I was just listening to some Galahad discs in my car earlier and was wondering why they were lesser known than bands like Marillion, Pendragon et al. What artists, group or solo, do feel should be better known?

Oh, gee.
Imediatly the name http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xpqbbmJ42yU" rel="nofollow - Secos & Molhados and http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=2366" rel="nofollow - Marco Antonio Araujo came in my mind, the first are being evaluated by the folk team I guess to be added in PA - although i believe they are crossover.
But there's also a band I like a lot, http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=2585" rel="nofollow - Fuchsia .
Osanna would be the one band that everyone knows but has few reviews of their albums.
I will eventually remeber another names to put here.

Helmut Koellen as a solo artist- should be accepted as Prog Related, or Crossover Prog.

Steve. There is a reason why Galahad are not as well known, or successful, as Marillion, Pendragon, IQ.
It is because they were good, but not as good.

I can think of a few: Von Hertzog Bros and Tesseract, and perhaps, Touchstone, whose young female singer has unfortunately has become quite ill.

The Tea Club- Pretty much the best symphonic/crossover prog band on the east coast right now. Why these guys aren't as big as The Dear Hunter completely baffles the hell out of me!
Lovely Little Girls- The evil stepchild of Magma, Cheer-Accident and Sleepytime Gorilla Museum. Alex Perkerloup is absolutely amazing. I fight for this band to be heard. These guys make music that is insanely catchy but surprisingly more dangerous and weirder than even a lot of avant-stylized bands. BUT, there's something very modern about their sound that I think SHOULD appeal to the youth of today. Kids needs to realize that Lady Gaga and St Vincent aren't actually weird at all...
Orakle- French indie rock meets French avant-black metal. Been listening to their new one for a couple months solid. These guys are like evil satanic Muse now or something. They should be opening up for Muse on tours.
Prypisme- Basically the most outrageous instrumental band based in video game music and avant metal I can think of. Why aren't all the freaking crazy ADHD kids listening to this? Oh... it's because the mass media wouldn't know how to promote them.
Leprous because even though they are doing well in the prog world... these guys should be the biggest metal band on the radio.
Cardiacs because they are the greatest band to ever have existed in my opinion, and they should be a household name damn it! Best psychedelic pop rock a person could ever ask for!
And then pretty much a thousand awesome insane bands that have no chance of fame so i wouldn't even list them.

I think all Prog bands should be better know.
If I was only allowed to name one band, I would name the wonderful Sensations Fix and their mastermind Franco Falsini (solo album "Cold Nose" - this masterpiece is - as far as I know - still available on vinyl). They have been one of my most listened-to bands in the last few years and they still keep me listening and dreaming with their totally intriguing space prog.

Par Lindh Project (the older version of the band with Magda) is my standard answer. Gothic Impressions,Veni Vidi Vici and Mundus Incompertus are all superb . Sadly Magda is no longer with us and Par Lindh did try to reinvent the band recently but Time Mirror turned out to be a bit mediocre. However those albums I mentioned before that were made in the 90's and 00's are well worth checking out.

There are hundreds, even thousands, of prog bands that should be better known. This thread reminds me that I should get back to writing reviews, something I've been putting off for way too long. I can't think of any better way to make them become better known than promoting them through some kind words in a review.

Not to mention that his articles on "Eurock" about music are so far out there that it is more of a philosophy, than anything else. They are way too difficult to figure out, but apparently there is a "vision" and a "concept" over there that is way too weird for a place like PA. None of his words will ever fit into the ideas that PA professes and insists on.

prog folk is just full of bands like this, but I guess prog folk suffers from the same problems with respect to other forms of prog that folk music does in relation to other forms of popular music. I try to review as many of these artists as I can just so they can have ONE review so people can know something of them....
here are a couple of my favorites, both from Italy
one from Wales that had a flurry of early support but needs more!
or this instrumental group from Finland
or this Scottish folkie, with a true lost classic
finally a Scottish/German collaboration, now in crossover. I don't get how these guys aren't as big as the biggest neo bands. I can't even find much in the way of youtubes on them but here is a video review. The booming voice is that of Phil Griffiths, son of Martin Griffiths of Beggars Opera

Ramses actually is in more than one band. His current main gig, Luz de Riada, should have appeared at last year's ProgDay, but there were problems with the visas (unfortunately all too frequent for bands that want to perform in the US), and they had to pull out. well, Irish...there's a difference!
It's hard for me to post about Clannad here because
1) they are not on PA
2) they should be based on a series of albums in the mid 80s - geez any group that became proggy in the 80s should get some credit! So it bothers me when I see some of the bands in prog folk while Clannad sits on the sidelines largely because of their new agey reputation, which was somewhat deserved after they starting emulating Enya (initially they influenced her)
3) they are actually very well known, although I suppose they should be better known in prog circles
so here is a favorite, showing their broad influences
and here is a more rocking number that has influenced quite a few acts including IONA. Note: on the fadeout I always crank it - why did they fade it out!

They are in Eclectic, which in my view suits their music. While they often have a folky vibe going on, they also have edgier, almost Avant elements to their sound.
Edit: Ninja'd by Ken himself! Anyway, regarding Clannad (which I like quite a bit), I am in agreement with you, Ken. When we saw Iona at NEARfest in 2010, I could not help noticing the similarities between them and Clannad - which other prog sites (such as DPRP) have often covered, new-age or not. I would be in favour of adding them, but then I am not a member of your team.

Big fan of Cabezas here too...no scratch that I'm huge fan! I have all their albums plus one live album, all are incredible except for Hermanded, their last one which didn't include their wind instrument player, seems like the reason why it wasn't successful.

My favourite is the last track "Carousel" however "Fridge Full of Star" may be more immediate. It took me a while to get into this album before it hooked me completely, so you need to give it a few listens Micky.
patience I have in spades.. if it is interesting Thanks Alan, I'll check it out this evening.

yeah... for some reason I don't dig the vocal harmonies...
not bad actually Alan! I do like a more chaos and action, less emphasis on singing and lyrics and more on MUSIC... which Raff knows all too well.
Still.. kept my attention for 11+ minutes. Pretty good.

Fridge Full of Stars 1'40 solo ac guitar brought by a sumptuous beginning: this solo's a pure treat (even more than later same chord sequence with the power guitar line) !
...Small venues can feel great, but wouldn't much more people be happy to celebrate...
PS: don't google Alex Perkerloup anymore. It's possible cantaloupe eater Alex Perkolup (from https://lovelylittlegirls.bandcamp.com/" rel="nofollow - that band )

I'm flattered.. but it takes more than that. I had to pass on Stella Vander when she was begging me with her eyes to wisk her away when we met. Now that was flattery...
I am taken you know. Raff has shown me the knife she said she'd cut my heart out with. Don't f**k with Italian women

I think Genesis is underrated on this site. Them, or perhaps King Crimson. Sadly undervalued here.
I was just playing 'Nursery Cryme' the other day. 'The Musical Box' still gives me chills when I hear the opening "play me old King Cole..." and anticipate the glorious finale of this song.
Not so outrageous to mention Crimson and Genesis in the same breath, as Fripp and Gabriel overlapped back in the late 70s. Robert Fripp's 'Exposure' supplied us with the demo to Gabriel's 'Here Comes the Flood', while Fripp in turn produced the second Gabriel solo ('Scratch'), which Gabriel hates, but that's his loss. And fear is the mother of violence, after all.
Genesis became a Phil Collins top-40 act and as far as I am concerned it should be given wide berth as far as prog-iness goes. I mean "follow me if I follow you would you follow me if I follow you if I follow me through days and nights". You follow me?

I'll have to admit that my level of sarcasm was quite high in my previous post.
Now, the band Yes, there is a group that is criminally underrated on PA. It is sad to hear people disparaging Close to the Edge as "progressive disco" just because the band wore capes and high heeled boots.

But seriously. I wish you guys made more reviews of some brazilian bands/artists.
http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=6973" rel="nofollow - Ave Sangria , http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=6971" rel="nofollow - Quinteto Armorial and http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=2366%20" rel="nofollow - Marco Antonio Araujo are names that came in my mind always... and I'am just waiting for http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xpqbbmJ42yU" rel="nofollow - Secos & Molhados finally get accepted here to annoy you with them
The second round of artists would be the Yugoslavian... I even open a apreciation thread, there are good examples there.
Anyone accept the challenge?
