What do you think about swedish prog like; Anglagard, Beardfish, Anekdoten, Karmakanic, The Flower Kings, etc...
And what is your favorite swedish prog band, I will have to go with Beardfish.. their music I think is so fresh, I usually love their lyrics, and all the instruments (including voice) have a really peculiar style..

I'am more of the ancient guys.

Bjorn J:son Lindh really moves me (I love his flute playing, and the second album is so experimental). The other would be Samla Mammas Manna - remeber, joy is contagious! (best album liner note ever).

About the new guys, I've only listen to Anglagard and sadly I never managed to finish a album. Their sound is too dense (not in a good way) for me. But its a matter of taste, I'am not criticizing their quality.

I need to listen to Bjorn J:son Lindhn, thanks for the recommendation..

Beardfish is more the style of Samla Mammas Manna, you know the sarcastic, funny style.. not so dense,
If you listen to them please let me know your opinion, I recommend any of the Sleep In Trafic albums.. Pt2 I think is better though

perhaps a bit surprisingly to most of you, outside Ragnarok, Kriget and Samla and if you include certain flok-prog bands like Algarnas or Kebnekaise , I'm not really that much of a 70's Swede prog buff... I tend to think Finland (and Denmark to a lesser extent) was way better during that decade. Even stuff like Myrrbein and Kultivator (both early 80's) don't do much for me

Sweden made a big difference during the 90's with their retro-prog wave (AnglaDotenBerk, Sinkadus, PLP kind of stuff), though I'm not at all into the neo-prog side of that wave (Twin Age, Valinor, etc..) and dislike the Kaipa/TFK stuff.

But out of Scandinavia, nowadays, Norway is miles ahead of the rest of the region

Samla Mammas Manna is top band for me. Kind of ageless albums, funny music but highly talented musicians.
Änglagård, Karmakanic, November, Gösta Berlings Saga, Kebnekajse, 3rd World Electric & Flower Kings. Not forgetting Ramlösa Kvällar and Lars Hollmer Smile

Hearing again Samla... its so funny - I remember playing with this silly voices when child... and they managed to made music out of it.

Its just... so unique.Smile

As shocking as this is for me to say, I'd have to go with Beardfish myself.  For the longest time, The Flower Kings were pretty much at the top of my list of favorite bands, but lately Beardfish moves me so much more.  Comfort Zone is my early choice for album of the year.  We'll see how it works out.

Welcome to the forums by the way.

I'm such a big fan of Swedish music, but I've got a particular knack for digging artists that are completely obscure....and then I saw this thread! Wow!!! Björn J:Son Lindh, Kebnekaise, Älgarnas Trädgård, Ramlösa Kvällar, Samla Mammas Manna and Ragnarok are all faves of mine, but I never see them mentioned over the forum, maybe except for SMM.
Well let me add some more wonderful Swedish acts (and albums) to the mix:

Archimedes Badkar - ll
Kraldjursanstalten - Voodoo Boogie
Fläsket Brinner - Live Stockholm
Nya Ljudbolaget - s/t
Myrbein - Myrornas Krig
Anna Själv Tredie - Tussilago Fanfara
Dungen - 4
Taste Of Blues - Schizophrenia
Grovjobb - Vättarnas Fest
Kornet - Fritt Fall
Kultivator - Barndomens Stigar
Arbete & Fritid - s/t

LOL Yep, I love those names too!
Just a quick note of caution. This list features a lot of "weird" music, and to, at least, get you in the right direction, I'd say start out with acts like Dungen, Necromonkey, Barrett Elmore and for a whiff of the old school, then a gentle start could be Nya Ljudbolaget (a rare album though, unless you purchase a download).
I wouldn't want you to jump straight into Jola Rota without knowing that a) it is absolutely mindbogglingly absurd music and b) that I tend to go for that kind of thing. It is however a very very strange album - even to me, so I just thought I'd warn you beforehand.

Now that I think about it, you may want to check out Goat while you're at it. Such a unique band. They are all anonymous mask wearing musicians that form this Nordic-Indian-what have you type of commune that reeks of hippie. The music though, whilst mostly psychedelic at heart, goes from funk to folk to some kind of tribal disco to blues and this twirling kind of guitar playing that often goes under the name of Tuareg Blues (or merely Tinariwen). It's a Moroccan thing.
Anyway, it's been a real hit n miss recommending this band. The folks I thought would like it didn't and the few that I couldn't imagine digging this kind music absolutely adored itLOL

I have recently gotten into bands like Anekdoten, Anglagard and The Flower Kings
but the first album by a Swedish band that I bought back in the seventies was
Trettioariga Kriget's self titled debut. I quickly followed up with the next two albums.
After that I was turned onto a couple of JRF bands, Kornet and Energy.

Nahh don't worry - I love Archimedes Badkar!! I've got the debut, ll and Tre. I love how different each album sounds going from the Indo raga almost Krautrocking second album to the Ethnic jazz rock of Tre.

And yes, I am familiar with Berits Halsband as well. I bought a reissued vinyl copy last summer.

How about that time the Swedish Chef collaborated with Dr. Teeth and The Electric Mayhem on their classic prog epic, Tales From Topographic Kitchens and other Cutlery?

I don't think Isildur's Bane was mentioned yet.  Certainly a band that went through a lot of development from symph to chamber prog to some quite unclassifiable stuff, including a collaboration with a group of free improvisers.  I think their 1992 album Voyage: A Trip to Elsewhere is a bit of a masterpiece.

On the topic of Archimedes Badkar, ex-member Per Tjernberg has released some interesting music in recent years.  I'd recommend checking out his album Music is my Salvation, really not prog but lovely, hard-to-categorise music that won't scare your granny but is actually full of substance and detail.

I like those newer Swedish prog groups, but the older ones really move me more, especially Samla Mammas Manna, Ragnarök, Fläsker Brinner, Bo Hansson. And from the more recent groups, my favorite is Klotet, which is much more based on Scandinavian jazz & folk tingled '70s prog rock than Anglagard, Beardfish etc.

But there's so many more great bands from Sweden.
Norway is giving us Proggers some real treats as well.

Has no one mentioned my favorite band from Sweden?  SEVENTH WONDER is currently working on their  soon to be released (at least we hope for 2017) fifth studio album.  Last year the dvd/cd "Welcome to Atlanta 2014; Welcome to Mercy Falls" was released, which included their first day at ProgPowerUSA performing the entire Mercy Falls album plus a second appearance the next day which closed with an amazing acoustic medley sung by all five musicians.  https://youtu.be/TANcV7StP3s" rel="nofollow - https://youtu.be/TANcV7StP3s

For me Par Lindh Project is the best band to come from Sweden. Not a fan of The Flower Kings apart from maybe the last couple.
I like recent Opeth albums and also starting to enjoy Katatonia as well. That's probably about it really.

That'd be a bummer, they were never my favorite but I like all of their albums. One can only hope that Daniel will do some even better stuff going forward! He's on my favorite Flower Kings Song - The Truth Will Set You Free. I also think he's a perfect 5th member for Transatlantic with all of his talents. Would love to see him do some other collaborations.
