Has to be someone who does NOT come around any more.

There are quite a few old friends who moved on, but I remember an RPI fan and friend named Ryan....Jimmy Row.  I also miss Bob's presence.

Which old timers do you most miss?  Go all the way back to the early days if you wish!

Bob also.
Further on: Snow Dog, Ivan, Trouserpress, the Baldies, Tony R., Erik Neuteboom, Karney (albeit barred)
All colourful people.

I could name off a bunch...  old friends from the genre team days.. forumites like TLC that gave this forum real character and never ending sources of forum drama. David did hit the nail on the head last week in that other thread.. there is a lack of personality in the forums these days. We did have that in spades.

however if I had to name one... it would be Antoine who we tragically lost all too soon.  For me, the forum never was quite the same without him. Broken Heart

Assaf would have been my next choice. A nicer man you will never meet.. and he always know just what ablums to suggest to you, based on what you like, not what he thought you should like (ie what he liked)

It would be great to see him come back some day but I think real life got him. I'm not even sure if he is still in the states or not. Haven't heard from him in years.

Antoine , most definitely. He would have been 58, a few days ago and i still communicate with Violeta, his widow. I met them in Montreal, they were awesome people. He remains immortalized under the moniker FEBUS . I urge all to visit his posts some time soon .  Broken Heart

Jody (TheProgtologist)    tough guy and all-around awesome, and one of the finest metal experts here
Lee (Man Erg)  maybe the single most knowledgeable collab ever, and one hell of a person
James (VanderGraafKommandöh)   just a blast to be around, infectious humor and enthusiasm

and of course Tony R and Bob (Easy Livin')

for old times sake Tony.. come back... just think of what you and I could do. Henry Plainview. Exactly what happened with him? One thing's for certain, he's probably quite grateful for Miley Cyrus remaking herself in the image of Wendy O. Williams for the top 40.

I miss the atmosphere rather than any specific people. Though things in the "good old days" were often fraught with controversy and strife, there was also a genuine sense of caring for each other that has gone almost completely missing. Case in point? The birthday threads. Nowadays hardly anyone wishes other members happy birthday, even if we've been around here for years. A forum is a community of people, after all, and this sense of community is something that - when things go the way they should - goes well beyond the fake friendship of Facebook and other social media. Now all I can perceive is indifference, and this makes me a bit sad.

yeah.. funny. You mentioned that yesterday and was very true.

man did we fight, have our conflicts, but we had each others back when the forum gen. pop came after us, real life took a swing at us, or simple real life occasions.  We were a bit of a family... like any family we had our conflicts... sometimes bitter and nasty.. but we all knew we had a purpose and common goal and worked together to reach it.  I do miss that closeness we had across the teams. No coincidence we got one marriage out of it, and countless life long friendships, both real-life and virtual out of the experience of the tight knit and close genre team families.

I'm bummed by Dean's diminished presence of late also.  For several years prior his posts were some of the most interesting and informative across many subjects.  (Having someone explain in great detail why Star Trek technologies like warp travel will never happen for us was as entertaining as it was depressingLOL)  Thankfully he still checks his PMs so we can harass him there when we want to.  Smile

Yeah I think the exodus to social media has taken its toll in this regard.  Before FB people really engaged more here....now it's more or less a drive by.  I also think with so many ways for people to check out music online before buying, there is less enthusiasm for reviews and/or discussion of music.  Probably a combination of factors that took away the kid-in-a-candy store atmosphere that once existed.

LinusW was always real gent and had a talent for avoiding stupid arguments. I dunno if Iain/ExitTheLemming is still about but he really was a reviewer for the ages and man of strong and substantial opinions without degenerating into bickering like I do. There are a whole lot of people I hope are well and loved - Lappy, James, Henry Plainview, Pat, Kotro, the Shed crowd.

That said I've been back about for like 20 seconds so I'm sure some of them will crop up.

I definitely miss Ian Snow Dog, Tony R, and Bob (Easy Livin), albeit for different reasons.

The forum has clearly changed quite a bit in recent years, although I, for one, do not miss the huge rows. I started one off when I suggested a change to the genre teams and definitions, and I still wish I hadn't. The fallout was so harsh, I gave up as a collab in a team I rather enjoyed being a part of.

It was my fault for being too outspoken on an issue which generates a lot of feeling, and I have enough stress in outside life without adding to it here.

Thus, long may the more pleasant aspects of PA reign, at least to this boring, middle aged, fuddy-duddy! Not, of course, that I don't enjoy a good debate. We should have more of those.

I miss Chris (Syzygy), Martin (Trotsky), Zak (Meurglys)

And I'm really unhappy that we had to wait until halfway of the seond page to remember Bob (Easly Livin)

To a lesser extent, I miss Tony (actually his first incarnation almost more than his admin one)

Some I miss because all too rare are Martin (Alucard), Rollie (Chicapah), Ivàn (for our "esoteric" conversations) and a few more like Oliverstoned... and yes, even Philippe

Yes, I soooooo miss the permanent war zone, where the living was dangerous andthe expected lifetime in combat was estimated at a few weeks. Akvavit, like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vodka" rel="nofollow - vodka , is distilled from either https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cereal" rel="nofollow - grain or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potato" rel="nofollow - potatoes . https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akvavit#cite_note-brit-5" rel="nofollow - [5] After distillation, it is flavoured with herbs, spices, or fruit oil. Commonly seen flavours are https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caraway" rel="nofollow - caraway , https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cardamom" rel="nofollow - cardamom , https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cumin" rel="nofollow - cumin , https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anise" rel="nofollow - anise , https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fennel" rel="nofollow - fennel , and lemon or orange peel. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akvavit#cite_note-brit-5" rel="nofollow - [5] Dill and “ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aframomum_melegueta" rel="nofollow - grains of paradise ” are also used. The Danish distillery https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aalborg#Traditional_industries" rel="nofollow - Aalborg makes an akvavit distilled with https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amber" rel="nofollow - amber .

The recipes and flavours differ between brands, but https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caraway" rel="nofollow - caraway is typically the dominant flavour. Akvavit usually has a yellowish hue, but this can vary from clear to light brown, depending on how long it has been aged in oak casks (Norway) or the amount of colorant used. Normally, a darker colour suggests a higher age or the use of young casks, though artificial https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caramel_colouring" rel="nofollow - caramel colouring is permitted. Clear akvavit is called taffel; it is typically aged in old casks that do not colour the finished https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Distilled_beverage" rel="nofollow - spirit or not aged at all.

Peculiar to the Norwegian tradition are Linje Aquavits (such as "Løiten Linje" and "Lysholm Linje"). Linje Aquavit is named after the tradition of sending oak barrels of aquavit with ships from Norway to Australia and back again, thereby passing the equator ("linje") twice before being bottled. The constant movement, high humidity and fluctuating temperature cause the spirit to extract more flavour and contributes to accelerated maturation.

Norwegian aquavit distillers Arcus has carried out a test where they tried to emulate the rocking of the casks aboard the "Linje" ships while the oak barrels were subjected to the weather elements as they would aboard a ship. The finished product was, according to Arcus, far from the taste that a proper linje aquavit should have.[ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed" rel="nofollow -

Cloudberries, yes!
My oldest brother used to go to Lapponia, and more than once he brought cloudberries with them.
Long time ago since I had any of them.

*chuckles* I suspect the dampness and the drooling comes from rather different sources.

While I do enjoy the odd aquavit, it's rather readily available where I'm at being Norwegian, and I'm personally more prone to the classic coffee and cognac combination. Both of which I have in the quantities I need  at home.

I'll say that though - aquavit is something that needs to be tested, and while Swedes, Danes and Germans may state otherwise my opinion is that the Norwegian Line aquavit is the tastiest of them all.
When I'm hitting the US I'll bring aquavit or Vikingfjord vodka, depending on who I'm staying with. Both of them have a tendency to disappear rather fast.

We have something far more potent than that in Scandinavia.

They're potent alright!
Looking very tasty.
A good Belgian beer is also a treat.
I tried out many sorts since I live in Belgium.

Aha, cloudberries is what we call multe or molte here. A tad too sour for my taste , but if you carefully blend in cloudberries with whipped cream you get a tasty, easy to make traditional dessert that is rather popular here.

Smile

Hahahaha Finnforest, harass him hahaha I will try not to do that via pm, coz he said I am sweet but in a kind of new stalker kind of way hahahaha (not sure if that was a compliment, maybe not hahaha) LOL I laughed so much! He is funny lol I bet he farts wildeberries too Big smile

He used to battle with MikeEnRegalia a lot - I think I agree with you, we could use that sort of spice a bit more now.  In retrospect Teaflax was OK, even though he recommended to the heavens that dreadful band Pure Reason Revolution.

In some ways, he (TF) reminded me of Plainview (his views were never plain/simple, though). Don't miss him at all, though.

Henry Plainview always cracked me up.

And how about the guy (name escapes me) who insisted only music pre-88 was worthy.

All deserve a mention, for different reasons than I think the OP intended.

I miss Pablo (The Quiet One), Jeff (J-Man) and Henk (Progrules) back from the early days of The Flower King's appreciation thread.  While I don't listen to The Flower Kings very often these days, there was a good camaraderie when the thread started up.  I think Jeff is still around but I rarely see him and at least hooked up with him on fb.

yeah.. that reminds me.  Of all the things to miss the most in PA's.  Ivan.. oh yeah. he is still here in spirit but in a kind of symphonic semi-Yoda state.  One can not think of him without thinking of seas of blue font.. verbally going to toe with anyone foolish or stubborn enough to think they can out debate him.

 I miss those days.

I think he left in a huff when he couldn't convince everyone that DT were the greatest band of all and that vanilla Prog Metal the best genre here. A lot of his posts before he left did come across as rather bitter that not everyone shared his enthusiasm for that style.
