average starrating per band: 4

some outstanding choices there (Yes, Genesis, Magma, Gentle Giant, VDGG, Hawkwind, King Crimson, Henry Cow, Amon Duul, Can, Nathional Health, Gong, Pink Floyd)

but I miss bands like Camel, Kansas, Queen, Rush, Caravan, Marillion, Arena, Pendragon, IQ, Clepsydra, Echolyn, Like Wendy Ayreon, Angra, Threshold, Moody blues, Jethro Tull, and some others,

if those were included I would rate it 4,5, omit some from your list for a higher rating

We have Caravan and Jethro Tull; I forgot to mention them (and I am sure I forgot a lot of others). Marillion is not our cup of tea, as is most other neo prog (we have listened to Clepsydra, Pendragon and IQ; no thanks. The rest of the neo-prog bands you mentioned I can say nothing about). Rush is not to our liking, at least not what we have heard of them so far. The same is true for Kansas. Oh, and Camel are too mainstream for our taste. We even have their albums up to "Rain Dance", but none of them really convince us.

BaldFriede,

Great Planet Gong photo   What a party I'm sure that was!!!

Not surprisingly, many of the same artists/bands are in my completionist listing as well. Not many Italian bands noted however.

Obviously very strong in the German category. (Is it not PC to use Krautrock as a term? That's what we used to call it here in the states, but I wanted to check...)

Any Eastern European stuff....Collage, After Crying, Omega, Plastic People, FSB, SBB, etc.

Kewl list

Sorry but you don't have any metal , that certainly takes 2 stars away immediately! If you had some Black Sabbath in there or something it'd be better..

BUT the fact that you have Tangerine Dream albums makes me add an extra star. And as the prog bands on the list are pretty stellar I would say 4 stars and that's a very good rating!

No, we are not really into metal. The closest to metal we have are High Tide and Hawkwind, but we like them for other qualities than that (though the metal aspect of them is ok with us).

We have virtually EVERYTHING of and related to the following bands (including solo albums of members and spin-off bands):

Agitation Free
Anima

Annexus Quam

Amon Düül (in all incarnations)
Art Bears
Ash Ra Tempel

Brand X
Can
Cluster
Clearlight I will get my first record next week
Deep Freeze Mice
Dzyan
Embryo
Faust

Genesis (with some exceptions here; we stopped after "Seconds Out" and only have all solo albums of Steve Hackett and Peter Gabriel and some of Anthony Phillips)

Gentle Giant

Gong up to YOU

Gryphon
Guru Guru
Harmonia
Hawkwind
Henry Cow
Hoelderlin
Jade Warrior
King Crimson
Kraan
Magma
National Health

Nektar
Pink Floyd
Tangerine Dream (including the solo albums of Froese, Baumann, Schulze, Joliffe, Krüger and Schnitzler. The last one only partially though, since a lot of his albums exist in very limited edition only).

Van der Graaf Generator (of course the solo albums of Hammill too, as well as projects of other band members)

Yes

That's the basis, and I may have forgotten a few; it's just what comes to my mind right now. There is a lot missing; this is just an overview. Also I only listed prog bands. Of some of the mentioned bands we are shy an album or 2, because they are quite rare, but we try to get hold of them too. I may add the odd band from time to time when I think of it . I deliberately left out a lot of obscurities, of whom only 1 or 2 albums exist, since that would take too long. All in all over 600 vinyls and over 1100 CDs.

You must have forgotten Hatfield and the North ?

Excellent collection, but you knew I'd say that anyway. Not much of the further flung Canterbury/RIO scene (The Muffins, French TV, Birdsongs of the Mesozoic, The Residents, Sammla Mammas Manna, Univers Zero and so on) and Magma seem to be the only Zeuhl act, so I'll knock my rating down to 4.5 stars (plus I'm jealous of your comprehensive Krautrock selection).

Alrighty, you could check mp3s from these seminal Italian groups:

Banco del Mutuo Soccorso (the early albums)
Premiata Forneria Marconi (the early albums)

...and these "heavier" groups:

Museo Rosenbach
Biglietto per L'inferno

There are many more but I think these are good ones to try first. If you don't like any of these it is not your thing then.

The Deep Freeze Mice, by the way, are one of the most obscure prog bands of all times; even those who are into very obscure and experimental bands mostly have not heard them. I highly recommend them though.
Here a link to a good page for them: http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/strebor84/site_dfm.htm - http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/strebor84/site_dfm.htm

For starters I recommend "Rain Is When the Earth Is Television".

Also worth considering in the Italian vein:

Le Orme (Uomo di Pezza, Felona e Sorona, Contrappunti, Collage, and In Concerto)
Osanna (Landscape of Life, l'uomo, and Palepoli)
Celeste (Principe di giorno)
il Balletto di Bronzo (YS)
Semiramis (Semiramis)

If you find you like the genre, you can find more about Italian stuff in The Return of Italian Pop.

I was sure here is a five page list, which I could spend my whole day on. Well...

Amon Düül (in all incarnations) - I have only heard "Phallus Dei" by Amon Düül 2, which I truly liked. I'm working on checking the rest of them, as I have time.
Ash Ra Tempel - Their freeform psychedelic improvisations are my absolute favourites!
ELP - Their 1st and "Pictures at an Exhibition" are suberb
Genesis - "Trespass" is my favourite, two next are also good.
Gentle Giant - I have "Octopus", but somehow it didn't sound very special to me as I listened it thorugh. But I was young then, I should listen it again.
Greenslade - Their 1st album goes for the five stars! Others sound more or less little boring to me.
Hawkwind - Some are classic albums, some are terrible ****.
Jade Warrior -  "Released" is my favourite of them. I have their 70's material only.
Jethro Tull - "Agualung" is my favourite, and all from 60's.
King Crimson - 72-74  80's albums are also great.
Pink Floyd - Material done with Syd + early non-studio materials before "Meddle". "Animals" is also good album.
Tangerine Dream - "Rubycon" is my favourite, I have tried the others, but they didn't feel as good as it...
Van der Graaf Generator - I like their 70's albums, "Godbluff" being my favourite-
Yes - Anything up to 1976

Revised and complete list of our collection; new additions in red. The first list was off the top of my head. I also listed solo projects of artists that played in certain bands seperately this time. Aera? Area probably?

Grobschnitt, Bo Hansson, Kraftwerk: I admire them to some extent

Patrick Moraz: don't like his solo stuff very much

Ozric Tentacles, Tangerine Dream: can't get into them yet

Queen: I like them a bit, not much

The Residents: they made some pretty good stuff; don't like everything

Vangelis: I like some albums a lot, some leave me indifferent

GTR: a few good tunes, for the rest very commercial stuff

Olias of Sunhillow, Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman, Howe,  Aphrodite's Child, Peter Blegvad, Brand X, Camel, Caravan, Curved Air, Earthworks, ELP, Focus, Robert Fripp, Peter Gabriel, Genesis, Gentle Giant, Gong, Gryphon, Steve Hackett, Peter Hammill, Hatfield and the North, Hoelderlin, Jethro Tull, Eddie Jobson, King Crimson, National Health, Nektar, Pink Floyd, Mike Oldfield, Return to Forever, Soft Machine, Traffic, UK, Van der Graaf Generator, Wakeman, Rick (only a few albums, indeed), Robert Wyatt, Yes:

for a lot of what they did

And for the rest: I still have a lot of music to discover

Certainly. Just tell me what you like, and I will gladly give you some advice.

Fantastic.  I like very technical and jammy music, but not too meandering, and groovy or funky.  I'm a fan of solos and very tight melody, and excellent drumming (I'm a drummer).  I hope I'm not being too vague here.

I'm a drummer too. Let's shake hands! Gilgamesh or In Cahoots could be bands for you; also Soft Head and Soft Heap. That is if you like your drumming jazzy. If you like it more rocky, some early Guru Guru, like "Hinten" or "Känguru" would be excellent for you.

By the way, who is your preferred drummer?

My preferred drummer in prog is probably Pierre Moerlen.  I also love Vinnie Colaiuta.

Yes, certainly he is. Unfortunately Can is pretty unique; but if you like Jaki you should try the Phantom Band, in which he was drummer for a while.

While recommendations are being given away kindly, can I have a band that writes songs in epic style and uses a lot of flute? Name bands that are not known by every person here, yet are not so obscure, that I will never find them. :)

Mother Gong, "Fairy Tales", uses a lot of flute, and it has recently been issued on CD by Spalax (was previously available on vinyl only). The flute is played by Didier Malherbe, by the way.

A splendid collection - John Greaves should definitely be in the archives, what do you think about including Peter Blegvad? Most of his solo work is borderline IMO - much as I love his albums, and in particular his gift as a lyricist, the songs are not particularly adventurous musically. On the other hand, we've got Kevin Ayers and Syd Barrett in the archive and Blegvad's work sits nicely alongside theirs. What do you think?

I agree with you he is borderline; he is close to folk even on some albums. His collaboration with John Greaves though is definitely prog (a wonderfully dadaistic album), as is his work with Slap Happy. (Which just reminds me; I think I forgot to add Slap Happy to my list).

Just added the Third Ear Band to our collection, which I had forgotten for some reason. I hope this is all I forgot; with a collection as big as ours one can never be sure.
I deliberately left out Uriah Heep though (of which we only have the albums up to "The Magician's Birthday"). If bands like Led Zeppelin or Deep Purple are not considered to be prog, Uriah Heep should not be included in the archives either. At least that's my opinion about them.

Well, my brother started it in the late 60s. He is 10 years older than I am, but he only listens to classical and jazz now, so he gave all his other albums to me. Jean inherited a few albums from her parents, who were hippies in the late 60s. And then we collected ourselves, of course.

We don't collect for collecting's sake, we collect the music we like. And metal is not really among it. We know some of the gems, but no thanks. There are very few bands of the metal genré we like. And there are other things that have a higher priority on our list for possible next acquisitions. We may eventually get to the few metal bands we like, but first things first.

quite simple: we never even heard the name "Mike Patton" before we entered this forum some 2 or 3 months ago. we collect on our own, we are not in connection with any other collectors, and we never referred to any websites before to look for interesting new prospects. about half of our collection is inherited from Friede's brother and my parents (there were some overlappings, which we weeded out). we acquire new artists mostly by this principle: A played on a record of artist B, and artist A also has a few solo album out, or he played with artist B. then we either get a solo album or a record of artist B. thus our collection is mostly like a kind of family tree. sometimes we venture into an unknown artist when we like an album cover or the line-up of instruments on it, and some of our best acquisitions were made that way. we don't study any magazines for new acquisitions, and this is the only message board about rock music we attend. this may not be the way others collect, but it is our way

I understand why you would do that - I guess that there are two different approaches:

  1. Focus on music/musicians you already know and try to get ALL their albums, and then try to explore musical "neighbors".
  2. Try to listen to all kinds of music - the more different from what you know, the better.

Both approaches have their advantages ... I try to do both. Today the second approach is much easier than like 10 years ago - if you have a broadband internet connection, you can test-drive virtually every artist right from your living room ... the artists offer free samples, progarchives offers samples, http://www.last.fm - www.last.fm offer their free radio streams ...

we welcome recommendations though. and as I said, we sometimes venture into unknown territory because we like an album cover or the line-up on it.but we refuse to study all kinds of magazines just to get new reommendations. we have a long wishlist, and it is steadily growing, although we keep buying and buying. we will always be behind

That's why I don't try to "complete" my collection - such an attempt will ultimately fail. I try to complete my collection for a handful of artists, but I have no intentions to become a completionist - why buy all CAN albums just because I like Future Days, when I still don't have any Sleepytime Gorilla Museum or Godspeed You Black Emperor?

it is a different approach. we try to combine both, but if we really like an artist we surely want the output completely. but we draw a line somewhere. we don't need to have every obscure single or bootleg (we don't have any bootlegs), we are content with the albums. if the singles of an artist are published on a sampler we may buy it, provided there are not too many tracks on the sampler we already have; else we lack a little bit of the artist. it is not our fault, in my opinion, it is the artist's fault. why the heck did he/she/they publish a single?

Good question ... I don't buy any singles. I also don't like live albums, unless they contains some particularly spectacular moments. I try to limit myself to studio albums and live DVDs ...

that's where we definitely differ. we love live albums. with the really good bands they are so miuch better than the studio albums. buying a life album of Gensis is nonsense though, in my opinion, with the exception of the first, and that only because of some moments in "The Return of the Giant Hogweed" (the way Hackett shows the anger of the plants) and the superb version of "The Knife" with a much better guitar solo than in the studio version

It really depends on the artist. I love Frank Zappa live albums - I have all YCDTOSAs, Live in new York, Jazz Noise, Roxy, Broadway, Best Band ... like I said: If the live album contains some really special moments, then I have to have it. But given the joice, I'd prefer live DVDs ... especially for artists which I never had (and never will have) the pleasure to see live, like Zappa, Spock's Beard, Pink Floyd.
