I get totally cheesed by word and phrase trends. The biggie that's currently making the rounds: It is what it is A completely valueless thing to say, in the same light-poetic sphere as "at the end of the day." So annoying.

There's plenty of phrases at work that get on my nerves - "scope creep" "reaching out" preponing (as in the opposite of postponing) and the best one ever which I fortunately only heard once - "we're having a stir fry in the strategy wok".

Getting seriously: I mostly hate words and terms that are coined to describe political ideologies by their opponents, half because they're almost inevitably used as thought-terminating clichés utilized to describe a standpoint as wrong without explaining why in further detail. It doesn't just refer to more obvious cases, though. When was the last time you heard a follower of the Frankfurt School of Marxist sociology self-identify as "Cultural Marxist" or a follower of the Chicago School libertarian economics self-identify as "neo-liberal"? Have you ever witnessed a single discussion that got more productive after one of the participants accused the other of being too "politically correct", let alone a "social justice warrior" or "cryptofascist"? The On Demand part of my cable has this new banner that says...uh... Feel Free to Binge! The first time I read that I wanted to high dive into an empty swimming pool. Not only does it make it sound like they have a veritable smorgasbord of treasures to choose from (when in reality it's a couple dozen movies on the level of Bull Durham and Home Alone), but it's practically bullying me with this suggestion, all because the company wants to sit at the cool table with Netflix.

The unending use of 'grab': as in 'can I grab the bill', 'grab a drink', 'grab my coat'. How degrading a word, using physical force constantly, pfff! Then we have the 'like' spasm . I know many who talk this way" Like, I saw her, like, she is pretty, like, a real hottie, like, really, like, lets go mountain climbling, like" . WTF is this ? This is not english, its Facebook-ese where you have like stuff and click on it !

I guess my problem with it is, I'd say 99/100 times, a good point is not summed up with "it is what it is." There's a defeatism and last second faux-dignity to the phrase that I really can't stand. Another one I hate is bat sh*t crazy.

Here are some words I just don't care for: pretentious (as was already mentioned), grandiloquent, pompous. I've said it before, I'll say it again: those words don't mean anything in the context of a music discussion. They don't make any sense. Where does all this come from? Even professional music critics use these words. I've never understood this kind of diction. Those words are supposed to describe a human quality, not a musical one.

Edit: one more, and this one is rather a case of misuse: trifecta. Look, people, it's not a synonym for a general "three-piece" or "three-fold". I see this kind of thing in TV shows and hear it on comedy albums. Mine too. I've reclaimed the word, I think it's nice. Pratchett and Gaiman used it nicely in Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch. I don't see that any other word would have served as well there, it set the tone of the novel perfectly. My nan always used it sarcastically "That's nice dear..." when it was evidently clear to her that it was anything but nice, and I quite like that. I want a nice cup of tea. No other word fits in that phrase to convey the exact meaning it requires - I don't want a pleasurable cup of tea, nor do I want an agreeable cup of tea or a delightful cup of tea - I want a nice cup of tea ... preferably with a nice biscuit or two   ------------- What? |

I do find a lot of political terminology that has a concrete well-defined and useful meaning is often abused as thought-terminating clichés to either get people to shut up, or basically dismiss an argument as wrong without explaining why, which ends up making them radioactive. It's the kind of thing certain bloggers call "ideological applause lights". I learned this when I read "Good Omens" for the first time.  All my life I've heard and said all of a sudden, but the language is mutating for whatever sad reasons, and I hear more and more people say "all the sudden". Makes me cringe every time. |

I hate the word "Clone" when applied to music. When someone says "Starcastle is a clone of Yes", or "Triumvirat is a clone of ELP", all that tells me, is that the person A) Doesn't really know much at all about either group in question, and B) is just being lazy and generalising |

No-one has mentioned this one - now, I think everyone from Peter Hammill to Rob Thomas has used the word 'baby' in song lyrics. I HATE this use - so they are singing to/about a new-born offspring ?? So your missus is 44 years old, you say " how's about it, baby ? " - how degrading......... .......'babe' is almost as bad. |

Your English Teacher is very wise Chopper, even I when I use that word I add very nice :) i.e. very nice person or very nice to me, this changes the perspective. On the other-hand when one says it's nice or a nice song, that means ok not special and certainly not good either
