cannot understand why Anekdoten as not gotten a thread here on progarchives.com so here I`ve started one so anyone else enjoy the heavy aggressive at times symphonic, moody, melancholy progressive rock band. six great albums filled with two mellotron players and cello.

I'm a big fan. The new album is stunning - as good as anything they've released in the past IMO with perhaps the exception of Nucleus.

I am also really enjoying the new album. Part heavy, part not; all good. The only downside of this one (and their last few) is no more cello!

Their live albums are top notch. The mellotron is pretty much a bellowing lead instrument.
While their vocals can sometimes be tiresome, they're unique and fit the music perfectly.

if memory serves, there was a (small) bit of cello in the previous aToD album... Yeah, I also miss the cello, but I think ASD got some heat for not playing it well (it was fine enough forme, though) in their early albums. So she may be a bit psychologically blocked in that direction. But the new one is definitely in my faves after Nucleus and the debut... I adore the closing lengthy intrumental with theo Travis' sax and flute.

Personally I find Gravity their lesser album, followed bu AtoD then From Within.

All their albums are 4 stars and up, but I prefer their later work: Gravity, A Time of Day and Until All the Ghosts Are Gone, the latter being one of the best albums of 21st century prog.

Nucleus is a prog masterpiece in all respects. I lump the 1st 3 songs (Nucleus/Harvest/Book of Hours) together in what I like to call "The Nucleus Suite"

Oh definitely a notch above - no less than a 5 star album IMO. I'd probably have ATOD and Gravity the opposite way around to you but agree they are the weaker ones though only by comparison to the rest. Most bands would kill to have released 2 such good albums.

Anekdoten is one of those band, I forget and then play again and then forget. Maybe because they take so long te record an album. A bit like Hidria Spacefolk.
The band is kind of dark, and difficult to swallow. Their first albums are King Crimson-Red-alike. Their later albums have an own sound.
Lots of mellotron, heavy stonerrock rhythms and melancholic vocals. Long time my favorite was Gravity, then replaced by A Time of Day and recently by Until All the Ghosts are Gone.
The thing I like the least is the too heavy/noisey/chaotic stonerrock sections. Too loud and almost ugly. I like the flute and mellotron. Very nostalgic.

hmmm interesting view point yes there first album "Vemod" is very King Crimson-Red-alike the others imho are starting to be Anekdoten sound. the other point of alike is two or three cover artwork seem to have like a Black Sabbath Vibe...

You must be a Mellotron-fanatic? Am I right? Moody Blues, Anekdoten, King Crimson :-)
Sometimes I hear very early Barclay James Harvest in the music of Anekdoten.

Bigelf, I should try that out. (Y) Also a very nice 70's band with Mellotron is Cressida. A little different but sounds like Moody Blues here and there....

I scored a picture disc of Until All the Ghosts are Gone from this year's Record Store day. So happy, and such a great album.

I mean, the band is fantastic, but it doesn't jump out from the crown, if you know what I mean. Until The Ghosts are Gone changed that a bit, but just because it's easier to listen to than From Within, their undisputed apex IMHO.
Up to that point they only managed to marginally emulate other bands, specially very early King Crimson without having anything specifically theirs, but with From Within they managed to have a distinctive sound which was, by leaps and bounds above everything they've put out up to then and from then. The album is VERY nuanced, uses light and dark VERY well and has that degree of spaciness their other albums lack.
Until the Ghosts are Gone is easily their second best, it has their distinctive sound and the compositions are great and all, but it's "just" a very good prog album. If you have any sort of ground-level understanding or knowledge of it you can enjoy it, while I believe their earlier albums (Nucleus and From Within) are deeper than that.
Still, fantastic band, I genuinely hope they can put another album as good as or better than their 2015 output.

A top three band for me so I consider myself to be maybe the biggest fan on this site. I've rated many of their albums with five stars, they just suit me perfectly. And the new one is their best in my opinion. I think I have all their stuff including the rare EP. I hope before I pass on that I can see them live, it will be one emotional experience if I do.

Missed this before. Hey Tom! Listened to Until All The Ghosts Are Gone back to back tonight. What a range of emotions for me and that "just can't get enough" feeling with this band and yet never over-playing them for fear of ever growing tired of their music.

^ Hi John !! Better late than never I have to say that I haven’t spun any Anekdoten for quite some time. That has got to change. Been obsessing over Metal, Devo, White Willow and Wobbler though !!
