Sad to hear the passing of Dave Swarbrick. The early Fairport were regulars at Middle Earth, UFO, etc. appearing alongside Pink Floyd and Soft Machine. Swarb was behind the fusion of rock and folk that first came to fruition with 'A Sailor's Life' from Unhalfbricking. 'Sloth' from Full House is arguably the peak of 'prog folk'. In live performances, Swarb always caught the eye - I recall Simon Nicol and Dave Pegg forming a huddle on stage to let Swarb shine. Apparently, electrification gave Swarb hearing problems so after Fairport's demise in 1979, he never really worked again in a full rock context, but continued to produce excellent albums with musicians of the highest calibre. |

Sounds like you lived through those salad days as a fan. I discovered Fairport after the fact but recall some of the things Joe Boyd said about Swarbrick in Boyd's 'White Bicycles' autobiography, including how Dave coached Dave Pegg to get him hired as the band's bassist. Time is flying by and we don't notice ... (hopefully) I saw DS onstage with Fairport a few days after Demetrio (from Area) passed away, and that night they played a song in his hommage. Oh boy, THIS WAS IN 1979 !!!! RIP |

Loved Swarbrick. One of the major components of Fairport's classic lineup. His fiddling on Liege & Lief and the sound of his fiddle were major reasons I gravitated to Fairport at first. ------------- ...a vigorous circular motion hitherto unknown to the people of this area, but destined to take the place of the mud shark in your mythology... |

Underrated and underappreciated.....he was the heart and soul of the Fairports.....no, he was at the heart of the Brit folk movement in general. An innovator, virtuoso and gentleman.....RIP, sir. ------------- I like to feel the suspense when you're certain you know I am there..... |
