak tracks and it was back when Pete's lyrics were down to Earth and made some sense. While Genesis reached higher peaks on other albums, Trespass is the only one where they were consistent.

For me, "Selling England by the Pound". Perhaps "Live at the Rainbow" if it had been officially released complete. It's about the same as "Genesis Live", I got it in the Live Boxed set, but the whole concert is only inlcuded on DVD audio, on CD it only has the songs that were left out of "Live", but as a whole it is great, and I like most of the versions better than the studio ones.

I like Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, Selling England by the Pound, and the Lamb equally. To me, they are the band's seminal works, and which one I like best depends on the hour, day, and lunar phase.
A Tick of the Trail and Windy Weathering also are great, but I don't view them as foundational. After breaking Wind, the band never again rose to such great heights. Trespass certainly is foundational, but I have always felt that Nursery Cryme is where the band found its sea legs.

Seconds Out if anything goes.
My favourite really changes by day and mood.
If i could have only one, today Trick of the Tail would be, but someone online did a track by track comparison with Wind & Wuthering coming out on top and it seemed to make lotsa sense.

Just to be different I'd say Seconds Out. The drums (on the non remaster) always sound superb and the performances sublime. I just wish it had been a 3 LP set. Same as Live should have been a 2 LP thing.
I'd go with Wind And Wuthering for favourite Genesis number (and the least favourite). But for studio masterpiece I'd pick The Lamb on Broadway.

Duke is my favorite.
Second would either be Selling England by the Pound or A Trick of the Tale (so one of those two would be third, too).
Fourth would be Abacab.
Fifth the 1983 self-titled.

I like the Peter Gabriel albums a lot, but overall, I think that both Genesis and Peter Gabriel were better when Peter Gabriel left the band. Those first four self-titled Gabriel solo LPs ("Car", "Scratch", "Melt" and "Security"), plus So and Passion, are some of the best stuff ever.

Musically, The Lamb holds up remarkably well some 41 years after its release. The drawback with it is the album was, rightly, seen as a Gabriel project, rather than previous albums which were group orientated, and it signalled the death knell not only of the band, but also such great big slabs of concept in rock albums for quite a few years.

I love The Lamb. I agree it stands up musically very well after all this time. I share Tony Bank's view opinion of the story though. To me it sounds like the poetic ramblings of a sixth former trying to be 'deep' However, I like the atmosphere of the music and the slightly more grittier edge to the music. When I first bought this album as a teenager I listened to it every day for weeks on the headphones getting totally lost in the music. I couldn't believe that a rock band could have such musical imagination. I think this was the first Gabriel Genesis album I heard.

Agreed Steve. The Lamb is definitely PG's baby. An absolute reign of leadership and creativity on his part...maybe a little too much PG cause the album really did create a division (death knell) in the band. The Lamb is still in my top 3 Genesis albums. Once again though, great music is absolutely timeless.

I've always imagined replacing The Battle Of Epping Forest with Suppers Ready would make SEBTP the ultimate prog album by anyone ever...
But, it's difficult to argue anyway against an album that has The Cinema Show and Firth Of Fifth, and Dancing With The Moonlit Knight.
But Foxtrot and Trick Of The Tail do push it close.
The Lamb...I still don't know....I think it's possible that one day I will think it's the best...but it's still not yet...

3. Nursery Cryme.
4. A Trick Of The Tail.
5. Wind And Wuthering
6. Selling England By The Pound.
7. Trespass
8. Seconds Out.
9. Live.
In my humble opinion Foxtrot is by far their best album. Not one bad moment on that album. Amazing.
SEBTP is overrated, in my humble opinion. Some of it is as good as it gets (Dancing with The Moonlit Knight, Firth Of Fifth) but too much is uninspired or just not quite finished (Epping Forest, After The Ordeal, Cinema Show) and I just don’t dig “I know What I Like In Your Wardrobe” or “More Fool Me.” The latter sucks and the former is just “ok."
The Lamb is incredible. So is Nursery Cryme.
ATOTT is great, Wind and Wuthering is just about as good. Sometimes I like it even more.
Trespass is another very good album and the live stuff is great as well.
Not a fan of anything else. Especially Abacab. One of the worst albums I have ever heard. Bathwater.

Nursery Cryme is their ultimate Album - contains Prog´s best mini-epic "The Fountain of Salmacis".
The most powerful GENESIS songs performed live were "The Knife" and "The Musical Box" back in their creative peak.
These always shook the foundations of venues by sheer GENESIS power. For those who are really interested in experiencing the GENESIS LIVE magic I recommend buying some bootlegs (certain Japanese HIGHLAND CDs are great). The Pound tour 1973-74 especially marks their best ever performances.
Trespass is their most beautiful work, very poetic and pastoral. Unique, strange dreamy yet dense sound. A masterpiece second to none. And sadly Prog´s most underrated album.
Foxtrot, still brilliant and just perfect (flawless). "Supper´s Ready" was another powerhouse epic and really showcased their live magic, band loved to play it and audiences always waited for it... and got it almost every time.

Could not quite get into Lamb like their other albums. The tracks on Lamb seem to lack character IMHO as after 20 minutes of play time was bored to death!! Not sure why? Always a good idea. The "extra" or non LP tracks added, or in some cases replacing the original ones give the albums a new and possibly more correct vision. You get a more um, album experience rather than the heh, compromise of the initial release.

I really don't like dealing in bests, but the Lamb is my favorite for it's sheer weirdness.
------------- Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

Is the question valid. Genesis went through different eras quite quickly and I don't even see too much correlation between Foxtrot and Lamb.
Answer - there is no one best album only ones some may dislike because of what the band are... not.

A Trick of the Tail
For the longest time though I thought it was SEBTP but "more fool me,""I know what I like" and especially "the battle of epping forest" bring it down for me. Still, it has their two best tracks after Supper's Ready in "firth of fifth" and "cinema show."

^ I like both Firth of Filth and Cinema Show more than Supper's Ready.

Between Trespass, Foxtrot and Trick. Gabriel becomes annoying after Fox
------------- All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock.

The Way We Walk live was the first album I owned as a kid. I wore out that cassette. So based purely on nostalgia I'd definitely have to go with that one.

For me, it's 'And then there were Three'....fell in love with 'Many too many', 'Undertow', 'Scenes from a nights dream'....probably the first Genesis album I got into as I was a late comer. Obviously first heard the commercial stuff like 'Invisible Touch' first but when I found ATTW3 I found some magic there.

Er....thank you? I like 'Wind and Wuthering' too.

"Nursery Cryme". Maybe because it was the first I listened. So completely perfect.

Well, Deep in the Motherlode was, I think, the first song that made me prick up my ears and wonder "What is this music?" I still consider it one of their best tunes.
Not as epic as some of their others, but still the sound of mystery and wonder which always draws me to prog.
Many Too Many has one of Rutherford's best solos, and I would place it along a number of Hackett's. But then, IMO, there was a lot of earlier-band pastiche work in ATTW3. Collins tries to make his voice as sentimental as Gabriel on Snowman....
On a completely different note, Battle of Epping Forest is one of my favorites from Selling. In addition, I like Peter seeing baritone harmony on More Fool Me, and really, the acoustic break in style. Aisle is a GREAT revisiting of Moonlit Knight, just enough to leave you lingering with all the great music on the album. And the imagery is the sonic obscuring of the character, through "Tess" who exclaims "I don't belong here" and fades behind a chant of repeated price quotes and advertisements. The transformation is complete.

I'm absolutely sure that "A Trick of The Tail" is the best album Genesis have ever released. On the other hand, "Firth of Fifth" is their greatest individual composition.

From favourite to least favourite
1: Trespass. It took a LONG time for me to come to terms with the production job on it, but the remasters have really cleaned this one up and there's a certain atmosphere to it which is unique.
2: Nursery Cryme. Another one which didn't click with me at first, but bit by bit it's grown on me over the years.
3: A Trick of the Tail. Best thing Phil ever did as frontman.
4: Selling England By the Pound. It was my first Genesis album and my introduction to their prog side, so it'll always be a bit special to me, but I have to admit that the Battle of Epping Forest is a bit much.
5: Wind and Wuthering. Second best thing Phil did as frontman.
6: Foxtrot. Some of the sections of Supper's Ready are a bit goofy, and Get 'em Out By Friday is kind of goofy.
7: The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway. Some great moments that I wouldn't want to be without, but let's face it, as an overall concept it's utter bobbins.
8: Duke, if you just keep it to the "Duke Suite" tracks.
