I have recently been monitoring the reviews of one band (unnamed since it is of no concern to the topic) and have noticed that most of their albums have recently had a 1 star rating allocated to them in the stats though there is no written review. In almost every case, this 1 star review is almost TOTALLY out of line with all other reviews. Judging by the sharp fall of some other bands' albums as well in the charts, it may be happening to others. I believe (I'm almost certain in fact!) that this is the work of someone trying to manipulate the charts to the benefit of their own favourite band/bands (not sure which yet) by giving poor reviews to other bands. These sad people need to get a life!
Could I suggest that ratings without reviews should be deleted and not considered for chart positions/ average ratings? Everyone has a right to an opinion but should be prepared to air those views so that the rest of us can challenge them. Anyone else noticed this practice??

You mightwant to give us the band's name so one of the collabs can check your observations!!!!
Rating without reviewing is under the scope of collabs. Already , since this morning , the rating space came under the reviewing space. A step forward but maybe still not enough! Time will tell!!
I was always one to say that this top list brought more harm than good. However , I also realize that younger progheads and newbies might find it useful. But it only sheds more lights on the obvious artists and keeps the obscure ones into......obscurity. Only a few obscurities manage to pierce this list (in the lower ranks) so they became less obscure.

If the ratings without reviews aren't deleted, one step in the right direction would be to list the ratings. There's no reason why they aren't shown at all, you could at least display the star rating, date & time and the username. It's extremely irritating to find an album with an average rating of below three, and there are only 4 star REVIEWS.

I maybe meant "guilt", but I just can't delete such a funny sentence.

I agree completely, ratings without reviews should be barred.

Totally agree. If you want to sl*g an album at least
have the cojones to explain why - don't just give it
one star and b*gger off.

I have already brought this issue up in another thread and have been informed that its under review. The reason it is as it is apparently is so that non English speakers can give a rating!

I'd throw my weight behind the "No review, No Rating" concept to be
sure. Too many people just post a 1, or 5 star rating without reviewing. What
help is that?
That being said, did collabs really just get the ability to rate
without reviewing? I have about 200-300 albums I'd love to rate, but
did not want to do it until I can properly review them at the same
time. I'd enjoy going on a rating-spree, then add reviews later as I
had more itme

^ Cluster One:
There's a thread about that question in the collabs area.
BTW: I did some calculation about the effect of the anonymous ratings on the avg rating in the Prog Music Lounge.

I was to post something about this, but I saw this topic, so I,ll post it here.
The perfect example for this problem is www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_CD.asp?cd_id=3160 - 'Si on avait besoin d'une 5ième saison' by http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_BAND.asp?band_id=619 - Harmonium . This album has right now an average of 4.50 stars, bu it had like 4.92 not so long ago. Every reviews it got are giving it 5 stars except one, so it clearly seem to be a masterpiece. Some reviews are from some very respectable prog reviewers, Mr. Chantraine even says it's in his Top10, and he has done over 1300 reviews here. But then if you look at the votes:
HARMONIUM Si on avait besoin d'une 5ième Saison ratings (22 entries)
Essential: a masterpiece of progressive music (82%) |
|
Excellent addition to any prog music collection (5%) |
|
Good, but non-essential (0%) |
|
Collectors/fans only (9%) |
|
Poor. Only for completionists (5%) |
| | There's 3 recent vote giving this album 1 or 2 stars, and the guys (or the guy) who did that didn't said a word. I suspect a bit the fact that since this album entered in the top100, some people might wanted to low his overall rating to get it down of the top, but that's a suposition. No matter what, I do not accept one of the great album to came out from Québec to receive that kind of stupid treatment.

I agree with you 100% Borealis. It's one of my favorite albums too.
However, I'm fine if someone decides to give it 2 or even 1 stars, if he explains why. But that's just ridiculous, it sure seems like someone was just trying to drop their overall rating.

The band I noticed it happen to was Camel.
Moonmadness, Mirage and A Live Record have all dropped a long way due to (at least, possibly more) one 1* rating with no review.
Dream Theater also get some similar treatment.

Yes, but they recieve so many more non-worth 5 stars ratings... It's even more unfair, they get a lot better average than what they are worth...

I take it you don't like DT. Well, nor do I very much. But at least I can see what they're trying to do and they do not deserve some of the unthinking flak directed at them by those who take pleasure in hating them (or the sycophantic praise from the fanboys either!).
And I don't object so much to bad ratings of my favourite albums when the person takes the trouble to explain WHY they don't like the album. I still want to kill them, just a lot less painfully.

Same for me... I saw 1 star rating to Tago Mago and Zeit, and their reviews didn't seem enough for me, I'd like em to write 800+ words at least so I could accept them...

It's just happened to The Snow Goose as well today.
Can one of the collabs please see if the same person is doing it?

Unfortunately, I cannot run an enquiry to show me ratings without reviews for an individual album. mailto:M@X - M@X has now said he will stop ratings without reviews though, so the issue is being addressed.

Good. Thanks.
I seriously think that ONLY reviews should count for ratings and that this could be made retrospective (ie all ratings without reviews should be deleted and disregarded).
For example, Hugues Chantraine gives a 2* review to my favourite album - The Snow Goose. I don't agree with him (I rarely do) but I think he's as entitled to his opinion as I am mine and he does at least justify his rating in his review. So that's fine.
But some little s**t gives several albums a crap rating and hides behind his cloak of anonimity; that gets me mad.
And to the person who suspects I somehow have a guilty conscience, every rating I have given has had a review attached, no exception!

Anyone know who "jordisubir" is?
Today he has trashed several albums, including classics like Animals and Mirage, with 1* ratings and no reviews. I have not yet found a single rating above this. Is he a punk or similar, out to trash prog??? If so, delete his ratings!!
