Can is my favorite band ever! Any other Can fanboys here who are disgusted with the low ratings on this site?

I love Can as well. Tago Mago and Ege Bamyasi are masterpieces of krautrock. Monster Movie and Future Days are pretty good too. I can't say I'm a fanboy though.

Big fan of CAN, Future Days is probably my favorite followed by Tago Mago and Ege Bamyasi. I don't think their ratings are that low considering they are a 'difficult' band. Their top ratings are in the 3.8 to 4.0 range. That's pretty good, I'm not seeing many haters.

no disrespect at all, I acknowledge their importance and influence across many types of artists who namecheck them, but for some reason I cannot actually listen to Can's music. something about their sound just doesn't click with me.

i'll tell ya, they are a 'difficult' band for many folks - though i find their work soothing and groovy
tago mago gets at least a weekly listen, future days my next fav, then ege bamyasi
but, i get worse reactions from non-adventurous listeners with can than with almost any other act, save perhaps magma
i've turned on folks to lots of odd stuff, but i've never been able to make a convert with can

Yup, they are certainly a difficult band to get into. However, they do have some songs that are pretty catchy and probably easier to get hooked on. I know I loved 'Vitamin C' the first time I heard it.

Its low compared to artists like King Crimson, Genesis, Yes, and Pink Floyd. I just figure a prog site would be more open minded or even praising of unconventional ideas. Really their seems to be a bias towards Krautrock in general.

The problem with that is even prog has a "mainstream" and off-beat music.
There are prog listeners who mainly listen to symphonic/neo stylized music. Or those who mainly listen to extreme metal. Regardless of where their comfort zone is in prog listening there is going to be music that is difficult.
I do agree that as progressive music listeners you'd think that the audience would be interested in unconventionality, but its all perspective. I adapt a similar concept to mainly listening to modern music/prog.

Only if you expect CAN to be the highest rated band on a site devoted to the broad church of prog. 4 stars is an excellent ranking for any offbeat band & I think you're giving prog rock fans to much credit for being broad minded and appreciative of the edges of the genres.
Look at the top rated albums:-
Close To The Edge - only 6% of fans rate it less than 4 stars Thick As A Brick - 9% Selling England - 7% Wish You Were Here - 7% In The Court Of The Crimson King - 6%
Those number are really kind of ridiculous in any statistical sense.
CAN's best rated album only has 20% of people rating it less than 4 stars & that on a site where lots of fans like their prog more mainstream. I think their rankings hold up very well.

WTF with that Streetcar post ?? I know Mooney is repetitive, but that post was a bit much. I love all their albums for one reason or another, even Out Of Reach !! Very difficult to pick a favourite - usually one of the Damo albums, but sometimes Babaluma or even Landed.

I was fortunate enough to have come across a 2 LP set called Can - Rohstoff, Essential Lost Tapes '68-'76. Over 100 minutes of bliss. Also the 'Can Box' has amazing things.

Sunday Jam is a breath of fresh air (Can S/T 1979). I have much love for the Rosko Gee period, regardless of what the masses say.

I am a huge fan - I picked up Cannibalism I when I was in college (around 1991?) and dug it - then around 2000 I dove in the deep end - living near Amoeba Music in Berkeley CA helped - I ended up with all the albums, the recent "The Lost Tapes" set, the Can Box (which included Book & Video), Bussy's book on Can - looks like there may be an official biography soon too! ( http://www.theguardian.com/music/2014/mar/28/krautrock-pioneers-can-to-release-official-biography" rel="nofollow - http://www.theguardian.com/music/2014/mar/28/krautrock-pioneers-can-to-release-official-biography )
I've also been fortunate to see both Malcolm Mooney and the Tenth Planet and Damo Suzuki live, twice each. Damo was very approachable, I corresponded with him a bit via email - unfortunately, he is recovering from cancer right now so hasn't been performing. Got to meet Malcolm Mooney through an Amoeba connection, I had picked up his solo albums while I lived in Japan which I asked him to sign:
And now that I think about it, I had a couple of Can ringtones in Japan too! They were amazing, really cool 8-bit stuff - I played it for one of the Tenth Planet members at Amoeba and he immediately called up Malcolm Mooney on the phone and played it for him!
I would expect Can to be challenging - they came out of the German avant-garde and didn't set out to be a commonplace "rock band." Their "spontaneous composition" style influenced my own music a lot. I think I can safely say they are in my all-time Top Ten of any music.

Definitely many Can albums are worth looking into. I've seen the fairly low majority ratings for albums like `Flow Motion', `Saw Delight' and the self titled 1979 album on here, but those are all very worthwhile albums, full of an amazing variety of ideas. Perhaps I'm a little more forgiving of them because I heard those ones before their classic albums like `Future Days', 'Tago Mago' etc.
But it's easy to understand why there may be a bit of snobbery from more traditional prog fans towards them. I guess to some, Can are too messy, noisy, schizophrenic and `weird'. Meh, their loss!
I actually wonder if the members of Can would hate being associated alongside `prog' bands?

Yep.
Pretyy much anything from Monster Movie to Soon Over Babaluma is essential for Can-heads. Landed has it's moments (mainly Vernal Equinox and Unfinished) but the rest is average at best.
For non studio works, Unlimited Edition, The Lost Tapes, and Box Music is equally as essential as the studio albums IMO. Delay 68 is a fun addition if you are a fan of their early stuff.

Saw Delight is an excellent album, for what it's worth. It has the biggie - Animal Waves, Proto-trance and World elements blending together, Kraut-style. Rosko is a very funky bassist, very different from Holger's monstrous groove. Speaking of which, Holger is on fire throughout Vernal Equinox.

Opinions of the later stuff is all over the map - I don't like Landed or
Soon After Babaluma very much whereas some people love them. I love Saw Delight and Can (the one with the
wrench with "All Gates Open," "Safe," "Sunday Jam," and "EFS No. 99 'Can
Can'" being my favorite songs) - Rosko Gee is definitely a huge part of
it!

Can are great. The track that blew my mind on the BBC thing was Mighty Girl - what a tune. It sounds like )they have did themselves) unfinished, but I would like to add the reference Steve Hackett here. What a piece, could be something from him.
My fav pick is Flow Motion. Sweeping orchestral synths, wah guitar a la Graffiti era Page, a superb reggae groove damned if I know what's not to like here. Bit like Saw Delight and other later efforts that are not as highly regarded... why?? Same with Soon Over Babaluma is this one too much of a challenge for the Ege Bamyasi fans who stop around Future Days?
I've quite a lot of bootlegs (audience derision on one) but interesting content on all.
They're not a pop band (disco hit aside - most amusing occurrence -of all things to happen!) but once you click into these guys (guitar fans do please FFS note how good Michael Karoli IS) then their world opens up. For the record I rate Karoli on roughly the same level as Akkerman, Page, Hackett and Gilmour. Miight throw in equivalences to Latimer as well... The things is that Can are not a guitar oriented band but a sonic one (like Pink Floyd without the song structures) so don't be misled by the references . But when he does... oh boy...
Look, one of their most rated albums Tago Mago is actually not one of my favourites (subjectively speaking), Oh well too bad. never mind (it's quite superb just not one of my first picks - it may be yours, great). But if you want or are into something that is not the norm (whatever that is in prog rock) then Can's where you go. Might take a few listens (this is prog) and it might happen who knows when, but it's the sort of thing that when it does, makes you go OMFG...)
Bit like what happened when I finally got into Magma...

^ Well said, on ALL counts !! Quantum Physics is a piece that sounds like nothing else in the world, galaxy.....universe even. I once sent an e-mail to Holger asking him of this piece - he replied, I printed his response out but buggered if I know where I've stored it. I'll have to go 'digging' amongst my piles of stuff and see if I can find it. It was quite amusing actually.
