Let's give this another go.......... Original IRON MAIDEN vocalist, Paul Di'anno, has been through the wringer several times since his hey-day with Maiden. He is now wheel-chair bound, has been jailed for fraudulent activities, hard-drug abuse recovery and many personal battles......... and he's still adored by millions around the world.......... ........yes, he is a great vocalist (with 'Punk' attitude......) but does he deserve the hate/love he receives..????? I dig the guy and his achievements, but he has been touring on his 'Maiden legacy' for decades now. I dearly love what he did with Maiden, and now I see him in a chair and tattooed up and being a pretentious 'hardcore' dude, I am somewhat disappointed ....... I know there's not many Maiden fans on this board, but, I love those early Maiden recordings and I am shocked and disappointed with way sh*t turned out for Paul. Dickinson flies 747's - Di'anno is in a wheelchair, Bayley has had his share of sh*t over the years. All AMAZING vocalists for a phenomenal super-star 'Progressive Metal' band. I do believe they belong in Prog-Metal whatever..... My choice albums happen to be Killers, The X Factor and Powerslave, without even thinking of the singer (which, at the end of the day, makes the album 'work'......) Who is your choice - with no bias (Bruce is immensely talented beyond belief ......)...........true Maiden afficianadoes will reveal all...........::...

I don't get it, what do I have to do? Express my opinion on the Di Anno period like the thread title says or answer your last question (who is your choice?)

I don't know, the punk feel of Di'Anno and the air siren Dickinson are quite different.
Musically, I find the Di'Anno period more groundbreaking and ferocious. The 80's Dickinson years are also quite creative and interesting, but some tracks can be a bit soapy...

My ultimate fave album will always be The X Factor........ I just think that these guys wouldn't be where they are without Di'anno. I know he can be a Dick (so can I) but IM are an INCREDIBLE band, so........

Well Di'Anno was always a problem, which is why he got sacked by the rest of the band, I think. Most likely this sacking was certainly responsible for a few nails in his future coffin.
Di'Anno was more of a punk (and more punky than Johnny Rotten, Simonon or Burnell would ever be) than he was a metalhead, anyways
But then again, Maiden has turned out as one of the more solid example of corporate rock as well (along with The Stones), since not many bands have had their own plane
Di'Anno for me, but you won't bget me to shed a tear on his destiny.

^ yeah. Hugues, we all choose our paths..........what direction is up to us.........it just devastates me to see Paul in his chair, trying to impress his fans, and knowing what dumb choices he's made, and the fact that he milks his few years with Harris and the boys for his remaining lifetime. It really breaks my heart. I 'love' Di'anno, he was simply AWESOME on those first few MAIDEN releases. So much for the adage of 'it's never too late'.............. As for dear Blaze...................... I loved Maiden since my teen years.... Killers, S/T, Powerslave, Piece Of Mind etc (1987............) .........and now with the chance of having seen the live performance, I just think of the various 'possible' outcomes the band could've had. f**k I obsess over The X Factor, and how Blaze really made that one work. I know there was no future for Maiden had he stayed on, and Steve realised that, so he gave Blaze his marching orders............ I am just so sad for Paul................for what 'could've been'................

I like the first two Maiden albums, esecially Killers. Di'anno was not the great singer Bruce is, but his voice worked well enough with that early material.

Just spinning Virtual XI and loving every bit of it..... Weak from a 'progressive' viewpoint, but actually a kick-ass, Rockin' album. Nothing overly complex, but some involved pieces. Many that Bayley had his heart in. I think that Steve made the brutal decision of booting Blaze out, unfortunately as Brave New World featured some material the band worked on immediately after Virtual XI........

unfortunatlely? Bruce came back with Adrian, everyone was happy, Brave New World is a great album, their best since SSotSS. As for Virtual XI, it's weak from any view point if you ask me. X Factor was great, Virtual was a disaster.

^ No. Just flipped to the 2nd vinyl. Don't Look To The Eyes Of A Stranger. Really good. Futureal, The Clansman, Two Worlds Collide, Eyes Of A Stranger = CLASSIC Maiden. Repetitive choruses, standard-ish structures etc. but it all works with mighty head-banging potential too. I really love this album, but yes, it's a weaker effort from them (3 star). I will spin Koloss (Meshuggah) when this finishes, but I love Maiden with all my heart, Di'Anno, Bayley AND Bruce. And I could never 'sell my soul' to Metal........Not in the 30-odd years I've offered some time to. Only select bands and stylings. But Maiden are No.1. Just following Di'anno recently and am truly disappointed with how sh*t turned out for him. And his douchebag choices..........

I got into Iron Maiden right from their debut album, and they have always been one of my favourite bands. Their first two albums are great, and truly groundbreaking in many ways - and, as Blacksword pointed out, DiAnno's voice was perfect for their early material. However, the guy is a notorious woman abuser, and this makes it hard for me to relate to him. Though art and life should be kept separate as much as possible, sometimes it is difficult to do so.

^ O.K. When I bought the 2LP back in '98, on the grounds of the BRILLIANT X Factor, yes, I was disappointed. But I have grown to really admire it over the many years I've spun it. @ Raff - was Di'anno abusing women ?? I am aware he's many (unsavoury) things but now this......? CURVEBALL.......... Now I've lost ALL respect for him (not that I'm a model citizen......... ) but this is too much. May he get what he deserves................. Raff, how did you find this out ?

He spoke quite candidly about it in his autobiography, The Beast ( http://www.amazon.com/Beast-Singing-Maiden-Drugs-Groupies/dp/1844548848" rel="nofollow - http://www.amazon.com/Beast-Singing-Maiden-Drugs-Groupies/dp/1844548848 ). ^ I've done the 'compare and contrast' thingy of him singing in Maiden in the early 80's (I have a proper VHS of an '81 performance) and seeing him now. I thought he got the sh*t end of the straw, but if he's bashing around beautiful women, then that's it. I will find it hard to spin early Maiden. This is the worst thing...... I'm no 'Angel' but this sh*t is not on and I'm now pretty pissed he was such a w**ker................. I don't care if he has all the drugs he wishes, all dodgey mates etc. but when it comes to being a c**t to the fairer gender.......this, I did NOT want to hear of him..........

Love the first two Maiden albums - in fact I think those are the only ones I continue to play (plus Live after Death which is my fave). Never heard of Di'anno's dark side tbh, but I guess I don't care. I've always been able to distinguish between the music and the person behind it. That's why I still love Bobby Beausoleil's Lucifer Rising (Bobby killed a drug dealer in cold blood supposedly for selling him bum mescalin) and the early Burzum albums.
Then again I know people who feel the exact opposite. My dad for instance will never ever in a million years consider listening to a piece of Wagner music simply because of his affinity for fascism.
It becomes more difficult when this happens in visual media though. Personally I have a hard time watching anything with Bill Cosby in it. Seeing him around the Huxtable kids today is nigh on absurd.

what affinity for fascism? Wagner lived in the 19th century. Nazis (and Hitler) had an obsession for his music.

Wagner was openly antisemite. Sure he lived well before the nazis, but his political views were and are highly compatible with what Hitler was on about. Wagner is not like Nietzsche, who was wrongfully heralded as a 'proto-nazi' for his writings about "the superman". Wagner though was the real deal, a fascist...and a musical prodigy.

and yet I've just read that he had Jewish friends and even some say he had Jewish blood. also some say he had some kind of socialist views as well.

I've just read an article on the relevance of Wagner's anti-Semitism and the controversy around that. The article says Wagner was extremely envious about the Jewish composers of his time and their success which brought him bitterness and as consequence his attack on them and Jewish music. Is that true or just another point of view, I don't know.

If his singing style and approach wasn't so 'limited', not to say 'attitude' too, he wouldn't have been booted from Maiden. Things would be very different for him now.

It's obvious why he was booted out of Maiden. But I do prefer his style on the Maiden albums. No doubt Bruce Dickinson is a technically more accomplished singer but he also kind of combines the worst aspects of Dio and David Byron put together so that it's really not my cuppa. Of course Bruce is so energetic live he can hold the attention of a 30000 plus audience and do it night after night. Doesn't look like Paul Di'Anno was really cut out for that.

I like the debut album, Killers not so much. But my favorite Maiden era is with Bruce, easily, wether it's the 80's or the 2000's, a lot of great material in both. I think few bands in rock have been as consistent as Maiden. SSOASS, Somewhere in Time, TNOTB, Book of Souls, Brave New World, Powerslve, Final Frontier, etc. So many great albums. I do think The X Factor is a really great album, and the live verions of Sign of the Cross or The Clansman with Bruce are terrific. Virtual XI I find mediocre but not bad.

Paul was more aggressive and rough edged. Also sounded great on the few melodic numbers they did on those two albums, where he sounded more understated, uncanny than Bruce. That said, from Piece of Mind onwards, Maiden tailored their music for Bruce's style of singing and I do think something like Aces High would have been out of Paul's range.

Imagine had Paul been on-board for The Number Of The Beast. The song Invaders would've been perfect for Paul right of the bat. Much of the music on the album is still in 'Killers' style, I think.

He would fit Invaders, Run to the Hills or The Prisoner, but I can't imagine him singing Hallowed be thy Name, Children of the Damned or 22 Acacia Avenue as great as Bruce does.

Yep, and it's a shame because he was such a wonderful comic even years before the show. His LPs were pure gold and to think the whole time he was drugging and raping women is heartbreaking. He of course deserves whatever punishment he gets, but it's another hero gone. Makes Michael Richards look like a saint.

That sums it up pretty well for me. I also don't think Maiden becomes truly great with Di'anno as lead singer. Bruce gave them something that Paul never could. I'm not sure we're even talking about Iron Maiden if Bruce never joined the band. I'm not suggesting that Bruce is the be-all or end-all but I think his effect on the band is obvious

Nice to see a thread about Maiden here! Well, Paul may not be the greatest singer Maiden ever had, but my favourite album by them happens to be ''Killers'', and my favourite song ''Phantom of the Opera''. Paul had a very distinctive voice that worked perfectly for the early material. ''Murders in the Rue Morgue'', ''Remember Tomorrow'', ''Transylvania'', ''Genghis Khan'', ''Strange World'', ''Purgatory''... Oh man, too many great songs! For some reason, I always thought the guitar riffs were a lot more creative, technical and diverse on these first two albums, and let's not forget the unbelievable drumwork by Clive Burr! Seriously, that man was a machine, much better than Nicko (who's no slouch himself )... I also really like their stuff with Blaze, especially The X Factor, a really, really fine album! I wish people would listen to the non-Bruce albums more, and give them the credit they deserve! But of course, the Bruce era has its fair share of masterpieces, "Somewhere In Time'' being my personal favorite. I can totally see why he is the most popular as a frontman, as he is a superb singer and such a nice guy too. Paul, on the other hand... Doesn't really look like the kind of guy you'd enjoy being around too much, especially these days. But he was very talented, no doubt. Di'Anno Maiden!!! \m/ \m/

Dickinson is my favorite Maiden vocalist, but I love Di'Anno and I like Bayley well enough, too.
The first two albums, the self-titled and Killers, the two with Di'Anno on vocals, are my favorite Maiden albums, though. Not just because of Di'Anno, obviously (since I like Dickinson more), but I just like the tunes and the vibe on them more than anything else they did.
I love them overall, but after the two Di'Anno albums, the next three, Number of the Beast, Piece of Mind and Powerslave, would round out my top five. A couple of the 90s albums, especially, were relatively weak, but they haven't done an album I don't enjoy.
Their career path and their quality arc reminds me a lot of both Saxon and Motorhead, two other NWOBHM bands I love overall.

I couldn't care less about any moral or character flaws any artist might have, by the way. That has zero impact on my opinion of their work. I don't judge Adolf Hitler's paintings any differently just because he was Hitler. I wouldn't judge anyone's work any differently even if they'd committed crimes against me or my family.

What puzzles in the game of the comparison between Di'Anno and Dickinson is that, while the songs of the 2 first LPs are written by the same composers of the rest of the repertoire, it sounds like it was written for the voice of Di'Anno: each time I hear Dickinson's take on "Iron Maiden" (the song), it doesn't sound as... adequate as the Di'Anno version.
It reminds me that I really, really should go and listen to Life After Death to have a better "view" on the differences of the two voices...
